I have a huge connectivity issue that I can't seem to solve.
We're using SQL Express Edition as a local data store that is participating as a subscriber to SQL Server Enterprise Edition. Perfectly valid and supported.
Now the issue. I have the Express Edition on one machine connected just fine, but the other one absolutely refuses. Here is what I did for the one that connected correctly:
1. Enable remote connections for the Express Edition instance and restart the instance
2. Added the SQL Agent service account on the server to the SQLServer2005MSSQLUser$machine$SQLEXPRESS group on the local machine (yes, I want it to have that level of authority)
3. Connected to the machine with Express Edition to the network via VPN.
4. On the server, opened Management Studio and connected to the Express Edition on the machine to verify connectivity
Everything works.
On the machine that refuses, I've duplicated the steps above and it absolutely refuses to connect. I have verified that remote connections are enabled. I have tried connecting via both name as well as IP, just to rule out DNS resolution - neither works. I don't have any security issues. I can go all the way to mapping the c$ share on the machine with the Express Edition directly from the desktop of the server. I can browse for SQL Servers on the network and the machine shows up in the list, so I know that it is being recognized as having an instance of SQL Server. I can't find a single, solitary reason why it should throw a login failure. The message that I'm getting is as follows:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)
Please, I use tyhe Visual Studion 2005 SQL Server Express Edition Management Studio (SMSE) to create the backend database and trying to set the connectionstring from the web config file, but what I continue to get as an error is that "<computername>/ASPNET" login failed for that user, cannot login to the Management Studio. This is my expression from the web config file <connectionStrings><clear /><add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS; Database=<dbname>;User Instance=true; Integrated Security=true" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> </connectionStrings> Is there anything I do wrong? Please, I need to solve this and it's urgent. Thanks Kayode Banjo Programmer
We are having 2012 Enterprise Edition,If I installed the Express Edition in other Client system is it possible to connect the Server system by using Express Edition....And Can we Connect the other server editions like Enterprise,Standard..etc by Express edition...
What could be the possible reason for this and how can i configure sql server 2005 express edition to make connections without specifying any portnumber in the connection string. Both the sqlserver database service and browser services are running.
I have installed SQL 2005 Express Edition on a Windows 2003 Web Edition server. Everything installed correctly, no errors to be found. I also have:
Local & Remote Connections using TCP/IP only turne don
SQL Browser is running as well.
I have tried connecting with the most recent CTP of Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express 9.00.1399.00
When trying to connect using the SA account I recieve:

(Provider: Named Pipes Provider, error 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 53)
After that failed I tried creating a connection locally on the server using ODBC Manager with no luck as well.

I am developing a program to connect to SQL 2005 Express. I don't know if I need any CAL license in order to make the connection. If it is not necessary for the Express Edition case, how about if my client upgrate to SQL 2005 in the future? Do I need CAL license for SQL 2005?
I have a c# application running on my machine. I want to point to a sql server data base express edition running on other machine. By default, from server explorer Ionly acces data base files of the local machine. I dont have acces to remote servers.
I used the file explorer and opened the mdf file on remote server. I tried to acces the mdf file remotely but i got excepcion.
My questios are:
- Is sql server 2005 express edition supporting remote connection to mdf data base file?
- In other words, I can remotelty conncect to mdf file from remote machine ?
So, I how can point my application to remote sql server 2005 express edition data base running on other machine?
Hi, I am looking to using the express edition toolkit for its BI tools but noticed the that it doesn't support a Database engine. If I am running SQL Express edition, & install the Express toolkit, will this remove the Database engine functionality of the Express edition? Will there be conflicts? Will they run as separate GUI's or is the toolkit added to the Express edition GUI?
Thank you very much for any suggestions anybody might have on this
I've installed Visual Basic 2005 express edition & tried to connect to SQL Server 2005 express edition. I noticed that VB2005 Express Edition doesn't have any OLEDB provider for SQL Server. The only OLEDB Provider is for M.Access. Is this correct? if so, what should i do if i want to connect SQL Server 2005 express edition with VB2005 express edition by using OLEDB connection type?
I really appreciate any respond from you guys.. Thank's and waiting for the good news..
Hello!M a newbie.. I just want to know, that wots the difference b/w SQL Server Standard Edition and Express Edition.?And can I use Visual Studio 2005 (Professional Edition) with SQL Server Express Edition.?
Hi i have two version of SQL server express (with Visual Studio 2005) and developer edition i am trying to access an sql database file -created by the express edition integrated with Visual studio- using a developer edition instance can i just attach it and access it. and can i use BI and reporting services on that file
I'm having a problem connecting with a Java application but I CAN connect using my .Net application - the user name and password are the same for both (using the same database on SQL Server Express 2005).
The error I get is: "com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: Cannot open database "CORNERS" requested by the login. The login failed." An interesing note - I get the same message if the database is not running.
SQL Server Express 2005 is installed in mixed mode.
Here is my connection string in the .Net appplication: <add key="connectString" value="Server=(local);UID=sa;PWD=myPasswd;Database=CORNERS" />.
I'm trying to register a developer's 2000 pc from my 2005 pc.
i'm not sure this is even something possible from Dev Edition to Dev Edition- I can register a 2000 server just fine.
I can ping him. Both our systems have remote access 'on'. His server is (local), i've tried connecting to it by just entering his machine name and by using just the ip address. The error I get is "timeout expired. The timeout elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding."
Am I just not registering this properly? I entered just the ip address in the 'server' box. I am connecting as sa with the pw he gave me. When i connect to my server, I use the ip addressinstance. However, I am not sure what to use for the instance when all I see when I look at his machine is (local).
hii download free starter kit timetraker application( i downloaded both Visual web devaloper and sql server express from the Internet) when i tried to run it it is showing the following errorAn error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. I have uninstalled the SQL Server Express Edition that I have installed from the CDs that were given to me during a Chicago Conference when READY TO LAUNCH Visual Studio 2005, SQL SERVER 2005, and Biz Talk 2005. Then I went to microsoft website: http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/register/default.aspx and downloaded and installed the so called Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and I got the messages Error that you read below. Then I Uninstalled Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and went again to msdn website and downloaded Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Advanced Services SP1 and installed it. I got again the same message as below.
MESSAGE:
1. First comes a window with the title: €œsetup.exe €“ Unable to Locate Component€? And it displays a message: This application has failed to start because MSTDCPRX.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem. 2. After I click the OK button of this window it comes another window with the title: €œMicrosoft SQL Server 2005 Server Setup€? And it displays a message: Failed to load SqlSpars.dll
Does anybody can tell what is going on with the 3 times I tried to installed different SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and I get the same message?????
Thanks for your help and support when you have time to respond. Sincerely, TonyC

I installed SQL 2005 express edition in my pc (Pro XP), then I can login from SQL 2005 Managerment Studio Express. After a few days later, I can't do it and an error message as belows:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1) It seems that the default setting does not allow remote connections, however, I connected it before and havn't change any setting. I try to reinstall the studio express but still not working.

A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
I am using Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition along with SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.
Now here's what I did:
Rather than use the Database Explorer within VB2005 EE to create my database, I thought I would try creating my database externally using the downloadable "SQL Server Management Studio Express" tool. (I figured that if I had a stable data model for my database, I could side-step the copying/overwriting issues that come with creating a database as part of a VB solution.)
So having gotten my database setup and populated with some sample data, I am now trying to connect to it from Visual Basic. In VB (in the context of working on a VB Solution), I do the following:
Select Add New Data Source... from the Data menu to bring up the Data Source Configuration Wizard. Choose "Database" for the data source type and click Next. Click "New Connection..." to bring up the Add Connection dialogue.
For data source I choose "Microsoft SQL Server Database File", with ".NET Framework Data Provider..." as the data provider. Navigate to my existing database file (in "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData" folder). Use Windows Authentication.
When I click "Test Connection" or just click "OK", i get the Microsoft Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition error shown at the top of this message.
Is this occuring because I'm trying to access my database as an .MDF file rather than through Named Pipes / Shared Memory / TCP/IP? If this is the case, is there any way that I can tell VB2005 EE to use Named Pipes / Shared Memory / TCP/IP? Is this a fundamental limitation of VB2005 EE?
Thanks in advance to the guru who is able to explain this to me...
I'm getting an error while trying to install SQL Server Express 2005 Express Edition. I'm attaching the log of the installation process here. Please throw some light on the same.

Hello I got a sql server express that i am trying to connect form win or web forms(2.0) €“ express as well.
My problem: Can not connect to the server in any way! Even the designer cont find any sql server on my machine; for example "the data source configuration manager" (gui) in enyn way its can not find the sql server express (2005)
So my question is: if all what i used is the express version - is it possible to connect and use the sql.s express form the vs. express
Everything was working fine. I have been able to connect using windows authentication. Then, I went into the ODBC manager to add a data source and it failed to connect so I went back into the Server management studio to modify users. After doing this I now get an error when I try to conenct the management studio to the SQL server.
I wasn't modifying the login for my windows account that I normally use, I was modifying a different one, however I now get the message "An error has occured while establishing a connection to the SQL server. This kind of problem can ocure because the default behavior of the server does not support all connection methods" blah blah.
Does anyone know how I can attach to the server? Or, do I need to somehow remove the server and create a new one? How would I do that?
I just installed SQL 2005 Dev edition and then updated to SP2. When I connect via SSMS using Windows Authentication, I get a login failure. How do I troubleshoot? Thanks.
I've seen the following error posted when people try to connect to their server via their applications but didn't see anyone having problems when trying to connect with SQL Server Management Studio Express. Am I missing something here? This is the error:<<An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)(Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 2)>>The server is not remote so I don't see why I need to enable remote connection. I am also using the default connection settings.
On my home machine without permanent network connections enabled, I cannot get the Management Studio connect to the database server. Always get this error:
Cannot connect ot MPLIAMSQLEXPRESS
Additional Information:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, erro: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)(Microsoft SQL Server)
I have used the SQL Surface Area Configuration Tool to reset the defaults to allow remote connections, stopped and restarted the server, but still get the same message.
We are trying to install the Standard Edition of SQL Server 2005. We already have SQL Express installed. Standard won't install and Express won't uninstall.
We have tried every suggestion we can find and some we made up. When we try to install Standard, we get to the bit where you choose what you want to install and the only thing available is workstation components.
There are so many cases of this on the Internat that I can't believe MS have not solved the issue. And I am stunned that they want to charge us more money to talk to us about how to fix something we just paid them an arm and a leg for!
What do I need to tell you to get some idea of where to go next with this?
I've installed SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition on a Windows XP ProSP2 machine. It's installed without any problems. When I try to connect to it from another XP SP2 machine (by creatingan ODBC data source) I get a Login error:[ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]ConnectionOpen(Connect()).Connection failed: SQLState: 08001 SQL Server Error: 17SQL Server does not exist or access deniedI can ping the server fine from the other machine, and I've tried thestandard "sa" user/pw as welll as my own logins. The server is configured for mixed authentication (Windows/SQLServer).Can anyone suggest what the problem might be?TIA for any helpIan
I need to create a desktop program on vb.net , based SQL compact edition. but I do not know how to connect to CE database. I already create the sdf file, but I can not connect it from the poject , is there any way to do it ?
In my IPAQ, I have been using SQL CE for databases with various sizes without any problem. I am creating the databases on my desktop using VS 2005. After I moved to VISTA, I have upgraded my VS 2005 to SP1 and SQL CE to 3.1. My databases which were created before worked without any problem. After I have created my databases via 3.1 on the desktop and moved them to Mobile, I had problems.
1. I specify Max database size parameter as the size of the database 2. If the size of the database is smaller than 16 then I specify 128 3. If the database is old version then program runs without any problems whatever the database size is 4. If the database is created with 3.1 and size is small (20MB, 60MB, etc) no problems arise 5. Ä°f the databse is created with 3.1 and size is large (133MB, 174MB) then dbconnection.Open() command runs indefinitely and program hangs up .
My IPAQ runs "Microsoft Pocket PC Version 4.20.1081" and desktop runs VISTA Home Premium. I have installed VS 2005 SP1.
Hey all! I am new in this form and also new with the SQL serve. I have installed that free express edition of SQL server 2005 and when i am trying to connect to server from my C#.net application i am not able to do it and when i am trying to degug it gives me the error that is the user is not SQL thrusted user. I am able to connect directly thru SQL server using this userid and password but not thru VWD 2005 Express application.
I have read online that so many people are having that problem. so is it the problem of swl server Express edition or do i have to make some setting to connect to the application.
Please please please please someone guide me . I am stuck here in the beginning only. I would really appreciate it.
the code that i wrote is here:----

I'm trying to connect to the northwind database thats available online using c# and SQL 2005, both express editions. i used the following command
sqlcmd -S yourServerSQLExpress -E -iinstnwnd.sql
and it connects to the northwind database. but when it comes to the part where i have to select the data source, there are only 2 available - microsoft access database file, microsoft SQL server database file. but according to the microsoft books that i'm following, there should also be a "micosoft SQL server" in the data source list. because of this i cant connect to the database.
