Can't Get SS Express SP2 To Install On Vista Build 5744
Nov 14, 2006
Having had no luck getting prior versions of Sql Server Express to install on Vista RC2. I was hoping that SP2 would install with no problems however I'm still getting the same error as before and can't find any working solution to this anywhere on the web.
The actual error I'm getting occurs when the install tries to start the SQL Server service and connect. I get
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup
------------------------------
SQL Server Setup could not connect to the database service for server configuration. The error was: [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Shared Memory Provider: No process is on the other end of the pipe.
Refer to server error logs and setup logs for more information. For details on how to view setup logs, see "How to View Setup Log Files" in SQL Server Books Online.
This error apparently also occurs on other platforms than Vista. Any ideas how to get past this? The Vista install is still pretty much a clean install.
TIA Adrian Heath

I purchased a Dell laptop with Vista. I then downloaded MSSQL Express Edition with Advanced Services (after first downloading .NET 3.5) and when it tried to run the executable, it gave an error that it was not a valid win32 app.
How to I correct this and successfully install MSSQL Express?

I am unable to install Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007. I sought help in the BCM forum, but the developer who I spoke with came to the conclusion that it is a SQL Server Express problem that I am experiencing, and so he recommended that I come here for help.
I am running on Vista Ultimate.
Every attempt I have made to install BCM (and later SQL Express Server 2005 separately, see below) has failed at the same point, with the same error message:
"SQL Server Setup could not connect to the database service for server configuration. The error was: [Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]Login failed for user 'sa'.
Today I attempted to install SQL Express Server SP2 separately on its own, the idea being that if this worked, then I might be able to install BCM on top of it. I attempted the SQL EE SP2 installation after uninstalling all remnants of previous installations to the best of my ablity. The SP2 installation failed at the same point, and had the same appearance, as I saw in all prior attempts. (The installer reported no errors or warnings in its system checks prior to beginning the actual install.)
Here is the summary log from this trial:

Hi,
I have been trying to install SQL Express SP2 (SQLEXPR32.exe) on a Window Vista Home Premium for past 2 days . After failing I tried installing SQLEXPR_ADV. (Maybe I have a corrupted download, desperate enough to try anything.). However it keeps showing the following error:
SQL Server Setup Failed to compile the Managed Object Format (MOF) file C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90Sharedsqlmgmproviderxpsp2up.mof. To proceed, see "Troubleshooting an Installation of SQL Server 2005" or "How to: View SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files" in SQL Server 2005 Setup Help documentation.
I have search through the forums. One of the possibilities is due to a WMI repository corruption. Tried fixing it, but the problem still persists. (Maybe I am doing it the wrong way , I have downloaded the WMIDiag scripts, not too sure if i ran it correctly).
Below is the installation summary:

I have been trying to install BCM 07 and Accounting Pro 07 for a couple days now with the same SQL Server Express eroor. I've also attempted to install SQL Express sp2 alone to no avail either. Here is the log file from my last BCM install attempt. Any advise would be GREAT! I have already tried changing my PC name to CHARLIE which did not resolve it either. Thanks for the help! Charlie

I have tried this several times and each time get the same result. I even installed Visual Studio 2008 beta 2 - everything but SQL Server Express installed fine. The error I get when running the SQL Server 2005 Express download is (from the log file):

I do have the full log. Thanks in advance for any/all help!

I have tried to install SQL Server 2005 Express several times with no success. I have followed the instructions to remove all SQL files on the Programs menu.
Then, when I attempt to install it again, it only goes as far as the database where it stops and gives the error message:
SQL Server cannot write system databases to C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData because it contains files from a previous installation. To continue, move the databases from the specified folder, or specify a different installation folder. Then run SQL Server Setup again.
It doesn't give options and I can only abort the installation.
Does anyone have a remedy for a technologically challenged person?
Thank you.

Steps to install SSX (& Reporting Serivces) on 64 bit Windows Vista Ultimate
I struggled quite a bit over the past few days to complete this install. The sequence of steps is less obvious than those for Windows XP Pro on a 32 bit machine.
I recorded all the steps in one place in cookbook style for non-technical (but database capable) users like myself. I have referenced appropriate other postings and sources for detail steps. These are steps I found useful, you may be in a different situation.
My environment is as follows:
-New HP dv9000 w/ 2GHz and 2GB memory
-Factory installed Windows Vista Ultimate. Note this includes .NET Framework 2.0 so I did not have to deal with installing that.
-I have no extant databases or SQL Server that I am trying to convert or upgrade!
Setup Steps Before Install:
1) Turn off User Account Control.
At present, I am a one-user operation with close control over my system and there seemed to be issues with getting reporting services set up right with UAC. I may come back and modify this step later on and certainly would change this for any releasable systems.
1a)Go to Control Panel Home --> User Accounts --> Turn User Account Control on or off.
1b)Unselect Use User Acount Control.
2)Set up your IIS 7.0 for Reporting Services.
IIS 7.0 has IIS 6.0 Compatibility features turned off out of the box. You will turn them on with this step. This is needed for both Reporting services and to enable the Adminscripts that are used in Step 3 below.
2a) Use the Control Panel --> Programs --> Turn Windows features on and off function.
This is quite nicely desribed with screen shots at:
http://www.iis.net/default.aspx?tabid=2&subtabid=25&i=957
These steps worked for me although they are labeled Vista Beta 2.
3)Set up your 64 bit machine to run 32 bit ASP.NET
This capability is needed to make sure you pass the System Configuration Check for Reporting Services. I don't know the full implications of this step and wonder if it might eventually bite me if I have to flip-flop between 32 and 64 bit ASP.NET or have them both run at the same time.
3a) Open a command line window by:
Start --> Accessories -- Cmd Prompt
3b) In this window type:
cscript %SystemDrive%inetpubAdminScriptsadsutil.vbs set w3svc/AppPools/Enable32bitAppOnWin64 1
At some point, you may wish to go back to 64 bit. For that, see the posting by MihaelaE as an Answer in the SQL Server Reporting Services Forum under a thread started by fagster on 3/8/2007.
Now to actually install SQL Server.
1) Download the 64 bit SSX.
This step fooled me for a while as the 64-bit downloads are 'below the fold' on the web page.
1a) Go to the SSX download page:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/download/
1b) Scroll down the page and below Step 5, Register, you will see this text which takes you to the download you want:
"* For the 64-bit install of SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, click here."
1c) Follow the "click here" to get the download.
2) Install the package from step 1c and you will get SQL Server Express.
2a) The install may fail and complain about not finding a valid SQL Server Native Client Install, sqlncli_x64.msi. You will have to extract the files manually and then run the sqlncli_64.msi package by itself. Then you can go back to step 2 and should be successful.
To do this, see post of Mike Wachal on 4/5/2007 to SQL Server Express Forum, titled "Cannot Install SQL Server Express on Vista Ultimate -- cannot find MS SQL Server Native Client".
3) Now add in the SQL Server Management Studio Express 64 bit version.
3a) Go to the SSX download page:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/download/
3b) Scroll down the page and below Step 5, Register you will see this text which takes you to the download you want:
"* For the 64-bit install of SQL Server 2005 Management Studio Express, click here."
3c) Follow the "click here" to get the download.
4) Now add the SQL Server Reporting Services.
4a) Go to the SSX download page:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/download/
4b) Scroll to Step 3 Download and Install (in the middle of the page) and download SQL Server Express Edition with Advanced Services SP2.
4c) Install, but at the Feature Selection screen, disable all components EXCEPT Reporting Services. You already have the other components installed.
4d) In the install, you will get a screen called "Report Server Installation Options". Go ahead and select the "Install but do not configure the server" radio button.
5) Go ahead and configure SQL Server Reporting Services.
I'm not highly skilled in this area so I recommend the SQL Server Express Video "Learning Video 10: Getting Started with Reporting Services". This is found at: http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/learning/default.aspx
I found this video to be cogent and useful.
That's what it took me to get SQL Server Express installed with reporting services on a 64 bit Vista Ultimate system. Sorry if this is so long but I wanted to cover all the steps that hung me up.
To forum moderators: If I have any errors that will lead people astray, I'm more than happy to correct them.
This posting is "AS IS" with no warrantees and caveat emptor.

I am trying to install SQL Server Express - (the non ADV version) and get the following error.
"An installation package for the product Microsoft SQL Server Native Client cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'sqlncli_x64.msi'".
I have 64 bit Vista Ultimate running on an HP dv9000.
I am using the download from the bottom of the download page for SSX where it says 64 bit version.
Prior to this I got the. "64-bit ASP.net is registered. Required 32-bit ASP.NET to install Microsoft Reporting services 2005(32-bit)." messagd during the pre-install scan. From what I gather in the posts, the reporting issue is different from my installation package problem.
I have been trying to prove a point to friends about how far you can go with SSX but am having no luck installing it. This whole process took 1 hour in XP but I've been stymied for 2 days.
I would appreciate being pointed at the right downloads for what seems to be a simple install.

I don't seem to be able to get AdventureWorksBI installed in Vista. I am running SQLServer 2005 sp2.
When I try to install I get an error:
Error 1316 A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file <path>AdventureWorksBI[1].msi.
If I try to repair the install, I get the message
Error 1321: The installer has insufficient privileges to modify the file C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataAdventureWorksDW_data.mdf
My login has administrator privileges. I have installed and uninstalled for days, so I am not certain what I have mucked up in my registry.
Perhaps the AdventureworksDW examples don't work in Vista? Do I need to wipe the drive and install XP?
Thanks...Marv

Hello,
I've been having some problems trying to install SQL Sever 2005 on my local Vista machine. Using the ISO file that I've downloaded from the MSDN site (twice now) I get an error stating that the Sql.cab file is corrupt. I at first thougt that this was because of a corrupt download but now I wonder because of a second issue. I downloaded the Express version (twice also) and it will not install either. The error for this comes in the initial unpacking of files with a corrupt file as well. As a side note, when I installed Visual Studio 2005 I received an error on the SQL express install that said 'Unexpected value returned' from some process. If anyone can help, I would appreciated the saved hair follicles.

I am unable to make SQL Server 2005 work under Vista. As soon as I try to register a server I get a message saying error 40. It does not seem as straightforward as SQL 2000. Under Registered servers I can see a green arrow and a local instance called paul-pc....
I have no idea what credentials to put into the login properties. I am from an Access background so this is new to me.
I would appreciate it if someone can talk me through the process

Hello members
I tried to install sql server 2005 on the vista.
But It give error message that one of the installation package is not available on the system.
what does it mean?
then I download the SP2 of sql 2005 from the microsoft website.
But when I tried to install this service pack
their is again an error message that this pack has not compatible with this version of vista.
what to do now?
There were three downloads available on website.
should I go for another down load.
Also tell me is there any other option of sql server for example express edition.
can express edition be installed on vista?
Also when I tried to indtall oracle on my system.
Again installation failed.
Vista has no compatibilty with most of the softwares.
Should I Uninstall the vista?
The last question is how to uninstall the vista?
I am facing many problems with this

I've just done a clean install of Vista Ultimate (release). SQL Server 2005 will only install the client tools - it refuses to install any of the server components (including the default instance).
I get the "SQL Server Edition Operating System Compatibility (Warning). " I installed the missing IIS 7.0 which got rid of the IIS warning message.
Any suggestions please?
Thanks

When I try to install Reporting Services on my Vista x64 machine, the following happens:
In the System Configuration Check, there is a "ASP.Net Version Registration Requirement" warning.
On the following section, Reporting Services is greyed out so cannot be installed.I have found many posts on this matter and all of them suggest going into "Turn Windows Features on / off" and enabling various IIS7 features. However, even though I have ticked every possible IIS7 feature the problem remained.
I have also installed SP2, but again this didn't help when I returned to the original installation.
Can anybody please help?

When I install I get a warning that IIS is not running. IIS IS running. Is this why I need the service pack?
I am not getting anything added to program files that allows me to manage SQL Server. I am looking for Enterprise Manager, MMC, or some such thing. How can I get it to install? Is this related to Vista and SP2?
Thanks for your help...Marv

Hi,
I've installed Windows Vista 64 bit on my pc (I had XP Pro). Also I've installed the management studio of SQL Server 2005 developer edition which I've uses also on my XP machine.
I've a online server at "myserver.myprovider.com". With C:WindowsSystem32cliconfg.exe a made a TCP/IP alias to with the name "MySql". In XP I then can connect in Sql management studio to "MySql" and everyting works perfect (I also use some other programs which needs the cliconfg alias.
After I installed Vista, I take the same steps (I've done this over 30 times, but in XP). When I then want to connect to "MySql" in management studio, I get this error: (translated from dutch) "Cannot connect to MySql. Maybe this error is caused by the fact that the SQL Server don't allow external connections. Error: 53.
Can someone help me with this?

I just recently purchased a sony with Vista business preloaded. It seems like it came with MS 2005 Sql Server but I'm not sure what edition. I went to the start menu to locate the Management Studio however the only option was the Configuration file. I went to MS site and downloaded the 2005 Sql Server Express Edition with Advance Service SP2 and it installed correctly. I believe this edition comes with Management Studio. However when I went to my Start Menu, the Management Studio file is still not there. How do I fix this problem? I am new to the MS Sql so a detail explanation will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi Guys,
I was struggling with installing reporting services from Sql 2005 dev edition on windows vista. I somehow managed to install the SQLExpress edition for Reporting Services, but now i want to unistall it and install Sql Reporting Services from Sql 2005 Dev edition CD.
When I try to unistall the SQlExpress Reporting Servie instance, the screen which says unistalling components disappears in a couple of secs and when i refresh the list of programs installed under Programs and features, i can still see SQLExpress Reporting Servies, i do not understand why this is happening and probably this is the reason behind not able to see the Reproting Services check box ungreyed when installing SQL 2005 dev edition.
CAN SOMEONE HELP ME ON THIS PLEASE?
