Can Multi-CPU Spawn Several SPIDs From One SP Execution?

Jan 24, 2008

Hi,

The myComplexProc stored proc does the following in sequence:
1. Call a UDF
2. Call another Stored Proc
3. Make a SELECT with 4 joins
4. Make another SELECT 4 joins + aggregate.

Question1: if myComplexProc is executed on 4-CPUs SQL2K Server, does it start and complete with a single SPID?

Question2: Is SQL2K smart enough to do some sort of parallelism behind the scene? If yes, can it spawn some extra SPIDs? How does it handle lock or sequencing? Because in the hypothetic scenario above Step N+1 re-uses the results of Step N so it has to wait for Step N to complete.

Thanks very much in advance for any help.

Stopping The Execution Of A Multi-batch Script

May 15, 2008

We have a number of customers using the same database and ASP application. We need to run a script that modifies the database to the latest version. If the script runs twice it will cause problems so we need to build in a fail safe way of stopping it running a second time.

To do this we can update a version table at the end of the script. At the start of the script we check that the version is the previous one. If it isn't then we need to abort the enitre script. The problem is that the RETURN statement will only exit the current batch and execution of the script will continue from the next GO statement.

Is there any way to stop a multi-batch script running if a certain condition is met in one batch in such a way that the remaining batches do not run?

Matrix Reports Spawn Extra Page - Enclosing In List Fixes This.

Apr 20, 2007

We really like using the Matrix reports, but we were finding that every Matrix report that we created would spawn an extraneous blank page. We tried putting the matrix in a rectangle, which works well for positioning other items on reports, but this had no effect on the problem.

Then we tried placing the matrix in a list with the list group details set to "=Nothing". It worked great - no more extra pages. Looked and didn't see this tip mentioned elsewhere so thought it might be worth sharing.

Hanging Spids

Feb 22, 2001

We have just combined 3 sites into one server.
Two of the sites are serving fine, however one site has spids
that won't disconnect. By the end of the day there are over 600 spids
from that one site. At first we thought it was due to the ASP pages
had a db connect, but nothing that closed that db connection. But after
they modified the pages, we are still having the same problem. Checked
the webserver and they are identical to the other webservers.
Any ideas???

Multiple User SPIDs Which Won't Go Away??

May 22, 2001

I have an issue with a server where some users are recieving error messages along the lines of "There are currently 250 connected users etc....". the result of which is that the users sometimes can't connect. The server properties have Current Users set to 250 - I know that I could increase this figure but that doesnt't appear to be the problem.

It would seem that connections appear to stay connected even though the user has finished any server/client transactions. Also there seems to be a huge number of SPIDs even when there are only a handfull of users. Most of the 'Process Details' for these user threads show the following: "IF @@TRANCOUNT > 0 COMMIT TRAN".

What is going on and why are these Process IDs hanging around, sometimes the only option is to reboot the client PCs since trying to kill the processes just makes them reappear a few seconds later?

It could be the 32-bit client application causing it, but these problems are only on one server out of half a dozen.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Derek.

SQL Server 2000 Spids Blocking Themselves

Oct 19, 2005

Hey guys,

I've recently noticed some strange behaviour with sql server 2000 spid's blocking themselves. The spid will appear to be blocked for short periods of time, and then the block will disappear. I'm not sure how this could occur. It started appearing around the same time as I applied SP4.

If anyone could provide any insight into this, it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Merge Replication And Spids Left Behind

Jul 20, 2005

We are using Merge replication with clients from remote offices (SQL2000, sp3). Recently, I have had a problem with users who arereplicating, and they shut down their laptops. The connection neverdies, and I end up with major blocking issues related to the"orphaned" spid. The tables that are blocked are used to filter dataon each client. Since the orphaned spid is blocking, backups will runforever, and have to be killed, and a SQL management job thatinserts/updates data in these tables has to be killed. If I kill the spid, it shows a rollback at 0% and the status neverchanges. The user has disconnected, and there is really nothing toroll back. How can I get rid of this spid with out restarting SQLserver, or rebooting my server?Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,Amy M

SQL Server Phantom SPIDs Causes Locking And Delays

Nov 10, 2003

A fellow developer of mine has created a ASP.Net application that executes some fairly complex stored procedures. This application is for all intensive purposes a queue and 3 or 4 people work on processing items in a FIFO type environment. There is logic in the Stored procedures to make sure each worker get a unique entry using a series of query hints.

Well what we are seeing is if these works are moving at a rapid pace and we execute an sp_who2 on the sql server there are entries that that seems to be hanging there and REMAINING there even after a browser is closed or the disposed method has been called on the connection object. Has anyone else experienced something similar to this with an ASP.Net application used by mutiple people?

My inclination is to blame the design of the application, but before I do that and step on my co-workers toes I thought I would throw this out to the group.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Disconnect A User Whoz Locking The DB With Diff SPIDs

Jun 1, 2004

I have issued a simple insert statement on table and the statement could not insert a single row into the table. When i check the locks on the tables i found that almost 5000(five thousand) locks on the table for a single user with different SPID(s).
The user is and sql server user(not a windows user) and used to connect to the application.I wanted to disconnect the user from the DB so that all the locks will be freed. But i dunno how to disconnect a user from the DB. I know that i can issue KILL command to Terminate a user process based on the system process ID,but here the same user has nearly 1000 SPIDs.I thought that it would be very big job to kill each and every process and restared the sql server.but i guess its not the correct process to do.
how can i dosconnect a specific user from the DB.

Thanks.

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: MDW Data Collector - Large Number Of SPIDs

Nov 6, 2015

I've installed the MDW (Mangement Data Warehouse) database on our central monitoring SQL Server. I've then added a number of servers to be monitored. The data is collected on the servers that are being monitored and uploaded to the central MDW Monitoring server.

On the servers that are being monitored, I'm seeing a large number (over 1000) of SPIDs being generated by 'SQL Server Data Collector'.

Is this normal behaviour? I've seen more blocking as a result of this.

Is there any way to reduce the number of SPIDs generated?

SQL 2012 :: Disaster Recovery Options For Multi-Database Multi-Instance Environment

Sep 23, 2014

Disaster Recovery Options based on the following criteria.

--Currently running SQL 2012 standard edition
--We have 18000 databases (same schema across databases)- majority of databases are less than 2gb-- across 64 instances approximately
--Recovery needs to happen within 1 hour (Not sure that this is realistic
-- We are building a new data center and building dr from the ground up.

What I have looked into is:

1. Transactional Replication: Too Much Data Not viable
2. AlwaysOn Availability Groups (Need enterprise) Again too many databases and would have to upgrade all instances
3. Log Shipping is a viable option and the only one I can come up with that would work right now. Might be a management nightmare but with this many databases probably all options with be a nightmare.

Execution Plans &<&> Proportionate Execution Times

Dec 7, 2005

Hi I am slowly getting to grips with SQL Server. As a part of this, I have been attempting to work on producing more efficient queries. This post is regarding what appears to be a discrepancy between the SQL Server execution plan and the actual time taken by a query to run. My brief is to produce an attendance system for an education establishment (I presume you know I'm not an A-Level student completing a project :p ). Circa 1.5m rows per annum, testing with ~3m rows currently. College_Year could strictly be inferred from the AttDateTime however it is included as a field because it a part of just about every PK this table is ever likely to be linked to. Indexes are not fully optimised yet. Table:CREATE TABLE [dbo].[AttendanceDets] ([College_Year] [smallint] NOT NULL ,[Group_Code] [char] (12) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL ,[Student_ID] [char] (8) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL ,[Session_Date] [datetime] NOT NULL ,[Start_Time] [datetime] NOT NULL ,[Att_Code] [char] (1) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL ) ON [PRIMARY]GO CREATE CLUSTERED INDEX [IX_AltPK_Clust_AttendanceDets] ON [dbo].[AttendanceDets]([College_Year], [Group_Code], [Student_ID], [Session_Date], [Att_Code]) ON [PRIMARY]GO CREATE INDEX [All] ON [dbo].[AttendanceDets]([College_Year], [Group_Code], [Student_ID], [Session_Date], [Start_Time], [Att_Code]) ON [PRIMARY]GO CREATE INDEX [IX_AttendanceDets] ON [dbo].[AttendanceDets]([Att_Code]) ON [PRIMARY]GOALL inserts are via an overnight sproc - data comes from a third party system. Group_Code is 12 chars (no more no less), student_ID 8 chars (no more no less). I have created a simple sproc. I am using this as a benchmark against which I am testing my options. I appreciate that this sproc is an inefficient jack of all trades - it has been designed as such so I can compare its performance to more specific sprocs and possibly some dynamic SQL. Sproc:CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[CAMsp_Att] @College_Year AS SmallInt,@Student_ID AS VarChar(8) = '________', @Group_Code AS VarChar(12) = '____________', @Start_Date AS DateTime = '1950/01/01', @End_Date as DateTime = '2020/01/01', @Att_Code AS VarChar(1) = '_' AS IF @Start_Date = '1950/01/01'SET @Start_Date = CAST(CAST(@College_Year AS Char(4)) + '/08/31' AS DateTime) IF @End_Date = '2020/01/01'SET @End_Date = CAST(CAST(@College_Year +1 AS Char(4)) + '/07/31' AS DateTime) SELECT College_Year, Group_Code, Student_ID, Session_Date, Start_Time, Att_Code FROM dbo.AttendanceDets WHERE College_Year = @College_YearAND Group_Code LIKE @Group_CodeAND Student_ID LIKE @Student_IDAND Session_Date <= @End_DateAND Session_Date >=@Start_DateAND Att_Code LIKE @Att_CodeGOMy confusion lies with running the below script with Show Execution Plan:--SET SHOWPLAN_TEXT ON--Go DECLARE @Time as DateTime Set @Time = GetDate() select College_Year, group_code, Student_ID, Session_Date, Start_Time, Att_Code from attendanceDetswhere College_Year = 2005 AND group_code LIKE '____________' AND Student_ID LIKE '________'AND Session_Date <= '2005-11-16' AND Session_Date >= '2005-11-16' AND Att_Code LIKE '_' Print 'First query took: ' + CAST(DATEDIFF(ms, @Time, GETDATE()) AS VarCHar(5)) + ' milli-Seconds' Set @Time = GetDate() EXEC CAMsp_Att @College_Year = 2005, @Start_Date = '2005-11-16', @End_Date = '2005-11-16' Print 'Second query took: ' + CAST(DATEDIFF(ms, @Time, GETDATE()) AS VarCHar(5)) + ' milli-Seconds'GO --SET SHOWPLAN_TEXT OFF--GOThe execution plan for the first query appears miles more costly than the sproc yet it is effectively the same query with no parameters. However, my understanding is the cached plan substitutes literals for parameters anyway. In any case - the first query cost is listed as 99.52% of the batch, the sproc 0.48% (comparing the IO, cpu costs etc support this). BUT the text output is:(10639 row(s) affected) First query took: 596 milli-Seconds (10639 row(s) affected) Second query took: 2856 milli-SecondsI appreciate that logical and physical performance are not one and the same but can why is there such a huge discrepancy between the two? They are tested on a dedicated test server, and repeated running and switching the order of the queries elicits the same results. Sample data can be provided if requested but I assumed it would not shed much light. BTW - I know that additional indexes can bring the plans and execution time closer together - my question is more about the concept. If you've made it this far - many thanks. If you can enlighten me - infinite thanks.

Multi-database Multi-server

Mar 27, 2007

I am new to Reporting Services and hope that what I am looking to do is within capabilities :-)

I have many identical schema databases residing on a number of data servers. These support individual clients accessing them via a web interface. What I need to be able to do is run reports across all of the databases. So the layout is:

Dataserver A

Database A1

Database A2

Database A3

Dataserver B

Database B1

Database B2

Dataserver C

Database C1

Database C2

Database C3

I would like to run a report that pulls table data from A1, A2, A3, B1, B2, C1, C2, C3

Now the actual number of servers is 7 and the number of databases is close to 1000. All servers are running SQL2005.

Is this something that Reporting Services is able to handle or do I need to look at some other solution?

Thanks,

Michael

Execution In Scheduled Job Vs Direct Execution

Here's my case, I have written a stored procedure which will perform the following:
1. Grab data from a table using cursor,
2. Process data,
3. Write the result into another table

If I execute the stored procedure directly (thru VS.NET, or Query Analyser), it will run, but when I tried to execute it via a scheduled job, it fails.

I used the same record, same parameters, and the same statements to call the stored procedure.

Any idea?

DTSRUN: To Multi-tier Or Not To Multi-tier. That Is The Question...

Greetings,We are trying to set up a set of "Leading Practices" for ourdevelopers, as well as ourselves, and hope some gentle reader canrecommend some documentation in favor of what appears to be the rightposition to take.We do not allow third party applications to run on our SQL Servers. Wewant to include DTS Packages under the definition of third partyapplications, insisting instead that the developers save theirpackages as COM Formatted files into their source code control systemsand run them from their app servers. The devlopers would like to hearthis from someone besides ourselves. While strong recomendations to remove guest access to MSDB altogetherabound, I have been unable to find a straight forward discussion ofthe advantages of structured file storage and app server off load ofDTS packages. Can anyone suggest any articles, white papers, rants, etc attemptingto formulate a solution to the benefits of taking msdb away fromguest, with the advantages of running DTS from an App server orworkstation platform, with the packages protected in source codecontrol?Thank youJohn Pollinsjpollins @ eqt . com

Multi-Value Query

Jul 7, 2004

I have a search form that takes 5 inputs from textboxes or Drop Down Lists.

I built a query that works just fine in Analyizer, but the second i try to turn it into a sproc that takes parameters I can only get it to work with one parameter so far....

Here is the query that works just fine

Select ftr_location.loc_name, ftr_file.loc_id, ftr_file.file_date, ftr_file.file_type_id, ftr_file.acct_no,
ftr_file.cust_fname, ftr_file.cust_lname, ftr_status.status_name, ftr_file.destruction_date

FROM dbo.ftr_file

Inner Join ftr_location On ftr_location.loc_id = ftr_file.loc_id
Inner Join ftr_Status On ftr_status.status_id = ftr_file.status_id
Inner Join ftr_doc_types on ftr_doc_types.file_type_id = ftr_file.file_type_id

WHERE ftr_file.Loc_id = 18 and ftr_file.file_date= '12/4/2004'

GO

The sproc version that I cant get to work is:

CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.usp_ftr_searchfile_s

(
@ResultLocation int = null,
@ResultFileDate datetime = null
)

AS

DECLARE @SQLString VARCHAR(4000)

SET @SQLString = 'Select ftr_location.loc_name, ftr_file.loc_id, ftr_file.file_date, ftr_file.file_type_id, ftr_file.acct_no,'+
'ftr_file.cust_fname, ftr_file.cust_lname, ftr_status.status_name, ftr_file.destruction_date' +

' FROM dbo.ftr_file' +

' Inner Join ftr_location On ftr_location.loc_id = ftr_file.loc_id' +
' Inner Join ftr_Status On ftr_status.status_id = ftr_file.status_id' +
' Inner Join ftr_doc_types on ftr_doc_types.file_type_id = ftr_file.file_type_id' +
' WHERE 1=1 '

If @ResultLocation Is Not Null
Set @SQLString = @SQLString + 'And ftr_file.loc_id=' + cast @ResultLocation
If @ResultLocation Is Not Null
Set @SQLString = @SQLString + 'And ftr_file.file_date=' + cast @ResultFileDate

EXEC (@SQLString)
GO

Any feedback would be most helpful, as I can get it to work with one parameter but not when I add teh second in the mix.

WHERE (tblTemp.TempTime BETWEEN @From AND @To)
AND (tblTemp.SensorID IN (@Sensor))
ORDER BY tblTemp.TempTime

@Sensor is populated in vb with the selected values from a checkboxlist control.  I attempted to test this in the "Data Adapter Preview" window, but continually get an error.  Is there a way to pass multiple values to a parameter?
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
