Can I Insert/Update Large Text Field To Database Without Bulk Insert?
Nov 14, 2007
I have a web form with a text field that needs to take in as much as the user decides to type and insert it into an nvarchar(max) field in the database behind. I've tried using the new .write() method in my update statement, but it cuts off the text after a while. Is there a way to insert/update in SQL 2005 this without resorting to Bulk Insert? It bloats the transaction log and turning the logging off requires a call to sp_dboptions (or a straight-up ALTER DATABASE), which I'd like to avoid if I can.

I have to update a field within a table of 60 records or so. Each record has a different field value. it's type varchar. i was given an excel file with the field values and was thinking of a bulk update like bulk insert, but i don't recall that it's possible that way.
Is the only way to create a table, bulk insert, then merge the two tables together with UPDATE?
Just wanted to see if there was an easier way to do it, otherwise i'll take the latter route. Thanks!

Hello,
I'm just learning SSIS and I've hit my first bump. I am doing a bulk import from a tab delimited text file to an empty sql table that has a Idendity column defined. How do I tell the bulk insert task to skip that column when inserting from the text file. If I remove the identity column it imports the data fine, but I want to create the indentity column in the table too.
Thanks.

Hi,
I am trying to do a bulk insert using a text file that is comma delimited.
In the text file there are fields which are surrounded by quotes and contain commas; these commans should not be considered delimiters.
Is there a way to tell the BULK INSERT statement not to treat these as delimiters?
thanks,

Hi ,
I have imported an event log file from an NT server in a test database . The table has been created automatically with some 10 columns as Col001...Col002 ...and so on till Col0010 .
Now i want to copy the data of the event logs to specific columns . So i created a table with name such as Evnt , date , time , server and evntdescription so that whenever i can execute a simple query like
Select * from tablename where type = 'app' , Server = 'test1 ' .
so that i get all the results for that server 'test1 with type 'application' .
The problem is how do i insert that event log file into the table which i have created with different columns names . So that the data with 'App' should go to column 'type , data with server name should go to the column name server and so on ..
I tried all the was but could not succeed . Can i get some help in this regard please through some stored procedures or through DTS , if its possible .
The server is SQL Server 2000 with SP 1.
Many thanks
Anita .

I am trying to perform a bulk insert in SQL Query analyzer. This is the Schema for my table:
Taxonomic_Units Table:
INT 4 tsn
CHAR 1 unit_ind1
CHAR 35 unit_name1
CHAR 1 unit_ind2
CHAR 34 unit_name2
CHAR 7 unit_ind3
CHAR 35 unit_name3
CHAR 7 unit_ind4
CHAR 35 unit_name4
CHAR 1 unnamed_taxon_ind
CHAR 12 usage
CHAR 50 unaccept_reason
CHAR 40 credibility_rtng
CHAR 10 completeness_rtng

INT 4 taxon_author_id
INT 4 hybrid_author_id
SMALLINT 2 kingdom_id
SMALLINT 2 rank_id
DATETIME 4 update_date
CHAR 3 uncertain_prnt_ind
I use the following SQL Statement to BULK INSERT:
BULK INSERT itis.taxonomic_units
FROM '<dir path to input file>/taxonomic_units.txt'
WITH
(
FIELDTERMINATOR = '|',
ROWTERMINATOR = '|',
KEEPIDENTITY,
KEEPNULLS
)
Here is a sample of a row that I get an error when it is processed through the above BULK INSERT statement:
50||Bacteria||||||||invalid||No review; untreated NODC data|unknown|unknown||1996-06-13 14:51:08.0||||1|10|07/29/1996||
The error is:
Server: Msg 4864, Level 16, State 1, Line 1Bulk insert data conversion error (type mismatch) for row 1, column 17 (initial_time_stamp).
Just to make things easier on anyone who tries to help me solve this problem, the field that causes my Bulk insert statement to choke contains the data: "1996-06-13 14:51:08.0". Why is this happening? Any thoughts on how to solve it? I have been scouring help articles all day with no resolution to this problem.

The files have pipe delimters and double quotes as text qualifiers. I can get the file to import with a bulk insert statement, but it brings in the double quotes in as well. What setting is it that can be set to indicate what the text qualifiers are?

[EDIT #2]
Using this query:
Code:
INSERT INTO Users (userName, UserSalt, UserHash1, UserHash2, UT_memberID)
select memberFirstName + '.' + memberLastName + '56' as userName, '{AxxxxxDE-6xx6-4xxD-Bxx9-3xxxx79xxxxE}',
'{4xxxxxx6-8xx5-6xxD-Cxx6-4xxxFxxx1xx9}', '{0xxx8xxE-Cxx4-6xx8-ExxB-Dxxxx4xxx2xC}', members.memberID
From members
Inner Join groupLeaders ON members.memberID = groupLeaders.memberID
SELECT @@Identity AS UserID
How can I modify the portion that is inserting the '56' at the end of each username to do the following:
1) check to see if username already exists in the database (using a query with "LIKE %'")
2) if not, create the username "as-is" or how it should be without the number
3) if already exists, get a count of records matching your search criteria .... now make a new username + + (count + 1).ToString();
Any thoughts... I am struggling to put these two pieces together.
Thanks,
Zoop
[EDIT - original post below this]
I have modified my method to make this a bit easier. I added a memberID field to my [Users] table so that I can update my [Members] table in a difference statement after the insert takes place.
I have the following query, and it completes succesfully in query analyzer (though I haven't actually executed the SP, just testing the syntax...) anyway, here is what I have:
Code:
INSERT INTO Users (userName, UserSalt, UserHash1, UserHash2, UT_memberID)
select memberFirstName + '.' + memberLastName + '56' as userName, '{AxxxxxDE-6xx6-4xxD-Bxx9-3xxxx79xxxxE}',
'{4xxxxxx6-8xx5-6xxD-Cxx6-4xxxFxxx1xx9}', '{0xxx8xxE-Cxx4-6xx8-ExxB-Dxxxx4xxx2xC}', members.memberID
From members
Inner Join groupLeaders ON members.memberID = groupLeaders.memberID
SELECT @@Identity AS UserID
I am hoping this will create a user for all members whose 'memberID' can be found in the groupLeaders table... is this correct?
Also, notice the 56 being appended to the end of each username. I would like this to be a random number generated within a given range... can this be done? any advice?
Thanks,
Zoop
[Original post below - provide more background]
I have three tables involved with this insert/update:
[Members]
-memberID
-memberFirstName
-memberLastName
-UserID
[GroupLeaders]
-groupLeaderID
-memberID
[Users]
-UserID
-Username
-UserSalt
-UserHash1
-UserHash2
I want to insert into the [Users] table the memberFirstName.memberLastName + randomNum into the 'UserName' column from the [Members] table. Also, I want to make all passwords the same, in this case I know the Salt, Hash1, Hash2 I will be using and would like to pass these in for the 'UserHash1' 'UserHash2' fields.
Now, I only want to make this insert where the memberID is in the GroupLeaders table. and Finally, I need to Update my Members table with a UserID where the memberID matches the one used from the groupLeaders table.
Does anyone have any ideas on how I can accomplish this, even if it requires adding a temporary field to one of my tables... here is what I have so far, but am recieving errors and can't quite figure this one out. (btw - I also don't know how to gen the rand num and was using the literal 23 as a placeholder.) Thanks...
Code:
INSERT INTO Users (userName, UserSalt, UserHash1, UserHash2)
select a.memberFirstName + '.' + a.memberLastName + '23' + as userName, '{AA99FCDE-6E06-437D-B9E9-3E3D27955C3E}',
'{7xxxxxx2-4xx6-9xx1-7xx9-4x3xx4Axxx59}', '{0xx8xxE-Cxx4-6xxx-xxxx-Fxx3xxxx3xxF}', b.memberID as newMemID
From members a, groupLeaders b
Where a.memberID = b.memberID
SELECT @@Identity AS UserID
Update Members Set UserID = Ident_Current('Users')
where memberID = newMemID
Any help is appreciated!

I need a fresh set of eyes.
On a daily basis I need to perform a bulk update. Table totals about 50,000 records with approximately 5,000 changing (deletes, edits, and new records) per day. I'd like to push just the updates somehow, but VB is too slow and I haven't found a way in to handle it in DTS. Not much experience w/ DTS.
I'm transfering between two SQL 2000 servers w/ a VB app sitting in the middle.
Any ideas?

I have created an SSIS package, in my VS2005 solution, that Bulk Inserts a CSV file (see example below)
"100",2006-10-03 00:00:00,"HEX012",1"101",2006-10-03 00:00:00,"DS00130",1
I have a Bulk Insert Task that uses a Flat File Connection Manager to import my CSV file into my SQL2005 database.
My source CSV file (see example above), has double quatation marks surrounding any text fileds.
I have set the Flat File Connection Manager's 'Text Qualifier' to double quatation marks.
The Bulk Insert works ok, but ignores the Text Qualifier.
My database table is left with the original quatation marks in any text field.
Any help appreciated.

Paul.

OK, Ive read many posts on this problem but have seen no resolution.
Here's the deal. When on the actual SQL box (There's 2 in the cluster) the bulk insert works fine. No errors and the event log on the machine that is hosting the text file shows that the account that SQL runs on has accessed the file. This account is a DOmain account and is in the Local Administrator of the SQL server and the remot box hosting the text file.
Thats great if you want your developers testing and accessing your SQL box as Administrators. We don't work that way. Our developers connect via SQL Management Studio and test ther stuff that way. That's where the problem rears it's ugly head.
When anyone runs a Bulk Insert command that accesses a text file that is on a remote server, they get an "Access Denied". Now, I did a lot of testing and found that when the users executes the Bulk Insert command from the SQL Management studio on their desk top, they connect to the SQL box with their credentials (OK, that's correct right?), SQL then runs the Bulk Isert command which then reaches out to the remote file server but gets the "Access Denied". I check the logs and it shows that "Anonymous" was trying to accesss the file.
Why is Anonymouss coming over as credentials for SQL on a Bulk Insert? I'm no idiot but this sounds like a big crappy bug tha M$ will not fess to. I followed many suggestions, made sure NTFS and Share level permissions were correct (That was the first thing...), made sure the account that was running as SQL Server within the cluster on both nodes in the cluster was the same, that wasn't it, I even created a SPN for SQL to run and automatically register in AD with the credentials that SQL runs as. NOTHING!!!
Has anyone gotten their bulk insert to work when inserting from a file that is NOT local to the SQL box? Any help is appreciated, but putting the text files on the local SQL box IS NOT AN OPTION.
Thanks

I am using a BCP format file to import a CSV file. The file looks like the following:
"01","02"
The format file looks like the following:
6.0
2
1 SQLCHAR 0 0 """ 0 ""
2 SQLINT 0 0 "","" 1 MROS
3 SQLINT 0 0 ""
" 2 MROF
When both the two fields are set to SQLCHAR data types the data imports successfully without the quotes as 01 and 02. These fields will always be numbers and I want them as integers so I set the data type to int in the database and SQLINT in the format file. The results was that the 01 became 12592 and the 02 became 12848. where these numbers are coming from?

I am using Microsoft SQL 2005, I need to do a BULK INSERT from a .csv I just downloaded from paypal. I can't edit some of the columns that are given in the report. I am trying to load specific columns from the file.
bulk insert Orders
FROM 'C:Users*******DesktopDownloadURL123.csv'
WITH
(
FIELDTERMINATOR = ',',
FIRSTROW = 2,
ROWTERMINATOR = ''
)
So where would I state what column names (from row #1 on the .csv file) would be used into what specific column in the table.
I saw this on one of the sites which seemed to guide me towards the answer, but I failed.. here you go, it might help you:
FORMATFILE [ = 'format_file_path' ]
Specifies the full path of a format file. A format file describes the data file that contains stored responses created using the bcp utility on the same table or view. The format file should be used in cases in which:
The data file contains greater or fewer columns than the table or view.
The columns are in a different order.
The column delimiters vary.
There are other changes in the data format. Format files are usually created by using the bcp utility and modified with a text editor as needed. For more information, see bcp Utility.

I have a fundamental problem with how CDC works for bulk updates. When CDC enabled table is updated for single row - My CDC system tables its recording it as update (3 & 4) which is perfect and what it should be. No Complains! But when I do a bulk update in the same CDC enabled tables for the same columns - My CDC system tables its recording as delete and then insert (1 & 2). This is not correct and this is what my problem is. We used triggers before CDC we did not face this problem with triggers every thing was fine with triggers other than performance. The way how the CDC is handling the bulk update is a big problem for me because based on the output of CDC system tables we are doing some migration work to legacy system.
It will be impossible for me to go and change my migration logic scripts because we have 100's or procedures in it.Is it a know problem with CDC? Is there any solution in CDC when a bulk update happens on a table the CDC system tables record it as updates. I don't think CDC 'net changes' in this situation because the net change would show as single inserted row.If this can't be done with CDC then I have to completely abandon CDC and go back to triggers..

Our system runs a SQL Server 2012 DB, it has a table (table_a) which has over 10M records. Our system have to receive data file from previous system daily which contains approximate 3M updated or new records for table_a. My job is to update table_a with the new data.
The initial solution is:
1 Create a table (table_b) which structur is as the same as table_a
2 Use BCP to import updated records into table_b
3 Remove outdated data in table_a:
delete from table_a inner join table_b on table_a.key_fileds = table_b.key_fields
4 Append updated or new data into table_a:
insert into table_a select * from table_b
As the test result, this solution is very inefficient. Step 3 costs several hours, e.g. How can I improve it?

If I have a table with 1 or more Nullable fields and I want to make sure that when an INSERT or UPDATE occurs and one or more of these fields are left to NULL either explicitly or implicitly is there I can set these to non-null values without interfering with the INSERT or UPDATE in as far as the other fields in the table?
EXAMPLE:
CREATE TABLE dbo.MYTABLE(
ID NUMERIC(18,0) IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
FirstName VARCHAR(50) NULL,
LastName VARCHAR(50) NULL,
[Code] ....
If an INSERT looks like any of the following what can I do to change the NULL being assigned to DateAdded to a real date, preferable the value of GetDate() at the time of the insert? I've heard of INSTEAD of Triggers but I'm not trying tto over rise the entire INSERT or update just the on (maybe 2) fields that are being left as null or explicitly set to null. The same would apply for any UPDATE where DateModified is not specified or explicitly set to NULL. I would want to change it so that DateModified is not null on any UPDATE.
INSERT INTO dbo.MYTABLE( FirstName, LastName, DateAdded)
VALUES('John','Smith',NULL)
INSERT INTO dbo.MYTABLE( FirstName, LastName)
VALUES('John','Smith')
INSERT INTO dbo.MYTABLE( FirstName, LastName, DateAdded)
SELECT FirstName, LastName, NULL
FROM MYOTHERTABLE

we can easily load a file into db tables. However, my main concern here is the number of columns in the file. A text file TEXT_1400.txt has 1400 columns. I am unable to load data to my db table using BCP or BULK INSERT commands, as maximum of 1024 columns are allowed per table in SQL Server 2008.
We can still go ahead and create ‘Wide Table’ (a special table that holds up to 30,000 columns. The maximum size of a wide table row is 8,019 bytes.). But when operating on wide table, BCP/BULK INSERT commands still fail. After few hours of scratching my head over BCP and BULK INSERT, I observed that while inserting BCP/BULK INSERT commands are unable to identify SPARSE columns and skip these columns, which disturbs column mapping and results in data conversion and trancation errors.
Is there any proper way to load this kind of files into the db table?

I realise this may be a very simple question for most of you, but if you can help this could save me a ton of work. Yes, I am a newbie.
I need to create a database and bulk insert data. The format for the table is set as an html file, the schema file is set as a txt file, and the data is in the form of a text file. I can see that this should be simple, but I just can't get the syntax right.
I have tried writing a simple query to do this and have read and re-read the appropriate microsoft pages but still no luck - not for the want of trying.
What I want to do is eventually manipulate the data from Visual Basic. I tried doing all this firstly via Visual Basic, then via MySQL and finally decided that seting up a database via Microsoft SQL ought to be the easiest way to go since it can easily be accessed via Visual Basic.
Any help will be appreciated.
