Just curious if there's a reason why everytime I try to apply the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 2 from Windows Update that it will sit at "Installing" and appear to do nothing (no hard drive activity, but the MSI and setup processes are chewing a little bit of CPU time). How long should I give this update to complete? I am running a 2-CPU dual-core Xeon 3.0GHz w/ 2GB of RAM setup, so I would have thought it would be completed very quickly. :(
Edit:
Disregard; I had to wait for a full 15 minutes! :O

I am having the same problem as Michael, with the exception that my laptop is running windows XP SP2.
BUT when I look at the SETUP LOG FILE there is NOTHING in it. This is what I get:
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 9.00.2047.00
==============================
OS Version : Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
Time : Tue Apr 03 19:36:54 2007
(LAPTOP NAME HERE) : Unknown article Result.
SQL Server Setup failed. For more information, review the Setup log file in %ProgramFiles%Microsoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOGSummary.txt.
Time : Tue Apr 03 19:36:56 2007
(As you can see, there is nothing in the file)
Any ideas what could be wrong?
Thanks
Pedro

Downloading and installing VS 2008 Express also created a Miscrosoft SQL Server folder. How do I install the SQL Server 2005 Express? The following is what I found from the HELP menu bar of the VS 2008 Express. Where can I find the sqlexpr.exe?
TIA,Jeffrey
To install SQL Server Express To begin installation, double-click sqlexpr.exe. Note: SQL Server Express is available as a self-extracting executable file (sqlexpr.exe) from both the Visual Studio 2005 CD and the SQL Server Express Web site. SQLEXPR.EXE installs on x86-based computers and to the 32-bit subsystem (WOW64). For more information, see Hardware and Software Requirements (SQL Server Express)

Hi,
I had some issues on my server and had to uninstall .Net Framework 2.0, SQL Server 2005 Express, and SQL Express Toolkit. I installed SQL Server 2005 Express and it seemed to be ok.
Then my problems all started when I tried to install SQL Express Toolkit because I needed to install DTS Wizard again, and it errors out and wouldn't let me install it. So I uninstalled everything that's listed above again.
I then tried to install SQL Server 2005 Express again, and on the second from last screen, while its listing all the components and configuring them, I get the following error as it's configuring the last component... which was the SQL Server Database Services.
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup
-----------------------------------------------------------
The SQL Server service failed to start. For more information, see the SQL Server Books Online topics, "How to: View SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files" and "Starting SQL Server Manually."
I tried to re-install the SQL Server Express another 7 times wth no luck.
If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Bill

I installed VS 2008 Express with an option to download SQL Server 2005 Express. I noticed there is a '90' folder under my Microsoft SQL Server folder. I assumed this the folder for SQL Server 2005 Express.
How do I set up my SQL Server2005 Express, so that I can use some sample databases for my VS 2008 Express? Any difference for SQL Server 2005 Express between VS 2008 Expressdownload and SQL Server 2005 Express download?
TIA,Jeffrey

Hi all,
I downloaded the SSEUtilSetup.EXE and extracted the SSEUtil.exe to a folder of C:drive of my PC that is Windows XP Pro. I plan to learn the CLR programming via user-instance of SQL Server Express. I need to have SQL Server Express Utility installed. Please help and tell me how I can install SSEUtil.exe in my PC and how I use it to interact with SQL Server Express.
Thanks,

I'm using the login/roles from Visual Studio 2005 in a website.
Is MS SQL Express mandatory? I already have MS SQL 2000 on the box. Is there any way to use that instead?
And if so, will I need to install MS SQL on the box I'm building the webiste on?
Thanks,

Hi all,
I am trying to setup a small database on an XP system. Installed SQL Express, installed Management studio Express - no errors
I create a user called Joe using SQL server authentication
I create a database and make Joe the owner
I then try to connect to the database using the Joe account and get an error saying that
Cannot connect to JOE-PCSQLEXPRESS
Additional Information:
Login failed for user joe. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server Connection
I then try to do a reverse telnet on 1433 and get an error so I am guessing that there is no listener on that Port.
I remember seeing something needing starting when running express?
What am I not seeing?

Today, I attempted to install sp2 to my SQL 2005 Express instance and the install dialog would not allow me to check the box next to database services. At the bottom of the dialog it says this edition of SQL Server does not qualify for the update. It allowed other parts of the product to be updated, just not the engine.
This is on a Windows XP, SP2 box.
Shouldn't I be allowed to install the update for the database engine?
Thanks,
Del

I'm using the disk that came with my Visual Web Developer for Dummies book. It installed on my XP Home machine, but when installing on my XP Pro machine, the fourth step, SQL Server Express, it fails. I cleaned up my hard drive (about ten gigs of free space), I followed the steps here http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/support/readme/default.aspx to uninstall everything dot net related. Rebooted, checked my control panel, etc. Tried to install. It just fails. No error message. Can anyone give me an idea of where to start? Thanks

I can't get the download to work...i've tried regular sql server express 2005, the express for sp2 and the express with advanced services. I keep getting this message after the native client and support files are installed.."This application has failed to start because XOLEHLP.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."Then right after that message is says... "Failed to load SQLSpars.dll"

i tried hard to install sql server 2005 express today but it always failed.
system: XP german / SP 3
failure: it just says that the databaseservices could not be installed and the details are in the log. if i check the log it does not contain anything about the database services. it only says that the native client could not be installed (which is okay because i seem to have a newer one) .. here is the log:

I have been trying to setup SharePoint Services 3.0 on 2003 Server (Advanced) and when I run the setup for it I get this error:
SharePonit Products and Technologies Configuration Wizzard
"Failed to start the database service MSSQL$Microsoft##SSEE. Repair this product by selecting it from the Add/Remove Programs menu."
I have run a repair on all of the SQL products in the Add/Remove Programs menu and I continue to get the same error as above.
Please advise as I have un-installed and re-installed SQL Express 2005 and SharePoint Services 3.0 prior to this posting.

Hi, I installed VB express, can't recall if SQL Server Express was installed with VB or not at the same time, but I do have SQL Express installed. All I see is Microsoft SQL Server 2005 --> Configuration tools and --> Documentation and Tutorials. I must be missing something so I can create, view, alter and delete tables. The install gave no signs of installation problems. Any ideas what went wrong?

I have been having terrible problems trying to install SQL Server Express on my laptop. This is so I can demo some products without an internet connection. If I try to install SQL Express using one of the Visual Studio products I get a message saying everything installed but the server portion is not there or running. If I try and install using just the SQL Express download then I get the following error:
SQL Server Setup has determined that the following account properties are not specified: 'AGTACCOUNT' . The properties specify the startup account for the services that are installed. To proceed, refer to the template.ini and set the properties to valid account names. If you are specifying a windows user account, you must also specify the password for the account.
I have tried to search for this error and all I have been able to find are references to the command line install. So I tried installing it from the command line using switch and ini configurations. I still get the same errors.
I also don't know if this is related or not but occasionally I also get a warning that my hardware is not sufficent to run the software. I look at the hardware requirements and my laptop meets or exceeds all of them (Pentium M, 1.86 Ghz, 512 M RAM, 40 Gb disk, XP SP2). The laptop is an IBM T43. All attempts were made on a clean install with nothing else loaded on the computer.
Any help would be appreciated. I am just about to give up on the whole project.

I have successfully automatically installed SQL Server Express on several XP machines with the following lines in an installation script that references an MyTemplate.ini file. However, installation failed on a Windows 2000 machine and on another XP machine. Is something wrong with MyTemplate.ini or anything else? Your help is much appreciated.
Two Lines in an installation file that extract from SQLEXPR.exe and then execute setup.exe using MyTemplate.ini

I have installed the same SP2 on another machine (Both XP SP2) without further problems. The only difference between the two machines is the one with errors has another instance of SQL 2005 (Not express) as the default instance and the Express named instance I am upgraded. The second machine only has Express named instance.
Any help appreciated.

Hi,
Upon trying to install SQL Express, the setup highlighted a warning that the IIS component should first be installed. I canceled the setup and went to the add/remove windows component wizard to install the IIS, I checked the box then pressed next and the wizard began the install.
I keep getting an error stating that files can't be copied from C:WINDOWSI386 and it asks for the XP installation disc, which wasn't supplied with the HP Pc as there is the D: drive that installed windows. I do have recovery discs that I made up when I purchased the Pc, but the setup does not recognise these as being XP discs.
The files needed for the Installation of the IIS component are in the Windows sub-directory and on the recovery discs, but the setup will not copy them.
Can someone please advise me on how to rectify this issue? I contacted HP, who after an hour on the phone told me that they only support XP Home edition, not XP pro and I should get in contact with Microsoft.
I thought I would post here before spending more time on the phone to Microsoft.
Regards.
Any information about this issue would be appreciated, as I can't find anything in the other forum topics that seem relevant.
EDIT: I see that a prerequisite for installing IIS is Windows TCP/IP Protocol and Connectivity Utilities. How do I obtain this? or How do I check if this is installed already?

My system had a beta version of Visual Studio 2005 Express on it which I uninstalled. Apparently not correctly, as I can not install SQL Server 2005 Express. I have tried to removal procedures which either give me an error message or I cannot find the items in the Add/Remove program list that are requested. That is, it looks like the system should accept SQL Server 2005 Express, but it does not.
I have successfully installed Visual C++ 2005 Express. I have no clue as to what to do next and there is no documentation on what to do. I have looked at the various postings here, tried several of them, to no avail.
When I search the registry there are some 70 entries that have the string €œSQLEXPRESS€? in the entry. I am unsure if these are related to my previous beta install or related to the system (a475c HP Pavilion) needs. I am reluctant to start removing those entries.
So now what do I do? Is this really that difficult? And what if I decided to buy Visual Studio 2006, whenever it may be introduced? Will I not be able to install it?
Here is the log file that was generated yesterday, my latest attempt.

Please help!
I want to install SQL Server 2005 Express Adv. I saw that you had to un-install the beta version prior. So I did. When I go to install SQL Server 2005 Express Adv, I get a message saying that SQL Server detected the previous Beta version, goto add/remove programs blah...blah...blah. Nothing was listed in a/r programs. I ran an uninstall microsoft had on their web site, and I got a message saying nothing was deteceted. I deleted all folders related.
Somehow when I initially ran the unistall, not all components were removed. I am baffled. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there:
I have a tiny problem with installing SQL Express -- more exactly to get my application to run after installing it :-)
In my application I have a selection box for SQL Server instances installed -- this to allow the users to create their database(s) on whichever instance they want. To populate the selection box I tried various methods, the one that stuck was using SMO:
SmoApplication.SqlServerRegistration.EnumRegisteredServers();
I tried the following before deciding on it, but they all had problems returning instance names: SqlDataSourecEnumerator.Instance.getDataSources();
SmoApplication.EnumAvailableServers();
DbProviderFactories.GetFactory("System.Data.SqlClient");
Anyway, long story short, after install (which includes the SMO/DMO package from the Microsoft SQL Express feature pack download page) this fails with an exception (a null variable on the above method). The ONLY way I got it to work was to install the SQL Server Management Studio Express.
Any idea what I have to de in order for me to NOT have to ship the MSE? It could be that my server instances are not registered, but...
Thank you in advance,
