I run the following statement and it will not update beyond 7 million plus rows and I have about 38 million to complete. I keep checking updated row counts and after 1/2 day it's still the same so I know something is wrong because it was rolling through no problem when I initiated it. I need to complete ASAP so it's adding to my frustration. The 'Acct_Num_CH' field is an encrypted field (fyi).

I think it's because of data type, since id is Integer and newStrID is string. What should I do to make it work?
I'm updating the name data in a large user database with the following UPDATE statement. The staging table was bulk loaded from a flat file and contains 10 million records. The production table (Recipients) contains 15 million records. This worked correctly but this single update statement took an entire ten hours to run which is way too long. While it was running the server was clearly 100% disk bound. CPU activity was near nothing. We've just upgraded RAM from 1GB to 2GB but we expect data sizes to grow significantly and we can't keep adding RAM. Absolutely nothing else is running on this server. Any ideas how I can optimize this?

Everything I've heard on the subject suggests you change the index scans to index seeks. How do I do this?

I have a SQL update statement that updates some user names, however, the user names exceed the length of the data type. Currently, for the column username the data type is set to nvarchar (8).
How can I change that to nvarchar(10) in a SQL Update statement?

General questions please: Is it necessary, to issue some sort of command, to 'commit' data to a SQL express database after a INSERT or UPDATE sql command?
I'm getting strange behavior where the data is not refreshed unless i exit my app and re-enter. In other words, i can run a sql command , the data is apparantly saved (because i get no errors) then if i refresh a data set or do a sql select query the data that i expect to return is not there.
Im fairly new to SQL express (and SQL server generally) so i dont know if its my coding or i need to switch some 'feature' on/off or not.

I'm trying to get my feet wet with creating a Sql Server project within VS 2005 and I have the using statements below present but when I compile I get errors stating that SqlContext, SQLPipe, and SQLCommand do not exist in the current context. I really can't see what is wrong as i have placed the semi colon it wanted at the end of the string.
I am currently having this problem with gridview and detailview. When I drag either onto the page and set my select statement to pick from one table and then update that data through the gridview (lets say), the update works perfectly. My problem is that the table I am pulling data from is mainly foreign keys. So in order to hide the number values of the foreign keys, I select the string value columns from the tables that contain the primary keys. I then use INNER JOIN in my SELECT so that I only get the data that pertains to the user I am looking to list and edit. I run the "test query" and everything I need shows up as I want it. I then go back to the gridview and change the fields which are foreign keys to templates. When I edit the templates I bind the field that contains the string value of the given foreign key to the template. This works great, because now the user will see string representation instead of the ID numbers that coinside with the string value. So I run my webpage and everything show up as I want it to, all the data is correct and I get no errors. I then click edit (as I have checked the "enable editing" box) and the gridview changes to edit mode. I make my changes and then select "update." When the page refreshes, and the gridview returns, the data is not updated and the original data is shown. I am sorry for so much typing, but I want to be as clear as possible with what I am doing. The only thing I can see being the issue is that when I setup my SELECT and FROM to contain fields from multiple tables, the UPDATE then does not work. When I remove all of my JOIN's and go back to foreign keys and one table the update works again. Here is the problem. When I run usp_Insert I get the following: Error 266 Transaction count after EXECUTE indicates that a COMMIT or ROLLBACK TRANSACTION statement is missing. Previous count = 1, current count = 0.
This refers to the usp_GetNewOrderNumber that is called inside the other proc as shown above.
The problem does not happen if I put each statement in usp_Insert in its own try/catch. transaction statements.
Maybe it has something to do with the rollback call in the usp_getneworder.
What do I need to do to get rid of this. problem and still run these within one try/catch trans statement set.

It appears to update only the first qualifying row. The trace shows a row count of one when there are multiple qualifying rows in the table. This problem does not exist in JDBC 2000.
I'm writing a fairly involved stored procedure. In this Stored Procedure, I have an update statement, followed by a select statement. The results of the select statement should be effected by the previous update statement, but its not. When the stored procedure is finish, the update statement seemed to have worked though, so it is working.
I suspect I need something, like a GO statement, but that doesnt seem to work for a stored procedure. Can anyone offer some assistance?
In the SSIS Analysis Services processing task, I was wondering if anyone knows why some dimensions do not have the Process Update option in the list of options for processing them? If there is only Process Full, Process Data, and Unprocess, I am not sure how I can do incremental updates without scripting.
Also, will this affect the cubes if a full process is performed?

I've got a report that is using a cube as a data source and I can't get the report to show all the data. Only data at the lowest level of the cube is displayed. The problem is that most of the data I'm concerned with is at higher levels. There's no problem with the MDX. I get the correct results when I run the query.
I'm using a table to show the results. I've also tried a matrix, but I get the same results. I'm using SSRS 2005 and SSAS 2000.
Anyone have experience with this? Am I missing something simple?

We found that some of the data field become 'null' after the load action finished, if we load the same data again, problem disappeared, we can't 100% reproduce this issue each time, we don't know why, Anybody here can help us to solve this issue or give us some clue?
Hello all, I am using the Import Wizard to pull in data from an Excel spreadsheet. One column in particular SQL Server sees as a float data type but it contains varchar data. So I change this in the wizard but some of these values are missing when I select * from Sheet1$ in SQL Server 2005. Any ideas why this would happen? I have formatted the particular column as text in Excel.
Using Business Inteligence I have created a report that runs off a stored procedure. This report has three parameters. For this example we will say the parameters are A, B and C. parameters B and C can be passed a NULL. The Stored procedure when run on the SQL Server 2005 runs fine and gives me the expected data. I then created a report based off this Stored procedure. If I run the report and pass it parameter A and either Parameter B or C it works fine. If I run the report and only pass it parameter A then I do not get any data. I know the Stored procedure works because as I saind when I run it on the Server it runs fine. So the problem must be in the Report somewher, but I can't figure out where. I have other reports that use stored procedure and some with parameters that I pass a null value to and they work fine. But this one report is not pulling the data.
Has anybody heard of this before or have any ideas?
I found a big problem. When we do a report it seems to be missing records. I am sure they should not be getting filtered out, given the filter in the report. I ran profiler on the SQL box it was pulling the data from, and it seems that they are all there. If I sort by the ID number of the records, then find the place it should be several are missing. But If I change the filter so that it filters everything but those records they show up. How could adding a filter cause more records to show up?
I faced a problem. I found all data/records of tables in a few databases were missing yesterday. I don't know what had happened. Can anyone tell me why? Can anyone tell me how to trace the root of the problem. Any log files I can trace? I fear it will happen again. My server is sql2000 and run on win server 2000.
I have a sql 2000 database in which reports are generated on a monthly basis from the data inside on of my tables. The reports have been working fine, until some of the rows seemed to have disappered!
I know the data use to be in the table, since it is showing on the old reports, however, when I try to pull that same data, it is not in the database at all.
Does anyone have any ideas on what could have caused this or how I can resolve??
