Can Co-installations Of MS SQL 2005 Express And Oracle 10g XE Database Server Interfere With MS SQL?

Feb 24, 2007

Hi -

I may not sound desparate, but I really am. I have spent many days now trying to install and re-install Microsoft SQL 2005 Express. I still cannot connect to the database! I have read this forum and tried various suggestions, like setting the remote connections and TCP/IP + Named Pipes. Still doesnt work!

The environment is Dell Dimension 24000 (I86) with WinXPPro.

Out of desparation, I downloaded and installed Oracle 10g XE. It works just fine !

My question is: Does the Oracle database server interfere with connecting to the Microsoft SQL 2005 Express server ?

Also, I notice that there are an awful lot of questions posted on this Forum concerning just getting your software up and running. Are there that many stupid folks out there like myself, or has this application been released prematurely ?

Visual Studio And SQL Server Express Installations

Sep 19, 2007

They say that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing again and again while expecting a different outcome.
I must be going insane.

To top it off, the first time I tried to enter this message the post failed.

I installed visual studio 2005 and SQL express in the spring and began working with them. Life was good. I got distracted for several months and when I went back in I saw the 2008 beta 2 versions of VS and VWD. I uninstalled everything and installed the new versions, but kept having problems with missing links in the help files. I am a newbie, so the help files were important to me so I decided to go back to the old versions.

I deleted everything again, used the MSI cleanup utility to make sure everything was deleted and tried to reinstall the 2005 versions. At one point I got SQL server installed, but had to use a different (besides SQLexpress) instance name and was unable to link it with VWD. I have repeatedly uninstalled and reinstalled (maybe a dozen times) while trying various means of deleting file contents and under the programs/apdata and Microsoft SQL directories and in various sequences to no avail. The latest message is below along with the end of the log file.

Does anyone know a good hosting vendor for the visual studio authoring environment? (just half kidding)

Thanks for any help ... bill

SQL Express Interfere With Currently Running MSDE On A Webserver?

Jan 17, 2007

Currently I am running MSDE on a webserver. The MSDE was installed by a software package for web survey's. I am wondering if SQL express will interfere with this installation? Would I be better to install MySQL instead?

The problem I am trying to solve is simply giving a web developer some database space so that he can connect his web app to store some data. I'm kind of a n00b at this so I thought SQL express would be the best route. If I'm headed in the wrong direction can someone point me the right way?

Cheers!

SQL Server 2005 SP1 Installations Issues.

Dec 1, 2006

Hi all.

Any assistance regarding this would be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to intall SP1 on SQL Server 2005 and am experiencing some difficulties with regards to Authentiction modes.

I have tried to use Windows Authetication for All instances and it states that the account information could not be verified for one or more services. I only have one instance which is the default and have Database Services and Reporting services listed in the Products text box. I have also tried using SQL Server Authentication using the password of a SQL Server account but am still experiencing problems.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Edited Data Won't Propagate Back To The Database (VB 2005 Express && SQL Server 2005 Express)

Dec 11, 2006

Hi,

I'm trying to learn some VB programming with the VB 2005 Express Absolute Beginner Series video tutorials (which I think is great) and have come across a problem that I can't solve.

When I follow the instructions in Lesson 9 (Databinding Data to User Interface Controls) my application will display the data from the database correctly and I can edit it (and as long as the debugger is running the data remains changed). However, the changes won't propagate back to the database. I don't get any error messages but after I edit the data, save (with the save button on the BindingNavigator toolbar), and end debugging the data in my database remains unchanged. When I use a MessageBox to show how many rows where edited/updated in the

Me.myTableTableAdapter.Update(Me.myDatabaseDataSet.myTable)

I get the correct number back. I'm sure the problem is not due to coding errors since I've also tried running the accompanying Lesson 9 project file that can be downloaded from MSDN and the problem persists.

I'm using Windows XP SP2, SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and VB 2005 Express Edition. I've tried installing SQL Server 2005 Express with a number of different settings, including default settings, but it doesn't make any difference.

Would greatly appreciate any feedback on this as I'm keen to resolve this problem so I can get on with the next tutorial lesson.

Thanks,
Ieyasu

Confused About MSSQL Express Installations

May 21, 2006

I have this confusion because as I am trying to install "SQL Server Management Studio Express", the installers said I already have it.

Q1. Do I need it if I already have SQL Server Management Studio for Server 2005?

Q2.

How many ways to have SQL Express installed on your PC?

- Seperate downloads

- Visual Studio 2005 Retail

- SQL Server 2005

In that regards, will all methods are basically install the same set of components into the machine?

Q3. I don't find any relevant item in the "Add or Remove Programs" regarding to SQL Express.

Is that because SQLExpress is just an database instance not a application item?

Q4. Where are the files of Express in the file system?

I saw in c:Program filesMicrosoft SQL Server, a few directories like

80, 90, MSSQL.1, MSSQL.2, MSSQL.3, MSSQL.3, MSSQL.4

Which one of those belongs to SQL Express and which belongs to SQL Server 2005?

Is the directory structure identical with other types of installation (standalone and VS IDE)?

Thanks

Stanley

How To Cosolidate Databases Of SQL Express From Multiple Installations?

Nov 6, 2006

1. install a SQL Express instance such as myexpress;

2. create some databases with tables such as db1 and db2;

3. Reinstall SQL Express with the same instance name "myexpress". I assume we need reinstall SQL Express myexpress again becuase of bad operations.

4. Open the myexpress by management tool but I can not see db1 and db2 databases but the datafiles and logfiles are in the data directory.

The question is what I need to do so I can consolidate exited databases so they can be seen in "myexpress" instance by management tool?

Northwind Database In SQL Server Management Studio Express Is Lost Or Used/processed By VB 2005 Express:How To Locate/return It

Dec 3, 2007

Hi all,

In the last one and half years, I used the Northwind Database in SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) to learn the programming of SqlConnections, Data sources, Database Exploere, ADO.NET 2.0, etc. via VB 2005 Express.

The Northwind Database in my SSMSE got lost very often, but I was not aware of it. How can I know where the Northwind Database is used or processed by my VB 2005 Express projects that were the examples of some tutorial books or my trial projects? How can I release the Northwind Database back to my SSMSE from the VB 2005 Express projects? Please help and advise.

Thanks in advance,
Scott Chang

Can't Connect To Sql Server 2005 Database Using Vb 2005 Express

Nov 21, 2006

I've used Sql Server 2000 and Visual Studio 2003 for a few years. I've started a new position and they have access to Sql Server 2005 Standard and Visual Basic 2005 Express which I'd like to use for a new project. So I installed Sql Server 2005 and then VB 2005 Express on my workstation. I didn't choose the Sql Server option for VB Express because I already had Sql Server 2005 Standard installed with a simple database created. I created a simple vb project that justs connects to the database but I get the following error.

Request for the permission of type 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlClientPermission, System.Data, Version=2.0000, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed.
I looked at permissions in the database and it looks ok. I'm the db owner and I'm using Windows Auth. My connection string is

"Data Source=MySystem;initial catalog=AdventureWorks;integrated security=true;"

I thought I'd look at the starter kit to get some ideas about what the problem is, but when I started the movie starter kit project, it was upset that I didn't have Sql Server 2005 EXPRESS installed. Yea, but I do have Sql Server 2005 Standard installed.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

SQL Express Question For Parasing Data From An Oracle Database

Dec 13, 2006

Hi,

Below and far below are my SQL command and raw data. In the data, each lot has 13 records, for example, T6L09641 has 13 records. What I am working on is to average the Total, Large, Middle and Small for each lot as a representative instead of listing every record. So, I wrote a SQL express and put it in my Access and run it. However, I got an error message "ORA-00905:missing keyword(#905)". I double checked it again and found nothing stange. Someone can help me to modify it?

SELECT LINE_ID, LOT_ID, AVG(TSIZE_QTY_PA)/10000 Total, AVG(LSIZE_QTY_PA)/10000 Large, AVG(MSIZE_QTY_PA)/10000 Min, AVG(SSIZE_QTY_PA)/10000 Small, RCV_TIME Time FROM IWMES.DIMES_PPTU_PT_IPCRST Where (LINE_ID='L401') GROUP BY LOT_ID HAVING RCV_TIME BETWEEN 12/10/2006 00:00 AND 12/13/2006 00:00 ORDER BY LOT_ID

How To Apply SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 To The Version Of SQL Server 2005 Express Which Installs With Visual Studio 2005?

Aug 8, 2006

When I installed VS 2005, it installed the default version of SQL Server 2005 Express that ships with Visual Studio 2005 installer media.

How can apply SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 to update this existing instance?

Currently, if I run this query:

SELECT @@version

I get the following:

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.1399.06 (Intel X86) Oct 14 2005 00:33:37 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Express Edition on Windows NT 5.1 (Build 2600: Service Pack 2)

After applying SP1, I should get 9.00.2047.00.

Should I just go to this link and download & install the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP1:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/download/

Thank you,

Bashman

Side By Side Installations Of SQL2005 Express And Developer Editions

Apr 28, 2007

I have downloaded and installed VS C# Express Orcas beta 1. It appears that Express editons ov VS can only connect to SQL2005 Express and not to a high end edition which I have on my computer. In one of the Orcas forums, it was suggested that I can install SQL2005 Express side by side my high end SQL 2005. To play it safe, I wanted to get a confirmation from this forum before I do that. Is a side-by-side installation ok? thanks.

SQL Server 2005 Express Database On The Internet

Jul 12, 2006

Hey all!I am hoping that somebody will be able to help me getting my database working over the Internet.I am using VS 2005 and SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and have my database set up within a web site project in VS under the App_Data folder.Everything runs smoothly when running the application on localhost I am just facing a problem when I attempt the same thing after uploading my pages to my web server.I am receiving the following error:An error has occurred while establishing a connection to
the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be
caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not
allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26
- Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)I have tried enabling the disabled SQLEXPRESS protocols and disabled my firewall with no luck.I have also looked into using localhostsqlexpress as the server name but I dont see how this method would work as it appears to only run a database on the local machine which is the problem I have currently.Could anybody help me with this problem? I have only just started trying to use SQL Server Express as a means of database connectivity and I am not exactly sure how it all works. Thanks

Web Hosting - ASP.NET With SQL Server 2005 Express Database

Jun 6, 2006

What is needed for a hoster / hosting company to be able to host .Net applications with SQL Server 2005 Express database?

My questions regarding this issue basically are:

If a hoster has several sites hosted on a server, can each one of them have its own SQL Express database?
Or, do they have to be migrated to full SQL Server?

What is with the Upsize Tool for SQL Server Express (or something like that) - is it available?
Generally, how do hosters do their hosting - do they have SQL Server SPLA signed? Or do they just have SQL Server 2005 Express and allow users just to copy their web sites and databases to server?

I would really appreciate any answer.

Kind regards,

Luka

SQL Server 2005 Express Adv. SP2 Setup Fails To Install SQL Server Database Serices Only.

Mar 26, 2007

I run setup using GUI. It upgrades all components of the existing installation w/out any problems except the last component. That is, it proceeds with the installation of SQL Server Database Serices and at the end fails to shut down the SQL Server and aborts the installation reporting the following:

"Service 'Computer_NameSQLEXPRESS' could not be stopped. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to stop system services. The error code is (16386)".

I am running Windows XP SP2 with both .NET 2.0 and .NET 3.0 installed on it. I am logged in as a system administrator.

The most puzzling to me things are:

- the setup starts AND STOPS w/out any problems SQL Server Reporting Services and SQL Server VSS Writer (thus finding enough privileges for both).

- the setup starts the SQL Server w/out any problems (thus it finds enough privileges to START A SYSTEM SERVICE) and then fails as described above 'lucking privileges".

During installation before failing the setup displays following:

"Run as Normal User. RANU instance Shutdwon in progress: MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS". The "normal user" puzzles me too, unless the SQL Server itself is meant here.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I can provide the installation log file as well.

Thanks.

Problem With Creating New SQL Server Database In VWDExpress Using SQL Server 2005 Express

Jul 1, 2006

I have two problems on creating new SQL server database in Visual Web Developer 2005 Express using SQL server 2005 Express.

The 1st problem: (It is resolved)

After installed SQL Server 2005 express and Visual Web Developer 2005 Express. When I tried to create a SQL server database in VWD the following error occurred:

"connection to SQL Server files (*.mdf) require SQL server express 2005 to function properly. please verify the installation of the component or download from the URL: go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkId=49251"

I was stuck with this problem for few days. I did several times of install/reinstall of VWPExpress and SQL server Express, made very sure following proper de-installation sequence as specified in the release readme. But it did not resolve the problem.

Latter I found out that if I login with another Windows XP user account, I don't get the problem.

Changing the security authority of XP file systems and IIS didn't help.

And to prove that I was doing the installation correctly, I tried a new installation of the VWDExpress with SQL server 2005 express in another machine, it worked and I could create new empty SQL database.

After 2 days of frustrating changing of options, parameters, server names, messing with the registry etc.... Finally, I found a way to overcome this problem.

The solution is:

In Visual Web Developer 2005 Express, select:

Tools -> Options -> Database Tools -> Data Connections,

Change the setting: "SQL Server Instance Name (blank for default)" to "SQLEXPRESS". (where SQLEXPRESS is the default server instance name)

That solved this 1st problem.

I still don't know the exact reason for this problem. But I recalled I did installed the VWDExpress few weeks ago, I might have installed it without selecting SQL server 2005 express at that point. I guess the subsequent install/re-install did not clean up those junk in the registry.

I still have the 2nd problem:

The "Create new SQL database..." option is always grayed out when I right click on the Data connections in the "Database Explorer" tab.

I have a bypass for this difficulty for time being:

I have to do it by using the "Add connection....", put in the server name: "myserver/SQLEXPRESS" and a new database name.

Any input form anyone ? Appreciated!
