How To Handle Max Row Size

Dec 31, 2004

Hi,

I have a table with one field set at nvarchar (4000)
This is sometimes not big enough and I get an error that the max row size has been reached.

How do people handle the error when the max row size is reached and gracefully inform the user?

Also, should I really be using Ntext instead, would this be better - is there a performance penalty?

Much obliged.

Finding Database Size In SQL Express

May 9, 2006

Our system guy wants me to find out just exactly how much room is being taken up by the SQL Express databases (I am using two). I am not sure how to do this. Is there any way to find the size, or, lacking that, how many records overall? We will probably need to move up to SQL 2005 soon, but he needs to figure out the memory requirements, etc.

Thanks,

Michael

How To Handle Database Transaction Within Multiple Web Forms?

Dec 12, 2007

I have a asp.net 2.0 web application. In one of the modules I have following scenario. In the UI there are 3 pages to take the input from the user. On the 1st page, we are inserting data in the master table and with the same we are beginning new sql transaction with the isolation level READ UNCOMMITTED. so that uncommited master table data can be read.  Master table has also has 4 detail tables. Then the user is navigated to 2nd and then to 3rd page where the user can enter multiple records in the detail tables. And only after finishing on the 3rd page, the transaction is commited.
I want to ask that is it the right way of doing this kind of functionality?
And is there any other way of doing this?

Table Size And Database Size

Mar 2, 2008

Hi,
i use this script that show me the size of each table and do the sum of all the table size.

SELECT
X.[name],
REPLACE(CONVERT(varchar, CONVERT(money, X.[rows]), 1), '.00', '') AS [rows],
REPLACE(CONVERT(varchar, CONVERT(money, X.[reserved]), 1), '.00', '') AS [reserved],
REPLACE(CONVERT(varchar, CONVERT(money, X.[data]), 1), '.00', '') AS [data],
REPLACE(CONVERT(varchar, CONVERT(money, X.[index_size]), 1), '.00', '') AS [index_size],
REPLACE(CONVERT(varchar, CONVERT(money, X.[unused]), 1), '.00', '') AS [unused]
FROM
(SELECT
CAST(object_name(id) AS varchar(50)) AS [name],
SUM(CASE WHEN indid < 2 THEN CONVERT(bigint, [rows]) END) AS [rows],
SUM(CONVERT(bigint, reserved)) * 8 AS reserved,
SUM(CONVERT(bigint, dpages)) * 8 AS data,
SUM(CONVERT(bigint, used) - CONVERT(bigint, dpages)) * 8 AS index_size,
SUM(CONVERT(bigint, reserved) - CONVERT(bigint, used)) * 8 AS unused
FROM sysindexes WITH (NOLOCK)
WHERE sysindexes.indid IN (0, 1, 255)
AND sysindexes.id > 100
AND object_name(sysindexes.id) <> 'dtproperties'
GROUP BY sysindexes.id WITH ROLLUP) AS X
ORDER BY X.[name]

the problem is that the sum of all tables is not the same size when i make a full database backup.
example of this is when i run this query against my database i see a sum of 111,899 KB that they are 111MB,but when
i do full backup to that database the size of this full backup is 1.5GB,why is that and where this size come from?

How Do I Scale A Database To Handle A Billion Simultaneous Users?

Mar 30, 2007

Hi everyone. I hope that my question isn't too broad, but here it goes...

I am trying to figure out the best way to scale a SQL Server database so that it can handle a billion simultaneous users querying the same tables, and can easily scale to handle many billions of simultaneous users. The database must also have 999.99% availability. The number of licences and amount of hardware needed is not an issue.

Thanks in advance.

Error Log Peppered With --&&> 'The Conversation Handle Is Missing. Specify A Conversation Handle.'

Dec 3, 2007

Hi

I'm using service broker and keep getting errors in the log even though everythig is working as expected

SQL Server 2005
Two databases
Two end points - 1 in each database
Two stored procedures:
SP1 is activated when a message enters the sending queue. it insert a new row in a table
SP2 is activated when a response is sent from the receiving queue. it cleans up the sending queue.

I have a table with an update trigger
In that trigger, if the updted row meets a certain condition a dialogue is created and a message is sent to the sending queue.
I know that SP1 and SP2 are behaving properly because i get the expected result.
Sp1 is inserteding the expected data in the table
SP2 is cleaning up the sending queue.

In the Sql Server log however i'm getting errors on both of the stored procs.
error #1
The activated proc <SP 1 Name> running on queue Applications.dbo.ffreceiverQueue output the following: 'The conversation handle is missing. Specify a conversation handle.'

error #2
The activated proc <SP 2 Name> running on queue ADAPT_APP.dbo.ffsenderQueue output the following: 'The conversation handle is missing. Specify a conversation handle.'

I would appreceiate anybody's help into why i'm getting this. have i set up the stored procs in correctly?

i can provide code of the stored procs if that helps.

thanks.

SQL Server Express - Size Limitations

Mar 13, 2007

Hi,

I am currently using the SQL Server Express edition with the intention of upgrading to the full version in the future.

I know the size limitation on the Database is 4GB - however does this include the log file as well? Nothing I read says the log file is included however if anyone can give the definitive answer I would be grateful.

Also my log file maximum is set to 2GB what issues are there with reducing this to say 500MB? I assume SQL Server automatically drops the old log data to add new data when the maximum is reached.

Thanks for your help.

Andrew

Sql Server 2005 Vs Express Size Limits

Feb 28, 2006

I've been developing a vb app with sql server 2005 and had planned to use express as the client server so the db could be distributed with the app. After importing 21 csv text files, I realized that I have way too much data. My understanding is that sqlexpress can only work with max 4gb database.

The 21 csv files (total 925mb) brought the db size up to 1.5gb and I still have at least 250 more files to go. Obviously, I need a different approach. What are the size limitations of the non express version of sql server 2005? Any suggestions on the best approach for this type of situation?

Exceeding SQL 2005 Express' 4GB Databse Size Limit...

Sep 5, 2006

Okay, I know the maximum size limit on a database in SQL 2005 Express is 4GB, but what happens when you exceed that limit? I can't seem to find much info on that topic. What kind of error return would you get from a stored procedure attempting to do an insert that will exceed the 4GB limitation? Also what factors go into that maximum size, factors that might not be completely obvious of course?

Error While Storing A Zip File With Size More Than 1MB In MS SQL Server 2005 Express

Aug 9, 2007

I want to store a Zip file as a BLOB, but I get an error:
"File 'C:<path of mdf file> ' appears to have been truncated by the operating system. Expected size is 2560KB but actual size is 1536KB "
whenever the BLOB exceeds 1MB.

Any suggestions? How can I store larger .ZIP files to the Database?
I am using MS SQL 2005 Express and the data type that I gave for the column to store Blob is "varbinary(MAX)".

I am inserting byte array in to this field.
It works fine for a zip file less than 1MB but as soon as the zipped file size increases beyond 1MB, lots of error pop-up and then the database is not readable. Its says that, the data in the data base may have been corrupted...

Conversation Handle Reuse And Conversation Handle XXX Not Found

Jan 18, 2008

We have implemented our service broker architecture using conversation handle reuse per MS/Remus's recommendations. We have all of the sudden started receiving the conversation handle not found errors in the sql log every hour or so (which makes perfect sense considering the dialog timer is set for 1 hour). My question is...is this expected behavior when you have employed conversation recycling? Should you expect to see these messages pop up every hour, but the logic in the queuing proc says to retry after deleting from your conversation handle table so the messages is enqueued as expected?

Second question...i think i know why we were not receiving these errors before and wanted to confirm this theory as well. In the queuing proc I was not initializing the variable @Counter to 0 so when it came down to the retry logic it could not add 1 to null so was never entering that part of the code...I am guessing with this set up it would actually output the error to the application calling the queueing proc and NOT into the SQL error logs...is this a correct assumption?

I have attached an example of one of the queuing procs below:

Code Block
DECLARE @conversationHandle UNIQUEIDENTIFIER,
@err int,
@counter int,
@DialogTimeOut int,
@Message nvarchar(max),
@SendType int,
@ConversationID uniqueidentifier
select @Counter = 0 -- THIS PART VERY IMPORTANT LOL :)
select @DialogTimeOut = Value
from dbo.tConfiguration with (nolock)
where keyvalue = 'ConversationEndpoints' and subvalue = 'DeleteAfterSec'
WHILE (1=1)
BEGIN
-- Lookup the current SPIDs handle
SELECT @conversationHandle = [handle] FROM tConversationSPID with (nolock)
WHERE spid = @@SPID and messagetype = 'TestQueueMsg';
IF @conversationHandle IS NULL
BEGIN
BEGIN DIALOG CONVERSATION @conversationHandle
FROM SERVICE [InitiatorQueue_SER]
TO SERVICE 'ReceiveTestQueue_SER'
ON CONTRACT [TestQueueMsg_CON]
WITH ENCRYPTION = OFF;
BEGIN CONVERSATION TIMER ( @conversationHandle )
TIMEOUT = @DialogTimeOut
-- insert the conversation in the association table
INSERT INTO tConversationSPID
([spid], MessageType,[handle])
VALUES
(@@SPID, 'TestQueueMsg', @conversationHandle);

SEND ON CONVERSATION @conversationHandle
MESSAGE TYPE [TestQueueMsg] (@Message)

END
ELSE IF @conversationHandle IS NOT NULL
BEGIN
SEND ON CONVERSATION @conversationHandle
MESSAGE TYPE [TestQueueMsg] (@Message)
END
SELECT @err = @@ERROR;
-- if succeeded, exit the loop now
IF (@err = 0)
BREAK;
SELECT @counter = @counter + 1;
IF @counter > 10
BEGIN
-- Refer to http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms164086.aspx for severity levels
EXEC spLogMessageQueue 20002, 8, 'Failed to SEND on a conversation for more than 10 times. Error %i.'
BREAK;
END
-- We tried on the said conversation, but failed
-- remove the record from the association table, then
-- let the loop try again
DELETE FROM tConversationSPID
WHERE [spid] = @@SPID;
SELECT @conversationHandle = NULL;
END;

Database File Is Larger Than The Configured Max Database Size.

Feb 18, 2008

Hello,

I am developing a smart device application with Visual Studio .Net 2005 and SQL Server Compact Edition database. And also using merge replication to synchronize the data from the mobile device to the SQL Server.

My database size is around 350MB. So when I am trying to synchronize this is the error message that I get.
" The database file is larger than the configured maximum database size. The setting takes effect on the first concurrent database connection only.[Required Max Database size ( in MB; 0 if unknown)=129].

I tried changing the Max database size in the connection string and my connection string looks as follows and still did not have any luck.

connstr= "Data Source=Storage CardItems.sdf;Max Database Size=500;"

Any help regarding this would be appreciated.

Thank you

SQL Server Management Studio Express, Database Explorer In Visual Web Developer Express...which To Use???

Apr 16, 2007

When I downloaded/started using Visual Web Developer I was under the impression that I needed to install SQL Server Management Studio Express in order to create/manage databases, and to provide the engine to access the data.
 Since then I have found tutorials and have successfully created/used databases solely from within Visual Web Developer. I'm assuming that Visual Web Developer includes a database engine, much like the webserver that is included. (This is an awesome thing).
 When I tried to upload my web application with database to my production server, the database would not work, it started working after I installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the server.
 Is it my understanding that you need SQL Server Management Studio Express if you do not have Visual Web Developer Express installed in order to provide the data access engine?
Also, I am unable to "attach" my Visual Web Developer Express created database to SQL Server Management Studio Express. Are there any posts that provide more information about this topic?

The only reason I'm asking is that I have extra whitespace on the end of my text fields, and I thought ANSI_PADDING was turned on. I do not see the option in Visual Web Developer Express, but have found it in SQL Server Management Studio Express.

Database Connection: Mapped Network Drive (VC++ Express, MSSQL SMS Express, XP)

Sep 8, 2007

Hi

I have VC++ express and MSSQL SMS express and have an application working nicely locally. The Data explorer and data connections part works really easily.

Now, I want to make the application available to my home network.

I mapped the drive where the database is and called it Z: so I could put my "release" on my other network PC and assumed it would find Z: if I mapped the shared network drive on that machine and called it Z:

But: I can't even add the mapped connection on the local machine, I get:

The file "Z:databasescalorie.mdf" is on a network path not supported for database files. An attempt to attach.....etc"

It works fine on the original F drive.......

Am I approaching this the wrong way. How should I distribute to network PCs?

thanks hopefully
David

I am a newbie so i apologies beforehand for any mistakes i make on this forum.
Anyway, i created an asp.net website using the MS Visual Web developer tool. This has a couple of SQL SERVER databases within it.
I then latervinstalled the SQL SERVER management studio express in order to manage the SQL SERVER DBs that i had as part of my website but they do not appear within the management studio db list.
As this is the express version, is there anyway of importing the existing SQL SERVER dbs that i have to the management studio so i can manage them from there?

Error Creating First SQL Express Database Via VWD 2005 Express: User Does Not Have Permission To Perform This Action

Aug 18, 2006

I get an error dialog when I try to create a new SQL database, both via the Add New Item dialog and the property wizard of a new SqlDataSource control. The error is:

Local Database File:

User does not have permission to perform this action.

I've searched for help with this.

I ensured the App_Data folder exists and I added the local ASP.NET account to the group that have R/W access to it (although the RO flag is in an unchangeable tri-state on the folder).
The SQL Server Express error log is clean and indicates full functionality.
Everything is running locally.
No VWD installation errors.

Any ideas?

Thank you!

Database Size

Mar 1, 2002

We have a SQL server database most time for read only because the data source comes from another database( which is not SQL server database, now it is about 2G). Every day we have a job running as following:
Step 0. extra the data from another database, and create plain text files for each table for BCP job.
Step 1. drop all of the index
Step 2. truncate all of the tables.
Step 3. BCP in all of the data from plain text file.
Step 4. create all of the index again
Step 5. shirnk the database.

Everything runs fine but the database grows 1 G from yesterday's database. I am sure we do not have so much data entry in one day.
Any one can give some suggestion?
I wonder if I need do shirnk the database or shirnk the data file before create the index.
How can know how much size for all of the index file?
Thank you very much.
