Can't Install SQL Server 2005 On Windows 2008 Server Core
May 8, 2008
Hi,
I'm trying to install SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition 64-bit on a 64-bit instance of Windows 2008 running as Server Core. I read about an issue in KB article 920201, but I don't even get that far. The setup first tries to install .NET Framework 2.0, which fails with error message:
Error 70243 installing .NET Framework 2.0
I tried installing .NET Framework separately, which indicates that I need to install Internet Explorer 5.01. I'm reluctant to try that, so I'd like to know if the people that actually got to the issue in KB920201 installed IE first (is that even possible?).

Hi,
When I try to install either SQL Server 2005 SP2 or SQL Server 2008 CTP 2 on a trial copy of Windows Server 2008 Web Edition I get no error messages but the SQL engines are not installed. I have been informed that the SQL Server restriction in place for Windows Server 2003 Web Edition is no longer in place for the 2008 version.

Is this information incorrect?

With two 64 bit quad core processors on the server, we have 8 processor cores. Does this mean that we'll need Windows Server 2003 x64 Enterprise edition because Standard only supports up to 4-way SMP?
Thanks!

I
am trying to install SQL 2005 in a 2-node virtual Windows 2003 cluster. I set
the cluster up through Virtual Server 2005 with 2 virtual nodes and one

physical machine. When I try to install a fresh copy of SQL 2005 on my
cluster, I get an error every time. The
error stops the installation while checking system configuration after
installing prerequisites. The log file entry is as follows:

Hello Experts,
I have been unable to install SQL Express 2005 Server on my Windows 2003 Server (with SP2 installed). I keep getting an error message saying that Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 is not installed.
So, I downloaded Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 v2 (WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe) but whenever I try to install it I get an error message saying that "the Service Pack version of this system is newer than the update you are applying" and that there is no need to install the update and it stops there.
Is there a workaround to this? How can I get Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 installed? I tried going to the Windows Update site, I already have everything installed and I even started the Windows Installer service manually. Has anyone else experienced this?
How can I get SQL Server 2005 Express installed if not how can I install SQL Server 2000 on tihs machine? The only reason I am trying to install SQL Server 2005 is because wanted to try it so I uninstalled SQL Server 2000 now I can no longer install SQL Server 2000 again because it won't let me because of the SP2 patch.
Help! :(

Hi All,
After I installed sql server 2005 64bit standard edition on Windows Server Enterprise 2008 64bit, I cannot connect to the sql instance using the sql management studio on the same machine!
I verified that:
service is running,
in surface area configuration: remote connections to local and remote are enabled, for TCP/IP and named pipes.
ran the command netstat -avn| findstr 49279 to make sure that the server is listening.
firewall is off, but this does not matter since I'm connecting locally to local instance
I'm using domain controller account to login to sql server / also tried the sa account.
what else can be wrong?
thanks.

When ever i try to access the report manager I get an error "Cannot access the remote server" even though the report server is on the local machine. I only have the web server role installed on the server. Im still quite a newbie at managing servers so please keep it as simple as possible.

says I need to service pack it right away, but before it gets started
it comes up with the error 'sqlcu.dll failed to load'. Anyone know
what this is all about?
Any ideas?
Any help would be appreciated.

I would like to ask you all a few questions. Please kindly inform me the related links if this topic is already brought before.
Is SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition compatible with Windows Server 2008? Can it run well there?
If not, what do I need in order to install it on my server?
Thank you so much for your kind attention and look forward to hearing from you all soon.

Hello:
I just installed Windows Server 2008. The installation also included Web Server.
When I tried to install SQL Server, I got the following warning:
IIS Feature Requirement (Warning)
Messag
IIS Feature Requirement
Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) is either not installed or is disabled. IIS is required by some SQL Server features. Without IIS, some SQL Server features will not be available for installation. To install all SQL Server features, install IIS from Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel or enable the IIS service through the Control Panel if it is already installed, and then run SQL Server Setup again. For a list of features that depend on IIS, see Features Supported by Editions of SQL Server in Books Online.
Can somebody advise me on how I can resolve this warning? Would running SP2 take care of this?

I'm unable to successfully install SQL 2005 on Windows Server 2003. Everything installs correctly except 'SQLXML4', and after installation, there's no Management Studio, unless I then install SQL Express Management Studio.
Installation details: Successfully installs 'Native Client' and the 'Support Files'. The 'System Configuration Check' passes everything. Installed 'Database Services', 'Integration Services', 'Client Components' (except for the 2 development tools), and 'Books Online'. Created the default instance (there were no other instances). Set it to run as 'Local System'. Set only the 'SQL Server' service to start after setup. Specified 'Mixed Mode'.
Then the installation proceeds, and everything looks good until SQLXML4 fails. Soon after, a window pops up saying "Setup is preparing to continue with the installation". Nothing happens till I click 'OK', and then 'Workstation Components' shows as having failed. Then the installation finishes normally. However there's no Management Studio, except that I then installed the SQL Express Management Studio, which appears to work fine.
I tried uninstalling, and installing again, but got the same results.
How can I get this to install correctly?
Thank you.

I'm currently running Windows Vista x64 and SQL server 2005 on an HP laptop with a AMD Turion 64 processor. I've install all of the Windows Vista x64 update so far with no issues. However, I'm unable to install SQL server 2005 SP2 via Windows updates.
I was able to successfully download the service pack with no issues and it is currenly on my machine ready to install. The system does take a check prior to the install process beginning to perform the install.
I continuely get and "Error Code A91" when the install process is running. As a result the install does not complete successfully. When I used the "Get Help" option I get a list of possible error conditions but none of them seem be useful. I checked each one and none of them provide any help with a solution.
I've successful installed SP2 on Vista x32 system with no problem. Is this a "Windows Update" issue?
Thanks

Hi,
We have just created a new Windows 2008 server running SQL 2005 64 bit. I am in the process of migrating old SQL 2000 databases onto this new server. One of the databases required a SQL login for some Windows groups that get created from the SMS software. I'm having a problem when I go into create a new login, select object type Groups, from this location , I enter the object name and click Check Names and it finds it. I select okay and everything looks good. But when I click ok on the New Login screen, I get the 15401 error saying that Windows NT user or group not found. I have gone into the Server Manager - Groups and verified that the group exists, and it does. The only thing I see when I click properties is on the bottom right had side of the screen it says "Changes to a user's group membership are not effective until the next time the user logs on." It says this for all the groups on this server and I get the same error message when I try to add any group. I have had the user that is a memeber of this group log off and back on a few times, but it still says the same thing and I still get the same error.
Anyone have any ideas on what the problem might be? Is there something on the Windows 2008 server setup that we missed?
Thanks,
Isabelle

When I try to install SQL Server 2005 Expess SP2 with Advanced Services on a clean Windows XP system that has had Service Pack 3 applied I get the error "Setup is missing prerequisites: - MSXML6" when it starts to install SQL Server Management Studio Express. This is despite the fact that earlier in the installation is says it installed MSXML6, and my understanding is that MSXML6 is part of Windows XP Service Pack 3 anyway.
The SQL Express installation stops installing components at this point. The database server itself does seem to be operational.
Is there anything I can do to work around this? I would like our customers to be able to install and use Management Studio Express.

I originally posted this on the SQL Server Setup and Upgrade forum, but then I found this forum and though it might be more appropriate...

Hi,
I have a Windows 2008 server 64-bit SP1 and I have installed SQL 2005 SP2 Enterprise Edition 64-bit. My current version is 9.00.3042.00. I am trying to configure Reporting Services and I am having lots of trouble getting the Application Pools to work properly. I have followed the Microsoft Technet paper 839480 "How to Install and Configure Reporting Services on Windows Server 2008". In the "Configure Reporting Services" part, I have successfully configured everything (all arrows are green) and have the following setup:
Report Server Virtual dir: ReportServer Default Web Site
Report Manager Virtual dir: Reports Defualt Web Site
Windows Service Identity: ReportServer with a service acct login
Web Service Identity:
Report Server: ReportServer,
Report Manager: DefaultAppPool (I get an error when I try to configure it to anything else: ReportServicesConfigUI.WMIProvider.WMIProviderException: An unknown error has occurred in the WMI Provider. Error Code 800708AC at ReportServicesConfigUI.WMIProvider.RSReportServerAdmin.SetWebServiceIdentity(String applicationPool)
The one thing I notice in the SQL Server configuration manager is that there is a red dot next to the SQL Reporting Services services even though the green arrow is there to show it is running.
When I look in IIS7, I see the application pools Reports and ReportServer and they are both in Integrated mode. When I try to go to http://localhost/reportserver, it gives an error. It will work if I change both application pools to classic. But then when I try to go to http://localhost/reports, I get an error:
"REQUEST IS NOT AVAILABLE IN THIS CONTEXT".
I have read up on IIS7 and it says that:
"This error is due to a design change in the IIS7 Integrated pipeline that makes the request context unavailable in Application_Start event. When using the Classic mode (the only mode when running on previous versions of IIS), the request context used to be available, even though the Application_Start event has always been intended as a global and request-agnostic event in the application lifetime."
So, how do I configure these application pools to work using IIS7 with SQL 2005 Reporting Services on a Windows 2008 server? I have tried all kinds of different things based on what I am reading on the net and nothing is working. Anybody have any suggestions?
Thanks!
Isabelle

Hi
I have just take my system back to the factory defaults after some unsuccessful attempts to install 64 bit and 32 bit sql server on my notebook. I am looking to use either 32 or 64 bit (I have disks for both) and I would like to get a step by step guide that will help me through the process.
I tried an install of the 64 bit version, applied SP2, and it went smoothly but the report services browser didn't work. I tried to change some IIS settings but I didnt document what I changed so i was unable to undo the changes that i made when these didnt work.
I tried several combinations of things but then decided that a clean install on a clean system was the best option.
I need the SQL engine , reporting services, analysis services - and possibly integration services - i am not sure if i need notification services (dont know what it does anyway!)
I also have vs2005 - should i install that first or after sql server 2005 SP2?
Thanks
Doug

Hi everyone...
I'm facing a problem while installing the SQL Server 2005 Express on Windows 2000 Pro with SP4.
After finishing the downloading from Microsoft I start the installation and things seems to go ok but during Extracting Files step a message appears "SQL Server Setup unexpectedly failed. For more information, review the setup summary log file in %Program Files%Microsoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOGSummary.txt" and it terminates the installation.
I located the log file and open it but can't understand the problem..I copy the text and paste it here for anyone who can understand it.Please, it is very importand for me to work with SQL Server for my project. Any advice or information or anything else???
Thank you all,

Ok so here's what happened:
Installed Server 2008 (64bit)
Installed VS2008 (+SQL 2005 Express, by default)
I've always installed SQL 2005 Dev (including the SQL Management Studio) before installing VS. Now I am trying to install just the management studio on this machine without success.
I tried installing the SQL workstation tools package from the SQL 2005 DVD but the installer detects the tools installed by SQL express (osql, etc.., but no management studio GUI) and the installer refuses to install anything else. I also tried downloading the separate installer for SQL management studio but it doesn't like something also: first thing the installer does is display this mesage:
"Installation of this product failed because it is not supported on this operating system For more information on supported configurations, see the product documentation."
Any way to do this without having to reinstall VS?
Thanks.

The subject pretty much sums the problem up. I am trying to get a database installed on Server 2008 RC0. The public information says SQL 2005 SP2 should work, but I cannot get the base SQL 2005 installed in order to apply the service pack. When I run the installation, I immediately get an error when trying to install the pre-requisites. Specifically, the .NET 2.0 Framework errors with code 87, "invalid parameter".
I have found a couple references to this error code, but nothing to do with Server 2008 and RC0. I have tried using a directory with no spaces, and tried the EXE vs ISO installation, but they everything fails. I don't know if there is a way to bypass the .NET 2.0 Framework install - since it's already on the machine anyway.
Thanks in advance for any help!

I've just started getting this EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005) on machines using Windows 2000 sp4 connecting to SQLServer. This is crashing JVMs (multiple Sun versions and BEA also) in the Java VM frame (outside our code). This has just started recently - perhaps with the last set of patches? Has anyone else seen this or know what I could do to get more information? Could this be related to updates to named pipes?
Thanks!
