Why Can't I Get SQL Express 2005 And VB Studio Express 2005/2008to Work Together?

This is what I have done.
1. Installed VB.NET IDE 2008 and SQL Server Compact 2005. IDE requires upgrade of database to 3.0 version which I allowed it to do. After the database was upgraded, I did an amount of coding work in the IDE and then tried to go back to do more database work in SQL. However the database then could not be opened in SQL Server Compact 2005. An error said that because it had been upgraded, it could not be read. It was requiring me to run 'upgrade.exe'. I had no idea what this meant and could find no upgrade available online.
2. Removed VB.NET IDE 2008 and installed 2005 instead. However, the file extension on the SQL Server Compact database is .sdf, but the IDE is requiring a .mdf extension. I have tried everything I can think of to get it to save or to have the desired extension, but I cannot.
Questions:
1. Do SQL Express 2005 and VB Studio Express 2008 work together?
2. If so, how?
It seems as though application each requires a different version of the database. If the database is usable in one, it is not usable in another.

Dec 31, 2005I have first installed SQL Server 2005 and after that SQL Express 2005. In machine.config I set the LocalSqlServer, needed for membership and stuff, to my SQL Server (using aspnet_regsql.exe tool). But because I saw some interesting articles with sample code that use .mdf files I also installed SQL Express.But the problem is that every time I want to execute something against .mdf file or want to see the tables in server explorer I get this error message:Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.I also stopped SQL Server process but that didn't do the trick. What do I have to do to get these 2 working on my laptop?

I'm about to download the VWD ASP.NET 2.0 with SQL Express 2005, but i currently have Visual studio.net 1.1 and SQL Server 2000 installed on my PC, XP Pro.
Has anyone had problems with this or are they happy to run along side one another without over writing projects already created in the older versions?

Doing this also includes replacing .Net Framework 1.1 with 2.0, could that cause any disturbances to the already existing SQL Server 2000 ?
(None of these two databases are heavy production databases)

I have an SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition installed. My machine has a Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit and Visual Studio 2008.
My application is already working with Sql Server Standard Edition but I need to test it with SQL Express 2005.
If I install SQL Server Express 2005 in the same machine will it cause any damage to my Standard Edition already installed ????
That is can I install both SQL Server Express 2005 and Standard in the same machine ????
How can I address the different instances of SQL Server ????

Can't Connect To SQL Server 2005 Express From Another Machine
Aug 1, 2006I know there have been many posts made on this subject; however, despite the resources available, I have not been able to get this to work! I've spent time working on this here and there over the last couple of months only resulting in frustration. I am finally posting to solicit help for my situation to figure out what is wrong with my SQL Server or firewall configuration.
Two machines connected to a router, one wireless, one wired. Both have SQL Server Express and the Management Studio tools installed. From either machine I can connect to its local SQL Server Express instance.
I have enabled Shared Memory, Named Pipes, TCP/IP, and VIA in the SQL Server Configuration Manager. (BTW what is VIA?)
I have added sqlsrvr.exe and sqlbrowser.exe to my Windows Firewall exceptions. I have tried disabling Windows Firewall. One of the machines is configured as DMZ in the router configuration.
Please, someone offer up some brilliant diagnostic steps I am missing to expose what is wrong in my setup and make this work... Thank you!

I have a PC running the 64 bit version of vista home premium (will be soon upgrading to ultimate).
On the download page http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-au/express/bb410792.aspx for SQL Server Express under the section entitled SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2 it mentions at the bottom of the page (referred by * & **) that there is a 64 bit install version available for both SQL Server & management Studio.
However, under the section entitled SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services SP2, there is no * or **. As far as I can tell, the Advanced services has Reporting Services as well.
So, what I am wondering is, can I specifically download the 64 bit versions of SQL server express & management studio and as well, download just the reporting services part of Advanced Services?

The problem is that I developed an application in asp.net (with VS2003) that use an SQL server 2005 express database. What I want to know is if I install SQL server 2005 express, is the backup will still work? I mean that the 2005 express wont upgrade sql 2000? What do I have to do to make it works?

I have Vista Ultimate installed and within Vista .NET Framework 3.0 is installed as a part of the operating system so I can't remove 3.0
Now for MS SQL Server 2005 Express I need .NET Framework 2.0 and the SQL Server 2005 doesn't work with .NET Framework 3.0
Can't install 2.0, get the message that 3.0 is already installed.
Is there another version of SQL Server that works with .NET Framework 3.0 and runs under Vista Ultimate?

Trigger Work In VS Explorer - Not In Debug App - SQL Express 2005
May 6, 2008OK I am really going nuts here. I have a trigger that will work if I insert a row using SQL MGMT Studio or VS DB explorer, but it will not insert using the tableadapter.update() command.
What is also strange is that I have to execute the query in the VS DB Explorer or SSMSE to get them to fill in the default values (trigger).
No matter what they don't work in the debug application:

Mar 3, 2006We are new to SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. We are going to develope a solution for one of our client and we have to decide on which database to use for the solution. Client wanted to have a low cost solution. Thus we were not in a position to push them for SQL Sever 2000.
In the process, we also thought of having MySQL as one of the option. Another option we have is to use SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.
We wanted to know if SQL Server 2005 Express Edition can be used with Visual Studion 2003 (Ver 1.1) or it can only be used with Visual Studio 2005 (Ver 2.0)?

May 9, 2006I am currently downloading the mega-sized files for SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and was wondering if I was going to be able to install it onto my workstation alongside the SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition? Was hoping someone could advise. I did browse for an answer, but have not come across it yet. I know I'll find out once my download is complete, but that could be awhile :)

I am suspecting the binarie may be of 64bit.. How do we check the binaries are 32 bit and 64 bit software

How can apply SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 to update this existing instance?
Currently, if I run this query:

I get the following:

I was wondering if there was any white papers on the migration part from microsoft?
Apparently the situation is like this
Currently installed MOSS 2007 in a testing pc as application server. This application server will refer another testing database server which running SQL Server 2005.
Now, wanted to move this 2 temporary server into another 2 new servers.
Correct me if I'm wrong, it cannot be done by using image like Norton Ghost due to difference hardware spec.
So, if I install another fresh copy of MOSS2007 & SQL server 2005 in that 2 new servers, how can I migrate the contents, documents, etc from the testing database server?
It would be great if someone can show me the links to kb article. Thanks

Hi,
I'm trying to learn some VB programming with the VB 2005 Express Absolute Beginner Series video tutorials (which I think is great) and have come across a problem that I can't solve.
When I follow the instructions in Lesson 9 (Databinding Data to User Interface Controls) my application will display the data from the database correctly and I can edit it (and as long as the debugger is running the data remains changed). However, the changes won't propagate back to the database. I don't get any error messages but after I edit the data, save (with the save button on the BindingNavigator toolbar), and end debugging the data in my database remains unchanged. When I use a MessageBox to show how many rows where edited/updated in the
Me.myTableTableAdapter.Update(Me.myDatabaseDataSet.myTable)
I get the correct number back. I'm sure the problem is not due to coding errors since I've also tried running the accompanying Lesson 9 project file that can be downloaded from MSDN and the problem persists.
I'm using Windows XP SP2, SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and VB 2005 Express Edition. I've tried installing SQL Server 2005 Express with a number of different settings, including default settings, but it doesn't make any difference.
Would greatly appreciate any feedback on this as I'm keen to resolve this problem so I can get on with the next tutorial lesson.
