Can't Retrieve Data Through ODBC In Assembly (dll) Deployed On Server
Jun 14, 2007
Hi,
In SSRS 2005, I have an assembly(dll) which is included in a report in order to retrieve data ( OdbcConnection) from database as special condition while the runtime of report. This assembly works FINE in the preview of VS development tools. But it is NOT working when deploying to server, it ONLY returns default value instead of database's value.
Anyone knows how to solve it ? Many Many thanks

I have developed an application in C#, and it uses both a SQL server database, and as part of its operation it opens up a Foxpro database. I am using Odbc to connect to the fox pro database and everything wortks just fine on my devleopment machine. However when I deploy my application I am getting the following error text when ever I create the form that does the Odbc work.
************** Exception Text **************
System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.Data.Odbc, Version=1.0.3300.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.
File name: 'Microsoft.Data.Odbc, Version=1.0.3300.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089'
I have absolutely no clue why I am getting this error. I have insured that the latest MDAC was installed ( it is XP Pro so no updates there ) I have made sure that I have the latest Fox Pro Odbc driver installed as well and I can create the DSN just fine.
Can anyone point me where to look next ? Im truly stumped here.
Thanks in advance for any and all input!!!

I am developing an ETL system on a 32-bit machine let's say, called 'dwdev'. The application connects to a Sybase database as a source system using ODBC connection. I am able to run this application directly from Visual studio 2005 and i am able to deploy it into SQL Server 2005 and run it from Server as a job. Both work. At this server i am connecting to a SQL Server instance called 'dwdev'.
When i transfer my application onto a 64-bit machine, let's say called 'dwtest', i am able to run my application from Visual Studio 2005 properly and it works, but when i deploy it into SQL Server (instance is called 'dwtest') and try to run it as a job just like the development machine, it gives an error and stops executing.
I was facing 'data source' type of error when i was first trying it from Visual Studio, but i solved this problem by setting Run64bitRunTime settings to FALSE on the Project's properties Debugging Page, at 64-bit machine. now it uses 32-bit runtime then 32-bit Sybase ODBC driver. But i cannot force the application to use 32 bit runtime when i am executing it from SQL Server as a job.
How can i do that? is there an alternative method?
Thanks for your help...

I am trying to get a function I created in VB 5 for Access and Excel to work in SQL 2005. I was able to update the old VB code to work in VB 2005. I compiled and made a .dll, and I was able to register the new Assembly in SQL Server. When I try to create the Function, I get an error:
CREATE FUNCTION dbo.Temperature(@FluidName char, @InpCode Char, @Units Char, @Prop1 varchar, @Prop2 varChar)
RETURNS VarChar
AS EXTERNAL NAME FluidProps.[FluidProps.FluidProperties.Fluids].Temperature
Error returned:
Msg 6573, Level 16, State 1, Procedure Temperature, Line 21
Method, property or field 'Temperature' of class 'FluidProps.FluidProperties.Fluids' in assembly 'FluidProps' is not static.
Here is the code (part of it) in the VB class:
Header:
Imports Microsoft.SqlServer.Server
Imports System.Data.SqlClient
Imports System.Runtime.InteropServices
Imports System.Security
Imports System.Security.Permissions
Namespace FluidProperties
'Option Strict Off
'Option Explicit On
Public Partial Class Fluids
Function:
Function Temperature(ByRef FluidName As Object, ByRef InpCode As Object, ByRef Units As Object, ByRef Prop1 As Object, Optional ByRef Prop2 As Object = Nothing) As Object
Call CalcProp(FluidName, InpCode, Units, Prop1, Prop2)
Temperature = ConvertUnits("-T", Units, T, 0)
End Function
If I change the Function Temperature to Static, I get an error that functions cannot be Static. Its been a long time since I created the code and am having a hard time in my older age of getting the cobwebs out to make it work.
I have no problem getting the function to work if I call it from a VB form....so what do I need to do to get it to work on data in my SQL server?
Thanks

I work with February CTP of SqlServer 2008.
I have an Assembly with several UDTs inside. Version of assembly is 1.0.*
I use CREATE ASSEMBLY statement to register this assembly, and it runs without any errors. Then I rebuild CLR solution without doing any changes in source code. In that case the only difference between new and old assemblies is version (difference in fourth part of version).
Then I try to update assembly in SqlServer. I use
ALTER ASSEMBLY <name>
FROM <path>
WITH PERMISSION_SET = UNSAFE, UNCHECKED DATA
statement for this. Statement runs with error:
Msg 6509An error occurred while gathering metadata from assembly €˜<Assembly name>€™ with HRESULT 0x1.
I found the list of condition for ALTER ASSEMBLY in MSDN:
ALTER ASSEMBLY statement cannot be used to change the following:
· The signatures of CLR functions, aggregate functions, stored procedures, and triggers in an instance of SQL Server that reference the assembly. ALTER ASSEMBLY fails when SQL Server cannot rebind .NET Framework database objects in SQL Server with the new version of the assembly.
· The signatures of methods in the assembly that are called from other assemblies.
· The list of assemblies that depend on the assembly, as referenced in the DependentList property of the assembly.
· The indexability of a method, unless there are no indexes or persisted computed columns depending on that method, either directly or indirectly.
· The FillRow method name attribute for CLR table-valued functions.
· The Accumulate and Terminate method signature for user-defined aggregates.
· System assemblies.
· Assembly ownership. Use ALTER AUTHORIZATION (Transact-SQL) instead.
Additionally, for assemblies that implement user-defined types, ALTER ASSEMBLY can be used for making only the following changes:
· Modifying public methods of the user-defined type class, as long as signatures or attributes are not changed.
· Adding new public methods.
· Modifying private methods in any way.
But I haven€™t done any changes in source code, so new version of assembly satisfies all this conditions.
What could be the reason for such behavior?
P.S. I€™ve got the same error, if I add or change any method in assembly before rebuilding.

Last night I face performace problems in web site. I got like 100 000 users and site fails because of sql-connections.
Currently I'm making a new connection for every query, and my code looks like this:Public Shared Function executeQueryReturnDataset(ByVal strsql As String) As DataSet
Dim sqlConnection As New SqlConnection(Connstr)
Dim sqlCommand As New SqlCommand(strsql, sqlConnection)
Dim sqlDataSet As New DataSet
Try
sqlConnection.Open()
Dim myDataAdapter As New SqlDataAdapter
myDataAdapter.SelectCommand = sqlCommand
myDataAdapter.Fill(sqlDataSet)
Catch e As Exception
Console.Write(e.ToString())
Finally
sqlConnection.Close()
End Try
Return sqlDataSet
End Function I was wondering would it be better to save an instance from connection object to memory and use that same connection for all querys?

I am developing a commercial solution for scheduling problems, using different databases. Several of our clients don't have a database server installed in their systems networks, so we thought we would simply use SQL Server Express as a no-cost solution. However, I have come across a MAJOR difficulty:
When I try to log on using SQL Server Authentication (for example, name: "sa" pass: "sa") instead of Windows Authentication, I am simply unable to view any data that does not come directly from a table! No data from queries(!), no data from stored procedures(!!), no data from functions(!!!), only from tables!!!!
And it's not like the queries don't return a dataset, because they do, for a user logged on using Windows Authentication!
And this is not 'simply' a problem of remotely connecting to SQL Server Express, this is also true locally!
There is nothing wrong with my own system, this problem occurs on at least four different windows platforms, vista included. And it is not related to our program, I am having the same difficulty with the Management Studio Express.
I have tried to use several different users, each with different permissions and roles, to no avail.
This is truly a frustrating problem.
It can be solved in one of two ways:
1. Get a non-windows-authenticated user to see the data (get more than 0 rows in the dataset).
2. Manage to log on remotely using Windows authentication.
I am unable to do either one of those, and not for lack of trying. I have been at this for the past week without results.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, Can anyone HELP?!?!?!?

Hello,
I need to retrieve data from a SQL-server table using a stored procedure. I want to retrieve the values from the table and add them to labels on a form. What is the easiest way to do this? Is dataset the solution?
I appreciate any help!
string sCN = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["ConnectionString"].ConnectionString;
SqlConnection sqlConnection2 = new SqlConnection(sCN);
SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand();
cmd.CommandType = System.Data.CommandType.Text;
cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@userID", userID);
Int32 rowsAffected;
cmd.CommandText = "get_user"; //Stored procedure to get user data. Takes UserID as parameter
cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
cmd.Connection = sqlConnection2;
sqlConnection2.Open();
rowsAffected = cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();
sqlConnection2.Close();

The project I'm currently working on involves combining data from one SQL Server 2000 databases and XML returned from a web service into a 3rd SQL Server 2000 database.
This process must be scheduled to happen once a day. If it weren't for the Web Service, I'd say that this is a no-brainer and I'd use DTS. However, I'm not sure if I can even access a Web Service with DTS. Has anyone done this or have any tips?

Hi all, I hope this is a simple issue that I'm overlooking something or have contradicting permissions set somewhere. I have a fairly basic site with a subfolder containing an aspx page. The user logs in to gain access to the subfolder. That part works fine.On another page(also within a subfolder in the subfolder), they can post form data to a database (SQL Server 2000) which exists on a different server than my web server. This page opens fine, but when submitting the data (only one value to one field for my testing purposes), it bombs and returns the error "Login failed for user"...In my connection string I've specified the username and password which I assigned to the db in Enterprise Manager (not sa, btw). I've also tried letting IIS control the UID/PW, and even specified no UID/PW in either the connection string or the db. Anonymous access enabled in IIS for this virtual directory also returns the error. (?)I should mention that in Visual Studio, the connection string was automatically set to my local development machine's workstation ID. I removed that and have tried replacing it with the server name, blank, etc.(in notepad) - to no avail. dll's are in their proper places, etc. The only thing not working is the database connection.Using: IIS v6, SQL Server 2000, and Visual Studio.NET 2003 (1.1 framework)Anyway - any suggestions? There are so many places to enable/disable permissions, it's getting confusing. I hope it's something I'm overlooking and not a problem with our SQL installation...Thanks!--Donnie

Hi,
I am using Reporting Services in the following way. The application implements a three tier Architecture viz Web Server, Application Server and Database Server. Reporting Services 2005 is installed on the Database Server.
The application uses ReportViewer Control which is part of an ASPX page deployed on the Web Server. For ReportViewer Control to fetch data from Reporting Services using RS API, we have to set ReportServerUrl and Report Path. In this scenario, the web server cannot communicate to the database server directly. The web server is in the DMZ and it can only communicate with the Application Server which is in a separate Network.
How can I use Report Viewer Control to fetch data from Reporting Services which is on the Database Server.
Thanks & Regards,
Rajiv

I previously had an ASP.NET 1.1 site running on my IIS 6.0 server (not the default website) with Reporting Services running in a subdirectory of that website. I recently upgraded to ASP.NET 2.0 for my website and was greeted with an error when trying to view a report. The error was very non-descript, but when I checked the server logs, it recorded the details as "It is not possible to run two different versions of ASP.NET in the same IIS process. Please use the IIS Administration Tool to reconfigure your server to run the application in a separate process."
First of all, I could not figure out where and how to do this. Secondly, I decided to try to also change the Reporting Services folders to run ASP.NET 2.0 and when I did, I was greeted with the following message when attempting to view a report:
"Failed to load expression host assembly. Details: StrongName cannot have an empty string for the assembly name."
Please help.

Hi
I am a bit paranoid about what I just did to my SQL Server 2005 with this CLR experiment.
I created a Class Lib in C# called inLineLib that has a class Queue which represents an object with an ID field.
in another separate namespace called inLineCLRsql, I created a class called test which will hold the function to be accessed from DB, I referenced and created an instances of the Queue class, and retrieve it's ID in a function called PrintMessage.
namespace inlineCLRsql{
public static class test{
public static void PrintMessage(){
inLineLib.Queue q = new inLineLib.Queue();
int i = q.queueId ;
Microsoft.SqlServer.Server.SqlContext.Pipe.Send(i.ToString());
}
}
}
to access this from the db, I attempted to create an assembley referencing inLineCLRsql.dll. This didn't work as it complained about inLineLib assembly not existing in the db. I then attempted to create an assembley for inLineLib but it barfed saying System.Management assembly not created.
so what I did is (and this is where I need to know if I just ruined sql server or not):
1- ALTER DATABASE myDB SET TRUSTWORTHY ON;.
2- CREATE ASSEMBLY SystemManagement
FROM 'C:WINDOWSMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727System.Management.dll'
WITH PERMISSION_SET = UNSAFE
3- CREATE ASSEMBLY inLineLibMaster
FROM 'D:inLineServerinLineLibinDebuginLineLib.dll'
WITH PERMISSION_SET = unsafe
4- and finally
CREATE ASSEMBLY inLineLib
FROM 'D:inLineServerCLRSQLinlineCLRsqlinDebuginlineCLRsql.dll'
WITH PERMISSION_SET = SAFE
Everything works after those steps (which took some trial and error). I can create a sproc like:
CREATE PROC sp_test AS
EXTERNAL NAME inLineLib.[inlineCLRsql.test].PrintMessage
and it returns the Queue ID
Is there anything unadvisable about the steps above?
Thanks for your help

Today we installed our ASP.NET Application on a 64-bit server for the first time. We got the error 'Unable to find entry point named 'InterlockedIncrement' in DLL 'kernel32.dll''.
This error comes when we make a database query using Microsoft.Data.Odbc. I think it does not run on 64-bit machines.

I am running Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, and I am having difficulties setting up an ODBC User Data Source to connect to the SQL server.
I have tried going through "Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Data Sources (ODBC)" to add a user data source. For the SQL Server to connect to, I have tried specifying "localhostSQLEXPRESS", "SQLEXPRESS", "(local)", etc. -- but nothing seems to work. When the DSN configuration wizard tries to connect to the SQL Server to obtain default settings, it fails with the error "SQL Server does not exist or access denied". (Same error occurs if I try connecting to this ODBC data source later.)
But I know that the SQL Server exists and I have been using it through the SQL Server data provider in another application.
I am new to this, so any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

We have more than 10 databases on the same server. When I try to set up ODBC connection through my desktop to a specific database (DB1) using SQL authentication, it acts weird:
-- I give the login (testkz) access to DB1, DB1 does not show up in the default database list; I tried to type in the database name, it is not taken
-- If I give 'testkz' access to two other databases (and only these two), even though I did not give access to DB1, DB1 together with some other databases show up on the default database list. Seems to me that there are some dependency among the dbs.
Does anybody have any issues like this?
Your input is appreciated.

HiI've got an Ingres database of some 200 tables which I need to importevery night into SQL Server 2005 for use by Reporting Services. Mostof the tables will come across unchanged (a few need massaging tohandle time intervals correctly), but the Import Wizard only seems towant to import one table (or more accurately query) at a time. I seemto remember the old 2000 Import Wizard handled multiple tables - isthere any way of processing multiple tables in 2005, or must I resignmyself to writing 200 import packages in SSIS.Chloe CrowderThe British Library

Hi,
I am trying to import tables from an ODBC data source into an SQL Server 2005 database. I presume that one way to achieve this is to create an Integration Services package, via Business Intelligence Studio (I already used DTS in SQL Server 2000, but not Integration Services) ?
Or is there a simpler way ? For instance, is there an import wizard that woult include an ODBC Data source ?
Thanks i advance.

Hi guys,
When I thought everything is okay with this script, I got a new problem...
I have a VBA's script from Excel 2003 that builds sql script and retrieves data from SQL SERVER 2000.
in order to make the sql running, I need to use a multi - batch processing, to pass and execute every command line once a time.
Up to here, I am using a test case with Account number = '123456' and getting the desire results.
The code below is running okay with the test case, but when changing the account number (mark as yellow in the code) to include all the accounts (or just one other account), I am getting the following ERROR:
run - time error '-2147217871 (80040e31)' - [Microsoft] [ODBC SQL Server Driver] time out expired.
Now, if I take the same code, with the condition that generates the ERROR, and try it into SQL Server, I get the results without errors.
Thanks in advance,
Aldo.

I wantto use the odbc driver but when I define it as the destination, i geterrors saying that the maximum number of rows failed has exceeded theminimum.Does anybody know what to do in order to get the transfer workingusing ibm db2 odbc as the datasource?ThanksLyn

We have written a test CRL stored procedure to test replacing one of our complex stored procedures but can€™t get it deployed to our SQL server that hosts a mirrored configuration of our production database (very locked down). It works fine on our development instances (not very locked down). It only references the default assemblies that were added when we created the project. All it does is use Context Connection=true to get data, loops though some records and returns the data using SQLContext. CLR is enabled on SQL server, the assembly is strongly signed, and we tried deploy using the binary string with the SAFE setting.
CREATE ASSEMBLY for assembly 'SQLCLRTest2' failed because assembly 'SQLCLRTest2' failed verification. Check if the referenced assemblies are up-to-date and trusted (for external_access or unsafe) to execute in the database. CLR Verifier error messages if any will follow this message
[ : SQLCLRTest2.StoredProcedures::GetLift][mdToken=0x600001e] Type load failed.
[token 0x02000008] Type load failed.
