Conversion Failed When Converting Character String To Smalldatetime Data Type

Oct 3, 2007

I am running the following query:
select distinct hqvend, hqvprd, fprod, idesc, ilead, sum(cast(fqty as int) )as fqty, (cast(hqvend as varchar(5))+'/'+ltrim(rtrim(fprod))+'/'+cast(ilead as varchar(3))) as Keydata,'L1/'+rtrim(fprod) as LocPartno from tblkfpl01 inner join hqtl01 on (fprod=hqprod) inner join iiml01 on (hqvend=ivend and hqprod=iprod) where  cast(cast(hqeff as varchar(8)) as smalldatetime) <= (Select CONVERT(varchar(8), getdate(), 1)) and  cast(HQDIS as varchar(8)) >= (Select CONVERT(varchar(8), getdate(), 1))  and hqvend like '134%' group by hqvend, fprod, hqvprd, idesc, ilead   order by hqvend, fprod
The bold sections are giving me the error message. The query works as written above, butis only evaluating on one date, contained in hqeff. However, when I try to modify the second date, HQDIS, by casting it the same way as the one before it:
select distinct hqvend, hqvprd, fprod, idesc, ilead, sum(cast(fqty as int) )as fqty, (cast(hqvend as varchar(5))+'/'+ltrim(rtrim(fprod))+'/'+cast(ilead as varchar(3))) as Keydata,'L1/'+rtrim(fprod) as LocPartno from tblkfpl01 inner join hqtl01 on (fprod=hqprod) inner join iiml01 on (hqvend=ivend and hqprod=iprod) where  cast(cast(hqeff as varchar(8)) as smalldatetime) <= (Select CONVERT(varchar(8), getdate(), 1)) and  cast(cast(HQDIS as varchar(8)) as smalldatetime) >= (Select CONVERT(varchar(8), getdate(), 1))  and hqvend like '134%' group by hqvend, fprod, hqvprd, idesc, ilead   order by hqvend, fprod
I get the error message. I need to select based on both dates (hqeff AND HQDIS), but cannot seem to be able to it.... Both fields are of type Dedimal, with a length of 8, and dates stored in them look like: 20071003 (YYYYMMDD).
Any suggestions?

Msg 295, Level 16, State 3, Line 25: Conversion failed when converting character string to small date-time data type..I am converting from a character string to smalldatetime since the source and target date columns are "smalldatetime". SSIS - Data Conversion Failed - The Value Could Not Be Converted Because Of A Potential Loss Of Data.

Aug 3, 2006

Hello

I have an odd problem that is driving me nutz. I have a very simple SSIS package that imports a 5 colum flatfile into a sql Server 2005 Table.

When I created this package with the wizzard, it will execute perfectly fine and processes all rows into the destination table.

But when I hit F5 to execute it manually it will fail before inserting a single row.

The error it generates is (Spalte 5 is a Datetime in the format DD.MM.YYYY) :

Error: 0xC02020A1 at Datenflusstask, Source - Daten_NC_1_txt [1]: Data conversion failed. The data conversion for column "Spalte 5" returned status value 2 and status text "The value could not be converted because of a potential loss of data.".

Character Conversion

Dec 8, 2004

Hi,

I'm using an ETL tool called DecisionStream.

On a particular SQL Server, when it performs an insert, the degree character is being converted to a stacked bar:

source data: 1332 NS 4° Tall 32 oz
after insert: 1332 NS 4¦ Tall 32 oz

This works fine on my laptop with SQL Server, but for some reason, on the SQL Server at work, this behaviour occurs.

Any input would be great.

thanks,

BCP Character Conversion

Feb 8, 2005

I bcped in data into a database with SQL_Latin1_General_Cp1_CI_AS collation. The input data has an embedded character ®(ascii 174). I did not specify any code page using the -C parm. The data was converted to character «(ascii 171). I ran the bcp trying -C1252 and -CRAW and both maintained the correct character. -C437 and -COEM change the character to «.
Why did this happen? I thought that data would be converted to correctly without any code page specification.

Special Character Problems With SSIS Data Reader Using ODBC Driver For DB2

Sep 5, 2007

Hi,
in SSIS I read data from a DB2 database on AS400 using the Client Access ODBC Driver for DB2 from IBM and write it to a SQL Server database. Since it does not work using the odbc driver as data source directly, I use a data reader component with .net providersodbc.
Some special characters were not translated correctly when read from DB2. They show up as ? in the SQL Server target table.

I tried to change the client locale in the ODBC connection properties but it did not help me. I tried changing all other settings in odbc but it still does not work.

In dts I could source all the data without this problems and good speed using the same nodbc driver.

The OLEDB Providers delivered with SSIS do not work in SSIS or I am too stupid to configure them correctly. They are even too slow as I explained above.

I cannot use the MS OLEDB Provider for DB2, because it works only in Enterprize Edition and we only have the Standard Edition.

Thus, only using Client Access ODBC Driver for DB2 with net providersodbc (as bridge) is performant enough and works on Itanium. But how to work around the problem with the special characters?

Best regards,
Stefoon

SSIS Map Error Codes

Oct 3, 2007

I am designing a SSIS package where i get text file as input. This file contains transaction details.

I have to map the members in each transaction for data integrity. For this i am using Lookup object.

Lookup object works very well upto my expectations but i am facing problem in mapping the error code sent bythe this object whenever a record fails. I am storing all the invalid records into text file.

All the records get stored into text file along with some SQL Server error_code and error_column.
I cant interpret these last two columns as it displays some numeric code and column name.

Is there any way to map these error codes and columns and get relevant information out of it?
Example
error code = -1071607778
error column = 0

Any help is appreciated.

Data Conversion Inserting To DB2 On AS400 With SSIS

Apr 30, 2007

I created a SSIS package moving data from a SQL 2005 table to an existing DB2 table on AS400 using Microsoft OLE DB Provider for DB2.

When the package was run, it showed that rows were successfully inserted to DB2. However, the data didn't seem to be converted correctly. Most of the string values were inserted as unusual characters. Also any string values of digits were not inserted.

For example, 1.) a character field (char(1) or nchar(1) as I have tried both types) in SQL 2005 table with a simple value of 'H' was inserted into the DB2 table field of type "A" (alphanumeric) of length 1 as 'ç' and others letters were inserted as other unusual characters. 2.) A string value of '00100' in SQL Server is not inserted to DB2 table at all.

Later we found that the fields inserted with usual characters are difined as CSSID =65535. A few fields with correct data inserted have CSSID=00037.

Does anyone know why this happened and how to solve this to get the data inserted correctly in the DB2 table?

Thanks in advance for any help!

CAST In SELECT Or Data Conversion In SSIS

Oct 18, 2007

Current situation:
Our data source is Oracle and there is a particular column, called number_of_units, with datatype numeric(28, 0) that we will extract into SQL Server data destination.
However, in our SQL Server data destination this column has a datatype numeric(34, 14). This is because we used this column to do some basic calculation (e.g. number_of_units/60) and we need to keep the decimals in tact.

In our current SSIS, we do a select query with CAST from the data source:
SELECT CAST(number_of_units AS NUMERIC(34, 14)) AS number_of_units FROM TABLE_A;

Will casting up from numeric(28,0) to (34,14) cause bigger number of bytes to be transferred across from the data source? I am talking about millions of records over here.

Are there other better ways of doing it?
1) Don't do a CAST in the select query (i.e. SELECT number_of_units FROM TABLE_A).

2) Add a derived/calculated column with numeric(34,14) in SSIS to fill in the calculation.
3) Lastly, load the calculation into SQL Server data destination.

Character Conversion Errors SQL To Excel

Feb 5, 2008

Hopefully this is an easy one.

But in both the importexport utility and from SSIS. "#" become "." (aka pound to period) in column headers. So for example [# of errors] becomes [. of errors]. Now I truly do not ever remember having this issue before but then again I have don't remember having to construct field names with a various assortment of characters that are randomly strewn about as though someone discovered the symbol picker recently and had decided to employ it to make the a spreadsheet a more interesting place. Hence after a good day of time wasted. (as I considered doing an alter table after the sheets were put out.. and then thought better of it.) I seek guidence here. Thanks in advance.

2. Using a Data conversion box in Data flow transformation.

Any difference between these two? Which one should be used?

Invalid Non-ASCII Character Conversion Over JDBC

Jun 19, 2006

Hi,

I'm working on a database conversion from Sybase to SQL Server 2005 and have hit a wall with a character conversion problem when reading non-ASCII characters (encrypted password string) via JDBC.

My application runs on Solaris and accesses a SQL Server 2005 database via the Microsoft JDBC driver. The server was unfortunately specified as having a SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS collation at installation time, and the database being accessed has taken this default. After creation the data was migrated across via DTS.

The invalid character is a dagger '†'. When read over JDBC it is converted to a question mark '?'.

In my original environment a Sybase database was accessed via JDBC driver from Solaris and the correct value was returned. The Sybase database used Latin1_General_BIN as it's collation. By way of experimentation I have modified the default collation sequence within the SQL Server 2005 database, and created a new table to hold the password. I am then able to correctly return strings containing this character from within SQL Server Management Studio, but the same problem still exists when accessing it via JDBC.

I am not sure where to focus my investigation and would be grateful for any useful pointers/advice. To me it looks like it's a JDBC driver issue as with the change in collation it works from a non-JDBC client.

Many thanks

Alistair

Just trying to get the first >= filter working before I fill in the >= working to complete the date range logic.
But I keep getting this conversion error.
Why does SQL think that anything is a character string? All dates are declared as DateTime.I have tried a bunch of combinations like Convert(DateTime, @StartDateRange, 101).Nothing seems to work.
