Can I use osql to known the database install on a server via 'guest'
account ?
I had over 300 servers with sql server all around France (different
version : 6.5, 7 and 8)
I need to check all database on each servers from my place.
Of course, also it would have been to easy, I don't have all 'sa'
password...
Is that possible to use the 'guest' account to execute a query like
this via osql :
Extract.sql
exec sp_helpdb
Extract.cmd
for /f "usebackq tokens=1 delims=
" %%i IN (ListServer.txt) DO
osql
-S%%i -Uguest -P -dmaster -i"C:ExtractionExtract.sql"

Could I query 'master' with the 'guest' account ?
Or any other ideas how to do this by an other way ?

I need to do a restore similar to the Restore Database in SQL Enterprise Manager using OSQL. I created an app to do the OSQL Run script command and it works fine. Is this the best way to create a setup to restore the database? Any ideas please!!

the original database location was on the D drive on the server
but when i want to restore it to my MSDE it will be in a different path which is C

I run setup using GUI. It upgrades all components of the existing installation w/out any problems except the last component. That is, it proceeds with the installation of SQL Server Database Serices and at the end fails to shut down the SQL Server and aborts the installation reporting the following:
"Service 'Computer_NameSQLEXPRESS' could not be stopped. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to stop system services. The error code is (16386)".
I am running Windows XP SP2 with both .NET 2.0 and .NET 3.0 installed on it. I am logged in as a system administrator.
The most puzzling to me things are:
- the setup starts AND STOPS w/out any problems SQL Server Reporting Services and SQL Server VSS Writer (thus finding enough privileges for both).
- the setup starts the SQL Server w/out any problems (thus it finds enough privileges to START A SYSTEM SERVICE) and then fails as described above 'lucking privileges".
During installation before failing the setup displays following:
"Run as Normal User. RANU instance Shutdwon in progress: MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS". The "normal user" puzzles me too, unless the SQL Server itself is meant here.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I can provide the installation log file as well.

Hi,
I'm having problem installing the Database Server on Windows XP (home).
It shows "Internal Error. Contact Microsoft Technical Support" when I clicked on the "Install Database Server". I'm using SQLServer 2000 Developer Edition. I have already enabled Named Pipes and TCP/IP.
But I can get through the setup screen of "Analysis Services" and "English Query" without any problem. I haven't install Analysis Services or English Query. Do I have to install other software (like the "Analysis Services" or "English Query") before installing the "Database Server"?

I have a problem to in stall my SQL database services.
I use the Microsoft SQL server 2005 on a Microsoft small business server 2003 system.
My system configuration check is oke and i have no problems to install the other services(Analysis,Reporting,Notification and Intergration).
When i install the SQL database services i have this error:
(Error attempting to read from the source install database,

I tried to install the Northwind database into SQl Server Express via the instnwnd.sql script using the command line:
osql -E -i instnwnd.sql
after a time out though I get this message:
"[SQL Native Client]Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL
Server [2].
[SQL Native Client]Login timeout expired
[SQL Native Client]An error has occurred while establishing a connection to
the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by
the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote
connections."
I already granted access to the administrator account on my machine.
Anyone knows what I need to do more?

Hello, I want to install only reporting services on one server, I already did, but i want RS databases to reside on another server.

I want to run a stored procedure, from a .bat file.
Here is line 1 of the .bat file
osql -S SISPROD -d gSchool -E -Q "xSP_Attendance_Post_All_1Day '0708'"
When I run it as a Schedule Task, get
Run-time error '-2147217904...' Procedure 'xSP_Attendance_Post_All_1Day' expects parameter '@sy' which was not supplied.
The '0708' is the @sy parameter.
What is wrong with the command?
The weirder thing is that when I get a command prompt, any osql command gives me this:
'osql' is not recognized as an internal or external command,...'
Unless I run the .bat file -- then I get the same error as the 1st above.
SQL Server is not installed on this server. How does the Scheduled task run osql (although with the 1sterror above)? The task is running as "me", Active Directory user, same as I am logged on to server but cannot run osql at all.

I am on a new task where I don't have Enterprise Manager available and I need to build a database (I have been spoiled on all prior tasks).
I have access to SQL-Server and have OSQL available (and other utilities I don't know how to use).
I have already found that I can access the server using OSQL, but I don't know the rest of the parameters for OSQL or how to use them. I need to build tables, relationships, indices, stored procedures, views, etc.
Could someone point me to some documentation where I can learn how to use OSQL?

I have been trying to install SQL Server 2005 developer version on my second laptop IBM Thinkpad Windows XP PRO, for the first time. All other components installed successfully except the database. I 've tried selecting the named instance and default instance it didn't make any difference. I have a Admin role on the laptop and as a service id I selected my user id. password and domain. Hi I am trying to make a backup of my SQL server 2005, used with Web Developer 2005 Express, in osql.exe (can't find any other way of doing it). I get the error that "under the default settings SQL server does not allow remote connections".I connect to it fine from the Web Developer 2005 and my application . I followed another post's instructions where I enabled the TCP/IP and named pipes for "Protocols for SQLEXPRESS", but didn't work. In fact when I changed TCP/IP properties/ IP Addresses/TCP Dynamic port to nothing , and TCP Port to 1357, the server wouldn't start again !! (not doin THAT again)Regards Amanda

I have a fresh install of sqlExpress and Management Studio Express on my test server. I want to restore my master database from backup.
From the command prompt I set the Sqlservr -s SQLEXPRESS -m
Then I opened another comand prompt and ran my SQLCMD script to restore the Master Database.

Hi, i´m new to SQL SERVER, I've been using Oracle and MySql without problems so far.
I'm having problems to connect to SQL SERVER on my local machine.

I can connect via command line, but from Visual Studio can´t connect to SQL SERVER
Sometimes I got this error:

And sometimes something about enabling remote connections in SQL SERVER , but the server is in the local machine.
what´s suppose to be the name of my server? localhost?
what am I doing wrong, ?
I have no problems to connect to Oracle and mysql with Visual Studio.

Hi,
I have a script that performs an unattended installation of SQL Server and works fine.
However, if I un-install via the control panel all the files are removed apart from the databases that are created by me when SQl server was installed. This is good and ensures data is not deleted.
The files left over are in the following directory:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData
and contains:
MyDatabase.mdf
MyDatabase_log.LDF
The problem I have is after performing the re-installtion of SQL server (unattended) I am unable to create a new database with the same name (in this instance called "myDatabase").
The actual files are physically there so this is the reason a new database with the same name cannot be creacted.
Again this is ok again because it ensures I cannot overwrite existing data. However I am unable to re-attach this database to SQl server so I can continue to use it!
The question is:
How do I make this database usable again after an unattended install? Is there a parameter I am missing?

I searched this forum for answers and I found one solution where it was said that Remote connections for TCP and Named Pipes needs to be enabled. I have them enabled, but I still get this error. I had working SQL server before, but I had to uninstall it. Now after installing ti again I started to get this error.
Anything else besides disabled remote connections cause this problem? I'm trying a local connection. I heard elsewhere that this could be firewall related, but shouldn't it use local connection always when I try to connect it with sqlcmd and no other parameters given?

I am currently running Windows XP Professional Service Pack2. It already has MSDE & SQL Server 2000 installed (although I just uninstalled MSDE in the vain hope that it might present the installer with a more straightforward upgrade).
I have tried installing with the default instance & a new instance (I don't really care - I just need to install the darn thing). I just want the basic database & Books On-line, nothing fancy.

I suppose an error dialog (or log message) that actually told you what is wrong and then what to do is too much to ask for. (Or an installer than just copied all the files into place). :(

If our SQL Server is not part of a domain, can "Guest" users still connect to the SQL server?
What we are experiencing is -- when a drive is mapped to the server connectivity is fine.
But, without the drive mapping, the SQL connections cannot be made.
Thoughts, Ideas,
(hopefully without adding unique logins for each user at the server)

In SQL2K5 guest user can not be dropped from ANY databases. How ever we can use the following command to disable it.
USE <Database Name>
GO
REVOKE CONNECT FROM GUEST
GO
How to find in a DB, whether guest user is disable or not, using TSQL?

Nel database "master" ho mappato, per errore, l'utente "guest" su unutente sql "XXX" creato in SQLServer.Questo tipo di impostazione non permette più di aver accesso conl'utente anonimo "guest" (mappato su null) al db (con autorizzazionilimitate al ruolo public).Ho provato sia da EM che con le varie SP a rimuovere l'utente, amapparlo su un'altro utente, ... ma non sono riuscito a ripristinarela situazione di partenza.Mi servirebbe una idea per non dover effettuare il backup di tutti idb, disinstallare SQLServer, reinstallare SQLServer e fare il restoredi tutti i db (soluzione possibile ma che tengo come ultimaspiaggia!!).Grazie
