Can I Install SQL Server 6.5 On Alpha System With Fx!32

Dec 23, 1998

Hello,

We want to port our Nt application to Alpha system with Fx!32. Is it possible to have SQl Server on this system.

Is there any SQL server available specifically for Alpha system..? Because there are VB and VC compilers available for Alpha systems.

ThanX

Pattern Matching - Searching For Numeric Or Alpha Or Alpha-Numeric Characters In A String

Aug 18, 2006

Hi,

I was trying to find numeric characters in a field of nvarchar. I looked this up in HELP.

Wildcard
Meaning

%

Any string of zero or more characters.

_

Any single character.

[ ]

Any single character within the specified range (for example, [a-f]) or set (for example, [abcdef]).

Any single character not within the specified range (for example, [^a - f]) or set (for example, [^abcdef]).

Nowhere in the examples below it in Help was it explicitly detailed that a user could do this.

In MS Access the # can be substituted for any numeric character such that I could do a WHERE clause:

WHERE
Gift_Date NOT LIKE "####*"

After looking at the above for the [ ] wildcard, it became clear that I could subsitute [0-9] for #:

WHERE
Gift_Date NOT LIKE '[0-9][0-9][0-9][0-9]%'

using single quotes and the % wildcard instead of Access' double quotes and * wildcard.

Just putting this out there for anybody else that is new to SQL, like me.

SQL Server 2005 Unattended Install Bootstrapper Fails On French XP System

Jan 10, 2008

The scenario I have is as follows:

Our product ships with a bootstrapper that installs SQL Server 2005 silently for our clients - basically it's a pre-req which we load for them if it's not already installed.

The bootstrapper supplies the service account identity parameters for the SQL Server install command line in English. It supplies the local system account (NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM).

The problem occurs when we tried to install the product onto a French version of XP. We got the error message "SQL Server setup could not validate the service accounts. Either the service accounts have not been provided for all the services being installed, or the specified username or password is incorrect. For each service, specify a valid username, password, and domain, or specify a built-in system account."

Having read the page http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143504.aspx#Localized_service_names we have discovered that the system account identity has a different name for French (AUTORITE NTSYSTEM) along with some other languages ... but we're not sure how to resolve the problem.

Can anyone out there tell me whether we ...
1) Can get the machine being installed on to tell us the local system account identity so we can substitute it into our command line in the bootstrapper?
2) Have to write a different bootstrapper for each language that names the local system account identity differently?
3) Have overlooked some other solution?

Also, does anyone know how many languages and which they are that give the local system account a name that's different to "NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM"??

Thanks,
Sara

<EDIT>

Sorry, omitted a vital bit of information. The bootstrapper is written in C++.
We know the .NET code to retrieve an NT account given a well known SID. Can we do the same in C++ somehow??
</EDIT>

Unattended (Silent) Install SQL Server Express How Do I Specify A The Built In System Account???

Aug 15, 2006

When doing a unattended install of Microsoft SQL Server Express, I have a problem specifing the service to installed to be run under the as local system account.

I'm using: SQLACCOUNT & SQLPASSWORD parameters but it just won't work.

As default SQL Server is installed using the NETWORK SERVICE account, this causes the database to be read-only. What I want is to specifiy in the script that the service should run under the LOCAL SYSTEM account instead. This must also be OS-language independent.

I've tried:

SQLACCOUNT=NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM
SQLACCOUNT=NT AUTHORITYLOCAL SYSTEM
SQLACCOUNT=NT AUTHORITYLOCAL SERVICE
SQLACCOUNT=SYSTEM

SQLACCOUNT=BUILT-INSYSTEM

etc.

and even some different SID as:

S-1-5-18
S-1-5-19

All with no password with the SQLPASSWORD parameter:

SQLPASSWORD=

I still getting the same error while validating the service account.

Is there someone else who knows what I'm doing wrong?

Best regards,

Mattias

Install Error - Operating System Service Pack Level (SP1)

Mar 5, 2007

I am attempting to install SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition (from CD) on my IBM PC with XP Operating System. During set up, I get a error message (see below) telling me about a Service Pack requirement. When I click on the link provided in the error message, it does not lead to any service pack download.

I'm trying to read thru these forum posts, it seems that there is a service pack that I need to download after installing SQL Server 2005. But how can I install the pack after when I can't install SQL Server. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Below is more information about the version of windows my PC has.

Reference To Data.System.SqlServerCe In VS2005 Does Not Install CE 2.0 To Emulator/PDA

Feb 3, 2006

We have a Compact Framework 1.1 application that uses Sql Server CE 2.0. In VS2003, a reference to System.Data.SqlServerCe causes the Sql Server CE dlls and Query Analyzer to install to the Emulator or PDA.

I am currently converting the application to Compact Framework 2.0, but we are not upgrading to Sql Server Mobile (yet). However, the reference to System.Data.SqlServerCe, in VS 2005, no longer causes Sql Server CE to install to the PDA/Emulator.

There is a difference in the build outputs between VS2003 & VS2005. In 2003, System_SR_enu.cab, sqlce.wce4.x86.cab & sqlce.dev.wce4.x86.cab are copied & lanuched. In 2005, only System_SR_enu.cab is copied... no launch.

Any ideas? Reinstall VS2005?

Install Error System.data.sqlserverce Not In Global Assembly Cache

Nov 2, 2006

I have built a small application in vs2005 (vb) using system.data.slqserverce building

in the mobile sql engine into my app. I intend to run this on desktop. The app

works fine on my development laptop machine, when i publish it (to a hard disk folder) and run it on another laptop, i get:

'unable to install or run the application. The application requires that assembly system.data.sqlserverce version 9.0.242.0 be installed in the Global Assembly Cache (GAC) first.'

This is my first app in .net so not sure what this means.

I thought all i had to do was reference the file (which i have done in the project) and

VS would take care of stuff like this? Framework 2.0 is installed on the target machine.

Hope im in the right forum for this! if not i apologise

Any help most appreciated.

Post SP2-Hotfixes Fails To Install Database Services On Clustered Servers With System Dbs On Non-default Location

Jan 9, 2008

Hi,

We've had this issue for awhile, but I have not been able to find a resolution for this. We have 2 identical servers (hardware & software) set-up: IBM x3850-(88633RU) running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise x64 (5.2.3790 SP1 Build 3790 R2). Server A was running SP1 (Build 9.0.2047) on a 3-node active-passive-passive failover cluster. Server B was running SP2 + Hotfix KB933097 (Build 9.0.3152) on a 2-node active-passive failover cluster. Both these servers are heavily utilized, and when originally installed with these versions of SQL Server Enterprise 2005 experienced no issues during or post-install. The original install of SQL 2005 Enterprise on both these servers had the Cluster Group Selection "Data files" setting changed to "M:MICROSOFT SQL SERVER" so that all system dbs and binaries would be installed to that location. On Server B where SP2 had already been applied, the update was downloaded on May 1, 2007, well after the GDR issues which had been plaguing SP2 releases was supposed to have been resolved.

Our problems began the night when we tried to apply hotfix KB933097 on Server A, and cumulative update packages 1,2,3 on Servers A & B, as well as catch-up the same SP2 and hotfix packages on other non-clustered servers where default system db locations remained the same. On all servers other than Servers A and B, the installs proceeded smoothly and without issue.

On Server B, which was already running SP2 + Hotfix KB933097, we tried installing Cumulative Update Package 1 (Build 9.0.3161) on the primary node. The install proceeded until the following errors were encountered:

"[Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]Cannot find the object 'dm_exec_query_resource_semaphores', because it does not exist or you do not have permission."

"[Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]Cannot find the object 'dm_exec_query_memory_grants', because it does not exist or you do not have permission."

After this, the setup finished with the message "Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (64-bit) - Update 'Hotfix 3161 for SQL Server Database Services 2005 (64-bit) ENU (KB935356)' could not be installed. Error code 1603. Additional information is available in the log file C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOGHotfixSQL9_Hotfix_KB935356_sqlrun_sql.msp.log."

We rebooted the server and tried several times to reinstall the hotfix as sa and as the database service account with full windows and sa credentials, each time with no success, and rebooting between retries. All other components were installed successfully. We were hesitant to try uninstalling the hotfix, since it was unable to be removed successfully in previous attempts. However, when I connected to Database Engine using Management Studio, I found that the version of SQL being reported was in fact Build 9.0.3161! Everything also appeared to be running properly.

I tried to to Google the answer, but could only find information as applied to SP1 when system dbs master and mssqlsystemresource were located on different locations (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;918695 ). I had already verified that all system dbs, including the ones mentioned, were originally and currently located together on M:Microsoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData.

Finally I contacted a fellow DBA who advised me to continue installing all the other hotfixes, and then compare all SQL files against other servers where the install succeeded to ensure all system files were updated correctly (matching file sizes and datetime stamps). Since we were depending on a fix in Cumulative Update Package 3 to fix a critical log-shipping security issue, I went ahead with the rest of the installs, getting the same error with each package, rebooting between each install.

We found after the final install that the mssqlsystemresource files in the M:Microsoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData

directory were in fact updated after each install with a new timestamp, and that all files in C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLBinn matched on both file size and timestamp. The log-shipping security issue we were looking to fix also appeared to be resolved by the last update.

On Server A, which was running SP1 (Build 9.0.2047), we installed the same SP2 package as we had on Server B with no issue. We rebooted and then tried to apply the same Hotfix KB933097 (Build 9.0.3152) that had been applied successfully on Server B and found to our surprise that the same errors were being generated here as well. We continued to apply the rest of the hotfixes so that both servers matched software updates. Comparing the above directories showed that files seemed to have been updated, even though database services appeared to be not installed.

It looks like we now need Cumulative Update 5 hotfix package in order to deal with WMI alerting issues, but I'm afraid to apply it until we have a known resolution for the past errors.

Since this issue was supposed to be resolved by SP2, I'm not sure why these post-SP2 hotfixes should fail. It seems to me to be an issue of the directory location of the system files which is in question.

I can post the hotfix log files as well, if anyone is interested in seeing them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. As well, does anyone have any idea when SP3 is scheduled to come out? I really don't like applying hotfixes which are usually untested for general purposes, and it seems Microsoft is delaying this in favour of releasing SQL 2008.

Sql Server 2005 Operating System Compatibility Warning Message In System Configuration Check

Apr 3, 2007

Ok guys, I am trying to install Sql server 2005 on Vista but I am still stuck with this warning message in the System Configuration Check during Sql server 2K5 installation :

SQL Server Edition Operating System Compatibility (Warning)
Messages
* SQL Server Edition Operating System Compatibility

* Some components of this edition of SQL Server are not supported on this operating system. For details, see 'Hardware and Software Requirements for Installing SQL Server 2005' in Microsoft SQL Server Books Online.

Now, I know I need to install SP2 but how the hell I am going to install SP2 if Sql server 2005 doesn't install any of the components including Sql server Database services, Analysus services, Reporting integration services( only the workstation component is available for installation)?

Any work around for this issue?

P.S.: I didn't install VS.NET 2005 yet, can this solve the problem?

Thanks.

I suppose an error dialog (or log message) that actually told you what is wrong and then what to do is too much to ask for. (Or an installer than just copied all the files into place). :(

Migrate Alpha Sql 6.5 To Intel Platform

Jan 7, 2002

Hello:

Our company needs to (restore/migrate) our Alpha Nt4sp4 sql 6.5sp5a databases to an Intel hardware platform. For the time being the new intel server will be runing Nt4sp4 sql 6.5 sp5a. I understand that if we were to upgrade to sql 7 we would be able to restore the databases without any problems. However upgrading to sql 7 is not an option right now. I have tried to restore a backup from the alpha to an intel based machine, and it fails because the processor types are different.

I have already search technet, but found nothing, except upgrade to sql 7.

I am hoping someone out there could point me in the right direction.

Thank inadvance for your help, I appreciate it very much.

Cindy

SQL Transfer From Alpha To Intel Platform

Oct 19, 2000

please please help?

For the last couple of days i've been trying to transfer a SQL6.5 database from an Alpha platform to an Intel one.

At one point i loaded SQL7 on the Intel platform and tried to perform an upgrade (using the wizard), across the network - but it just did not want to play.

Using Veritas Backup Exec, with SQL6.5 on both machines, i've tried doing a backup of the database on the Alpha platform and then restore to the Intel Platform, but this fails stating that the processors are incompatible

Am i trying something that is impossible?

If anyone could point me in the right direction i'd be truely grateful.

Sharpy

Backup From Alpha, Restore On Intel??

Dec 10, 1999

Hi,

I'm trying to move a database over from an Alpha to an Intel-base PC. The SQL Server database is on an Alpha server. The 2nd machine is an Intel. When I make a backup of the database from Alpha, copy over the file to the 2nd PC (Intel) and then try to restore it from the 2nd PC, it doesn't sure up on the list of restores when I click on 'Add Device'

The only other way I can get this to work successfully is with a Database Object Transfer, which takes too long (several hours) and limits me to being on site. I need to do this every few weeks so I need a better way to transfer the database over ?

Anyone have any experience with SQL Server on Alpha??

Joyce

Get Index Of First Alpha-numeric Character

Sep 29, 2005

In SQL I need to be able to take a varchar parameter @Area and convert it to a float.

The input values for @Area I can't control. They can range from 6300 to 6,300 SqFt to 1.2 Acres .

So to convert this value to a float I basically look through the string and remove everything that isn't a number or a period. Then I would convert this value to square feet based on how large the number is.

Code:

DECLARE @k int, @Temp VarChar(25), @SqFt Float
SELECT@Temp = @Area
select @Temp

select @k = patindex('%[^0-9. ]%', @Temp)
while @k> 0
begin
select @Temp = replace(@Temp, substring(@Temp, @k, 1), '')
select @k= patindex('%[^0-9. ]%', @Temp)
end

If @Temp = ''
BEGIN
SET @Temp = '0'
END

SELECT @SqFt = Convert(Float, @Temp)

--Distinguish if it was acres or square feet
If (@SqFt > 750.00)
BEGIN
SET @SqFt = @SqFt
END
ELSE
BEGIN
SET @SqFt = (@SqFt * Convert(Float,43560) )
END

SELECT @SqFt

This works great except for one situation, If @Area is something like 6,300 Sq.Ft. . When I run it through the part that removes all non-numeric items and periods, I end up with 6300 .. . So to get around this I want to find the first letter in the string and then remove everything after it. Then take the result and run it through part that removes everything but the numbers and period.

However I can't find away to get the index of the alpha-numeric character and remove everything after it.

Thanks in advance!

Trigger To Seperate Alpha From Numeric

Nov 9, 2007

We have a table with an indesx that is varchar(7). It contains up to 5 numbers and 2 characters to denote batches. IE. 100a
105zz
1c
2
10001w

In an Access gui I need to be able to sort this field numericaly so each number shows up in its correct position. IE.
1c
2
100a
105zz
10001w

In order to accomplish this, I created a seperate field on the table named Num as varchar(5). I would like to create a trigger that updates this field any time a new batch number is entered. This way I can have my queries order by Num when returning the recordsets to the GUI.

Below is the code that I thought would work, but it is giving me an error near the keyword BEGIN after the IF(ISNUMERIC) statement. I can't seem to find an error with this code, but I thought maybe a thousand fresh sets of eyes could. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also if you know of a better way to accomplish this task, please feel free to post here.

TIA,

Aaron

CREATE TRIGGER [InsertNum] ON [dbo].[IP_Batch_Table_Temp]
FOR INSERT, UPDATE
AS

DECLARE @Num varchar(7)
DECLARE @Num1 CHAR(7)
DECLARE @x INT

SET @Num = (SELECT IP_Batch_Number FROM inserted)
SET @x = 1
WHILE (@x < len(@Num))
BEGIN
IF (ISNUMERIC( SUBSTRING(@Num, @x, 1) ) )
BEGIN
SET @Num1 = @Num1 + SUBSTRING(@Num, @x, 1)
END
SET @x = @x + 1
END
UPDATE IP_BATCH_TABLE_TEMP SET NUMBER = ltrim(rtrim(@Num1)) WHERE IP_BATCH_NUMBER = @Num

Indexing - What Is Fastest? Numeric Or Alpha Fields?

Jul 27, 2006

If I create an index on a field in SQL Server, what will be the most efficient (fastest) field type to index a field? (This field will be a "Pointer" to a child table that will contain a list of codes, and their description.)
Would a Numeric field be quicker than a VarChar field?
VarChar would make it easier for a Human to decipher the raw records. (For example, if I used a numeric the code would be 42 or 47, while the VarChar could be 'savings' or 'checking'.)
Basically I will have the following "Master" table: FieldType
---------
IDInt
NameVarChar
StatusInt -or- VarChar
Customer_TypeInt -or- VarChar
If Customer_Type is a code that can be looked up in another table, and I index that field, would I want the "Code" to be an Int or VarChar?
SQL: Select *
From Master
Where Customer_Type = <42> or <'savings'>
My Where clause would depend on the field type.
Thank you, Bryan

Determine If Values In A Field Are Alpha Or Numeric

Feb 28, 2008

HI,
Thanks in advance for taking your time to read this post.
I am trying to write a SQL query using MS SQL 2005 that will read the value of a field and tell if it is alpha or numeric. I have tried the following but it does not work:
select field1 from table1 where left(field1,2)='[0-9]'
select field1 from table1 where isnumber(left(field1,2) tried with a =1 at the end and without and =1 at the end
the goal is to read through a field and format it so if a field looks like this 12xxx111xx I can change it to look like 12-xxx-111-xx.
Any help is greatly apprecaited

Removing Non-alpha Characters && Spaces Script...

Dec 6, 2006

Hi I am trying to strip out any non-alpha characters from a field.

i.e. Field = ABC"_IT8*$ should return: ABCIT8

I am writing a loop to do this for all values of a field. The script runs, but hangs....please could somebody advise on the code below...:

I run the script but it doesn't seem to finish. Can anybody see any issues with the code:

DECLARE @Index SMALLINT,
@MATCH_Supplier_name varchar(500),
@Counter numeric,
@Max numeric
-- @sqlstring varchar(500)

SET @Counter = 1
SET @Max = (SELECT Max(DTect_Supplier_SRN) FROM SUPPLIER_TABLE_TEST)

WHILE @Counter <@Max
BEGIN
SET @MATCH_Supplier_name = (SELECT Match_Supplier_Name FROM SUPPLIER_TABLE_TEST WHERE @Counter = DTect_Supplier_SRN)
SET @Index = LEN(@MATCH_Supplier_name)
WHILE @Index > = 1
SET @MATCH_Supplier_name = CASE
WHEN SUBSTRING(@MATCH_Supplier_name, @Index, 1) LIKE '[a-zA-Z]' TH EN SUBSTRING(@MATCH_Supplier_name, @Index, 1)
WHEN SUBSTRING(@MATCH_Supplier_name, @Index, 1) LIKE '[0-9]' THEN SUBSTRING(@MATCH_Supplier_name, @Index, 1)
ELSE ''
END + @MATCH_Supplier_name
SET @Index = @Index - 1
--PRINT @MATCH_Supplier_name
SET @Counter = @Counter + 1
END

Select Statment On Column That Can Contain Alpha And Numeric Values

Sep 13, 2007

Hi,
I have a little bit of a problem I cannot seem to figure it out. Is it possible to write a Select statement that contains a WHERE column_name > desired_numeric_value
The tricky part it that the column is of CHAR type and can contain numeric grades ranging from 0-100 or the letter I for Incomplete.
My SQL was working perfect when this column contained only numbers as soon as a record with I was added I get the following error:
Character to numeric conversion error
This report will be used to find students who have failing grades. Thanks for any help!

Remove Alpha Chars && All Spaces In Field [UPDATED]

Apr 5, 2007

Hello,

I need to strip out all alpha chars and spaces in a given field and return only the numbers.

I've tried =CInt(Fields!Info.Value) and get an unexplained error. If the data was formatted consitantly I could simply do a RTrim or Right, but the number strings are not the same, some have spaces as in phone numbers (1 800 555 1212) or don't have a leading 1. Most instances are correct for my purpose (8005551212).

Any help would be appreciated.

UPDATE: Using the Replace function =Replace(Fields!Info.Value, " ","") gets me almost there. Now I should be able to use a Right, 10 function to return my desired value. Is it possible to combine these two funtions together?
