Can't Access Database Because Asp.net Replaces Windows Username
Feb 25, 2006
In visual studio 2005 I created a web page which accessed some information from a database on an sql server.
Various pages highlighted that aspnet replaces the windows username with it's own variant which is likely to blocked when trying to access the server.
I adjusted the web.config to use a connection string with Trust_Connection=True.
This doesn't seem to have worked.
Any Suggestions as to why this would be?.

I need to determine the following about the current authenticated Windows domain user who is trying to access a SQL Server via a trusted connection.
1 Has the current user been granted login access to the trusted SQL Server?
2 Has the current user been granted access to a specific database?
3 Is the current user a member of a specific database role such as (DB_ROLE_ADMINISTRATORS)?
Thanks,
Sean

Hi Guys,
I have an Intranet web application and I have to use windows authentication. They are 4 main users group to access the application, each with different set of permission on my store procedures.
I have created a windows group for each of those group in my windows environemnt. My DB Connection String in web.config is set to Integrated Windows Authentication ( Integrated Security=SSPI)
I have done all configuration based on this article: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms998292.aspx
I have 4 different database Roles in my database and 4 different database users. I also add NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE as a member of each of those database Roles.
Now I get connected, fine and set permission on the database roles.
1 thing I want to know, How Can I get the Windows Group name in the database, which has the same name as my SQL Login and Database Roles or User
I tried all SUSER_SNAME() and ... they all return NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE
I want to get AppPowerUser Role or windows group name. I think I should be able to because I am using windows authentication.
Any help is appreciated.

As the titel suggests I am having quite a strange problem
I have installed an Enotebook on our domain server at work and it uses MSQL express 2005.
When I ask it to automatically connect using window authentication to connect it works on windows XP machines with DomainUSERNAME. However when I try the same thing on Windows vista it tells me the logon failed with "DomainUSERNAM". I change it to SQL Authetifcation and type the same username fully (I have added the user via active directory as a SQL user) then it works
Basically it looks like the windows username is sent from Vista missing the last letter.
I have Googled this a lot and have not really found an answer. Am I mearly being very stupid or is this a known issue. Can anyone give me a suggestion as to why this might happen?.

I have been using the software, and it has been working fine (on windows user A). Now, I have created another windows user (User B), and would like to use the same software/database. The software launches fine (User B), but cannot access the created SQL database (created with user A)
How do I setup the database to allow access from all users on the same PC?

I have a windows app I am deploying by CD along with SQL Server - when I manually installed sql server my app can access the db (named instance, local system, mixed mode). I used the exact same settings to do an unattended install for sql express and it does not work. All the settings in the db look the same. Does anyone know what it could be?
Thanks.

Hi All
I am trying to connect to my report server through URL access and then trying to retrieve some values from my SSRS from my local machine like :
<a href="http://IPAddressOfServer/ReportServer/Reports/?%2fDashboardReports%2fHorse_Profile&rs:Command=Render&HorseID=117415"><%=name%> </a>
But when i click on this hyperlink it asks for the username and password for that server.
However , i am using the following code to connect to my server :
String url = "http://IpAddressOfServer/ReportServer/ReportService2005.asmx";
ReportingService2005Soap port = null;
ReportingService2005Locator loc = new ReportingService2005Locator();
// Retrieve a port from the service locator
try {
port = loc.getReportingService2005Soap(new java.net.URL(url));
} catch (MalformedURLException e) {
// TODO Auto-generated catch block
e.printStackTrace();
} catch (ServiceException e) {
// TODO Auto-generated catch block
e.printStackTrace();
}
org.apache.axis.client.Stub stub = (org.apache.axis.client.Stub) port;
stub.setUsername("IpAddressOfServer\USERNAME");
stub.setPassword("PASSWORD");
It is getting connected withut any problem and i am retrieving values also from my SSRS.
But the problem comes when i want to click on some hyperlink and it should go to the report server and generate the corressponding report.
But it is asking for the username and password which is not required.
If there will be some security issue it must not be get connected with the server through the code i am using.
I have tried to connect with wrong password but it gives unauthorized exception.
SO please anybody has any idea, advise me.
Regards.

Hi guys. I created a database "MyDatabase" using an AD Account "user01" which is a member of a domain group "GroupA". I have created a login in my SQL Server 2005 for this AD group. I have also added the said login as a user of my database. I created other AD users and put them in the same group. When I try to access the database using the other users, I get this message
The server principal "MyDomainuser02" is not able to access the database "MyDatabase" under the current security context.
This KB tells me that my situation is triggered by the first case in which the owner of the database is windows authenticated. I have already set the database to be TRUSTWORTHY. I haven't tried CERTIFICATES though. I believe I haven't done anything complex to warrant this solution.
I'm really lost with the myriads of principals and securables that SQL2005 has. All I want is just to execute a certain set of stored procedures. I can't do this because I can't even execute "USE MyDatabase". What are the permissions I need to give to "GroupA" ?

We log ship our production database tansaction logs to a secondary database on a separate remote domain.
Incidentally, this was not set up via the "Ship Transaction Logs" wizard, but instead we had to use the various system stored procedures after restoring a copy of the database on the remote domain in standby mode.
We now have an issue where users are unable to access the remote secondary database without having sysadmin privileges. Clearly we want to avoid this!
We want to be able to use Windows Authentication mode on the server of the secondary database. But since the two domains differ, is it possible to even achieve this?
How can we set up read-only access for users on the secondary database without giving them sysadmin privileges?

I 'completed' a DTS package which uses a file on a non-SQL server. I am about to put this into production, so it runs automatically each evening. but just realized that it won't work unless it signs onto the source file's Windows 2000 server. It works for me when I'm testing it because I am always logged on the the Windows 2000 server.
I have been trying to figure out which DTS task I need to use to establish a connection by embedding my UserName and Password. Any tips woud be apprecitaed.

I am not so familiar with SQL Server 2005, but the problem is that when i created a vies and try to save it, instead of the name starting with the dbo. prefix, its starting with my username.
And i just found out that this is not happening only in the view its happening where ever i created an object and try to save it.
How can i change this from my username to make it display dbo. instead.
I think this is why i'm getting permission error when i try to use DTS package.

Hi Guys,
My boss is concern that when using Windows authentication, a user can access any database that they have the rights too, using any SQL tool, and make unauthorised changes. He thinks that using SQL authentication is better because the username/password can be hidden from the user. (Access to the database is controlled by our applicatoin.)
Could someone knowledgeable in this are please comment.

I´ve configured the following itens to allow remote connecitions:
WORKAROUND
Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause
serious problems that may require
you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot
guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using
Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own
risk.To work around this problem, follow these steps on the
computer that Windows XP SP2 is installed on:
1. Make sure that the Log On As account for the MSDTC service
is the Network Service account. To do this, follow these steps:
a. Click Start, and then click Run.
b. In the Run dialog box, type Services.msc, and then click OK.
c. In the Services window, locate the Distributed Transaction
Coordinator service under Name in the right pane.
d. Under the Log On As column, see whether the Log On As
account is Network Service or Local System.

If the Log On As account is Local System, continue with these steps.
e. Click Start, and then click Run.
f. In the Run dialog box, type cmd, and then click OK.
g. At the command prompt, type Net stop msdtc to stop the MSDTC service.
h. At the command prompt, type Msdtc €“uninstall to remove MSDTC.
i. At the command prompt, type regedit to open Registry Editor.
j. In Registry Editor, locate, and then delete the following subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftMSDTC
k. Close Registry Editor.
l. At the command prompt, type Msdtc €“install to install MSDTC.
m. At the command prompt, type Net start msdtc to start
the MSDTC service.
Note The Log On As account for the MSDTC service is set
to the Network Service account.
2. To allow the network transaction, you must enable
MSDTC. To do this, follow these steps:
a. Click Start, and then click Run.
b. In the Run dialog box, type dcomcnfg.exe, and then click OK.
c. In the Component Services window, expand Component
Services, expand Computers, and then expand My Computer.
d. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
e. In the My Computer Properties dialog box, click
Security Configuration on the MSDTC tab.
f. In the Security Configuration dialog box, click to
select the Network DTC Access check box.
g. To allow the distributed transaction to run on this
computer from a remote computer, click to select the Allow Inbound check box.
h. To allow the distributed transaction to run on a
remote computer from this computer, click to select the Allow
Outbound check box.
i. Under the Transaction Manager Communication
group, click to select the No Authentication Required option.
j. In the Security Configuration dialog box, click OK.
k. In the My Computer Properties dialog box, click OK.
3. Configure Windows Firewall to include the MSDTC
program and to include port 135 as an exception. To do this,
follow these steps:
a. Click Start, and then click Run.
b. In the Run dialog box, type Firewall.cpl, and then click OK.
c. In Control Panel, double-click Windows Firewall.
d. In the Windows Firewall dialog box, click Add
Program on the Exceptions tab.
e. In the Add a Program dialog box, click Browse,
and then locate the Msdtc.exe file. By default, the
file is stored in the Installation drive:WindowsSystem32 folder.
f. In the Add a Program dialog box, click OK.
g. In the Windows Firewall dialog box, click to select
the msdtc option in the Programs and Services list.
h. Click Add Port on the Exceptions tab.
i. In the Add a Port dialog box, type 135 in the Port
number text box, and then click to select the TCP option.
j. In the Add a Port dialog box, type a name for the
exception in the Name text box, and then click OK.
k. In the Windows Firewall dialog box, select the name
that you used for the exception in step j in the
Programs and Services list, and then click OK.
But, when the Windows firewal on the server is "On", remote connections
are not allowed, despite I´ve configured the Exceptions on the firewall.
Is there another task to solve this problem?
thanx!!!!

Brief Description: I would like to use C# to write a program to access a SQL Server instance which is at another PC and using Windows Authentication. (I know how to use SQL Server Authentication, but I need to use Windows Authentication only.)
Detailed Description:
1. I have two PCs, and I would like to write a C# program in PC1. to access SQL Server at PC2 with Windows Authentication only.
2. I installed Microsoft Dynamics POS system. I install the POS Database with Windows Authentication only at PC2, but then I can install POS at my PC1, and when I set up the connection to the SQL Server, POS will pop up a dialog to ask me the username and password. I can just use the PC2's windows user account to login. Then POS can work fine. I would like to do the same just like what they did.
3. I tried the following code at the PC2 (the same PC as the SQL Server running), and it is running fine. But if I copy the same program and run it at another PC, then it will pop up a "Logon failuer: unknown user name or bad password.".
Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Common.ServerConnection myServerConn = new Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Common.ServerConnection();myServerConn.LoginSecure = true;myServerConn.ConnectAsUser = true;myServerConn.ConnectAsUserName = "username";myServerConn.ConnectAsPassword = "myPassword";myServerConn.ServerInstance = "myPCName\mySQLInstance";myServerConn.Connect();
Please help! Thank you!

After 2 days of reading everything on the net about setting up Remote Access of my SQL 2012 Express using Windows Authentication I'm still not able to connect from a remote client onto my SQL Server Database Engine. I can get connected if using SQL Server Authentication. I have set all the parameters to allow access (read and tried everything from this site: URL.... but when I try using SSMS from the remote client to login I get Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18452).I've disable the firewall (Even though I have put in rules to allow port 1433 and UDP port 1434). Nothing is allowing me to connect. I've have tried every solution listed and got nowhere. My network is very simple with only three computers connected via a Linksys router (Two running Windows 7 the test client is running Windows 8.1). I can shared files and folders between all. Each computer only has one user defined (default admin user).
I need to make this work as I have to document it for other end users who will be using an application I created that requires an SQL Database and it needs to be accessible by other users on their network.
