Can't Connect From A Vista Client To SQL 2005 Box,other Machines Work Fine
Oct 27, 2006
Hey. I've a windows vista machine which can't connect to SQL 2005 box. Other machines which are lower than vista work fine. Also, vista box can connect to other SQL 2005 instances but can't connect to only one instance. But, I can connect to the instance fine from my XP box. Also, it's not a permissions issue. This user is an SA and can connect form some other machine. SQL 2005 box is at 2047 version right now. And, the user is able to connect to some other boxes which are also at 2047. Please help. Thank you
I have 2 networked PC's both running vista ultimate
1st is Laptop and is running its own SQL Server at laptoplaptopSQL 2nd is Desktop and is running its own SQL Server at desktopdesktopSQL
Now both machines have seperate windows login accounts.
When I go SQL Server management studio I go to browse and each machine can see the other machines SQL Server, but when I go to login I get SQL Login falied for users" The user is not associaed with a trusted SQL server connection".
So I then go to logins new login and try to add my other pc's user account. The problem I see is that when I go to search and then location it only shows its own PC's location and not the location of my other networked pc? So if I am on Desktop and in my theory want to add laptopuser to the desktop SQL Server logins I get:
"create failed for login laptopuser
An exception occurred while executing Transact SQL statement laptopuser is not a valid windows NT name. give the complete name
Windows 2003 Server and all client PCs are all on the same network. I installed SQL 2005 std version on windows server 2003 and created a database and tables in it.
I have two users, who want to connect to SQL server 2005 from their PCs (they have windows XP):
These are two things that I need to facilitate:
1) They want to be able to write queries using Query Designer and run from their PCs.
2) I created an MS Access database on my PC, I want to use Access database as a front end to the SQL server database. I will create queries, forms in Access DB, and I want to be able to get the data from SQL server Database to do this. I guess I can use ODBC to connect to tables in SQL server database.
3) I want to connect SQL server to Oracle database, and run oracle stored procedures. I want to load the results of oracle stored procedures into SQL server database tables. I guess I will use IIS for this.
Any suggestions are appreciated, especially with item number 1.
Hello,Is it necessary to upgrade the Client Connectivity Tools on all clientmachines after the SQL Server database server is upgraded from Version7.0 to 2000?Thank you in advance!Eddy
I'm trying to use SQL Management Studio to connect from a Vista SQL 2005 client w/ SP2 over to a Windows XP workstation running SQL server developer edition (non-sp2) using windows authentication.
I'm already preauthenticated by network shares to the xp workstation. This worked just fine in windows xp but stop working in vista.
After searching around, i found out that vista handles trusted authentication differently than windows xp due to changes in the SSPI. Logging in as sql authentication works fine. Logging in as windows authentication does not.
UPDATE: I found out that two workstations running vista and sql 2005 sp2 cannot connect to each other using windows trusted authentication!!!
What the heck?
UPDATE: I found out that my IIS 7.0 using ASP.NET and connecting to SQL 2005 (non sp2) on a Windows 2003 server (SP1) WILL connect to the database using trusted authentication... apparently IIS can access the credentials and pass them to the sql 2005 box just fine. My Sql 2K5 SP2 tools cannot. I'm forced to use SQL authentication to the box.
Same thing applies with a Windows XP SP2 box running SQL 2005 (non sp2).
Here is my sql server error log off of the windows xp workstation:

hi,i have installed sqlserver 2005 on windows vista but it couldn't establish a connection with my computer. whats wrong with it? and i write my comp name to the server field which is located on the start window in mssql,
My instance of SQL Server Developer stopped working after upgrade of OS from Vista to XP. I have also installed SP1 & SP2. Still it is not working. The message that I get when I start SQL Server Management Studio is "The application cannot start."
How to avoid a SQL Native Client Instalation (a corrupted package ? from MSDN Disc !?) during MS SQL 2005 Server Standard instalation on MS Windows Vista Ultimate RC1 ?!?
Generally after this error all instalation failed !
have removed bsn contact manager and all sql related files from previous installation attempts, rebooted so should be a clean install - but still it fails
what did I miss or what am I doing wrong?
here are the logs with ref to the two items that fail

Can I access from App machine (on WinXP) to SQL 2005 Exp machine (on WinXP) ?
I installed SQL 2005 Exp SP2 on Win XP SP2 on my PC. Please consider following environment:
- My PC name: MyPC
- Database name : MyData
- Database role for MyData without any permissions: MyDBRole
- Application role for MyData having all permisions: MyAppRole
- Database user: MyDBUser
- SQL Login: MyLogin (WinXP Limited Login) mapped to MyDBUser
- Application Name to access MyData: MyApp
- Using Application Role MyRole in MyApp
I am accessing data from MyApp within MyLogin. When I want to access from other tool like Management Studio Express, I can not access it and that that is what I want.
Till now it is OK when I am doing all these things on MyPC.
Now question is : Is it possible to connect from other PC (say CleintPC) running Windows XP SP2 use MyApp ?
I think ClientPC should access MyPC through MyPC's MyLogin.
[ I have tried successful simple SQL server connection with MyPC's Guest Login]
Please tell me is it possible ? (Running SQL Express on one machine, Application on second machine and both machine's operationg system is Windows XP)
Hi all. I have a 64 bit Windows 2003 cluster with 4 named instances of SQL Server 2005.
Im unable to connect via ODBC or from applications from Windows Vista to the named instances. There are no problem connecting to default intances.
The ODBC give me a SQL State 08001 error. In the bottom of the error it talks about not allowing remote connections, but the instances allows both TCPIP and named pipes.
The SQL 2005 cluster are running SP2 and Vista have Native Client upgraded to SP2.
While installing SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition on Windows Vista Ultimate the setup alerts me "there are known compatibility problems, please install SP2 after this". So ok, all went nice and installed without error. IIS 7 installed fully, so all green in setup display. (But after installation i do not see any service which begins with SQL***...) At the end, the setup wanted to start the administration Tool. Ok, but my name was not listed, so i could not add me to the permitted users. I can not use any tool, because i have no rights.
Some Ideas?

I'm working on a C# 2008 project, when i add a CE Database to it, then publish the app, the installer wants to download and install the entire SQL Server Express product on the client machines. My understanding is that I should be able to embed this database right into the app, but it defeats the purpose to have the installer download and install the entire express product (the actual project is 1 meg).
Is this expected behavior? or am I doing something wrong?
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1)
------------------------------ What's blocking my remote connection to SQL 2005 on Windows 2003? I am using Vista Ulttima and the above message comes up after I clicked connect. However I have no problem to connect to same database from same location using XP. Can someone help?
Hello I use SQL 2005 - SQL Server Management Studio to connect to my hosting SQL Server to manage my database , its about 1 month which I have installed Vista and SQL 2005 its working fine in local , but today I just wanted to connect to my remote server and I got this error :
Cannot connect to <My server IP Address>
I thought its a server problem , but its not. I tested it by connecting using same SQL 2005 on a windows xp system , the problem is only in vista, by the way its SQL 2005 SP2
Database server: - Remote machine running SQL 2005 Standard as a named instance - Named pipes and TCP are enabled for remote connections - SQLBrowser service is running - Listening on default named pipe (\servernamepipeMSSQL$instancenamesqlquery)
Client: - Vista Business machine - Not in same domain as server, but on the same network (via Cisco VPN) - SQL 2005 Express is installed (for use with local databases) - Windows Firewall enabled - Running Symantec Antivirus, Corporate Edition
Connectivity: - I CAN connect to SQL 2005 databases on the remote server using "nperverinstancename" - I CAN connect to SQL 2005 databases on the remote server using Excel 2007
The problem is that I cannot successfully create an ODBC datasource using the "ODBC Data Source Administrator" application. I'm using the "SQL Server" driver and trying to create a System DSN. I'm also running the tool with elevated permissions.
- When I try to use "servernameinstancename" as the server and TCP as the connection type, I get this error:
Connection failed: SQL Server Error: 18452; "[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server] Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.
- When I try to use "npervernameinstancename" as the server and Named Pipes, I get this error:
Connection failed: SQLState: '01000'; SQL Server Error: 1326; [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]ConnectionOpen(Connect()). Connection failed: SQLState: '08000'; SQL Server Error: 17; [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
Help! I've really been beating my head against the wall on this one. It all works just fine with a Windows XP client machine.
I have a server with a sqlexpress database on it. It has 'Allow Remote Connections' checked It has the Browser Service enabled and started utilizing Surface Area Configuration It has Local and Remote Connections Using both TCP/IP and named Pipes.
I have used http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277
And one machine can connect to it fine.. . but others can't?
I am trying to link tables from an access 2003 frontend to sql server 2005 backend.
I am doing this in a vmware test environment. I am using vmware server and running sbs 2003 and xp sp2 client. Both virtaul machine can talk to each other(using local host connection).
I have tried to create a dsn to the sql server but i cannot connect. I can ping the sbs server through the command interface but the error i get when i try to connect is :
Connection failed: Sql state: hyt00 sqlserver error: 0 microsoft odbc sql server driver timeout expired.
spent a day trying various combinations - still no joy.
i have a small problem to connect SQL Native ODBC Client to a mirrored Database. The connection goes without any problem when I connect to a primary Database, but when i give this connect string to an ODBC Client ""Server=Partner_A; Failover Partner=Partner_B; Database=XXX; Network=dbmssocn"", then i get an connect fail. There are no firewalls and other things on the network. I am also able to connect to a mirror database during failover, but I'm not able to set both servers on the ODBC Connection.
Help Me In This : My Client Applicaion Can't Connect To Sql Server 2005 Express
Story :
I have Application Coded by C# To Connect To Sql Express Data Base , And I have Form In This Application To Configure The Connection String .
This Application Is Tested Local Ok (MY Server Name :- .SqlExpress ) When i User This Application In Client In Same Network And Try To Connect To The Data Base In Server (My Server Name :- ServerNameSqlExpress ) This Error Appeared "Server Does Not Exist Or Access Denied"
Note : I Configure My Server Configuration And Enabled The Tcp/ip .
Questions : How Can I Connect To Data Base From Client To Server Through NetWork Connection Using ServerNameInstance ?
How Can I Connect To Data Base From Client To Server Through NetWork Connection Using IpInstance ?
How Can I Connect To Data Base From Client To Server Through InterNe ?
All This Questions Using Sql Server 2005 Express .
I have many jobs on sql 05 and all work but one. This one writes to an Access DB on the same server as SQL. The package works fine. But when executed in the context of the SQL Agent job, it fails.
Jobs that write to a text file work fine. The Access DB has no password required. By the way, that job in sql 2000 worked fine.
When I'm using SQL server 2005, and ODBC drive €śSQL Native Client€? I get an error when executing the below given code. Error Message: €śTransaction cannot start because more than one ODBC connection is in use.€?
But this works well with SQL Server 2000 with ODBC drive "SQL Native Client" and in SQL server 2005 also when I used ODBC drive €śSQL Server€?.
I used aTrgConn.Execute(€śBegin Transaction€?) and it's working properly. But unfortunately I cannot use this method, because I want to run the same code with Oracle ODBC as well. Is this a known issue in SQL Native client drive with SQL server 2005? Do you know a solution for this?
Please Help..............
Thanks in advance.
Code:
Dim aTrgConn As New ADODB.connection Dim aCmdIns As New ADODB.Command Dim aCmdUpd As New ADODB.Command
aTrgConn.Open sConnStr
Set aCmdIns.ActiveConnection = aTrgConn Set aCmdUpd.ActiveConnection = aTrgConn
I have the following query which works fine when it's executed as a single query. but when i union the result of this query with other queries, it returns a different set of data.
any one know why that might be the case??
select top 100 max(contact._id) "_id", max(old_trans.date) "callback_date", 7 "priority", max(old_trans.date) "recency", count(*) "frequency" --contact._id, contact.callback_date from topcat.class_contact contact inner join topcat.MMTRANS$ old_trans on contact.phone_num = old_trans.phone where contact.phone_num is not null and contact.status = 'New Contact' group by contact._id order by "recency" desc, "frequency" desc
i've included the union query here for completeness of the question
begin declare @current_date datetime set @current_date = GETDATE()
select top 100 _id, callback_date, priority, recency, frequency from ( ( select top 10 _id, callback_date, 10 priority, @current_date recency, 1 frequency --, DATEPART(hour, callback_date) "hour", DATEPART(minute, callback_date) "min" from topcat.class_contact where status ='callback' and (DATEPART(year, callback_date) <= DATEPART(year, @current_date)) and (DATEPART(dayofyear, callback_date) <= DATEPART(dayofyear, @current_date)) -- all call backs within that hour will be returned and (DATEPART(hour, callback_date) <= DATEPART(hour, @current_date)) and (DATEPART(hour, callback_date) <> 0) order by callback_date asc --order by priority desc, DATEPART(hour, callback_date) asc, DATEPART(minute, callback_date) asc, callback_date asc ) union ( select top 10 _id, callback_date, 9 priority, @current_date recency, 1 frequency from topcat.class_contact where status = 'callback' and callback_date is not null and (DATEPART(year, callback_date) <= DATEPART(year, @current_date)) and (DATEPART(dayofyear, callback_date) <= DATEPART(dayofyear, @current_date)) and (DATEPART(hour, callback_date) <= DATEPART(hour, @current_date)) and (DATEPART(hour, callback_date) = 0) order by callback_date asc ) union ( select top 10 _id, callback_date, 8 priority, @current_date recency, 1 frequency from topcat.class_contact where status = 'No Connect' and callback_date is not null and (DATEPART(year, callback_date) <= DATEPART(year, @current_date)) and (DATEPART(dayofyear, callback_date) <= DATEPART(dayofyear, @current_date)) and (DATEPART(hour, callback_date) <= DATEPART(hour, @current_date)) order by callback_date asc ) union ( select top 100 max(contact._id) "_id", max(old_trans.date) "callback_date", 7 "priority", max(old_trans.date) "recency", count(*) "frequency" --contact._id, contact.callback_date from topcat.class_contact contact inner join topcat.MMTRANS$ old_trans on contact.phone_num = old_trans.phone where contact.phone_num is not null and contact.status = 'New Contact' group by contact._id order by "recency" desc, "frequency" desc ) ) contact_queue order by priority desc, recency desc, callback_date asc, frequency desc
works fine in designer but when i load the report services I get the following error anybody know what to do there is one subreport with this report maybe the passing value but what could be wrong ????

SSRS 2000 Data driven subscription uses a SQL query to create report parameter values.
The subscription errors are inconsistent meaning sometimes no reports in a batch fail and sometimes 3 out of 5 will fail. I don't think it is data related because I'm using the same data each time.
When a report fails to email there is a consistent error related to rendering a chart. That message is in red below.
The data source is Analysis Services 2000. Has anyone seen this before? I've seen a lot of postings that are similar but no solutions. Is it possible for RS to lose data or get corrupt data from an MDX query?
Is there a timeout between RS and Analysis Services (PivotTable Service) to check?

I have a drilldown report includes three groups. I add the last group for pagination. But the details in each page doesn't accord to I specified and the detail record number is different in different page.
Another issue is the interactive sort always sort in the first page scope. I set the data region or grouping to the table, and evaluate expression scrope to Detail scope.
I just upgraded from Windows XP Pro to Windows Vista Bussiness and tried to reinstall SQL Server 2005 Developers Edition. After the installation i downloaded (using microsoft windows update) and installed all the service packs for sql and vista available.
My problem is when i open sql server management studio and try to connect to my default instance using windows authentication and database engine, an 18456 error occurs.
I enabled all the protocols and all the ports I disabled windows firewall and antivirus (eset nod32) I installed all service packs available I have also installed Visual Studio 2005 without installing sqlexpress
But nothing happens!
Please i am very desperate, any information will be gratefully accepted.
This is my installation Information

Using a 32-Bit SQL Server 2008 Express on my LOCAL PC. I downloaded the Advantage 8.1 OLE DB Provider and created a linked server to a REMOTE Advantage 8.1 database server. There is no data dictionary on the Advantage server.
Here is my linked server:
EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedserver @server = N'1xx.1xx.xx.1xx', @srvproduct=N'Advantage', @provider=N'Advantage OLE DB Provider', @datasrc=N'1xx.1xx.xx.1xxeccET', @provstr=N'servertype=ads_local_server;tabletype=ads_cdx;'--tabletype=’ADS_ADT’ (this test works too) EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedsrvlogin @rmtsrvname=N'1xx.1xx.xx.1xx',@useself=N'False',@locallogin=Null,@rmtuser='adssys',@rmtpassword=Null
Testing the link succeeds with above. Using “ads_REMOTE_server” instead of “ads_local_server” and the test fails. Here is my problem, using the following queries will not work. Perhaps it’s a permissions issue? When I specify my local credentials for the remote server in the linked server it still does not work.
SELECT * FROM OPENQUERY([1xx.1xx.xx.1xx], 'SELECT * FROM ActType')
OLE DB provider "Advantage OLE DB Provider" for linked server "1xx.1xx.xx.1xx" returned message "Error 7200: AQE Error: State = HY000; NativeError = 5004; [Extended Systems][Advantage SQL][ASA] Error 5004: Either ACE could not find the specified file, or you do not have sufficient rights to access the file. Table name: ActType SELECT * FROM ActType". Msg 7321, Level 16, State 2, Line 2
An error occurred while preparing the query "SELECT * FROM ActType" for execution against OLE DB provider "Advantage OLE DB Provider" for linked server "1xx.1xx.xx.1xx".

OK, the problem is that if a run the below query in server01, i get error 512:
Msg 512, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Subquery returned more than 1 value. This is not permitted when the subquery follows =, !=, <, <= , >, >= or when the subquery is used as an expression.
But, if run the same query in the server02, the query work fine -.
I know that I can use IN, EXISTS, TOP, etc ... but I need understand this behavior.
I've just upgraded SQL 2005 Standard to Developer on Vista Business (actually had to uninstall whole SQL 2005 product in order for the upgrade process to work)
But it seems that RS didn't completely uninstall (the new install said it was still there).
I've reapplied SP2 and The DB Engine and SSAS seem to be fine - but unfortunately RS is now crippled.
I've re-attached the two RS databases - ReportServer and ReportServerTempDB
Everything looks OK in the RS Configuration Manager - the DB version is reported as C.0.8.54 in the Database Setup page, and all the options above are Green Ticked.
But when I try to browse to the ReportServer from IE (Started as Administrator) it gives "Server Application Unavailable"
The Application Error log says "A request mapped to aspnet_isapi.dll was made within an application pool running in Integrated .NET mode. Aspnet_isapi.dll can only be used when running in Classic .NET mode. Please either specify preCondition="ISAPImode" on the handler mapping to make it run only in application pools running in Classic .NET mode, or move the application to another application pool running in Classic .NET mode in order to use this handler mapping."
An earlier error from IE suggested running C:Windows>system32inetsrvAPPCMD.EXE migrate config "Default Web Site/ReportServer" which was successful: "Successfully migrated section "system.web/httpHandlers"
Other than that I have changed nothing in the IIS setup from when RS was working fine.
When I try and connect to RS from SSMS it gives the error "
The report server cannot open a connection to the report server database. A connection to the database is required for all requests and processing. (rsReportServerDatabaseUnavailable) Get Online Help
Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE'. " I'm sufferring all this nightmare because I need semi-additive measures in SSAS for a customer demo I'm trying to prepare - which wasn't available in the Standard Edition.
I've already had to wipe Vista off my laptop once before - in order to completely uninstall RS - I'd rather not have to do it again if possible. (I've also tried going back to XP, but my nice fast new Dell Inspiron 1721 doesn't have any XP display drivers and Dell say they only support Vista on this machine!)
Any help on getting RS going on Vista - much appreciated!
Does anyone know if you can run MSSoap on a Windows Vista OS? reason being I have upgraded my laptop from Windows XP to Vista and now I cant get SOAP to work atall, where as on Windows XP I could.
Add ISAPI Extension .WSDL to use "C:Progra~1Common~1MSSoapBinariesSOAPIS30.dll" if its a Windows 2003 server then I allow unknown ISAPI Extensions Configure user credentials to run the SOAP Objects under Directory SecurityAuthentication Setup Virtual Direcorys for each of my SOAP Objects Restart IISThen with a bit of luck it all kinda works however under Windows Vista things are slightly different in that I cant find where to add the ISAPI Extension for the .WSDL or where to set user credentials to run my SOAP Objects.
When i use my test application to call one of my SOAP Objects I get a 5415 Timeout.
Has anyone got any ideas what i'm doing wrong or if i need to configure anything differently or install a newer version of the SOAPToolkit or anything?
