Can't See Package List In SQL Agent Job Step

Apr 11, 2008

I am getting an error when I try to create a Step in a SQL Agent Job and select the Type "SQL Server Integration Services Package". As soon as I select this type in the drop down box, I get the error message:

The specified module could not be found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E) (SqlManagerUI)

It then takes me back to the Step window, but I do not get the option to select packages.

I was able to do this in the past, and I do have jobs set up to run packages, so this may be something related to "permissions" or recent upgrades. I am a sysadmin on the SQL Server, but I have limited rights on the Windows server (I'm not a Network admin). OR, could this be related to recent service packs or windows upgrades?

Any help appreciated.

SSIS Package Step Errors And Logs From SQL Job Agent?

Mar 28, 2007

I've deployed an ssis package to the database server through the manifest file over the network..

The package runs great when testing through vs.net on my client.

I've added the package to a job step in the sql server job agent.

When I test the new job, the package step fails, but there is no error or log information in the job history.

Wwhere can I get error information? And/or How can make SSIS error information more verbose in the job history?

Thanks for any help or information.

SQL 2012 :: SSIS Package From File System Run As Agent From Job Step On Secondary Node

Sep 23, 2014

I have created a Test SSIS Package within BIDS (VS 2K8, v 9.0.30729.4462 QFE; .NET v 3.5 SP1) that connects to our Test Listener.

There is only 1 Connection Manager Object, and OLE DB Provider for SQL Server.

The ConnectionString lists: Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Integrated Security=SSPI

The Test Connection within BIDS works.

The Package Control Flow has just 1 Object, and Execute SQL Task that performs an Exec on an SP that contains only a Select (Read).

The Package runs within BIDS.

I've placed this Package within a Job on the Primary Node. Ive run the job successfully using 32 bit runtime on and off. The location of the file on the server happens to be on a share that resides on what is currently the Secondary Node.

When I try to run the exact copy of this Job on the Secondary Node (Which has been Set up for Read All Connections; Yes), I get an error, regardless of the 32 bit runtime opiton. At this point, the location of the file is on the Secondary Node.

The Error is: "Login failed for user 'OurDomainAgent_Account'".

The Agent is a member of NT ServiceSQLServerAgent on both instances, and that account is a member of SysAdmin. Adding the Agent account as well, and giving that account SysAdmin, makes no difference either.

Why can't I get this to work?

SQL Server Agent Job Step Fails When Creating A SQL Server Integration Serveices Type Of Step

Hi

I posted this on the sql server security forums too. Here is the error that i get when i change the type of the step to ssis

Failed to retrieve data for this request. (Microsoft.SqlServer.SmoEnum)

This error pops up right after i change the type of the step to "SQL Server Intergration Services Package"

I have made the following configurations:

The user group (windows group) that the user belongs has the following roles in msdb :

db_dtsadmin
db_dtsltuser
db_dtsoperator
SQLAgentOperatorRole
SQLAgentReaderRole
SQLAgentUserRole

i have made a proxy to sql server agent which has the following subsystems :

"SQL Server Integration Services Provider" the proxy is tied to the same login which has those SQLagent and dts roles in msdb database.

Im using windows authentication and the user that logs into the sql server is in the same group that i have set all of the rights.

Ps. Clearly im missing some role or right somewhere because as soon as i give the group sysadmin role then all the users in that group can create SSIS steps in the agent.

Ps. Ps. I have been living under the impression that i dont have to give sysadmin rights to people that create ssis packages and schedule then with the agent.

Execute Package Results Different To Step By Step Execution - Uses Raw File

Jan 31, 2007

I have a package that has multiple data flow tasks. At the end of a task, key data is written into a raw file (file name stored in a variable) that is used as a data source for the next task. Each task requires a success from the preceding task.

Here's the rub:

If I execute the entire package, the results of the package (number of records of certain tasks) differs significantly from when I execute each step in the package in turn (many more records e.g. 5 vs 350).

I get the feeling that the Raw file is read into memory before it is flushed by the previous task, or that the next task begins preparation tasks too early.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am running on Server 2003 64 (although the same thing happens when deployed on a Server 2003 32 machine)

Thanks

SQL Sever Agent Job Step !!

Mar 2, 2008

Hi pals,

I have stored procedure which dynamically creates a job with 3 job steps which will eventually runs 3 SSIS packages in a sequence.
But i dont know why it is skipping the 2nd step and executing the 3rd step.
I can clearly observe it in the logs.

And if comment the 3rd step and re-run the job, now it is executing the 1st and 2nd step in a sequence.
I can see the log for 2nd package also.
Again i uncommented the code for calling the 3rd step which loads data into Oracle tables.
This time again it is skipping the 2nd step.
I dont know the reason why it is happening so.
It is really frustrating me a lot.
IS there any precedence/ priority given while loading data into Oracle database?

Job steps
First step loads data from staging database to ODS
Second step loads data from ODS to DataMart
Third step loads data from DataMart to Oracle Tables

Can anyone please help me out.

I have tried all options.

Here is my stored procedure.
Is anything wrong in the below stored procedure.

CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[spExecDTSPackage]
as
declare @jid uniqueidentifier
declare @cmd1 varchar(4000)
declare @cmd2 varchar(4000)
declare @cmd3 varchar(4000)

@proxy_name= N'Proxyname',
@command= @cmd3

-- Start job
exec msdb.dbo.sp_start_job
@job_id = @jid,
@step_name= N'step1'

I have also tried out with an simple example , a job with 3 steps which basically inserts 3 recs into a table.

Here is the code and this one is executing fine.
I dont why the above code is not Functioning properly.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Differences In SSIS File Locations In SQL Server Agent Step

Jun 22, 2007

When adding an SSIS step to a SQL Server Agent job, when selecting the location of a config file, the dialog lets you select from the database server you're working with. If selecting the location of the package itself (when the source is File System), the dialog lets you select from the machine where Management Studio is sitting instead of from the database server. Is that intentional? And if so, why? Should I just use a fully qualified file name for the package location rather than one using a drive letter?

SQL Server Agent Job Step Properties Window Loses Property Values Containing Semicolon (;)

May 16, 2007

Here's a weird one:

We are setting up a job for the SQL Server Agent via SSMS. The Job Step Type is SSIS.

In the Job Step Properties window, on the Set values tab, you can enter Values to override your package variables - normally all well and good.

However in this particular case, the variable Value contains semicolons ( - it is a Connection String for an ODBC driver. Eg: Driver={Client Access ODBC Driver (32-bit)};system=MYSERVER;...

The behaviour for this Value is weird:

If the Value is not surrounded with double quotes ("), the job fails with "The command line parameters are invalid."
If the Value is surrounded with double quotes ("), the job will run as intended. The catch is: that entry and any subsequent "Set Values" entries disappear next time the Job Step Properties window is opened.

This looks like a bug with the parsing of those strings by the Job Step Properties window?

Or am I missing something?

Retrieving A Step Name Of A DTS Package

Aug 22, 2002

I trying to right some custom error handeling activex controls inside a DTS Package. The only problem is i need the specific name of the step that it is checking. The easiest way I found was to save the package to Meta Data Services and then look at the properties. The only problem with that is it doesnt specify what is what. its more or less a guess. and if the package is huge or has been through multiple revisions, it makes it even harder. anyone that could lend an hand? i though for sure i might be able to pull it from one of the sys tables in msdb, but there isnt anything for the individual steps, only the packages. Thanks in advance.

DTS Execute Package Task Step Precedence Bug

Jun 18, 2002

This is a bug that I submitted to Microsoft. I wanted to see if anyone could assist me with a work-around.

1. Create a new DTS Package
2. Add an ActiveX Task and change 'Main = DTSTaskExecResult_Success' to 'Main = DTSTaskExecResult_Failure'.
3. Running this package will result in a Failed package.
4. Save Package as 'Failure' to local server

5. Create another new DTS Package.
6. Add an 'Execute Package' task, and configure the properties to have it launch the saved 'Failure' child package.
7. Add an ActiveX task and then click ok to close it.
8. Select the Execute Package task (which executes the failure package), hold control and click the ActiveX task. Add an 'On Success' Precendence constraint from the 'Workflow' menu.

9. Now execute the package. Notice that the ActiveX task will execute even though the Execute Package task FAILED.

10. If you change the Precendence constraint from 'On Success' to 'On Failure' the ActiveX task will not run, because the package thinks that the Execute Package task completed with success.

In summary... if a child package, executed by an Execute Package task fails, the Execute Package Task ALWAYS "reports" success to the following precedence constraint and the package continues to run. Even if 'Fail Package on first error' is enabled. Although you will see that the task actually failed while watching the status of the package execution.

I am currently trying to write vbscript in an ActiveX task that will follow an Execute Package Task. I am trying to make the vbscript check and see if the previous task really did succeed or fail, and then make the ActiveX task succeed or fail as required to make the precedence constraints work properly.

I have replicated this problem on many different machines.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Any ideas for my ActiveX task? I am trying to access the StepExecutionResult from the Execute Package task, and I have been unable to. If I can get the Step Execution reult, then I can in turn cause the ActiveX task to suceed or fail, based on the execution result of the Execute Package task.

Thank you for your time,

David Zebrowitz

SSIS Package Doesn't Execute As A Job Step

May 3, 2006

I have this SSIS package which just doesn't seem to run when executing as a sql job and I keep getting this error:

"The command line parameters are invalid. The step failed."

I read some of the comments in forums and they were suggesting to verify the command line for the sql job since there is known bug in the command line for sql job.

But that didn't seem to resolve it and the reason could be one of the variable values that I am trying to set.

In this package one of the variables that I am trying to set is the connection string and my command line looks like this

dtexec /SQL "TestPkg" /SERVER [SVRNAME] /MAXCONCURRENT "-1" /CHECKPOINTING OFF
/SET " package.variables[User::MetaDataConnectionString].Value";"Data Source=[SVRNAME];Initial Catalog=[DBNAME];Integrated Security=True;"

When I try to run this from the command line I get the error as:

Argument " package.variables[User::MetaDataConnectionString].Value;Data Source=[SVRNAME];Initial Catalog=[DBNAME];Integrated Security=True;""
for option "set" is not valid.

I think the issue is in the set parameter where it seems to be intepreting the ;'s in the connection string as part of its command (which I seem to be escaping by putting them in quotes but it seems to be stripping them off)

Has anyone else encountered this issue? Is there any other escape character that I should be using?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

How To Execute A Single Step In A SSIS Package?

Mar 17, 2007

Hi all,

I am new to SQL Server 2005 (but many years in SQL Server and .NET), and I am sort of having everything figured out for my company. However, one thing that still bothering me is that:

In the old Server 2000, you can execute a single step in a DTS package by right click the step and then click execute step.

In the new server 2005, I can only execute the whole package from the Management Tool and Edit the pack from VS 2005. Is there also a way for me to execute a single step in a SSIS package?

This is important for us, many thanks!

SQL 2012 :: Agent Job History Shows Step Still Running But Shows Start And End Times?

Jul 1, 2015

I have a SQL Agent job that runs at 4:15 in the morning. The job has 5 steps, each step only runs if the preceding step succeeds. The second step, which calls an SSIS package that does the main processing, appears to finish as it goes on to the next step; however, when looking in 'View History' there are 2 entries for this step - the first one shows it as still running (Circled Green Arrow) but with a start and end time. The second entry says the job succeeded.

I have been seeing conflicts, such as deadlocks, with later jobs. I suspect this job is causing the conflicts - maybe the package is still running in the background instead of having actually completed?

what conditions a job step my be showing in the job history as both running AND completed successfully?

Run Package On Server CPU Is Done Through SQL Agent: How To Set User Variable In Package Then?

May 9, 2007

Hi,

I have packages stored in SQL store. I was letting users run the packages from a .net app that I made with

Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime

Now I have noticed this causes the packages to run on the client pc cpu, as well as the network traffic is done via the client pc, in my particular case this is slow.

From the doc and in this forum I have found that you can run a package on the Server cpu through sql agent, let packages be run in a sql job. after that you can start a package from an application with the SQL sp_start_job .

But How do you set a user::varibale in a package if you have to start the package from a sql agent job ?

Programmatically Setting Package Variables In Job Step Command Line

Mar 1, 2007

We are trying to start a server job running an SSIS package and supply some parameters to the package when we start the job using SMO.

What we have now is this:

string cmdLine = job.JobSteps[0].Command;

cmdLine += @" /SET PackageGetGroupRatingYear_Id.Variables[User::RatingId].Value;1";

cmdLine += @" /SET PackageGetGroupRatingYear_Id.Variables[User::GroupId].Value;1";

cmdLine += " /SET \Package.Variables[User::period].Value;"" + periodEndDate + """;

job.JobSteps[0].Command = cmdLine;

job.Start();

It appears that when the job is run, the modified command line is not used.

What is needed to supply runtime parameters to a job step when starting the job via SMO?

Thanks,

Step-by-step Deployment Of Single-user Database App?

Mar 2, 2008

Hi!

I hope the answer is as simple as the question -- but after reading all the documentation I could find (understand?) and a lot of posts here, I'm no closer to achieving the goal.

I have a Visual C# app, DAYTRACKER, developed in VS2005. It uses a database with several tables constructed using SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition.

I want to deploy the app plus the database plus SQL Express to another machine, to be used by a single user (the administrator) with no need for network connectivity of any kind.

What I have so far is:
1. The application is successfully deployed from a CD-ROM, having used the Publish process within VS2005, and opens on the new machine -- without database connectivity, however.
2. SQL Express is successfully deployed (it deployed as a 'prerequisite' when I went through the Publish process in VS2005)
3. I manually copied the database's .mdf and .mdl files, using SQL Server Managers 'Copy Database' function, then transferred the copies to the new machine into the ..MSSQL.1MSSQLdata folder (where they appear along with the master.mdg, mastlog.ldf etc files)

Now, the DAYTRACKER application's DAYTRACKERConnectionString under 'Settings' in the VS2005 studio reads 'Data Source=DELL3;Initial Catalog=DayTracker;Integrated Security=True' (which are the appropriate parameters for the machine, DELL3, on which I wrote the program.)

The problem, of course, is that SQL Express on the new machine doesn't connect the application to the database. When I go to the 'SQL Server Configuration Manager' and go to the 'SQL Server 2005 Services' and double-click on the 'SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS)' icon (the service is running) and the user is logged on using 'Local System Account'. Under the 'Service' tab the Host Name is 'MUSIC' (which is the name of the new machine I've installed the app onto -- which of course is not the name - DELL3 - that the app's connection string is expecting). Under the 'Advanced' tab, I've tried correcting the name of the Startup Parameters default .mdf and .mdl entries to ..DayTracker.mdf and ..DayTracker_log.mdl, but the server won't start up after I make the changes.

What I'm hoping for: a step-by-step way of doing this type of deployment, preferable getting it all onto one CD-ROM, and installing it on the new machine so that it all works seamlessly from the start, not requiring any 'tweaking' of the SQLServer Express settings by the end-user.

But I'll take pretty much anything that fixes the specific db connectivity problem I've described.

Thank you very much.

How To Read An Database Table Step By Step (with ADO)

May 19, 2008

Hi,
I have to transport a big database table and can't read it at once with "select * from table" because the table is bigger than my system memory.
Is there a way to read the table step by step? I thought it was possible with ADO and his serverside cursors but I don't now how. I need an "universal" solution that works on SQL Server 2000/2005, MySQL and Oracle.

Regards,
harry

Enabling T-SQL Debugger (SQL2000) - Step Into, Step Over Etc

Dec 5, 2007

Connecting to a networked SQL Server Box from my local machine

Open Query Analyzer from Start menu, logging in using sa account.

from the object browser i select my stored procedure (WEA_InsertClaim) - right click and select Debug.

i am prompted to enter the parameter values, which i do, auto rollback checkbox is checked - click Execute.

T-SQL Debugger opens and runs through the stored procedure.

but only buttons enabled are the "Go", "Toggle Breakpoint", "Clear All Breakpoints"

so i can set breakpoints etc. but when i select Go it will not stop at the breakpoints it just runs through the stored procedure from start to finish. giving the correct return code as its output

is there something i need to enable in order to make it stop at breakpoints??

Cheers,
Craig

Step By Step For Indirect Configuration

Feb 15, 2006

Is there a good step by step guide to setting up an indirect configuration? I've followed the steps in Kirk Haselden's 'Keep your packages in the dark' article 3 or 4 times this afternoon and nothing seems to work. I cannot even get the XML configuration file to work by accessing it directly. I'm using the wizard to create the file.

Just wondering if there was something else out there....

Thanks in advance for any help.

Run A Ssis Package From Job Agent

Oct 27, 2007

Is there a detailed, step by step manual that explains how to set this up?

I can run the package from SSIS but the process to set this up from the job agent is really murky mostly from a security standpoint of setting up user/proxy etc

So I need a cookbook with nice clear explanations

Does one exist?

Thanks

Can't Run SSIS Package Via Agent

Aug 29, 2007

I've seen many postings on various forums on how to get SQL agent to execute an SSIS package. I have one that was originally created via the import wizard in SSMS, later modified in VS2005, and then re-imported in SSMS using the Object Explorer interface to load the dtsx file into SQL storage. I've tried several package protection options when importing the package: "Don't save sensitive data" (the package has no passwords in it), server storage and roles, and a specified package password (which I entered as a /DECRYPT command line parameter in the Agent job step). Agent is running using a domain admin account. No matter what I've tried, I still get an error during job execution that it failed to decrypt the password XML node. The package runs just fine when executed manually in the SSIS Object Explorer.

How can I resolve this?
