Can't Configure Log Shipping On A Workgroup Network

Apr 10, 2007

I have a WORKGROUP network with 2 SQL Server 2005 servers. I want to configure for log shipping.

When I try and set up the 'Secondary Database Settings', and try and run the process, it gets an error saying it cannot access the backup file (the secondary cannot access the backup file on the primary). The file is there. It is shared. I have created local accounts on both machines called 'SyncAccount', and have given full control over the shared directory (on the primary) and local directory on the secondary. I have chaged the SQL Agent to use the local account.

I have tested access for the created user by doing a "runas" from the command prompt.

I have invested hours in this. I have found several relevent artcles, but have not found the answer.

What is wrong with this thing?

Log Shipping In Workgroup Environment

Jul 19, 2007

I have two SQL servers that I am trying to setup log shipping on. I am unable to get the restore of the initial database to work on the standby server. It gets a "unable to open file" error when trying to do the restore.

I have created a "syncaccount" user on both machines, and both have same password. I have used configuration manager to set the user/password for the agents on both servers.

I have given syncaccount admin access. I have added syncaccount to the shares on both servers.

Wy am I getting this error.

Does anyone else think it is VERY difficult to make this function work.

Reporting Services On A Workgroup Based Network?

Feb 28, 2007

Can I use Reporting Services 2005 in a workgroup to serve reports for a windows application which is distributed accross the network?

I've already tried but when the application on a client pc requested a report from the report server i got a message about not having enough permissions to see the report. The windows application was builded using VB .NET 2.0 and VS2005.

The report server instance is installed on a server 2003 enterprise along with the SQL Server 2005.

If this is possible how can set permisions or make my application to be able to requests and show reports?

Thanks a lot to anybody who takes the time to answer.

Backup To Network Drive Using Workgroup/Standard.

Jun 18, 2007

I am using SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. I am planning on upgrading to either Workgroup or Standard edition. While working with Express Edition I did find out that this version does not support backup to a network drive.
My question is:

Is it possible to backup directly to a network drive using a Workgroup/ Standard edition of SQL Server rather than backing up to a local drive and then 'copy and paste' to a network drive like the Express Edition. My other question is :

Given a database limit of 50GB, which one of the editions, Workgroup or Standard, will be appropriate for use.Thank you for your time and patience.

Can I Configure A Separate Zip Job As Part Of Log Shipping

Feb 6, 2008

Hi

We are planning to setup log shipping model being setup between two sqlserver 2005 enterprise edition.

Our transaction log backup sizes are not consistent through out the day.The following is the scenario.

T1 at 8.00 -- 315MB

T2 at 8.30 -- 152MB

T3 at 9.00 -- 2.5GB

T4 at 10.00 -- 500MB

The bandwidth available is 25MB/minute. We are taking the backups of Tlogs at 30mins interval. Now at 'T3' log transfer we want to zip the file on the primary server, copy the file over the WAN and unzip it standby server.

Now i wanted to know whether to perform this kind of action(Zip,copy, unzip), can i create a separate job on primary ?? which will put the unzipped file on standby and allow the log shipping job to restore the log file (T3)

Also i wish to carry my T3,T4 etc backup -- copy-- restores through my Log shipping activity.

I cannot take 15mins backup on primary server to reduce the transaction log backup size.Thts another constraint i have.

Also tell me how to zip and unzip thru command line if u hve any link.

Please advice me

thnks for the help in advance

[DBNETLIB][ConnectionRead (recv()).]General Network Error. Check Your Network Documen

Sep 30, 2004

Hello all,

We have a Windows 2003 Web Edition server serving a site through IIS. It connects to a Windows 2003 Standard Edition server running SQL 2000 SP3a.

This site receives the following error as seen in the topic:
[DBNETLIB][ConnectionRead (recv()).]General network error. Check your network documentation.

We've configured the server network utility to only allow TCP/IP connections. The connection string for the site is as follows:

<%
' FileName="Connection_ado_conn_string.htm"
' Type="ADO"
' HTTP="false"
' Catalog=""
' Schema=""
MM_connSpankMSSQL_STRING = "Provider=sqloledb;Data Source=SERVER_IP,1433;Network Library=DBMSSOCN;Initial Catalog=ourmaindb_1;User ID=ourmaindb_1;Password=hotcookies;"
%>

Any ideas or tips on solving this issue? We've noticed it is due to larger queries as smaller ones do work with no problems.

The servers are behind a BSD box running iptables, has 1433,1434 along with standard web ports wide open. Anything outbound is allowed.

Some further testing via ODBC on the IIS server improved things. No more connection pooling for the SQL Server driver allows for 1/3 of the query to run. Still 2/3s of it doesn't show up, and that general network error message appears.

Should have 330 rows if it works right.

Hi
While running a DTS, many times the error message: "[DBNETLIB][ConnetionWrite (WrapperWrite()).]General network error. Check your network documentation." appears.
Does somebody knows why?

I am running the DTS from a computer (not the server where the DTS is stored) and it is connected without any problem when this happens.

Log Shipping: How To Failback After A Failover Log Shipping?

Jun 8, 2006

Hi,

I 'm sure I am missing something obvious, hopefully someone could point it out. After a failover log shipping, I want to fail back to my inital Primary server database; however, my database is marked as loading. How can I mark it as normal?

I did the failover as follow:

I did a failover log shipping from the 2 server Sv1 (Primary) and Sv2 (Secondary) by doing the following

1) Stop the primary database by using sp_change_primary_role (Sv1)

2) Change the 2nd server to primary server by running sp_change_secondary_role (Sv2)

3) Change the monitor role by running sp-change_monitor_role (Sv2)

4) Resolve the log ins - (Sv2)

5) Now I want to fail back - I copy the TRN files to Sv1 - use SQL Ent to restore the database at point in time. The task is done; however, the database is still mark as loading. I could not use sp_dboption.

I appreciate any suggestion.

Thanks in advance

General Network Error. Check Your Network Documentation

Jan 9, 2006

I use sqlclient to connect directly from my mobile 5 pocketpc to a sql server 2005 database on my desktop.

I use a sqldatareader to traverse the results of a query that delivers 2 fields: (1) the filespec, and (2) the image field.

I use a filestream with a binary writer to write the contents of the image data to the pocketpc's storage card.

I have a test table with 10 images, not one more than 4 MB.  I cannot complete a test run prior to receiving the  general network error.

The pocketPC is connected via activesync to the desktop, and I connect to the database with:

Integrated Security=false;
user id=sa
password=admin.

Any help with this strange error would be greatly appreciated.

How To Set Access Workgroup

Problem is that the 'mdb' is subscribed to a 'mdw' workgroup and I have been unable to workout / read how to get the SSIS manager to join the workgroup. Connection fails because "...you don't have necessary permission..."

I was able to do this previously for SQL 2k by messing with the registry, but I'm now on unfamiliar teritory.

Workgroup Upgrade

Jul 6, 2007

Has anyone had problems like this.
I recently got SQL Server 2005 Workgroup edition. I did the normal
'read everything I could' to make sure I was getting the correct version for my business.
After having to wait 4 weeks to upgrade, as we were waiting for our accounting system to be upgraded to come inline with SQL 2005, I came across the problem where DTS is not really compatible to the degree I needed with this edition.
I have since gone back to the reseller and they say we can't exchange it for Standard edition as 4 weeks has passed.
The only thing we can do is pay out (1 month later) another £6,000 to get the version we need, totaling £11,000
Being that we are a small business, paying out another £6,000 isn't an option.
Does anyone have any good advise on this?
Many thanks

Domain Vs. Workgroup

Jan 31, 2008

My company has a large-ish website and we are migrating to new
servers. There will be a web server (accessible to the world) backed
by a SQL Server 2005 Standard server (only accessible by the web server and
through VPN/Remote Desktop to administrators and our internal
network). We can either put the database server (which is not in a
cluster) on our domain or leave it in a workgroup. My first thought
is leave it in a workgroup simply for security and reliability (i.e.
if the DC goes down or loses connectivity), but people here are
disagreeing with me.

Should I put the database server (which is not used internally at all)
on the domain or leave it in a workgroup?

Connecting To MDF File Over Workgroup

Aug 16, 2006

Hi
I've build a client management (Windows) application in VS2005 which works fine on the local development machine but falls over when trying to connect to the SQL Server Express file located on a second machine on the same Workgroup. Several of the apllications will connect to the database file from networked computers.
The error I get when testing the connection or trying to connect via the App is:---------------------------------------------------------------The file "Z:BushBreaks.MDF" is on a network path that is not supported for database files. An attempt to attach and auto-named database for file z:ushbreaks.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened or it is on a UNC share.---------------------------------------------------------------
How can I configure this database and/or connection to be able to allow connections to the MDF file? Please note that security is not an issue if that is at all relevant.

We have a set of client servers which will include a SQL Server 2000 active/passive cluster attached to a SAN. We have all the equipment here (no attachment to client site) to configure. My worry is since it will have to be setup as a workgroup, and then shipped to client to add to their domain, is this a doable option. has anyone had to do this or tried this? Or would we be better off shipping whole thing to client and setting up cluster there?
