I just installed MSDE over my Windows 2003 box and facing an small problem.
I installed it with SQL security mode and also set a password for user "sa".
Everything looks just fine using "osql" as it uses local address.
But I can't connect to my server from another computer using VS.NET Server Explorer.
It seems as MSDE is set to reject connections from outside by default.
My question is how to enable it so I can connect using my "sa" account.
Appreciate your help in advance.
Hi,
I only have Framework installed on my machine, and I also installed MSDE 2000 Rel. A, using the following command:
C:MSDERelAsetup.exe SAPWD="myPass" INSTANCENAME="myXP"
I can see that the service for this app is running. Though, I could not connect to it using oSql command like the following:
osql -S(local)myXP -E
or
osql -S(local)myXP -Usa, and supply the password "myPass".
The message was:
[DBMSLPCN]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
[DBMSLPCN]ConnectionOpen (Connect()).
Any response would be appreciated.

Hello everybody and happy holidays to all.
I'm new to C#, and I appologize for this basic question.
I am trying to connect to an SQL database from a very short C# program, which I found on the Microsoft site, demonstrating this subject.
Here is my setup:
Windows 2000 Professional
dotNET Framework 1.1 with sp1 installed
MSDE 2000
Note: I do not own nor do I have Visual Studio.NET of any kind installed.
Now, here is what works:
osql -E -S localhostvsdotnet
1>
And I can create and populate a database, which I called mydb.
Now, in my simple C# demo program I have this line
SqlConnection mycon = new SqlConnection("server=localhost;database=mydb;trusted_connection=true");
And the program compiles OK using "csc" command. But when I run it, I get this message:
Couldn't Open Connection to server=localhost;database=mydb;trusted_connection=true
Could anybody comment on what am I missing?
Thanks.

I'm trying to connect to the SharePoint MSDE database from Windows XP
SP2 machine over Ethernet LAN. I was getting server not found or access
denied, until I enabled TCP/IP via svrnetcn.exe. Now, I'm getting
OK
Connection failed:
SQLState: '01000'
SQL Server Error: 10061
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]ConnectionOpen
(Connect()).
Connection failed:
SQLState: '08001'
SQL Server Error: 17
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]SQL Server does not
exist or access denied.
I just did an netstat -an and I don't see the server listening on 1433.
What am I not doing?
The svrnetcn tool has no effect. I make a change and check the logs,
but nothing happens. What would be causing this?
I'm new to asp.net and databases and I'm currently working my way through SAMs Teach Yourself ASP.I am up to working with databases and have successfully installed MSDE using the sql2kdesksp3.exe file. However, when I try to create a new database through the web matrix project I get an 'unable to connect' error. I have tried removing and re-installing the database and I've also re-installed it using the latest file from the MS web site but I still get the same error. I've checked the obvious...that the msde service is running, password is correct, and that checks out ok.Has anyone had a similar problem and resolved it?Thanks.
View 2 Replies View RelatedHi- I am hoping someone can help me or shed some light on an issue I am having.
I have recently moved to a dedicated server with MSDE installed on it. The server was installed as the default instance and I changed the password to the SA account. I then copied my entire SA database over to the new MSDE database and everything was working good so it seemed. I believe at some point during copying of the data, or after installalling an application the SA account begain to fail and the password was changed. I have no idea how this happened, and better yet when I tried to change it logged in as the administrator with OSQL it told me I did not have sysadmin rights (I tried multiple Windows NT Auth logins and still got this error trying to change the password).
So... I reinstalled MSDE and created a named instane. I then attached the mdf/ldf files to my named instance and am able to connect ok from a .NET application directly to my new MSDE Named Instance database. Sounds like everything is great right? Not really, I can't figure out how to connect through enterprise manager and its driving me CRAZY!
1. I CAN connect via any .NET app and a connection string
2. I CAN connect via the server with OSQL
3. I CAN connect via the web based enterprise manager (which is very limited and a freeware ASP app).
4. I CANNOT connect via enterprise manager. I have verified from the (SVRNETCN.EXE utility) that the port is open and have tried connecting to MY_IPADDRESSNAMEDINSTANCE but no luck.
One additional side note, when I wasn't using a named instance I had no problems connecting through enterprise manager to my default MSDE instance.
Any help would be grealy appriciated, this is driving me nuts!

Hi all,
WSUS is installed on my windows 2003 server. During the install, parameter DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS was not specified, and so no remote connection was possible.
I used SVRNETCN.exe to enable TCP/IP remote connection on port 1433. However it seems not to work.
FROM THE SERVER :
osql -E -S MYSERVERWSUS works fine but
osql -E -S 127.0.0.1WSUS doesn't work, i get the famous error
[DBNETLIB]Serveur SQL spécifié non trouvé.
[DBNETLIB]ConnectionOpen (Connect()).
If i user "osql -L" command, my instance doesn't appear in the list
FROM A CLIENT COMPUTER
osql -E -S MYSERVERWSUS and
osql -E -S MY_SERVER_IPWSUS don't work, i get the same error
I've tried tried to understand for hours, and i'm lost. I thought there may be a problem between SQL and 2003, and read SQL sp3a was required. I ran
select @@version from osql and got result
Microsoft SQL Server 2000 - 8.00.881 (Intel X86)
8.00.881 is not referenced in ms support as a patched version number !!!!!
Can anyone help me please ?
Hello,
I have one program using MSDE as database. It runs OK on the machine with MSDE or without MSDE.
But it can not connect to MSDE database if PC with 'Microsoft SQL Server 2005' and 'Microsoft SQL Server Desktio Engine(MICROSOFTSMLBIZ)' installed.
Form SQL Server Server Manager: my instance ...MYINSTANCE and ...SQLEXPRESS are both running OK.
Why not connect to my MSDE instance under this situation? Could anyone give me any advice?
Thanks,

Hello,
I'm not sure if it's the setup I did wrong, but I can't seem to get my
text datatype in my database to store more than 900 characters.
I'm trying to setup a news database for my website, which will populate
the information into a datagrid. To test, I manually added a news
item in the database through the visual studio 2003 gui. I
immediately noticed a problem as the I was getting an error after a
long news item saying:
"The value you entered is not consistent with the data type or length of the column, or over grid buffer limit."
I couldn't find anthing to set the buffer limit and the datatype is
"text" filled with simple text in the column. As a further test,
I
simply entered 12334567890123... up to 900 characters and still
recevied the error.
I would appreciate someone leading me in the right direction on this one.
Thanks a lot.
I am trying to change the computer name of a machine running MSDE but I get an error when SQL Server starts. With regular SQL when I change the name of a computer I re-run setup and setup fixes this problem. MSDE can only be installed from unattended mode so I can’t rerun setup and fix the problem.
My question is "How do I change the name of a computer running MSDE with out reinstalling MSDE"
We currently have the problem, that all our machines are produced with the
same name and afterwards the name is changed. So we have the problem that
the checksum key for the MSDE isn't valid anymore. As MSDE can only be installed
from unattended mode so I can’t rerun setup and fix the problem. Does anyone
know a solution for this problem ?? A program recalculating the cheksum ??

Manfred
I'm not sure if this is the correct forum for this this question but I'll give it a shot.
The only db development that I have ever done is in MS Access. I have a project at work that is being accomplished in VB and I need a db engine to use as the back end. Visual studio came with a copy of MSDE. Is this tool worth using or should I invest in mySQL? Are there any advantages to using MSDE over mySQL?
I designed the AlwaysOn wrong, but every time we fail over from primary server to another server, my applications cannot connect because the sql logins cannot connect to their default databases. Once I run the command to link the login with the user in the default database then the users are able to connect. Did I do something wrong when designing AlwaysOn?

I try to import my SSIS packages which are created using the Business Intelligent studio into SQL server 2005 but I cannot do that.
I am running SQL server 2005 enterprise edition.
Also when i tried to connect to Integration services using Object explorer, it only prompt me for server name. I cannot change the username and password which is disabled.
Then how am i supposed to connect to Integration services on a server in this case?
I'm having a problem connecting with a Java application but I CAN connect using my .Net application - the user name and password are the same for both (using the same database on SQL Server Express 2005).
The error I get is: "com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: Cannot open database "CORNERS" requested by the login. The login failed." An interesing note - I get the same message if the database is not running.
SQL Server Express 2005 is installed in mixed mode.
Here is my connection string in the .Net appplication: <add key="connectString" value="Server=(local);UID=sa;PWD=myPasswd;Database=CORNERS" />.
These are my values in my Java app web.xml -
<init-param>
<param-name>DBDriver</param-name>
<param-value>com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDriver</param-value>
</init-param>
<init-param>
<param-name>DBURL</param-name> <param-value>jdbc:sqlserver://localhostsqlexpress:1055;databaseName=CORNERS</param-value>
</init-param>
<init-param>
<param-name>DBUser</param-name>
<param-value>sa</param-value>
</init-param>
<init-param>
<param-name>DBPwd</param-name>
<param-value>myPasswd</param-value>
</init-param>.
And yes, the port is 1055 - I checked to find it.
I am using Microsoft SQL Server 2005 JDBC Driver 1.0 (sqljdbc_1.0.809.102).
Does anyone have any idea what is wrong so that the login fails in the Java application but works in the .Net application?
I looking for some guidance here. I have database which has exceeded the 2 gig limit. I deleted some old tables in an attempt to acquire some space. This worked out. However when I look at the size of my *.mdf it still appears in excess of the 2 gigs . I know this isn't true since I deleted 500 megs of stuff. How do i reclaim the space (get the file size to report correctly) or do I need to even worry about it.

Hi
For quite some time nowI have been trying to give user rights to my MSDE , needless to say the fruits of my labor have turned up very little success.
So far i have tried using the osql commands to grant user access to my database. I have run the stored procedures(sp_grantlogin ,sp_grantdbaccess ) but to little avail!
So now i have taken a new approach i installed the Enterprise Manager. I have just a minor problem with this new strategy , i don't know how to use it!!
This is what i have prensently installed on my system: Visual studio.Net ,Microsoft SQL(MSDE)
and finally the Enterprise Manager.
My Servername is FRANK.
I have created an instance which is NetSDK (FRANKNETSDK)
My SAPWD is Kildare
I have Mixed Mode
Can anyone please tell me how i can use the Enterprise Manager to grant access to MSDE.
I am sure you have all realized from all these insipid post that i have no experience.
So please be explicit in all your details.
My email roti@videotron.ca
Thank you

I have never done anything with databases, so I am a newbie. My goal is to install an ASP.NET forum, but I need MSDE installed. I downloaded MSDE from the Microsoft website. When I run the setup.exe file, I get an error. It says:
A strong SA password is required for security reasons. Please use SAPWD switch to supply
same. Refer to readme for more details. Setup will now exit.
I looked at the documentation but could not find anything usefull, what do I have to do to install it. Thanks in advance for responses.
How does MSDE handle data mangement? Does it come with sql analyser or some sort of database manager?
Thanks.
Hi,
I am newbie in ASP.NET and MSDE arena. I understand that MSDE has no GUI and I need to have MSDE tools to work with it. I have already installed ASP.NET 1.1 and Microsoft.NET SDK 1.1 and MSDE in my Windown Professional 2000 PC and I have run and tested for .aspx and its working perfectly. But I want to use MSDE to create some database driven web applications.
Could you please help me how I can do that? BTW, I installed Microsoft SQL Web Data Administrator and its giving me SQLWebAdminStart.exe Application error and asking for debugging while opening the program. I am stranded what to do now?
I really appreciate your help.

I just installed MSDE off of disk that came with teach yourself asp.net in 24 hours. To get the program started you must go to run and type cmd and wait for the C prompt. I get this far, but I can't get a C prompt. It always comes up C:sql2ksp3> How do I get a C prompt from here. I know it must be something easy that I am just overlooking or forgot.
Thanks

Hi all,
I have a web application that uses SQL Server. I have 6 clients that all use the same SQL Server database structure.
I know have a new client who is using MSDE as there Database. The Database should have the same table structures as the SQL ones.
So my questions are this:
1. I have a backup of the new clients data. How do I attach it to SQL Server?
2. Does MSDE have stored procedures?
3. Can I write stored procedures in a SQL Database, that reference tables in an MSDE database.
4. Can someone point me in a direction, that can walk me through this?
Thanks
Scott
Hi,
Well i want to ask, Is this true that
We can use the MSDE on commercial basis for a limited usagage with out paying.
The limited usage means that may be upto 20 - 25 concurent users can be use the Engine at a time.
thx for the comments
I installed MSDE 2000 in my system. There is no icon & gui screen. How can i create/alter database using MSDE without using any programming language? from where can i get stored data in msde? How can i take backup for this data?
View 2 Replies View RelatedHello,
Is it possible that i have my webapplication on a webserver and my database on another server?The database is MSDE.Thanks for your respond
I want to connect to the MSDE database and create database and tables etc.., I am successful in creating the database and tabels etc.., as shown below:
string ConnString;
ConnString = "data source=(local);" +
"database=;integrated security=sspi";
SqlConnection SqlConn = new SqlConnection(ConnString);SqlConn.Open();
SqlCommand SqlCmd = new SqlCommand("Create DATABASE dbase1", SqlConn);SqlCmd.ExecuteNonQuery();SqlConn.Close();
but Instead of connecting to the MSDE without giving any database name,canI create the instance of MSDE on the fly and connect to it. Like creating a MSDE OBject to start the MSDE and then connect to it using Windows NT authentication
How do you deal with MSDE on a W98 machine since it can not run as a service?
View 1 Replies View RelatedHi,
I have developed a site for a client using asp and sql server, and now want to roll this out to the client using MSDE, since the only application using the database will be the website, so they really don't need full sql server.
I've seen plenty of articles telling me how this is possible, but I can't find anything telling me how to start.
The webserver will be on the client site, and controlled by myself as this is an intranet application.
Do I install MSDE on the client site from my Microsoft CD's or do I install particular files, and that's just for starters.If anyone has done something similar I would really appreciate their advice.
