Can Two SQL 2005 Servers Look At The Same Instance

Nov 15, 2007

I been away fromm SQL administration for three years, back then I used sqlteam.com as a valuable resource. My question has to do with SQL 2005. Can the new version of SQL 2005 share an instance of a database (for example an instance in a SAN drive)with more then one SQL server.

Thanks

After Installation On Vista, No Instance Or Servers

Oct 3, 2007

Just installed SQL Server 2005 Enterprise onto Vista 64bit (while i have my UAC turned off)
After installing SQL Server, I setup SQL SP2 and then run up SQL Server Management Studio and attempted to connect to the localserver. The problem is that there appears to be no local server. No instance or Database Engine.

In addition, none of the services appear to have been installed, or at least I cannot see
them from services.msc and there has been no management snap-in added
to the services and applications area of the computer management tool
(Manage from the My Computer icon).

What am i doing wrong?

SQL 2012 :: Multiple Database Servers - One Instance Name

Apr 24, 2014

Scenerio : To keep a very large system running optimally in a VM cluster, Take PR01 and make PR02, PR03, PR04. Distribute the 45 databases and 9T+ of disk across multiple VM guest.

Each PR## is a SQL Server 2012 Enterprise guest on a VM 5.1 cluster.

So instead of PR01 needed 16 core and 128g of memory, each one will have 4 core and 32g of memory. Making VM HA more manageable. (yes, DRS rules will apply). Also provides more HBA paths and distributes i/o over more physical disk on the SAN.

Instead of a connection string having to know PR01.dbo.UserDB01, PR02.dbo.UserDB03, ect the connection would be PRDB.dbo.UserDB01. That way if needed 1) UserDB can be moved to any of the PR## 2) new PR05, PR06 can be added as needed. The end user and processes are not allowed to touch system databases, no PR## will have a user DB called the same name.

There are seperate VM guests on other VM clusters and Citrix servers that need access to PRDB. As things expand and move around, none of the connection strings need to be changed.

I am looking into RadWare and modifing level 7 information, but that is iffy and $$$$$$.

Linking SQL 2005 Servers To SQL 2000 Servers Problems

Sep 27, 2007

I am in the middle of a major migraton project, moving from x86 SQL 2000 to IA64 SQL 2005. I have a business need to link to several legacy servers. I have a number of problems I am trying to solve.

1) Linking a Kerberos server to a non-Kerberos server.
2) Linking x64 or IA64 servers to x86 servers.
3) Linking SQL 2005 to SQL 2000.

Two of the errors I am encountering are:
------------------------------
TCP Provider: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.
Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "SCDC250DB" returned message "Communication link failure".
(Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 10054)
------------------------------
And
------------------------------
The OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for the linked server "SCDC250DB" reported an error. Authentication failed.
Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "SCDC250DB".
OLE DB provider "SQLCLI" for linked server "SCDC250DB" returned message "Invalid authorization specification".
(Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 7399)

If someone has worked through these problems before, I would appreciate it if you could direct me to the relevant documentation to resolve these issues.

Thanks!

Connection String For Default Instance Of SQL Server 2005, On A Box Also Running A Named Instance Of SQL Server 2000

Nov 15, 2007

The box I am trying to connect to is running two instances of SQL Server.
There is a SQL Server 2005 instance which is the default. There is a SQL Server 2000 instance which is named 'SQLSERVER'.
 I can connect to the SQL Server 2000 instance no problem:<add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPCSQLSERVER;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" />
However,  I am having trouble connecting to the Default SQL Server 2005 instance. I have tried:
<add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPC;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" />
but it doesn't work. I have tried explicitly setting SQL Server 2005 to use port 1434 (as SQL Server 2000 is running on port 1433), and then used:
<add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPC,1434;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" />
but this doesn't work either.

Am I mssing something here? Any help much appreciated
Thanks...

Integration Of 2 SQL 2005 DB Servers

Dec 12, 2006

Hi,

I have 2 database servers and each has same database.Program that inserts these databases randomly selects one of them to insert data.So only difference is data.

I have to generate some report using these 2 sources.System administrators reject integrating these 2 servers into one.

My question is , I want to run a query that looks the column x in table y and finds unique records in this table. But this works just in one DB.What do you recommend me to find solution that finds real unique records, i.e. looks both servers to find records.

Is there a Microsoft product that may be configured brain of different DB Servers or any other solution?

I have also memory restrictions and data is considered as more than 100 GBytes for each server.

Answers will be highly appreciated.

Thanks.

Linked Servers In Microsoft SQL 2005

Mar 25, 2008

Hi,

I have:
- SQL 2005 Dev on machine A
- SQL 2005 Dev on machine B

I've made a linked server from A to B using:
- Windows authentication
- SQL Server authentication

However, I ran into the following "problems":

- When creating a linked server from A to B, when I do a "new linked server" I have to give it the same name as machine B.
- Therefore, I can only make one linked server to B (not f.ex. make two, one Windows authentication and one SQL Server authentication).

Is it only possable to make one linked server to a machine running SQL Server 2005?

Thank you.

New SQL Server 2005 Instance

Hi,

I am trying to install a new SQL Server 2005 instance. When running the
setup I get a warning related to "Edition Change Check" that advises
me to run setup with SKUUPGRADE=1. I already have SQL 2005 with SP 1 installed.
For the new instance that I am trying to install I use the SQL Server 2005
media without sp1. What do I do? Ignore the warning and at the end reapply SP1?

One Instance In Express 2005

Oct 18, 2007

Hello everybody, on my first post on this forum

I just installed SQL Server Express 2005 (server) and created default instance SQLEXPRESS, so that, when I want to access in remote mode, the server conn string is: <servername>SQLEXPRESS

But I have been told there is one way to configure SQL Server so that only one instance is allowed, so you dont need to specify any. If this was true, I would only need to give 'servername' to access remotely.

Is this true? How can I achieve this? Will it be possible to doing it after having installed software, or do I have to uninstall and install it again?

Sorry if this is too basic, I am just having first contact with SQL Server

Thanks very much for your help!!!

Want To Load Balance And Cluster 3 SQL 2005 Servers

Oct 9, 2007

Currently we have a single SQL server. It went down and the higher ups were none to happy. Lots of money lost, down time, unhappy customers....the whole nine yards. They want to throw all sorts of money at the problem and want a solution that is high availability and provides load balancing. I think I came up with a solution.

3x Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition servers running SQL 2005 Standard in a cluster all connected to a SAN.

I'm guessing I need to set up Network Load Balancing in order to load balance the SQL database. What we would love to have happen is if one of the servers goes down, everything else just picks up. That coupled with our database that is increasing in size and transactions gets load balanced.

Am I going down the right path? Something else I should look at? Or that I am missing?

Thanks!

Sql 2005 To Sql 2000 Linked Servers Problem.

Jul 25, 2006

We have two sql servers using Windows authentication. One is sql 2000 the other sql 2005. When logged in as "sa", I can link these servers and run a SELECT distributed query without any problem.

But when one of our developers runs the same query (he is "dbo" of each database on each of the servers) he gets the error:

"OLE DB Provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server <Servername> returned message "Communication Link Failure"
...
Login failed for user '(null'). reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection"

Despite that, I, as "sa" equivalent, have no problem so it appears to be a permisisons issue. Any ideas what is going on here?

SQL 2005 Log-shipping/replication Linked Servers

Aug 9, 2007

I am having trouble finding any documentation on how linked servers are set-up under SQL 2005 for log-shipping and replication. Under SQL 2000, the only linked servers "visible" were ones that were user-defined. Under SQL 2005, it seems when you set-up log-shipping or replication, you get these new linked servers which are automatically defined. I would like to understand them and in particular, how security is maintained. We recently had a production issue where after some problem with a server which resulted in having to restart SQL Server, and shrink msdb, log-shipping started to fail authentication when trying to run alert jobs. Only after rebooting the server, and also the log-ship target server, and waiting 9 hours, did the authentication correct itself. I would like to know how it resolved itself and what took so long?

SQLNCLI Errors With Sql 2005 Linker Servers

Dec 5, 2006

Hi,

I am trying to setup up a linked server in our test environment that allows Server A to run a stored procedure that writes to server B. However, I am receiving the following errors when attempting to make the connection and execute the stored procedure.

OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "TEST2" returned message "Invalid authorization specification".
Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Procedure Test_SP, Line 230
The OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "TEST2" reported an error. Authentication failed.
Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Procedure Test_SP, Line 230
Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "TEST2".

I've created a user (linkuser) that has db_reader/db_writer access to the destination box. I'm using SQL Server under the Server type on the General Tab. I've added the user(linkuser) as the local login to impersonate on the destination box. However, the stored procedure is still erroring. Any Suggestions?

Thanks,

Enumerating SQL Server 2005 Servers From The Network

Mar 6, 2008

Hi,

I need to find out whether SQL Server client components are installed on a machine through my application.

For that I was expecting "SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90" registry key. BUT If I install just native client drivers, this key is not getting created.

What could be another approch to determine whether system has required client components.

Also I need to list all the SQL Server 2005 servers available in the network. (Similar to the Servers combo box being populated while DSN creation in ODBC Admin tool). There are several approches.

1) Use NetServerEnum API
2) Use SQLBrowseConnect ODBC API
3) Use SQLDMO Object
4) OSQL utility.

Which one I should use VC++ (2005)?

Thanks in advance,
Mac

We do not want to disturb the existing sql 2000 setup.

If we do that then what will happen to my earlier sql 2000 reporting service? Will it be upgraded to sql 2005 reporting service? I heard that reporting services are instance unaware application. Where will be the default reporting service database available?

The instance will not start because it says one of the files does not match it's primary file (not sure if it's model or msdb)

I can bring the instance up in single user mode (NET START mssqlserver /f /t3608) but when I try to do a query to re-do my alter statements, it says i can't attach because only one seesion is allowed. in 2000 i used to be able to start query analyzer without starting enterprise manager..

When i try and start with a minimal config (sqlservr -c -m) it won't start. I get an error saying that one of my files does not match it's primary file (either model or msbd don't know which) any ideas????????

What do i place in the <NewSystemCollation> in order to get the collation above installed?
