Can I Install SQL 2005 Server Express On A Machine That Has SQL 2000 Server
Mar 26, 2007
I have a dedicated server running SQL Server 2000 on Windows 2003. Can I install SQL Server 2005 express so that I can run sites developed with VWD Express. I still have the sites that need to use the sql 2000 server.
Hello ,i am an asp.net developer my pc has sql server 2005 already and now my company use sql server 2000I think 2005 is very easy to use but some of 2000 that I don't know so can I install 2000 in the same machine with 2005 ?thanks for your kindness.Kate
I have tried this several times and each time get the same result. I even installed Visual Studio 2008 beta 2 - everything but SQL Server Express installed fine. The error I get when running the SQL Server 2005 Express download is (from the log file):
Doing Action: Do_sqlScript PerfTime Start: Do_sqlScript : Mon Nov 12 22:31:11 2007 Service MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS with parameters '-m SqlSetup -Q -qSQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS -T4022 -T3659 -T3610 -T4010' is being started at Mon Nov 12 22:31:11 2007 SQL service MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS started successfully waiting for SQL service to accept client connections Service MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS started at Mon Nov 12 22:31:18 2007 SQL_ERROR (-1) in OdbcConnection::connect sqlstate=IM003, level=-1, state=-1, native_error=160, msg=Specified driver could not be loaded due to system error 193 (SQL Native Client).

Error 29515. SQL Server Setup could not connect to the database service for server configuration. The error was: Specified driver could not be loaded due to system error 193 (SQL Native Client). Refer to server error logs and setup logs for more information. For details on how to view setup logs, see "How to View Setup Log Files" in SQL Server Books Online.
I have no idea what the error is or how to fix it; I've enountered a number of postings related to install errors but none match exactly.
I do have the full log. Thanks in advance for any/all help!
Hello, Sorry for my question, I know, that there were several topics about sql 2000 vs SQL 2005, I read all them but unfortunately I haven't got the correct answer. I must install my intranet application that uses asp.net 2.0 and SQL 2005 Express to a Windows 2003 server with SQL 2000. It is possible to install SQL 2005 Express beside the 2000 server? It is very important, because I have no possibility to test and that Win2003 server there are a few programs that use SQL 2000. What will happen with the 2000 databases and their programs if I install the 2005 Express to the server? They will work fine with 2000 and my application will work with 2005? Or instead it should I configure my application to use 2000 capable connentionstrings?
I'm facing a problem while installing the SQL Server 2005 Express on Windows 2000 Pro with SP4.
After finishing the downloading from Microsoft I start the installation and things seems to go ok but during Extracting Files step a message appears "SQL Server Setup unexpectedly failed. For more information, review the setup summary log file in %Program Files%Microsoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOGSummary.txt" and it terminates the installation.
I located the log file and open it but can't understand the problem..I copy the text and paste it here for anyone who can understand it.Please, it is very importand for me to work with SQL Server for my project. Any advice or information or anything else???
Thank you all,

I have done a full Sql Server install on a server and the SSIS service is not available. Normally when I load Sql Server I get €œSQL Server Integration Services" as a service that I can start. On this machine it is not listed after the install. I don't get any errors through out the install.
I have installed Visual Studio 2005 Prof Edition on a Vista machine and SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition on a Windows 2000 server. They will be used as a development environment for us. As we need to management the SQL Server 2005, we would like to install the 2005 Developer SSMS on the Vista machine such that we can manage the SQL Server 2005 developer instance installed on that Win2k machine. However, the system does not allow us to do it. We have the express edition autoamtically installed while we installed the Vistual Studio. Is there any workaround that i can still install the 2005 developer SSMS without uninstall the sql server 2005 Xpress version? Or, I have to uninstall the Xpress version before i can install the 2005 developer's SSMS? Please help!
Hi all, I'm about to download the VWD ASP.NET 2.0 with SQL Express 2005, but i currently have Visual studio.net 1.1 and SQL Server 2000 installed on my PC, XP Pro. Has anyone had problems with this or are they happy to run along side one another without over writing projects already created in the older versions? Thanks in advance. Allen
I have first installed SQL Server 2005 and after that SQL Express 2005. In machine.config I set the LocalSqlServer, needed for membership and stuff, to my SQL Server (using aspnet_regsql.exe tool). But because I saw some interesting articles with sample code that use .mdf files I also installed SQL Express. But the problem is that every time I want to execute something against .mdf file or want to see the tables in server explorer I get this error message:Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.I also stopped SQL Server process but that didn't do the trick. What do I have to do to get these 2 working on my laptop?
(1) I have already installed of SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition first.
(1) Can I install visual studio 2008 without the 2005 express edition of SQL server? Will be any problems because I don't have express edition of SQL server? Do I need to install the express edition of SQL server as well?
(3) How to use SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition instance on visual studio 2008?
i have SQL Server 2000 running on my notebook for learning purposes. Is it possible to run SQL Server 2005 on the same notebook without using virtual machines?
I'd like to draw on your expertise on this topic. I've been browsing at many blogs/forums about installing SQL Server 2000 and 2005 on the same machine.
What I'd like to know is how does that work with Reporting Services? Your machine's IIS will need to work with Reporting Services 2000 and Reporting Services 2005. The RS 2005 requires .NET Framework 2.0 and RS 2000 requires .NET Framework 1.1. IIS can only support 1 version of the .NET Framework at a time.
I've got to install sql server 2000 and 2005 on our test computer (sql server 2000 is already installed). I've heard from the grapevine that trying to install 2005 with 2000 already installed can cause problems, and its difficult for sql 2000 and 2005 to co-exist on the same machine.
I am interested in installing both SQL Server 2005 Express and SQL Server2005 b2 on the same machine. Can they both be installed on the same machinewithout conflicts? As in two different instances?John Dalberg
Hi I would like to ask If its possible to have installed MSDE 2000 and SQL 2005 Express on the same machine. My computer uses MSDE 2000 for one application and I would like to install SQL 2005 Express for my own application. I would like to ask it will be a problem before I install it. thanks a lot Martin Molnar
I'm just wondering if the MSDE & SQL Server 2005 Express can run on the same machine(winxp) without conflicts. Because I need both the reporting services & the publication functionality of replication.
I know there have been many posts made on this subject; however, despite the resources available, I have not been able to get this to work! I've spent time working on this here and there over the last couple of months only resulting in frustration. I am finally posting to solicit help for my situation to figure out what is wrong with my SQL Server or firewall configuration.
Two machines connected to a router, one wireless, one wired. Both have SQL Server Express and the Management Studio tools installed. From either machine I can connect to its local SQL Server Express instance.
I have enabled Shared Memory, Named Pipes, TCP/IP, and VIA in the SQL Server Configuration Manager. (BTW what is VIA?)
I have added sqlsrvr.exe and sqlbrowser.exe to my Windows Firewall exceptions. I have tried disabling Windows Firewall. One of the machines is configured as DMZ in the router configuration.
Please, someone offer up some brilliant diagnostic steps I am missing to expose what is wrong in my setup and make this work... Thank you!
I have SQL server 7 installed and running ok. Can I install express server? The idea is to have two different databases for different applications, each running in each sql.
I have a PC running the 64 bit version of vista home premium (will be soon upgrading to ultimate).
On the download page http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-au/express/bb410792.aspx for SQL Server Express under the section entitled SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2 it mentions at the bottom of the page (referred by * & **) that there is a 64 bit install version available for both SQL Server & management Studio.
However, under the section entitled SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services SP2, there is no * or **. As far as I can tell, the Advanced services has Reporting Services as well.
So, what I am wondering is, can I specifically download the 64 bit versions of SQL server express & management studio and as well, download just the reporting services part of Advanced Services?
We would like to install Sql 2005 Enterprise Edition (including database engine, reporting service, integration service and analysis service) as a sepearte instance on a server which already has Sql 2000 with reporting services and analysis services. We do not want to disturb the existing sql 2000 setup.
If we do that then what will happen to my earlier sql 2000 reporting service? Will it be upgraded to sql 2005 reporting service? I heard that reporting services are instance unaware application. Where will be the default reporting service database available?
Downloading and installing VS 2008 Express also created a Miscrosoft SQL Server folder. How do I install the SQL Server 2005 Express? The following is what I found from the HELP menu bar of the VS 2008 Express. Where can I find the sqlexpr.exe? TIA,Jeffrey
To install SQL Server Express To begin installation, double-click sqlexpr.exe. Note: SQL Server Express is available as a self-extracting executable file (sqlexpr.exe) from both the Visual Studio 2005 CD and the SQL Server Express Web site. SQLEXPR.EXE installs on x86-based computers and to the 32-bit subsystem (WOW64). For more information, see Hardware and Software Requirements (SQL Server Express)
I had some issues on my server and had to uninstall .Net Framework 2.0, SQL Server 2005 Express, and SQL Express Toolkit. I installed SQL Server 2005 Express and it seemed to be ok.
Then my problems all started when I tried to install SQL Express Toolkit because I needed to install DTS Wizard again, and it errors out and wouldn't let me install it. So I uninstalled everything that's listed above again.
I then tried to install SQL Server 2005 Express again, and on the second from last screen, while its listing all the components and configuring them, I get the following error as it's configuring the last component... which was the SQL Server Database Services.
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup ----------------------------------------------------------- The SQL Server service failed to start. For more information, see the SQL Server Books Online topics, "How to: View SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files" and "Starting SQL Server Manually."
I tried to re-install the SQL Server Express another 7 times wth no luck.
If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it.
I'm getting an error while trying to install SQL Server Express 2005 Express Edition. I'm attaching the log of the installation process here. Please throw some light on the same.

I run setup using GUI. It upgrades all components of the existing installation w/out any problems except the last component. That is, it proceeds with the installation of SQL Server Database Serices and at the end fails to shut down the SQL Server and aborts the installation reporting the following:
"Service 'Computer_NameSQLEXPRESS' could not be stopped. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to stop system services. The error code is (16386)".
I am running Windows XP SP2 with both .NET 2.0 and .NET 3.0 installed on it. I am logged in as a system administrator.
The most puzzling to me things are:
- the setup starts AND STOPS w/out any problems SQL Server Reporting Services and SQL Server VSS Writer (thus finding enough privileges for both).
- the setup starts the SQL Server w/out any problems (thus it finds enough privileges to START A SYSTEM SERVICE) and then fails as described above 'lucking privileges".
During installation before failing the setup displays following:
"Run as Normal User. RANU instance Shutdwon in progress: MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS". The "normal user" puzzles me too, unless the SQL Server itself is meant here.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I can provide the installation log file as well.
In the last step of installing the SQL Server 2005 Express edition I get the following error:
