Can't Get Index Tuning Wizard To Work

Aug 16, 1999

I've tried many times to get the index tuning wizard to work...It never seems to find any 'parseable queries' in my workload file. I believe that I'm running the profiler correctly.

When I submit a simple sql file as a workload file, I get a 'server error creating table or index analysis...' back.

Any suggestions or hints?

Thanks,

Steve

Hi,

I wanted to use the Index Tuning Wizard to monitor the performance of a stored procedure but the option is greyed out. Is there a way to turn this functionality on, or does this indicate that this option is not installed ?

Thanks,

HiI tried running ITW against one of our databases, and it came up with anumber of suggestions, but also filled the Application Log with messageslike:-The description for Event ID ( 4 ) in Source ( ITW ) could not be found. Itcontains the following insertion string(s):Error in Parsing Event:declare @P1 nvarchar(1)declare @P2 nvarchar(1)declare @P3 nvarchar(1)declare @P4 nvarchar(1)EXEC "dbo"."sp_get_RAO_indexW2K2" @P1 , @P2 , @P3 , @P4 .Does anyone know if this is serious (or indeed what it means at all)?There were no apparent errors in the ITW run.Chloe Crowder

Removing Tuning Wizard Indexes

Jul 20, 2005

Just curious if anyone has a script to find and delete all indexescreated by index tuning wizard, leaving the original indexes untouched.All of the original indexes in this particular database are precededwith IX_, whereas those created by ITW are the table name followed by anumber.I'm thinking of something along the lines of "sp_MSforeachtable@command1="print '?'" + a DBCC which just targets the ITW indexes (ifsuch a thing exists). Any ideas how to go about this?

Index Tuning

for what purpose we are splitting the non-clustered index into 3 instead of 1

create index si_acct_info_dtl_INDX1 on si_acct_info_dtl(account_code, ctrl_acct_type)
create index si_doc_hdrfk_ci_acct_info_dtl on si_acct_info_dtl(tran_ou, tran_type, tran_no)

whether index rebuit everycolumn when search is given????.if we build the index in one
statement like this:create index si_acct on si_acct_info_dtl(batch_id)
create index si_acct_info_dtl_guid on si_acct_info_dtl(batch_id,account_code, ctrl_acct_type,tran_ou, tran_type, tran_no)

Index Tuning

Apr 22, 2008

Hi,

Our reporting tool dynamically creates tables and fields based upon Excel spreadsheets that are imported. To improve query performance, we are attempting to create indices on these tables automatically. The problem we are facing is that the tool allows the user to group the data by a whole range of fields when generating reports, therefore making it hard to decide what indices to create.

So, as an example, we have a table that has 10 VARCHAR(250) fields (the default size for text based fields in the tool), each of which could potentially be in the group by clause, and 15 numeric fields on which calculations will be carried out.

Is there a single index that we can create dynamically that would improve performance for all potential queries that may be generated? Such as an index that contains all the 10 VARCHAR(250) fields, and the numeric values as Included Columns?

If so, what effect does the order of the fields in the index have, ie we have some fields that have a lot of distinct values and some that have only a few. Which ones should appear higher in the list?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Index Performance Tuning Help

Oct 22, 2007

I'm using the Database Engine Tuning Advisor to do some performance evaluation on my database. I have one particular table that will potentially have a couple million rows. but this may not occur for a few months to a year from now.

when i run the advisor with 1.5 million rows, it recommends that i add an index across all columns in this table (covering index) for an estimated 91% improvement. when i run it with 1500 rows in it, it recommends that i add an index on 2 key columns for an 8% improvement.

how should i reconcile this? can i have both and what does that do to performance?

Index Tuning : ReportServer DB

Nov 1, 2007

Hi All!

I would like to try and increase the performance of the reportserver database. Im thinking of adding an index to dbo.catalog.itemID - before I break the database and subsequently kill the 200+ reports i spent ages writing, does anyone know of any problems doing this?

The reports seem to be a bit slow first run but speed up during the course of the day - the server generates about 1500 instances of reports each day (7 instances of reportmanager all pointing to the reportserver db). I primarily use precompiled storedprocedures to feed the datasets so this is why im thinking index tuning may help.

Any thoughts/comments are welcomed!

as the work load file does not return any records the index tuning wizard does not suggest any changes In the indexing
tell me HOW DO I DETERMINE WHAT INDEXES TO CREATE FOR A OPTIMISED DATABESE ?

Performance Tuning Using Index. How To Force The Query Engine To Use It?

Nov 14, 2007

Hello all.
I have the following table

Create Table Item(
I_AssetCode NVarChar(40) Primary Key NOT NULL,
I_Name NVarChar(160),
I_BC nvarchar(20),
I_Company nvarchar(20)
);

Create Index ind_Item_Name on Item(I_Name);
Create Index ind_Item_BC on Item(I_BC);
Create Index ind_Item_Company on Item(I_Company);

It is populated with 50 000 records.
Searching on indexed columns is fast, but I've run into the following problem:
I need to get all distinct companies in the table.
I've tried with these two queries, but they both are very slow!

1. "select I_Company from item group by I_Company " - This one takes 19 seconds

2. "select distinct(I_Company) from item" -This one takes 29 secons

When I ran them through the SQL Management Studio and checked the performance plan, I saw that the second one doesn't use index at all ! So I focused on the first...
The first one used index (it took it 15% of the time), but then it ran the "stream aggregate" which took 85% of the time !
Actully 15% of 19 seconds - about 2 seconds is pretty much enough for me. But it looks that aggregate function is run for nothing!
So is it possible to force the query engine of the SSCE not to run it, since there is actually no aggregate functions in my select clause?
According to SQL CE Books online:
Group By

"Specifies the groups (equivalence classes) that output rows are to be placed in. If aggregate functions are included in the SELECT clause <select list>, the GROUP BY clause calculates a summary value for each group."
It seems the aggregate is run every time, not only when there is an aggregate function.

Is this a bug?

Thanks in advance,
TipoMan

How Do I Set Access 2002 Upsizing Wizard To Create Clustered-index On SQL 2005

Jun 3, 2006

Here is an extract from the Acc2Sql2.doc >>

By default, the Upsizing Wizard
transfers all indexes as nonclustered indexes. You can modify the Upsizing
Wizard to transfer the primary key index to a clustered index. To make this
change, start Microsoft Access and open the upsizing wizard library database.
For Microsoft Access 95, the filename is Wzcs.mda. For Microsoft Access 97, the
filename is Wzcs97.mda. When the database is open, click the Modules tab and open the
UT_ModUserConstants module. Search down to the UT_CLUSTERED constant. Change
the default value from False to True.

<<< end quote
Question: I am using ACCESS 2002 upsize wizard, I searched my computer for *.mda and could not find any wzcs*.mda. How do I set it so that it creates clustered-index instead of non-clustered-index?

What Index Will Work Best?

Dec 24, 2007

A common search technique for us is to pass a bunch of parameters to a query, but to leave most of the parameters empty. We only get records that match all parameters. So I can search for orders in CO with an email that includes yahoo.com. In some cases we search multiple fields for the same data and return the matching data. For example, there are 2 fields that could match @SchoolName. If either 1 matches that's okay.

How do I index this for the fastest results? (I'm new to SQL Server indexing). Do I want 1 index that includes all possible fields? Or individual indexes on each field? Or something else?

Here's a sample SPROC with a couple of parameters implemented in the WHERE clause:

Code Block
ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[Plan_Search]
(
@Ordernum VARCHAR(15),
@SchoolName VARCHAR(40),
@Zipcode VARCHAR(15),
@City VARCHAR(40),
@State VARCHAR(5),
@Contact VARCHAR(40),
@Ponumber VARCHAR(20),
@Quoteid VARCHAR(15),
@Phone VARCHAR(15),
@Email VARCHAR(75)
)
AS
BEGIN
-- SET NOCOUNT ON added to prevent extra result sets from
-- interfering with SELECT statements.
SET NOCOUNT ON ;

SELECT Ordernum,
( CASE WHEN Corrname LIKE '%' + @SchoolName + '%'
THEN Corrname
ELSE bilname
END ) AS School,
Corrcity AS City,
Corrstate AS State,
Corrzip AS Zipcode,
Daterecved,
Dateshiped,
Level,
Package,
Totplnrord,
Purchordno,
Checkindate
FROM PlannerOrders
WHERE ordernum LIKE '%' + @Ordernum + '%'
AND ( corrname LIKE '%' + @SchoolName + '%'
OR [bilschool] LIKE '%' + @SchoolName + '%'

Index For Access Query Work ?

Feb 27, 2007

Not sure which forum too put this question

I have recently upgraded my Access Database too use SQL server 2005 using the upsizing wizard. I have selected too use SQL Linked tables instead off the ADP project for ease off conversion. So now the tables are on the SQL server and the queries are still local.

On off my Access forms which returns a datasheet view by accessing the a query is now running really slowly now SQL server is the backend, I was wondering if I can put an index on one of the tables too speed it up, as the query is local too Access will this work? Just wondering if anyone ever come across this.

Same Order Doesn't Work - Invalid Descriptor Index

Dec 28, 2005

Hi all,

I'm getting this "invalid descriptor index" exception while trying to fetch a record from the table.
The query is "select * from <tablename> where <columnname> = 'xyz'". The column name is correct and indeed a record with 'xyz' value exists. The record is getting fetched too...! But I'm having this particular error while trying to retrieve a couple of fields with rs.getString().
The order of columns in the table is same as the order in which I'm retrieving them. And I'm not facing any problem retrieving another field which has width of 200 characters.
I'll be very grateful indeed if someone can help me out of this particular problem...

Cheers, mates!

SQL Server 2012 :: Index View Won't Work With Hierarchical Tables?

Apr 4, 2015

Consider following code:

SELECT e1.EntityIdentity as CompanyID
FROM dbo.Entitye1 --company
JOIN dbo.EntityAssociationea
ON e1.EntityID = ea.EntityID1
JOIN dbo.Entitye2 --user
ON ea.EntityID2 = e2.EntityID

This query occurs as a sub-query in many stored procedures where exists a WHERE clause that includes CompanyID IN (above query).

Since dbo.Entity and dbo.EntityAssociation change infrequently I thought that an indexed view would really improve performance. But I've found one of the seemingly undocumented Microsoft features when trying to create the clustered index and get the following error msg:

Msg 1947, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Cannot create index on view "ROICore.dbo.vEntityEntityAssociation_CompanyUser". The view contains a self join on "ROICore.dbo.Entity".

I really need to improve performance on this subquery. Entity currently has over 20m rows and EntityAssociation over 35m rows and both are growing.

How to improve performance? Indexes on both tables for the most part give index seeks, but I thought my saviour might be the index view. Obviously this will not work.

Importing Data From Oracle 8i/9i To SQL Server 2005 Using SQL Server Import And Export Wizard (AKA DTS Wizard)

Oct 20, 2006

Hi All,

I have become frustrated and I am not finding the answers I expect.

Here's the gist, we support both Oracle and SQL for our product and we would like to migrate our Clients who are willing/requesting to go from Oracle to SQL. Seems easy enough.

So, I create a Database in SQL 2005, right click and select "Import Data", Source is Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle and I setup my connection. so far so good.

I create my Destination for SQL Native Client to the Database that I plan on importing into. Still good

Next, I select "Copy data from one or more tables or views". I move on to the next screen and select all of the Objects from a Schema. These are Tables that only relate to our application or in other words, nothing Oracle System wise.

When I get to the end it progresses to about 20% and then throws this error about 300 or so times:

Could not connect source component.
Warning 0x80202066: Source - AM_ALERTS [1]: Cannot retrieve the column code page info from the OLE DB provider. If the component supports the "DefaultCodePage" property, the code page from that property will be used. Change the value of the property if the current string code page values are incorrect. If the component does not support the property, the code page from the component's locale ID will be used.

So, I'm thinking "Alright, we can search on this error and I'm sure there's an easy fix." I do some checking and indeed find out that there is a property setting called "AlwaysUseDefaultCodePage" in the OLEDB Data Source Properties. Great! I go back and look at the connection in the Import and .... there's nothing with that property!

Back to the drawing board. I Create a new SSIS package and figure out quickly that the AlwaysUseDefaultCodePage is in there. I can transfter information from the Oracle Source Table to the SQL Server 2005 Destination Table, but it appears to be a one to one thing. Programming this, if I get it to work at all, will take me about 150 hours or so.

This make perfect sense if all you are doing is copying a few columns or maybe one or two objects, but I am talking about 600 + objects with upwards of 2 million rows of data in each!!

This generates 2 questions:
1. If the Import Data Wizard cannot handle this operation on the fly, then why can't the AlwaysUseDefaultCodePage property be shown as part of the connection
2. How do I create and SSIS Package that will copy all of the data from Oracle to SQL Server? The source tables have been created and have the same Schema and Object Names as the Source. I don't want to create a Data Flow Task 600 times.

Help!!!

SQL 2012 :: Full Text Index How To Make It NOT To Index Embedded Or Attached Documents

Sep 30, 2015

I am using Full Text Index to index emails stored in BLOB column in a table. Index process parses stored emails, and, if there is one or more files attached to the email these documents get indexed too. In result when I'm querying the full text index for a word or phrase I am getting reference to the email containing the word of phrase if interest if the word was used in the email body OR if it was used in any document attached to the email.

How to distinguish in a Full Text query that the result came from an embedded document rather than from "main" document? Or if that's not possible how to disable indexing of embedded documents?

My goal is either to give a user an option if he or she wants to search emails (email bodies only) OR emails AND documents attached to them, or at least clearly indicate in the returned result the real source where the word or phrase has been found.

SQL Tuning Help

Feb 21, 2005

Hey,

SQL Server 7.

I have a view which joins 3 tables. One has 15 million rows the next another 5 million and the third 500k.
When I join them the execution plan tells me that 15 million rows were retrieved from the first (taking about 5 mins) 1.5 million from the 2nd taking 3 mins and 4.5 million from the third taking almost no time.

The first two ause a clustered index, one being a seek the other a scan and the third a regular index seek. All followed by a hash match/inner join which takes 2 mins.

Any ideas on optimizing the SQL?

Here is the syntax:
SELECT b.packno, b.COMM_DATE, a.ben_grp_cr, a.ben_dsc_cr, c.gst_inc,
SUM(a.credit)
FROM TABC c INNER JOIN TABB B
ON b.PACKNO = c.PACKNO AND
b.COMM_DATE = BENDTL.COMM_DATE AND
b.BEN_NUM = c.BEN_NUM INNER JOIN
TABA a ON b.tran_id = a.tran_id
WHERE b.tran_date > '20040401' AND c.gst_inc = 0
GROUP BY b.packno, b.COMM_DATE, a.ben_grp_cr, a.ben_dsc_cr,
