Hi,
I need to set up a dump of my main database's transaction log to dump every hour but not overwrite until the 8th hour (keeping 7 log dumps). Can anyone tell me how to set up the scheduled tasks for the transaction log dump? Is there anything special I need to do for the main database dump?
Thank you, Laurie

I am testing a procedure to automate the transaction log dump. I am following the steps located in Chapter 22 of the Microsoft SQL Server Administrator's Companion ("Automatic Transaction Log Dumps Using Performance Monitor"). The alert in Performance Monitor appears to be starting when the log is 75% full, but the alert is not firing off the file that contains the dump transaction sql command. For the 'Run Program on Alert' box this is what I have: isql -Ssvrname -Usa -P -id:appsmssqlinndump.sql
The dump.sql file contains: 'dump transaction pubs with no_log'
I have also tried the following 4 steps: 1) Created a SQL Alert Messsage, 2) Created an NT Performance Monitor Threshold Alert to run sqlalrtr to issue a certain error when the pubs log is 75% full, 3) Created a TSQL Task, and 4) Created a SQL Server Alert to run the Task created in step 3. This appears to do the same thing. The Alert is fired off, but the Task is never executed. Note: I am able to execute the task from within the Schedule Tasks Window.
I am using Standard Security with SQL Server 6.5 (sp5a) running on NT4.
Thanks for you help in advance.

Hi,
does anybody know how to automate the loading of incremental transaction dumps. The manual way is to use the "load tran DB with FILE = x" statement.
Since this has to be done in the right sequence and i need to automate this task to keep a second server up to date i like to know if there is a stored procedure
or any other tool which could do the task.
Thanks for your help

Hi!
The purpose is to se history of which user updated, inserted or deleted a row in the database.
Can't seem to find any publications from microsoft on how to parse and interpret the log file.
Any documentation on how the log file is structured?
Is it possible to obtain this information through the system views
I don't want to use triggers.
Thanks

Can anyone tell me where I can find information about why sql server might be executing a stack and/or symptom dump?
That is, what are some of the conditions that might cause this. Every time I try to DBCC DBREINDEX on a certain table, stack
and symptom dumps occur and SQL Server remains incommunicado (can't connect, even locally) until I restart it. I'm going to try to fix the table by using
rename table, create new table (and dependent objects) , transfer data, and toast the original table. No problem, I've done that
before with smashing success. But, if this solves my problem, I'll still be no wiser about what it was that caused the problem in
the first place. Any suggestions, questions, comments, or even jeers would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris

Hello, everyone:
I have a local transaction,
BEGIN TRAN
INSERT Z_Test SELECT STATE_CODE FROM View_STATE_CODE
COMMIT
View_STATE_CODE points to remote SQL server named PROD. There is error when I run this query:
Server: Msg 8501, Level 16, State 1, Line 12
MSDTC on server 'PROD' is unavailable.
Server: Msg 7391, Level 16, State 1, Line 12
The operation could not be performed because the OLE DB provider 'SQLOLEDB' was unable to begin a distributed transaction.
OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'SQLOLEDB' ITransactionJoin::JoinTransaction returned 0x8004d01c].
It looks like remote server is not available inside the local transaction. How to handle that?
Thanks
ZYT

Newbee question: I am trying to use some of the "101" samples in VS 2005 with SQL Server 2005. These samples use SQL server express MDF files.
The error is: "... you cannont open a database that is incompatible with this version of sqlservr.ext. You must re-create the database."
Do I need to install SQL server express? What are the issues with installing express when I am already running SQL Server 2005?
How do I update or "re-create" the express MDF database file in SQL Server 2005?
Thanks!

hello!
i'm an sql server beginer. i was wondering if some of you guys can help
me out. i need for the sql server to be able to read an outside file (just text) and be able to run a script that will insert it in the database. it's a dcc output file. we've tried running this script:
DROP TABLE tests
go
DECLARE @SQLSTR varchar(255)
SELECT @SQLSTR = 'ISQL -E -Q"dbcc checkdb(master)"'
CREATE TABLE tests (Results varchar(255) NOT NULL)
INSERT INTO tests EXEC('master..xp_cmdshell ''ISQL -E -Q"dbcc checkdb(master)"''')
and it's running good but the problem is the results of the dbcc here did not come from a file but directly after executing the dcc command. is there a way to do it?
thank's for the help!

Hello,
I have following situation:
1st thread: start transaction, update some values in table (with (rowlock))
2nd thread: starts select for this record.
I have tried some possibilities with SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL but noone is suitable for me. I would like during such running transaction to have possibility to read but the OLD values (last commited).
Am I able to reach this behaviour with some setting of locks, transaction level?

I still have transactions in use mainly to set isolation levels. There are obviously no update/delete statements in them. I'm pretty sure this will still add rows to the transaction log even though there won't be any writes to the db data files. Is it still a critical best practice to use RAID 1/0 instead of RAID 5 for the logs? Looking to re-use some existing storage rather than buy new ones. Thoughts?

I have an excel file which has dynamic columns
i.e. Col1, Col2, Col3 this week. next week i will have a new Col4 in the sheet. This will keep on adding every week.
My problem is to Unpivot the data
Date 8/2/2013 8/9/2013 8/16/2013
Stock 1,561 1,661 1,761
i.e. the abobe table should become as
Date Stock
8/2/2013 1561
8/9/2013 1661
8/16/2013 1,761
How can I unpivot the dynamic columns given that the columns will keep on increasing every week.

We have poor performance spikes on a drive containing our log file but this is only for reads and seems to be at a time when we run a re-index job. If this is a likely correlation as to poor performance in reading the log file, and what reads are done from a log file.
