I have a table called dbo.test. This table is built with two columns, namely; col_id and col_name.. Now, I want col_id to be auto-populated when a new col_name is added. But the col_id - should be of formulae xyyyy
where x = 2
and yyyy = will be incremental
Therefore, the first 3 records will be like ;
col_id Col_name 20001 A 20002 B 20003 C ...... ...... and so on
Now, is there a way SQL can auto-populate teh col_id whenever a col_name is added?

Hello, I have a table (publication) that has a primary key pubID which is an identity specification. This ID already has relationships to other tables. I am having problems trying to make one of the other columns in the same table to auto generate. This column (bibNumber) is not related to any other table. All i want to do is when i create a new record in the table, auto generate a number for this column bibNumber. How can i do this? I am using sql server express 2005 Regards
Is there an easy way to generate the parameters code for calling stored procedures?
Is there an easy way to generate stored procedure code without having to manually type it in? I've seen 3rd party tools, but I was wondering if there's anything within Sql Server to do it.
I'm using c#, visual studio 2005, sql server 2005.
Hi, in Access, I can use an Auto-Increment number for my primary key field. May I know how do I do that in SQL Express?
In addition, is there any tutorial on how to use SQL Express to generate customised unique numbers (such as membership number, Customer ID such as A001 where A is based on the customer's name while 001 is due to the fact that the customer is the first among those with names starting with A)?
hi there. i'm using asp.net 2 page i'm accessing a table consists of 100 thousands rows and its slow and i'm wondering instead of accessing directly to the table how about if i access via xml ? generate xml and cache it and use the xml file rather going to sql server database? has anybody have any help on this? the steps invloved: 1) first generate a xml file from table something like this: select * from dbo.LOOK_UP FOR XML AUTO, XMLDATA ?SELECT * FROM dbo.LOOK_UP FOR XML RAW, ELEMENTS ?SELECT * FROM dbo.LOOK_UP FOR XML AUTO ? which one should i use and how do i access after i gnerate a xml file
I had thought that I had posted this yesterday but since I cannot findit here we go again.I have searched the archives but either the code I want is not postedor I missed it.I have a user create role in a database that I need to reproduce inanother version of the database. Does anyone out there have the SQLor T-SQL necessary to generate all the grants to a role?-- Mark D Powell --
1) I have a report with many parameters that I want users to be able to pick from. Allow them to pick 1, many or all to build their report dynamically. I'm all set on the TSQL side, but on the Reporting Services side I have to allow each parameter to be null with a default of NULL. In by doing this, the report will auto run, which I do not want to happen. The only resolution I've found thus far was by adding a parameter that does nothing, with a NULL default value. Yet It sticks out like a sore thumb on the report and I want to get rid of it. If I check in "Hidden" in the parameter options, my report errors out stating that the parameter requires a value.
2) Is it possible to have a parameter that has available values from a dataset have a NULL checkbox like those of parameters that do not have available values?
3) Is it possible to add back/forward buttons inside of a report instead of just at the report header by default?
If there was a view that joined 2 tables and I accessed the view the 2 ID fields in the view would still have the AutoIncrement attribute still set to true so that I knew those were Identity fields.
In SQL server 2005
I dont' know why but if you reference a View that has Identiy AutoInc fields in ADO it doesn't keep those properties.
Also for whatever reason we Set the ID field to 0 to let ourselves know its a new Record. SQL 2000 let it happen and assumed it to be null where as By Setting the ID to 0 in SQL 2005 causes it to blow up on me.
Is there some sort of setting in SQL that can make SQL 2005 work like SQL 2000 in these two instances...
Karikalan writes "We need alpha numeric auto increment code in sql server 2000. (for eg.: ico1001, ico1002, ico1003,......) Can any one send the code in MS sql server 2000? plz .................. bcoz i am beginner in sqlserver 2000"
After deleting all the test data from all tables in a SQL 2000 database, is there a way to reset all the auto-incrementing fields back to zero in one shot? In Access, you can run the Compact and Repair option. Also, in Sybase SQL, there was an "unload/reload" option to reduce the database size. Is there a similar function in SQL2000? Thanks for all the help
Hello, I have the following table with 4 columns....firstname, lastname1, lastname2, EMAILTable has user names and email, I would like to generate a 5th columncalled DisplayName. The email Id is sometimes firstname.lastname1.lastname2@ and othersjust firstname.lastname1@I would like to generate the display name exactly like the email egfirstname.lastname1.lastname2@ displayName = firstname lastname1lastname2......so for james.smith display name = James Smith and forjames.earl.smith displayName = James Earl Smith etc etcIs there a way that I can check/compare email Id (before the @ part)with firstname, lastname1 and lastname2 and generate a display namebased on what was used for the email address?I hope I've explained this well :-)Many thanks in advance for any help/adviseYas
Can Ne1 tell me how to reset the auto increment colum of a table in the Microsoft Data Engine??, Does ne1 know where to find a free MSDE administration utility.
I am using a Data Flow task which copies data from an Excel Source to a SQL Database Table Destination. From 15 columns I require only 10 columns to be imported to the DB Table. So I have mapped those colums. In SQL DB there is a colum called say X, whose value should be the "Remedy" for all the columns which are imported. Is there any task that can achieve it.
I have 5 different tables with same structure. Each table has an account column and another column count. I am trying to generate a report based of the columns in each table. Account is same in all tables with same account numbers but count will be different.
Hi Gnite everyone, i once again need help with a T-SQL syntax for Auto Correction for insert and update when client enters the wrong format, i;e, creating a SSN Data type and a User Defined Procedure that auto corrects input format i;e, user inserts into table authors of the pubs DB 525-477845 column au_id that executes auto correction so user doesn't have to put in dashes for SSN format. Please help me with this syntax .
I'm trying to use the Import/Export Wizard as I used to, as a handy tool to figure out what a series of T-SQL statements (in an SSIS package) is doing - or, if I'm lucky, what on earth the original dev intended them to do.
Version: SQL 2014 64-bit running on Win 7 64-bit
The code is pretty dreadful:
SELECT DISTINCT on one set of column names, join this set to another table but not on exactly the same set of column names, embedded (SELECT MAX(bla) FROM SameTable WHERE [match to outer set on another set of columns] GROUP BY [hey, yet another set of columns!]) inside the SELECT column list... and it all goes to a nasty #Tmp, which is then abused with further bad code further down.
Imp/Exp is always handy to quickly get the intermediate results into an auto-created real table, so I can figure out exactly what the effect of this is. I use it to export from the database back to the same database, but to a persisted table.
This time (first time with SQL2014) it's not working. The source is "write a query" (paste the actual query). The destination I set to a new table. The auto-generation of the new table creates every column as type date. Not surprisingly, this doesn't work, as the original data is mostly not of date time.
I ran the following query in Query Analyzer for a 7 column table.SELECT c.name,c.colid FROM syscolumns c WHERE c.id=925962375 ORDER BYc.colidThe results were:I_CSD 1X_STE_XML2I_USR_LCK4T_CRT_RCD5I_USR_CRT_RCD6T_UDT_RCD7I_USR_UDT_RCD8If I use the information_schema view (SELECT column_name,ordinal_position FROM information_schema.columns WHERE table_name ='CSD_XML') I get the same results. The problem is that the colids go from 2 to 4 and the colids gothrough 8 when there are only 7 columns. At one time there was another column in the table, but it has sincebeen dropped and isn't there anymore. It seems that the colids insyscolumns did not update when the column was dropped. Is this because of the way I dropped the column? Is there anything Ican do now that it has happened?
i was using sql 2000, the database contains 500+ tables, 3000+ sp. i moved to sql 2005 and found problem on generating script (right click database -> tasks -> generate scripts). i need to generate the table relations.... it is very very slow compared to sql 2000 which is done in about 30 seconds to few minutes. i already tried many ways including set options to false which in my thought could speed up a lot...but still very slow.
average generate script time with sql 2005 (sp 2): 70-90 minutes. average generate script time with sql 2000 (sp 4): 2-3 minutes.
Hello everybody,I was configuring a SqlDataSource control using SQL Authentication mode.I first added a database file (testdb.mdf) through Solution Explorer-Add New Items. Then through Database Explorer I created a table named "info"Then while configuring the SqlDataSource control I used the SQL Authentication mode and attached the "testdb.mdf" database file.Test Connection showed success. But when I hit the Ok button of the wizard it displayed the following error message:Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server. Only an integrated connection can generate a user instance. While configuring the SqlDataSource control I clicked "New Connection". Under Data Source section I tried both Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft SQL Server Database File. And in both the cases I attached a databese file(testdb.mdf). Plz enlighten me on this. Thanks and Regards,Sankar.
Since upgrading from SQL Server Management Studio 2008 R2, I've noticed that it no longer autosaves queries that have not been manually saved first. If a file has been manually saved the autorecover files end up in the following directory:
%appdata%MicrosoftSQL Server Management Studio11.0AutoRecoverDatSolution1
However, I have ended up in the situation where I have unsaved queries when my computer has crashed and have not been able to recover them.
I have also found references to .sql files stored in temp files in the following directory, but the files here seem to be very haphazardly caught:
I Have a table that needs to have 2 unique number.
detail_id and detail_print_id.
detail_id is already an IDENTITY.
both fields need to be different, because when importing, it imports the same data into a table twice, with only a slight data change (and id is not one of the changes).
So I thought i could do the following:
detail_id INT NOT NULL IDENTITY(1,2), detail_print_id INT NOT NULL IDENTITY(2,2), --blah blah
that way, the detail_id will always be odd, and the detail_print_id will always be even. however SQL Server 2005 only allows 1 identity per table, and both these fields need to be auto generated when the field is inserted, so as to prevent double data.
is there anyway I can create a int column to auto increment, without the column being an IDENTITY??
also, I would prefer to not have to create a second table with a single column just for this work.
I have an MS SQL Server table with a Job Number field I need this field to start at a certain number then auto increment from there. Is there a way to do this programatically or within MSDE?
Here is My requirement, I'm not sure if this is possible. Creating table called master like col1, col2 col3, col4 , col5 ...Where Col1, col2 are updatable - this can be done easily
Col3, col4 are columns in another table but these can be just a read only ?? Is this possible ? this is possible with View but not friendly with share point CRUD...Col 5 is a computed column of col 2 and col5 ? if above step can be done then sure this can be done I guess.
