Cannot Install SQLServer 2005 Express
May 10, 2006
When I try to run the install it detects some previous versions
components. The remove all previous beta components fails and I have
removed everything from the Add/Remove Programs.
Any advice would be helpful

Hi experts;
I have a problem with unicode character 0x2300
I created this table
create table testunicode (Bez nchar(128))
Insert Data
insert into testunicode (Bez)values('寑劉')
with 2 Unicode characters
寑 = 0x2300
劉 = 0x2122
Selecting the data
select Bez from testunicode
I see
"?劉"
劉 = 0x2122 is ok but instead of 0x2300 there is 0x3f
When I modify the insert statement like that ( 8960 = 0x2300 )
insert into testunicode (Bez)values(NCHAR(8960)+'劉')
and select again voila i see
"寑劉"
Does anyone have an idea?
Thanks

I am trying to 'load' a copy of a SQLServer 2000 database to SQLServer 2005 Express (on another host). The copy was provided by someone else - it came to me as a MDF file only, no LDF file.
I have tried to Attach the database and it fails with a failure to load the LDF. Is there any way to bypass this issue without the LDF or do I have to have that?
The provider of the database says I can create a new database and just point to the MDF as the data source but I can't seem to find a way to do that? I am using SQL Server Management Studio Express.
Thanks!!

I have an app that uses a sqlserver 2000 jdbc driver to connect to a sqlserver 2000.
Is it possible to do a direct replacement of sqlserver 2000 with sqlserver 2005 express just by reconfiguring the app to point to the express? The app would still be using the sqlserver 2000 jdbc driver to try and make the connection.
If that is a possibility, what can be some differences in the configuration? Previously with 2000 the config information I entered is:
server name: "machinename"( or ip). I've also tried "machiname/SQLEXPRESS"
DB name: name of db instance
port: 1433(default)
user and pass.
My attempts so far results in
"java.sql.SQLException: [Microsoft][SQLServer 2000 Driver for JDBC]Error establishing socket."
and
"java.sql.SQLException: [Microsoft][SQLServer 2000 Driver for JDBC]Unable to connect. Invalid URL."

Hello,
I am kind of new with .Net development and really new with using SqlExpress. Here is my question, I hope it is easy:
I have a shareware program that I have been selling since 2000 and it was written in VB6 using a third party database program. What I would like to do is rewrite this application using C# and SqlServer Express. The program as it stands right now is about 5mb to download and install.
My concerns:
1) How do I embed and quietly install sqlserver express to the end user's computer without them having any intervention?
2) By using sqlserver express as my database how much extra overhead is going to be included in the install package? I want to keep the install package as small as possible and the user experience of installing the program as painless as possible.
Thanks in advance,

I installed Visual Studio 2005 (released edition) that I downloaded from MSDN, and then went to install the released edition of SQL Server 2005. On the SQL Server 2005 setup "components to install" screen, all but the last choice ("Workstation components, Books Online, and development tools" are grayed out so I cannot install them.The machine on which I was installing these had just been re-imaged and was clean.How do I get around this so I can install SQL Server2005? Hi Folks,
I'm receiving an error when i'm trying to setup a maintenance plan. I'm getting weird errors (and cannot continue) and i'm thinking it's related to a 32 bit error i received during installation on a 64 bit edition.
Background
We have a sql server behind hosted on a dedicated 64 bit box out of SanFran. The hosting company installed the 32 bit version of SqlServer 2005 standard on the box and I requested them to remove it and put the 64 bit edition on. They removed the 32 bit edition and installed the 64 bit edition. So far so good. I installed sp1 and that was fine. I then tried to start a MAINTENCE PLAN and was denied -> the component was not installed. I've asked them to install the component and they did, but they recorded an error during the install. The error screen shot is here: http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/5089/errormessagehs4.png
Now i cannot drop any tasks onto the maintenence plan ... so i'm assuming it's related to the above error. Is there any way i can determine what the 32 bit component is, remove it and re-install the correct component? Is there an error log somewhere where i can check things?
This is stopping me from setting up any backup plans :(
Regards,
Justin.

Currently I am just trying to completely remove all Vista Ultimate's knowledge of installed instances of SQLServer 2005 Developer edition.
I cannot do this for some reason. This all began when I tried to install SQLServer 2005 and it installed but I could not connect to it. Now I have two installed instances that I cannot access, after removing all SQL programs from the Programs and Features icon in the control panel.
I tried running "WIndows Installer CleanUp Utility" as I read in a thread on this forum. This did not help. After going thru and removing all SQLServer programs using the "programs and features" icon in control panel... The installation process shows two installed instances of SQLServer 2005.
1) How can I completely erase all Vista Ultimate's knowledge of any SQLServer 2005 install and start over?
I have downloaded SQLServer 2005 SP 2, and run it, but clearly what I should do, and what Microsoft has asked me to do are not working...
2) What should I be doing to install SQLServer 2005 Developer Edition successfully?
I have been a strong supporter of Microsoft, but this is getting me very frustrated.
Please help,
- Chaz

Downloading and installing VS 2008 Express also created a Miscrosoft SQL Server folder. How do I install the SQL Server 2005 Express?The following is what I found from the HELP menu bar of the VS 2008 Express. Where can I find the sqlexpr.exe?
TIA,Jeffrey
To install SQL Server Express To begin installation, double-click sqlexpr.exe. Note: SQL Server Express is available as a self-extracting executable file (sqlexpr.exe) from both the Visual Studio 2005 CD and the SQL Server Express Web site. SQLEXPR.EXE installs on x86-based computers and to the 32-bit subsystem (WOW64). For more information, see Hardware and Software Requirements (SQL Server Express)

Hi,
I had some issues on my server and had to uninstall .Net Framework 2.0, SQL Server 2005 Express, and SQL Express Toolkit. I installed SQL Server 2005 Express and it seemed to be ok.
Then my problems all started when I tried to install SQL Express Toolkit because I needed to install DTS Wizard again, and it errors out and wouldn't let me install it. So I uninstalled everything that's listed above again.
I then tried to install SQL Server 2005 Express again, and on the second from last screen, while its listing all the components and configuring them, I get the following error as it's configuring the last component... which was the SQL Server Database Services.
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup
-----------------------------------------------------------
The SQL Server service failed to start. For more information, see the SQL Server Books Online topics, "How to: View SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files" and "Starting SQL Server Manually."
I tried to re-install the SQL Server Express another 7 times wth no luck.
If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Bill

I installed VS 2008 Express with an option to download SQL Server 2005 Express. I noticed there is a '90' folder under my Microsoft SQL Server folder. I assumed this the folder for SQL Server 2005 Express.
How do I set up my SQL Server2005 Express, so that I can use some sample databases for my VS 2008 Express? Any difference for SQL Server 2005 Express between VS 2008 Expressdownload and SQL Server 2005 Express download?
TIA,Jeffrey

Hi to all GURUS,
I am very (almost two days) new to SQL Server Express (in fact SQL Server). In my old applications I am using VB.Net 2005 Express with MS Access database and now I wants to go for SQL Server Express.
One thing I am unable to find till now is : if SQLServer Express is installed on my Server machine (say ServerPC) with attached database (say MyDB.mdf), how I can access it through ADO.Net 2.0 from client machine. (using VB.Net Express)
Thanks and hope you will encourge me to use SQL Server .

Ok from what I understand, sqlserver 2005 is FREE, and it is not limited by the number of concurrent connections etc etc.
So this means you can put sqlserver 2005 express on a dedicated server, and it can pretty much handle all the load you can throw right? (except if your say running myspace hehe)
Comments?

I would really like to be using SQLServer Express 2005 for some desktop database applications and replace MSDE. However, I am using VS.NET 2003 and so far I have not been able to discover if that combination will work.
Thanks,

I have followed the link to download SP1 of SQLServer 2005 Express Edition, but, on that page nowhere it is mentioned that downloads offered are of SP1, it simply says that SQLServer 2005 Express edition.
What is the correct link and am I really on the correct page of SP1 ?

The program shortcut "Visual Studio 2005 Command Prompt" seems to be mising from the "Visual Studio 2005 Command Prompt" Start menu added by the current Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Toolkit. Where is it? How to workaround?
I am trying to do Download details SQL Server 2005 Samples and Sample Databases (April 2006) -> GettingStartedWithSQLSamples.htm which says "a. Open a Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 command prompt. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, point to Visual Studio Tools, and then click Visual Studio 2005 Command Prompt." but I can find no such command prompt within "Visual Studio Tools", only "Visual Studio 2005 Remote Debugger{, Configuration Wizard}".
What's wrong? How to fix or workaround? I'd install .NET SDK 2.0 to get it's Command Prompt but that's about 570MB merely for a command prompt!
Thanks for your help, -Mike Parker

I am building a Visual Web Developer site with a SQL Server 2005 Express backend. I am trying to create the login page, I have written a stored procedure that takes in the username and password and returns a value which indicates whether the user is valid or not.
My problem now is integrating this stored procedure into the page. In Visual Studio 2003 you could just drag and drop the stored procedure from the Database Explorer window and it would create the neccessary SQLCommand which you can then pass parameters too and recieve return values, i.e:
sqlcommand1.Paramters[ "@username" ].value = TextUsername.Text;
sqlcommand1.Paramters[ "@password" ].value = TextPassword.Text;
sqlConnection1.Open();
sqlCommand1.ExecuteNonQuery();
Int Result = (int)sqlcommand.Parameters["@returnvalue"].value;
sqlConnection1.Close();
I see in VWD there are SqlDataSource's etc, is this what I need to use to do what I'm looking for and how do they exactly work? Ideally what I'm looking for is when a user clicks login, the contents of the 'username' and 'password' text boxes are queried against the database. What controls and configuration is required to achieve this?
Many thanks in advance,
Mervski

I鈥檓 working with an Sqlserver 2005 Express database on my local machine, and using vs.net 2005.I need to enable the sqlserver cache by the way:
aspnet_regsql -E -d Northwind -ed
I encountered the remote connection problem(error:40).The northwind database was restored to the sqlserver 2005 express by the db file downloaded,and I added the ASPNET user.I also enabled the TCP/IP by using SQL Server Configuration Manager.
But all the web application connected to the Northwind database is working through the connection string:
"Data Source=WKS-DEV-04SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=Northwind;Integrated Security=True"
Any help will be much appreciated, thank you very much for reading my post

Hello,I'm looking for a tutorial or some sample code to save a file in sql server with c#. So far I have not been able to find a anything I could use as most tutorials are in VB. I'm using the varbinary max type to store the file. The part I need help with is selecting the file and converting it using the Stream object, not the SQL insert statements. Thanks,Arnold

Bummer. I can't remember the SA password. I had setup a user account, but I can't change anything or add any new accounts using this login. I can't get in using the windows authentication method no matter how I am logged into this machine.
Any suggestions? I have never been able to use Windows Authentication. There must be something I'm missing here. I have spent hours and hours trying to get into this machine. I just want to replicate a database. This is very frustrating.
Thanks guys.
