Cannot Access Local Sql Server With .SQLExpress

Jun 12, 2008

I have SQL Express installed on my machine.  I can access it with MACHINE_NAMESQLExpress but not .SQLExpress
 Because of this, I cannot add a .mdf to the App_Data folder of one of my projects (I assume) because it says "cannot locate server/instance specified".

SQLExpress 2005 - Local Server

Mar 6, 2008

Good day, my apologies if thes question has been asked before, but I can't find anything with the exact same situation...

Just managed to successfully install SQL Express 2005 (in place of MSDE2000), kept the same database, which upgraded without a problem. I can connect to my local SQL server, but only if I use my full PC name, I get 'SQL server not found out access denied' and 'Specified SQL server not found' whenever I try with . or (local) or localhost.

My main issue is that I have a million and one batch files for all the features I use most to simplify my work, which now will not run as they all specify (local) instead of my PC name. Looking on the MS Support pages, I've tried various different options, none of which seem to make any difference at all.

Here is my current setup:

SQL Express 2005 - version 9.00.2047.00 - (installed with 'Default Instance', not 'Instance: SQLExpress')
Win XP Pro SP3 - version 3264
All of the following are enabled in 'SQL Server Config Manager' - Protocols for MSSQLSERVER:
Shared Memory
Named Pipes
TCP/IP
VIA

I also attempted to install the latest MDAC (version 2.8), and it tells me these components are already part of SP2.

Could anybody tell me if I am missing something, or need to install / update anything further? I am at a dead end with this now.

Thanks in advance,
Andre Greeff

Database On Server But SQLEXPRESS On Local Machine

Jun 14, 2006

This is what I sometimes want:

I have installed on a localmachine sqlexpress. Also my application is installed on the local machine.

But for the night-backup of the database I want to put the database on the company server.

Let's say the database is on: X:datamydatabase.mdf

Why cant't I attach this database with the manager of sqlexpress

Second:

I have installed on local machine sqlexpress AND also the database

Why can't I backup the file to the server like:

BACKUP DATABASE [mydatabase] to DISK=x:datamydatabase.bak WITH FORMAT

It looks I can only backup to the localmachine.

thanks a lot

Can I Connect To SQLExpress Instance Using (local)

Feb 19, 2007

Hello,

I am using the following connection string to connect to SQL Server 2005 Express Edition installed on my local PC.
string sqlstr = "Server=(local);Database=MyDB;User ID=sa;Password=sa;Trusted_Connection=False";

And it gives me the following error. The string works fine in computer with SQL Server 2000 instance but fails with 2005. The string also fails for "Server = localhost".
However the string works very fine if I use the name of Server 2005 i.e ./SQLExpress

===================================

Cannot connect to (local).

===================================

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)

------------------------------
Error Number: 2
Severity: 20
State: 0

------------------------------

Now the main problem is that, of course I could use a named instance, but since I am embedding the Connection String in a dll file so that any user can use it to connect it to the local instance of the SQL Server 2005 installed in his/her computer, I need to use "server = localhost". Doesn't SQL 2005 support this. If yes, where could i find option to enable it?

I have enabled every option available in surface area configuration for SQL Server 2005, but nothing seems to help out. I even use local as well as remote connections using both TCP/IP and named pipes.
Can nyone help me out?

Can't Access (local) Server

Jan 2, 2007

I folks. I have something going on with my local SQL instance. It's SQL 2000 Standard with SP3a on a W2k3 Server with SP1. It's been running fine for several months. I got brave over the weekend and broke something.

I installed the .Net Enterprise Architect and SQL Reporting Services. My SQL instance is still running, but I can't get to it through EM and SQLServerAgent won't start. When I try to start SQLServerAgent manually, it gets about halfway through the process, then shuts itself down again. I also have an MSDE instance that is not complaining at all.

I can get to the server from my applications. I can also register it in EM with the IP and get to it that way.

Here's what's in sqlagent.out:

2007-01-02 16:34:41 - ! [298] SQLServer Error: 6, Specified SQL server not found. [SQLSTATE 08001]
2007-01-02 16:34:41 - ! [298] SQLServer Error: 11004, ConnectionOpen (Connect()). [SQLSTATE 01000]
2007-01-02 16:34:41 - ! [000] Unable to connect to server '(local)'; SQLServerAgent cannot start
2007-01-02 16:34:42 - ? [098] SQLServerAgent terminated (normally)

I did confirm in the registry that the port is set to 1433. It's not blank or incorrect. I am also working with a local account that is in the administrators group. There is no AD structure at work.

Many thanks for any ideas. This one feels like a little needle in a big haystack.

Translation Of StrConnectie = Provider=SQLOLEDB; && _ Data Source=(local)SQLEXPRESS; &&

Jul 3, 2007

Hello,I'm struggling a giant fight with my webprovider (ASP.net 2.0) in the following case:I'm using the default connectionstring which automatic is provided when I create an ASP.net webstarterskit. This connectionstring is working fine when i deployed that kit to a W2003 server testenvironment and is also running on my laptop. But when I tried to deploy the website to my (new) hostingserver, also a W2003 server, I landed in ERROR-land. The last error I received was:Cannot open database "Club" requested by the login. The login failed.>
Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE'.NB: I gave that user the right privileges and roles.  My provider is not willing in sending me an example of a good working connectionstring and is directing me to their FAQ-site in which the right connectionstring is mentioned. That string looks like this (for a MS SQL database):strConnectie = "Provider=SQLOLEDB;" & _ "Data Source=(local)SQLEXPRESS;"
& _ "Initial Catalog=[GEBRUIKERSNAAM];" & _ "User Id=[GEBRUIKERSNAAM];" & _ "Password=[WACHTWOORD]"My connectionstring in web.config looks like this:<connectionStrings><clear/><add name="ClubSiteDB"
connectionString="Data
Source=.SQLExpress;Integrated Security=true;AttachDBFileName=|DataDirectory|Club.mdf;User
Instance=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/><remove
name="LocalSqlServer"/><add name="LocalSqlServer"
connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=True;User
Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|aspnetdb.mdf"
/></connectionStrings>Is there anybody in this forum that can help me out and explain to me how to use the string, as provided by the host, in the default connectionstring i use in web.config ??Any help is welcome and appreciated.NB: I'm using VWD 2005 Express Edition and SQL Server Management Studio ExpressHarry  Elzinga

Only Local Access To SQL Server 2005 Express Ed. ?

Aug 2, 2007

Hello!
I run an application with a SQL Server 2005 Express edition.

I read under

Start menu
--> all programs
--> Microsoft SQL Server Express
--> Configuration Tools
--> SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration
--> Surface Area Configuration for Services and Connections
--> Database Engine
--> Remote Connections

That:
"By default, SQL SERver 2005 Express, Evaluation and Developer editions allow local client connetctions only. Enterprise, Standard and Workgroup editions also listens for remote client connections over TCP/IP. Use the options below to change the protocols on which SQL Server listens for incoming client connections. TCP/UP is preferred over named pipes because it requeres fewer ports to be opened across the firewall."

Here I chose the option "Local and remote connections only, using TCP/IP only".

But still, does this mean that other users can't connect to my database since I'm running the Express edition?

If that's the case, could this be changed by using mySQL instead?

Is it hard to transfer a MS SQL Server .mdf database file into a new mySQL database?

SQL 2012 :: Connecting To Local Server Instance From Access

Aug 4, 2014

First time I've tried doing this - I have SQL Server 2012 installed on my local machine with an instance running (which was set up under an administrator account, not mine, which has no admin rights), and I'm trying to create a linked table from Access (also on the local machine) to a table on the server.

I tried creating a DSN using Windows Authentication, using the server name which is the same as my computer name, and got the error "Error 18452, Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication".

I then created a SQL authentication user ID and password, and tried the same thing using that instead, and got "Login failed for user <myusername>"

Is there some particular setting on the local instance I need to change to allow this kind of connection, or do I need to use something other than the server name to connect, such as an IP address? Remember that I have no admin access on this machine so any solution would have to avoid requiring that.

Downsizing From SQLExpress To Access

Jan 9, 2008

I have a simple (3 tables) SQL Express database that I would like to downsize to Access, as I am considering removing SQL Express from my machine. I have no need of the extra capabilities of SQL Express; Access will do fine. Presumably I could just reconstruct the tables in Access manually and then populate them from SQL Express (eg. with a C# program), but I wonder if there is an easier (automatic) way?

Seems everyone is going the other way!

Thanks for any suggestions.

Network Access SQLExpress

Jan 16, 2006

I am  trying to access a SQLExpress database on another computer on my LAN.  Using Windows Authentication. I don't really want to go to Mixed Mode authentication as I understand it involves a registry tweak and creating a new user. I am a novice at this.

Getting the following error on running the connection code below:

SQLException was unhandled "Login failed for user 'D37YKC1SGuest'."

No doubt it is a security problem but I am not sure how to get around it.  Any help appreciated.

Connection code:

Dim conn As New SqlClient.SqlConnection

conn.ConnectionString = "Server=D37YKC1SSQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=True;Database=VBNMDATA"

conn.Open()

Tried the following which is my Windows logon on the other computer (blank password) but same error:

conn.ConnectionString = "Server=D37YKC1SSQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=True;Database=VBNMDATA; User Id=Geoff; Password="

I have TCP/IP enabled in SQL Express  and the firewall is off.  I can see the server on the other computer with this code:

Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click

' Retrieve the enumerator instance and then the data.

Dim instance As SqlDataSourceEnumerator = _

SqlDataSourceEnumerator.Instance

Dim table As System.Data.DataTable = instance.GetDataSources()

' Display the contents of the table.

DisplayData(table)

End Sub

Private Sub DisplayData(ByVal table As DataTable)

For Each row As DataRow In table.Rows

For Each col As DataColumn In table.Columns

MessageBox.Show(col.ColumnName.ToString & " " & row(col).ToString)

Next

Next

End Sub

SQLExpress - Remote Access Trouble When Publishing A Site

Sep 12, 2007

Hi all,
I followed this excellent tutorial (from Microsoft) about creating and using a SQLExpress db table internal to your website:
http://www.asp.net/learn/videos/video-08.aspx
and the site I created works just fine - locally. When I publish to my web host provider I get this error:
[SqlException (0x80131904): An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)]
My web host provider supports .NET 2.0 but doesn't support MS SQL Server. But that should matter - right? Because I'm putting the db instance right in the website?
I did a search and followed some of the advice:
I went into the SQL Server Surface Area Config Mgr and set SQLExpress for local and remote connections and rebooted/republished. I also have SQL Server 2005 installed as a separate entity (if that makes a difference).
I still get the above error. This is the connection string from the web.config:
<connectionStrings><add name="ConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|Customers.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>
</connectionStrings>And this is the call from the markup:
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:ConnectionString %>"
SelectCommand="SELECT * FROM [Customer]"></asp:SqlDataSource>
Does any know the fix for this?
Thanking you in advance
Pat

How To Link To An Existing SQLExpress 2005 Table From Access 2003

Nov 22, 2006

I initially created an Access application within Access 2003 which I subsequently migrated to SQLExpress 2005 (Tables only) using Microsoft SQL Migration Assistance for Access 2003 (SSMAA) and continue to use Access 2003 as a front end, this really was easy and worked perfect. Now I added a new table to my SQLExpress DB and need to link to it from my Access application but can not find a way to do so in the same way that the SSMAA does. I need to run the Access 2003 application in share mode from multiple PC in the LAN. If I try linking to the table using an ODBC connection I can only access from the PC where the link was done! Any ideas? THanks in advance.

Local SQL Server Instances Not Showing Up On Local Servers Tab Of Management Studio Logon Screen

Oct 2, 2007

We have a 64-bit VM server running SQL Server 2005. The SQL Server on this particular VM server has 6 local instances installed. On the Management Studio logon screen I can type the full name of the local instance and connect to it, however if I press the drop down in the Server name field, choose Browse and select the Local Servers tab there is nothing listed under Database Engines.

Any idea why the 6 local instances don't show up under Database Engines? This is preventing me from installing a vendor application because their installer looks for local SQL Server instances on this server, but if SQL Server won't even show the local instances then the installer doesn't see them either.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Craig

Local Database Access Issues

Hello,

How do I set up a SQL Server login to access the database?
