Can't Open Northwind's Database Diagrams Node In SQL MSE

Oct 25, 2006

Hi.
I'm very new to this so I apologise in advance for asking the blindibly obvious. I have installed SQL Express and SQL Server Management Studio Express and I have downloaded and attached the Northwind sample database. I can see and edit the data in the tables but when I try to open the Database Diagram node I get the following message:
Database diagram support objects cannot be installed because this database does not have a valid owner.  To continue, first use the Files page of the Database Properties dialog box or the ALTER AUTHORIZATION statement to set the database owner to a valid login, then add the database diagram support objects.
I have no idea what a valid logon would be. Can somebody help?
 Thanks

NORTHWIND Database Was Re-created From A Different Database:How Can I Change The Entry In Sysdatabases For Database 'NORTHWIND'?

Jan 14, 2008

Hi all,

From the http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb384469.aspx (Walkthrough: Creating Stored Procedures for the Northwind Customers Table, I copied the following sql code:

--UpdateSPforNWcustomersTable.sql--

USE NORTHWIND

GO

IF EXISTS (SELECT * FROM sysobjects WHERE name = 'SelectCustomers' AND user_name(uid) = 'dbo')

DROP PROCEDURE dbo.[SelectCustomers]

GO

CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.[SelectCustomers]

AS

SET NOCOUNT ON;

SELECT CustomerID, CompanyName, ContactName, ContactTitle, Address, City, Region, PostalCode, Country, Phone, Fax FROM dbo.Customers

GO

IF EXISTS (SELECT * FROM sysobjects WHERE name = 'InsertCustomers' AND user_name(uid) = 'dbo')

DROP PROCEDURE dbo.InsertCustomers

GO

CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.InsertCustomers

(

@CustomerID nchar(5),

@CompanyName nvarchar(40),

@ContactName nvarchar(30),

@ContactTitle nvarchar(30),

@Address nvarchar(60),

@City nvarchar(15),

@Region nvarchar(15),

@PostalCode nvarchar(10),

@Country nvarchar(15),

@Phone nvarchar(24),

@Fax nvarchar(24)

)

AS

SET NOCOUNT OFF;

INSERT INTO [dbo].[Customers] ([CustomerID], [CompanyName], [ContactName], [ContactTitle], [Address], [City], [Region], [PostalCode], [Country], [Phone], [Fax]) VALUES (@CustomerID, @CompanyName, @ContactName, @ContactTitle, @Address, @City, @Region, @PostalCode, @Country, @Phone, @Fax);

SELECT CustomerID, CompanyName, ContactName, ContactTitle, Address, City, Region, PostalCode, Country, Phone, Fax FROM Customers WHERE (CustomerID = @CustomerID)

GO

IF EXISTS (SELECT * FROM sysobjects WHERE name = 'UpdateCustomers' AND user_name(uid) = 'dbo')

DROP PROCEDURE dbo.UpdateCustomers

GO

CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.UpdateCustomers

(

@CustomerID nchar(5),

@CompanyName nvarchar(40),

@ContactName nvarchar(30),

@ContactTitle nvarchar(30),

@Address nvarchar(60),

@City nvarchar(15),

@Region nvarchar(15),

@PostalCode nvarchar(10),

@Country nvarchar(15),

@Phone nvarchar(24),

@Fax nvarchar(24),

@Original_CustomerID nchar(5)

)

AS

SET NOCOUNT OFF;

UPDATE [dbo].[Customers] SET [CustomerID] = @CustomerID, [CompanyName] = @CompanyName, [ContactName] = @ContactName, [ContactTitle] = @ContactTitle, [Address] = @Address, [City] = @City, [Region] = @Region, [PostalCode] = @PostalCode, [Country] = @Country, [Phone] = @Phone, [Fax] = @Fax WHERE (([CustomerID] = @Original_CustomerID));

SELECT CustomerID, CompanyName, ContactName, ContactTitle, Address, City, Region, PostalCode, Country, Phone, Fax FROM Customers WHERE (CustomerID = @CustomerID)

GO

====================================================================================
I executed the above code in my SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) and I got the following error messages:

Msg 911, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

Could not locate entry in sysdatabases for database 'NORTHWIND'. No entry found with that name.

Make sure that the name is entered correctly.

===============================================================================================================
I know I recreated the NORTHWIND Database from a different Database before and I did not do anything for the entry in sysdatabases. How can I change the entry in sysdatabases for database 'NORTHWIND' now? Please help and advise.

Thanks in advance,

Cannot Open Database &"northwind&" Requested By The

Feb 15, 2008

Hi there. Im new to working with SQL Servers, so please be patient. I recently downloaded some samples of connecting to SQL Servers using VB.net. Problem is I cannot connect to the server. I get an error "Cannot open database "northwind" requested by the login. The login failed"

I can connect to the database no problem using SQL Service Management Studios (SQL2005), so I think the problem lies either with the setup of the PC im using (security), or perhaps it cannot find the database. The code Im using is as follows

Dim DS As DataSet
Dim MyConnection As SqlConnection
Dim MyCommand As SqlDataAdapter
MyConnection = New SqlConnection("Trusted_Connection=yes;server=.sqlexpress;Integrated Security=SSPI;uid=sa;pwd=;database=northwind")
MyCommand = New SqlDataAdapter("select firstname as 'First Name', lastname as 'Last Name' Title from Employees", MyConnection)
DS = New DataSet("Employees")
MyCommand.Fill(DS) 'This is where the error occurs
grdEmployees.DataSource = DS
grdEmployees.DataBind()

I've been reading up on this problem for a week but with no luck.

PLEASE HELP !

Can't Open Northwind

Dec 8, 2005

Can't open Northwind - asp.net - dataaccess-sqldatasource

I remembered doing walkthrough using Northwind.  However it wasn't an http project but a file project using the development server.  Northwind allowed me to add, edit and insert, and the web page looked fine.
I opened a simple project just to see whether I could get my sqlserver on the internet. (vs studio 2005, sqlserver 2005)
I created the project in http location http://localhost/Northwind .  I dragged a sqldatasource to the page, configuring it to display ID and ProductName.  I clicked advanced, but noticed the generate insert, edit and delete were grayed out. That told me something was wrong with my authetification.
I configured my sqlserver 2005 to have integrated security.
I built the solution and website, then pressed cntl-F5.  I got a login error. Nowhere did the page ask me for username and password.  First questions - how do I get this to open up a web page, and how to I get it to allow me to generate insert, edit and delete statements?

Unable To Open MSDB Node

Dec 20, 2005

I'm sure there is a simple answer to this but it eludes me at the moment.

I€™m using the Developer Edition of SQL Server 2005.

The MSDB node under Integration Services->Stored Packages refuses to open.

It always fails with a login timeout message and that the connection was

actively refused.

I€™ve run the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration tool and allowed remote

and local access, even though it€™s all installed on the local machine. This

didn€™t help.

The next thing I did was to turn off all my firewalls and internet access

control software and it€™s still not working.

I€™m using integrated authentication and the user is part of the

administrators group,

any ideas how I can try and rectify this?

Thanks

Paul

I executed the Form_Kimmel.vb and I got no errors. But I did not get the new values insterted in the table "Custermers" of Northwind database. Please help and tell me what I did wrong and how to correct this problem.

Do you need to be a member of the dbo role or an sa on a particular sql server to create a database diagram? I just want to confirm this is the case.

Any assistance will be helpful.

DataBase Diagrams

Nov 29, 2007

In our organization, we are using SQL Server 2005 Management studio as the client interface to access all our enterprise Databases.Most of the databases are built on SQL 2005 DB Server.
However, We have one of the Database built on SQL Server 2000, which also has Database diagrams in it. Though We are able to view all the DB objects through SQL 2005 managment studio interface, but unable to view the diagrams.
I understand that, the binary data of the diagrams are stored in "dtproperties" table on SQL 2000 but in SQL 2005, it is stored in "sysobjects"(not sure) table and both are entirely different.

Following are my questions.
1.Since the DB is still on SQL 2000,How can we view the diagram objects thru the SQL 2005 Enterprise manager.

2.For the migration process of SQL 2000 to SQL 2005, How can i migrate the database diagrams.

Appreciate the responses.

Hello, I'm using C# express with SQL express.

I can create a database, create tables and I can even delete the database but I cannot create database digrams. I get an error that says I don't have a valid dbo user or permissions to impersonate. It asks me if I would like to impersonate but it just fails. Any Ideas? Thanks
