Can't Add Index, Too Many Statistical Indexes?

I was trying to add an index to a heavily used table which has one other index. When I did I recieve the following error message
Unable to create index 'IX_PATIENT__1'.
ODBC error: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot create more than 249 nonclustered indices or column statistics on one table.
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Could not create constraint. See previous errors.
I'm working to improve performance on a database I've inherited, and there are several thousand indexes. I've got a list of ones which should definitely exist within the database, and I'm looking to strip out all the others and start fresh, though this list is still quite large (1000 or so).
Is there a way I can remove all the indexes that are not in my list without too much trouble? I.e. without having to manually go through them all individually. The list is currently in a csv file.
I'm looking to either automate the removal of indexes not in the list, or possibly to generate the Create statements for the indexes on the list and simply remove all indexes and then run these statements.
As an aside, when trying to list all indexes in the database, I've found various scripts to do this, but found they all seem to produce differing results. What is the best script to list all indexes?
I was checking out an indexes property via SQL 2005 Management Studioand it looks like I can move the index to other filegroups via thedrop down.I checked the BOL ALTER INDEX and I didnt see an argument for thisaction. I see stuff about PARTITION, but I think that is for rowpartitioning??I want to move existing indexes from the PRIMARY filegroup to a newfile group just for indexes, which is called INDEXES.Can this be done via ALTER INDEX or some other way?TIARob
In SQL Server 2000 one could DBReindex every index that exists in a given database. You can do the same in SQL Server 2005. But how can this be done with the new Alter Index command? It does not allow me to pass in a variable for the object. Any ideas on how to get this done in with Alter Index in 2005? Thanks!

I have a database where records are Inserted by an external process. There is no updating or deleting of the data once inserted. The table in question has a Clustered Index on the Machine_ID (integer) (data is from manufacturing processes). Each record bears a start and end time. Most queries involve the Machine, a time span (start time between to points in time), the Downtime Cause, and the Running Mode.
I want to add an index on the Start Time, the Downtime Cause, and the Runtime Mode.
My question is: should this new index also contain the Machine_id column or does the existence of the Clustered Index already on that column negate its need in the new index?

Can anyone tell me a good way to monitor which indexes are not being used? Over time, I'm sure there are extraneous indexes in our database, which I would like to get rid of.
I've been asked to look at using Clustered Columnstore indexes for one of my tables. The table contains about 5 million records with about 50 columns. The max field size is a NVarchar(MAX) with max field length currently of about 4k characters. It's only about a gigabyte's worth of data. The table is about 50% R/W operations. Currently, we have multiple indexes with no clustered index due to some performance issues that happened in the past. I've been attempting to determine if it's even really worth it to switch over. I feel that the table is still fairly small with minimal columns and don't believe there will be any noticeable improvement over traditional indexing.
We are running SQL Server 2014 Enterprise Edition (64-Bit) on Windows 2012 R2 Standard (64-Bit).
1. When to create indexes, before or after data is added? Please address Clustered and Non-Clustered Indexes.
2. To move indexes to it's own filegroup, is it best to create the NON-Clustered Indexes on the separate filegroup with code similar to the example below?

I have read the following links that states that if you create the Clustered Index on a separate filegroup, it would also move the base table to that particular filegroup. (So I take it that you ONLY can move NON-CLustered Indexes to a separate filegroup.)

• Create nonclustered indexes on a filegroup other than the filegroup of the base table.

• If a table has a clustered index, moving the clustered index to a new filegroup moves the table to that filegroup.

i have a table with columns, count, monther , year , officer, location.
count is number of x owned by officer by month , by year for a location. i want to display the statistical data. can any one give me some ideas bcoz some officers dont own anything, thats what i am looking for. like 0 is owned by these % of officers in this location... something like that.
all this is for differenatiating officers with more work than with less or no work..
Hi everyone, I am storing statistics for different affiliate and merchant sites, and I have a few questions about how to store it. My first idea was to create a serializable array and store it in a statistics column with the rest of the site information. I could even have two columns, one being an archive, and one being the current month. I know these arrays would get quite large, but they would only be retrieved when someone was looking at the statistics. Is this a viable way to do it? The other idea I had was to create tables for each site and ad and store the statistics as rows in each objects respective table. While easy, I didn't know if it was a bad idea to have a very large amount of tables, ie., one for every advertisement and site signed up for the affiliate program. I want to perform SPC on a data set. The type of analysis I want to do is Mode,Median,Max,Min,Average,standard deviation.
Does Sql server have any in built functions to accomadate this type of analysis. Is there any information on the net that I could be referred to. I have SQL Server 7.0 Enterprise Edition.
I want to use functions like Standard Deviation, Variance, and other forms of these (StdDevp, Varp) but am not clear about what these really do. All I know is that if I am clear about these functions, I can really put these to good use. BTW, maybe there are many more functions in addition to the one's that I have listed??
Can you kindly assist me with a mini example in understanding what these functions do?

Let's say I have a table with col1,col2, col3 along with a primary key column and non-indexed columns.In queries, I will use col1, col2, and col3 together and some timesjust one or two of these three columns. My questions is, should Icreate one index contains col1, col2, and col3, or create 3 seperatedcolumns. I.e. each column has its own index. Any performancedifference?Thanks a lot.
I'm working with the statistical functions Stdev and Median with calculated members. The only way I can get the "correct" answer is if I have a dimension at the same granularity as the Fact table (Actually it's a degenerate dimension of the FACT table itself). Otherwise it seems that the measure I'm using with Stdev returns results that are so wildly high, I think it must be acting on the SUM of the measure; because the measure itself is a Summed one. When I try to use the coordinates in the Stdev function, it seems like it is using the wrong set of data points :
stdev( ( [Date].[Date].[Date].members, [Parameter].[Parameter].[Parameter].members ), [Measures].[Value]) returns answers in the thousands when it should be more like 2.5
When used with a query, there would only be a single date member and a specific parameter member. The total number of fact records is between 200 and 500 with values that range between 0 and 150. This is the version that gives me answers that resemble the total sum of the [Measures].[Value].
If I add the dimension that is essentially a row number from the fact table, it gives the right answer (slowly, but that will be a different post ....
It seemed quite easy at first glance. I Built it up via string concatenation and thought to execute the dynamic sql with sp_exec and get the result. As I don't like dynamic sql I was wondering If there is any other way..
I would like to use MatLab built-in statistical functions (beta, gamma, normal, etc.) from inside a SQLServer stored proceudre. Does anyone know if possible? (Of course, If so, where can I get documentation for doing this?)

So I'm reading http://www.sql-server-performance.com/tips/clustered_indexes_p2.aspx and I come across this: When selecting a column to base your clustered index on, try to avoid columns that are frequently updated. Every time that a column used for a clustered index is modified, all of the non-clustered indexes must also be updated, creating additional overhead. [6.5, 7.0, 2000, 2005] Updated 3-5-2004 Does this mean if I have say a table called Item with a clustered index on a column in it called itemaddeddate, and several non-clustered indexes associated with that table, that if a record gets modified and it's itemaddeddate value changes, that ALL my indexes on that table will get rebuilt? Or is it referring to the table structure changing? If so does this "pseudocode" example also cause this to occur: sqlstring="select * from item where itemid=12345" rs.open sqlstring, etc, etc, etc rs.Fields("ItemName")="My New Item Name" rs.Fields("ItemPrice")=1.00 rs.Update Note I didn't explicitly change the value of rs.fields("ItemAddedDate")...does rs.Fields("ItemAddedDate")=rs.Fields("ItemAddedDate") occur implicitly, which would force the rebuild of all the non-clustered indexes?
I have a requirement to only rebuild the Clustered Indexes in the table ignoring the non clustered indexes as those are taken care of by the Clustered indexes.
In order to do that, I have taken the records based on the fragmentation %.
But unable to come up with a logic to only consider rebuilding the clustered indexes in the table.
I am using Full Text Index to index emails stored in BLOB column in a table. Index process parses stored emails, and, if there is one or more files attached to the email these documents get indexed too. In result when I'm querying the full text index for a word or phrase I am getting reference to the email containing the word of phrase if interest if the word was used in the email body OR if it was used in any document attached to the email.
How to distinguish in a Full Text query that the result came from an embedded document rather than from "main" document? Or if that's not possible how to disable indexing of embedded documents?
My goal is either to give a user an option if he or she wants to search emails (email bodies only) OR emails AND documents attached to them, or at least clearly indicate in the returned result the real source where the word or phrase has been found.
Web Base application or PDA devices use to initiate the order from all over the country. The issue is this table is not Partioned but good HP with 30 GB RAM is installed. this is main table that receive 18,0000 hits or more. All brokers and users are using this table to see the status of their order.
The always search by OrderID, or ClientID or order_SubNo, or enter any two like (Client_ID+Order_Sub_ID) or any combination.
Query takes to much time when ever server receive more querys. some orther indexes are also created on the same table like (OrderDate, OrdCreate Date and Status)

Q1. IF Person "A" query to DB on Client_ID, then what Index will use ? (If any one do Query on any two combination like Client_ID+Order_ID, So what index will be uesd.? How does MS-SQL SERVER deal with these kind of issues.?
Q2. If i create 3 more indexes on ClientID, ORderID and OrdersubID. will this improve the performance of query.if person "A" search record on orderNo so what index will be used. (Mind it their would be 3 seprate indexes for Each PK columns) and composite-Clustered index is also available.?
Q3. I want to check what indexes has been used? on what search?
Q4. How can i check what table was populated when, or last date of update (DML)?
My Limitation is i Dont Create a Partioned table. I dont have permission to do it.
In Teradata we had more than 4 tb record of CRM data with no issue. i am not new baby in db line but not expert in sql server 2003.
My SSIS package is running very slow taking so much time to execute, One task is taking 2hr for inserting 100k records, i have disabled unused index still it is taking time.I am rebuilding/Refreshing indexes and stats once in month if i try to execute on daily basis will it improve my SSIS Package performance?
hello friends i have table1 and 200 coulumn of table1 :) i have 647.600 records. i entered my records to table1 with for step to code lines in one day :) i select category1 category2 and category3 with select code but i have just one index.. it is productnumber and it is primarykey..So my select code lines is so slow.. it is 7-9 second.. how can i select in 0.1 second ? Should i create index for category1 and category2 and category3 ? But i dont know create index.. My select code lines is below.. I'm running a merge replication on a sql2k machine to 6 sql2k subscribers. Since a few day's only one of the merge agents fail's with the following error:
The merge process could not retrieve generation information at the 'Subscriber'. The index entry for row ID was not found in index ID 3, of table 357576312, in database 'PBB006'.
All DBCC CHECKDB command's return 0 errors :confused: I'm not sure if the table that's referred to in the message is on the distribution side or the subscribers side? A select * from sysobjects where id=357576312 gives different results on both sides . .
