The best I have managed to achieve is to get SQL2K5 EM looking at my SQL2K databases.
Do I need to uninstall SQL2K before installing SQL2K?
Depending on what combo of SQL I have installed my options on SQL2K install vary.
I am a bit lost at this point.
Anyone know a link to a good white paper type doc that guides me through an install on the same machine.

We currently have multiple instances of MS Sql 2000 and MS SQL 2005 installed on servers. When at other locations that uses different subnets only the default instance is available, published, broadcasted, selectable.
We have TCPIP and name pipes enabled for all instances. This seems to be a common problem for all locations.
hello, what is the general consensus on installing SQL 2005. I usually run a backup of SQL 2000 dbs and then restore on SQL 2005 and change compatibility to 9.0. Is it the right way to upgrade? I'm only asking because I also did one db in-place to SQL 2005 and thought it went well until I browsed my system dbs. All of them are missing tables that usually appear in SQL 2005 system dbs. Other than that I haven't run into too many problems.

We have 5 instances on our clients old machine with SQL 2005, now they want us to move on cluster environment with SQL 2012.
Once I have installed and configured SQL cluster with single instance, but how to install SQL Cluster environment for Multiple instances.
Should I install all the instances first and than have to configure cluster ?

Is there any way that first I will install cluster and than we can add the instances ?

I have found no real documentation on this, so any links would be greatly appreciated.
We have an existing 2 node active active cluster.
A default and and named instance SS2005 Enterprise Edition are installed on the cluster.
Recently we acquired new hardware, 2 servers, which we added to the cluster so we now have a 4 node cluster.
The 2 new nodes have OS etc installed.
Now i have installed sql on a new multi node cluster, i have upgraded sql server in an existing cluster BUT i have never installed sql on an existing cluster for new nodes for multiple instances.
Now i presume you simply run the install on one of the new nodes, do this for a default instance, selecting both 2 new nodes to installl on. And do this again for the named instance.
But in the past I have never been promoted for which nodes to install sql on, it simply does all the nodes BUT i do not want this.
And how will the cluster know where the binary files are for each instance on the new nodes?
In a nutshell, how do i install sql server 2005 for 2 new nodes in an existing 4 node cluster for multiple instances ?

I need to put sql server 2000 enterprise and sql server 7 on the same box. For multiple instancing is it better to run with Win 2k Pro Server or Advanced Server. Please Elaborate.

I am trying to install multi instances on my server cluster 2003 R2 Sp2. Because of the compatibility issues with my services I need to install both SQL 2000 and 2005. With 2000 I can easily specify the instance and servername. The server name can be the same, but the instance has to be different. Is this true for 2005? I have found so far that for every new instance that you create that you need to have a different virtual server name. How can you utilize the same virtual name and have multi insances

Has anyone run SQL 2005 Standard Edition, 2 or more instances on one server... where you got the extended memory up to 2.8 GB on EACH instance of SQL Server? I've done the 2.8GB game on boxes with ONE instance, but don't think I tried it on a multi-instance box, to get the 2.8GB RAM each. Thanks, Bruce

We don't use port 1433 and the port we do use is blocked at the firewall. I'd like to standardize on one port for all instances but I'm not sure of the ramifications. Any thoughts?

I am trying to upgrade SQL 2000 SP3 to SQL 2005 SP2 on a Windows 2003 server with all the latest patches. The SQL 2005 install went through like it was supposed to but when it was nearly finished it gave the message:
" there was an unexpected failiure during the setup wizard. You may review the setup logs and/or click the help button for more info". I'm pretty new to Microsoft SQL so I looked at help and there was no information.
I've tried running setup again and keep getting the above error message. During the install the program says everthing is installed but I've noticed the Management Center is missing.
We have an x86 sql 2000 server with 4GB of RAM, a quadcore Xeon, a RAID 5 drive C, and its utilization is generally low. Typical perfmon counters: CPU < 5%; available Mbytes, 1800; typical disk time 5-10 %; Committed bytes in use < 25%, pagessec near 0.0.
For various reasons I need to install a sql 2005 instance on the same box and both instances will be up and running at the same time.
How, using Perfmon (?), can I determine the max amount of memory to assign to each instance? (It is my understanding that I definitiely need to limit the amount of RAM used by each instance.)

We would like to install Sql 2005 Enterprise Edition (including database engine, reporting service, integration service and analysis service) as a sepearte instance on a server which already has Sql 2000 with reporting services and analysis services. We do not want to disturb the existing sql 2000 setup.
If we do that then what will happen to my earlier sql 2000 reporting service? Will it be upgraded to sql 2005 reporting service? I heard that reporting services are instance unaware application. Where will be the default reporting service database available?

My client has a server running MS 2003 Server for Smal Business Server, and it has SQL Server Express 2005 installed (I believe it is installed 3 times, as part of SharePoint, Veritas Backup Exec and ACT! applications).
I am trying to implement an application that uses SQL Server 2000, but the Server 2003 SBS does not support that version. So I need to launch an additional instance of SQL Server Exp 2005.
To do so, do I need to download and install SQL Server Express 2005 software again? Or can I just run SQLSVR.exe from an existing instance, but with a different instance name (sqlservr.exe -s<InstanceName>?
The reason I need another instance is that these existing instances limit DDL statements.
I am new to this and compare it to launching MS Word multiple times - you don't need to reinstall Word to run it multiple times.
Is launching from the command line a bad idea - and if it is, what is the better way to ensure that it launches under the local system context a service?

I have a stored procedure that creates a temporary table, and then populates it using an INSERT and then a series of UPDATE statements. The procedure then returns the temporary table which will contain data in all of its columns.
When I call this procedure from SSRS 2005, the rowset returned contains data in only those columns that are populated by the INSERT statement. The columns that are set via the UPDATE statements are all empty. I read (in the Hitchhikers Guide to Reporting Services) that SSRS will only process the first rowset in a stored procedure that generates multiple rowsets. Is this true? Is this why SSRS does not retrieve data for the columns that are populated by the UPDATE statements?

I had a server with SQL Server 7.0
I installed a named instance of SQL Server 2000 and then i passed all my DB
of the 7.0 instance to the 2000 instance.
Then i removed the 7.0 instance, that was the default instance.
So at the moment there is only the 2000 version, but it isn't the default
instance
Can the 2000 instance become the default instance? (So that clients can
connect to it simply through computer name, and not creating an alias)

We have (after several weeks of testing in all kind of environments) send out a new version of our application to several of our customers. Within days problems where drippin in; After looking for the problem on various customer situations we found a problem which I think is rather disturbing and very odd. I'll describe the situation, on which we finally managed to recreate the problem, here.
In my problem I use the following configuration:
Windows 2003 (standard edition) AD network with 2 domain controllers, multiple Windows XP workstations, some without SQL instances, some with SQL 2000 instances, some with SQL 2005 instances and even one with SQL 7 running.
All run a 32 bit OS.
Tools to reproduce:
ListSQLSvr application (found on SQLDev.net) to enumerate the instances.
Problem description:

I am running the machine called DEV001, which has SQL 2000 (instancename DRUMIS) and SQL 7.0 (has no instancename so this is the root instance) installed.

Notice now that ALL instances are gone and no extended information is available. In the Query Analyser and in the SQL Management Studio when browsing you'll see this as well!
When someone is accessing a database instance it appears for a few seconds again.
Since our installation and applications rely on selecting a existing instance it will fail in the above situations (or at least not showing all available instances).
In my opinion this is a bug somewhere!
Note that even when the SQL Services are stopped on DEV002 (leaving the Browser service running) it still seems to block out ALL instance on the ENTIRE network!
I don't mind that one INSTANCE or even the entire MACHINE is hidden from the network, but ALL instances on ALL machines??
And the SQL Browser issue also worries me a bit since it does not stop the possibily to browse the SQL instances; it removes the SQL2000 instances but adds a root instance which doesn't even exist! Also the extended info is stripped.
Can anyone help me solve this/advise?
Also mind that in any situation there might run a lot of computers with a lot of SQL instances and I cannot tell our customers to find which machine has the SQL TCP/IP properties set to Hide...
It even seems that in some situations SBS 2003 does the hiding automatically on Install? And if so, when and why?

I have a project where I have to upgrade SQL 2000 to 2005. When we are upgrading we are going to move to new server so server name will change. Most of our applications have a hard coded connection string. Applications are developed with Classic ASP, .NET 1.1 and 2.0 as well.
Now the question is what is the best way to do this? Changing all the connection string will be a very painful task as we have many applications.
Can anyone suggest a way where we can achieve this without changing all the connection strings?

I have a sql 2000/2005 side-by-side install on a single server. I right-click a sql 2000 database, select All Tasks, and the Copy Database to upgrade a sql 2000 database. In the "Copy Database Wizard" I see the message:
"To use the detach and attach method SQL Server Agent must run under an Integration Servicers Proxy account that can access the file system of both the source and destination servers."
1. What does that mean?
2. I decided to click "Finish" in the wizard, and the database copy seemed to work fine. Whaterver 1) means does, by default, the SQL Server Agent already run under this "Integration Services Proxy" account. (Rememberr the upgrade process did work).

I got a requirement to upgrade only One SQL 2000 to SQL 2005 server. i did check that there are only databases in this server along with Linked server. I am looking for a best practice document for SQL upgrade and any thoughts or experience any one has faced during upgrade.
Other question is what about if there is a DTS on the server. right now on this particular server there is no DTS but in coming weeks i may need to upgrade other server which is having DTS as well. I have worked alot on SSIS packages but want to see if DTS will be converted to SSIS packages or i will have to manually do it.

We have 2 .net 1.1 applications using Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition. To connect to database we are using nHibernate 0.6 for one application and Microsoft Enterprise Library Data Blocks Ver 1.0 in another.
We are planning to upgrade SQL servers of both applications to SQL 2005 Enterprise edition and retain .net 1.1 framework. Are nHibernate 0.6 and Microsoft Enterprise Library 1.0 data blocks compatible with the SQL 2005? Are any upgrades required for these as well?
We ran SQL upgrade advisor report on these applications, there weren't any changes to table/ stored procs suggested. Could that mean that the existing table design and stored procs are compatible with SQL 2005?

But I can download sql server 2000 dts deginer components on our new sql 2005 database server before I upgrade. Then when I restore my sql 2000 database on our new 2005 server, eveything would be OK? I am not sure if my understanding is correct.
My advisor is on my local computer and I am running analysis against a remote database(on our intranet),€œSQL Server 2000 DTS Designer Components,€? should be intalled on my local computer or remote database server? what steps I should take in order to retain my dts package or transform it into something else?
can you shed light on me?
