i installed sql server 2005 but cant connect to database engine. i write (computer name)sqlexpress but it failed. error is:

I've just installed a brand new instance of SQL on a new server. It's for our Helpdesk/Inventory software. All I needed to install was the DB Components and the Tools (primarily for Management Studio). I did not install SQL as a default instance, but called it TRACKIT8 (software using this instance). I have subsequently installs SP2 before trying to connect to the DB.
I am unable to conect to the DB Engine via Management Studio. In the Server name: field, there is a blank space, so I try to browse for a server, but I get nothing. I try to manually type the name of the server (NIASSQL2, localhost etc) into the field, but I cannot connect to the engine at all. I can see the services for the Server and Server Agent have started in the SQL Server Configuration Manager and I am able to change certain field in the properties of the Server and Agent (change the path of the error logs).
Is there something I am supposed to configure before I try to connect via the Management Studio? I am looking to change the paths of the Data Files, as I don't want them on my C: partition. Plus I have other instances I want to create and install. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I can connect to Analysis Service and Integration Service but I can not connect to the Database Engine. I receive the following error message:
Cannot connect to homebase.
Additional Information:

I have recently installed SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition. I did not install all the features, just the Database engine and Analysis Services. I also updated everything with SQL Server SP2.
So far, so good. But when I tried to connect to the Database Engine, I get a little window with the following message:
"Cannot connect to Valentin-PC (server name)."
"Login failed for user - User Name - ( Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18456 )".
I have tried just about everything, but to no avail. What is strange is the fact that I can connect to the other server type that I have installed (Analysis Services). No connection problems there.
I just installed SQL server Enterprise 2005 and connected database engine in SQL server management studio, but it is blank space when choose 'browse for more' at server name field. What's reason to cause this problem?
Questions for this problem:
1. Do I need to open the TCP port 1433 in firewall by hand for connect database engine?
2. I can€™t find the sqlbrowser.exe in SQL server/90/ folder, can I copy this file into it.
3. The SQL server mobile is work; I can connect the new created database. What€™s different to use SQL server mobile and database engine?
4. I got five discs from Microsoft; I have installed DVD server application and pack 2. Do I need to install the library?
When trying to open the sharepoint webpage I'm getting this error - cannot connect to the configuration database sharepoint 2010.Database is on SQL server 2008.Tried opening the site on server - got the same error.Googled and tried to start the mssqlserver services (browser and sql server) but they fail to start with error code 17058.
Googled what this error was about and some solutions led me to check the error log in event viewer. For mssqlserver I got following message in the event proverties window -Â Could not open error log file <path of log file> ''. Operating system error = 5 (access denied). When I tried to login on the sql server management studio, it does not let me login and gives error -Â
I got to know that this can happen due to unexpected reboot of server. I checked my server and it had actually restarted unexpectedly.URL...
I am trying to run MS SQL Server Management Studio Express. According to what I read, I can connect by selecting Database engine, then on server name, I put my computer name sqlexpress. I am using Windows Authentication. Every time, I get:

What am I doing wrong? Thanks for helping me to stop pulling my hair out.

I am working (or trying to work) in Management Studio. I have one database that I use on my one and only machine. ( I am not using any of the default databases.) I have several queries saved as files, which I open as needed. Every time I open a file I get that VERY ANOYING Connect to Database Engine dialog box. OK, it's no big thing. I don't use Server Authentication so all I have to do is hit enter and I get connected. But why should I even have to hit enter once after I'm already connected?
I recently installed SQL Server and Visual Studio. When I went into SQL Server, I could only connect to a SQL EXPRESS Database engine. I need to access the full Database. I tried disconnecting it, uninstalling/reinstalling. Now I cant connect to the SQL EXPRESS DB Object. There are no SQL Server services running.
I finally got SQL Server 2005 installed on my Vista Ultimate computer and now I can't connect in SQL Server Management Studio.
I've got a named instance; use the built-in system account; windows authentication mode. I try to connect to
Server type: Database Engine Server name: RAYWOERNER-PCRAYWOERNER Authentication: Windows Authentication
and it fails. Please help.
Thanks,
Ray

Hello, I have installed SQL Server 2005 in my PC and during the installation I have created a predefined instance (I have used Windows autentication). I could use correctly SQL Server till some days ago, when I changed the password of my PC login profile. Now, when I open SQL Server, if I click on the "Connect" button, the following error message appears (I translate it from italian version)
Unable to connect to "CARLO" Further information: An error has occurred while you were trying to establish a connection to the server. When you connect to SQL Server 2005, this error can be generated because SQL Server doesn't allow remote connections under the predefined settings. (provider: Provider Named Pipes, error: 40 - Unable to open a connection to SQL Server) (Micorsoft SQL Server, error:2)
I'm sure that the error raises because I have changed my PC access password (the program worked correctly before), but in the "Connect to Server" window the user name and the password text boxes are disabled, so I can't insert the new password... Can you suggest what have I to do?
I've two instances(Default, Named[dynamicsFINANCE]) running on SQL server 2014. However, when I try to connect to named instance say (dynamics FINANCE) using SQL authentication from local SSMS, I get below error message.A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1)I assigned a static port number to the named instance [dynamicsFINANCE]Â 1450. I also setup the firewall rule to allow access to Port 1450.
We have 3x instances of SQL Server 2012 installed on a single remote server - there's the default MSSQLSERVER instance, then INSTANCE01 and INSTANCE02. I can remotely connect to the default MSSQLSERVER instance through SSMS, but I cannot connect to either of the additional named instances (INSTANCE01 or INSTANCE02).Â
For example, if I try to connect to "sql.domain.com", I can successfully access the default instance on the remote server. If I try to connect to "sql.domain.comINSTANCE01", I get an error stating
"A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server".
However - if I try to connect to "sql.domain.comINSTANCE01, 49301" (where 49301 is the TCP Port for the TCP/IP Protocol for this SQL Server instance), I am able to successfully connect.
This leads me to think that there's a communication issue with the SQL Server Browser service running on the remote SQL Server and my workstation.Â
The following items have been verified:
SQL Server Browser is running on the remote SQL ServerWindows Firewall has been disabled on the SQL ServerTCP Ports 1433, 1434, 1954, and 49301 have been opened up on the remote destination's firewallUDP Port 1434 has been opened up on the remote destination's firewall.
I'm using Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition and I installed it under "Local System" on Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate.
I understand that there are issues of course that occur with this, however I can't seem to understand why what I'm doing isn't working. I'm not using this on any server, just to test out ASP.NET 2.0 applications - nothing more.
I'm getting this error:
TITLE: Connect to Server ------------------------------
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 2)

I've installed this via a mixed authentication (as suggested by www.wrox.com).
I tried enabling the TCP/IP and named pipe connections, just as previous people have done, but it hasn't worked. Nor has enabling the SQL Browser.
i have a sql server job scheduled to run daily twice.the job is running fine , but once  or twice a week the job fails saying."Message Unable to connect to SQL Server '(local)'.  The step failed." all other times the job runs successfully. it randomly the job is failing. once its failed and if i try to run it manually it runs fine or it will start running fine from next schedule onwards. This job mainly executes a stored procedure.the owner of the job is setup as sa. i don't understand why its fail randomly and all other times(90% of cases) it successful."Unable to connect to SQL Server '(local)'.  The step failed."
Is there any description on what the Remember Password check box on this dialog box does? As far as I can tell, it doesn't do anything. Every time I open an item from a project, or create a new Query, I get asked for the password, no matter how many times I have given it for the Server before.
It looks so useful, but is frustrating not knowing how to use it.
I work in an environment where everyone is there own server. I can connect to a collegeau's SQL Server by using the Windows Authentication method in the Database Engine but if I try to connect to the Reporting Services Engine it says that I am not allowed to connect due to permission violations. How do I get adequate permissions to do so? I have all of the components for Reporting Services installed and I am actively using it. I want to be able to test the functionality of the RSScriptor before deploying it out to others.
When opening .sql files, I get a connect to database engine prompt every single time. how to stop this from prompting vs. just using my current active connection?
In Management Studio i highlight my query and then click on 'Analyse query in Database Engine Advisor' but i get the following error message: "Failed to connect to an IPC Port: The system cannot find the file specified". Seems like if I reboot my computer it works one time then get the same error on the second time.I'm running developer edition with service pack 2.
I just upgraded from Windows XP Pro to Windows Vista Bussiness and tried to reinstall SQL Server 2005 Developers Edition. After the installation i downloaded (using microsoft windows update) and installed all the service packs for sql and vista available.
My problem is when i open sql server management studio and try to connect to my default instance using windows authentication and database engine, an 18456 error occurs.
I enabled all the protocols and all the ports I disabled windows firewall and antivirus (eset nod32) I installed all service packs available I have also installed Visual Studio 2005 without installing sqlexpress
But nothing happens!
Please i am very desperate, any information will be gratefully accepted.
This is my installation Information

I designed the AlwaysOn wrong, but every time we fail over from primary server to another server, my applications cannot connect because the sql logins cannot connect to their default databases. Once I run the command to link the login with the user in the default database then the users are able to connect. Did I do something wrong when designing AlwaysOn?
I try to import my SSIS packages which are created using the Business Intelligent studio into SQL server 2005 but I cannot do that.
I am running SQL server 2005 enterprise edition.
Also when i tried to connect to Integration services using Object explorer, it only prompt me for server name. I cannot change the username and password which is disabled.
Then how am i supposed to connect to Integration services on a server in this case?
I'm having a problem connecting with a Java application but I CAN connect using my .Net application - the user name and password are the same for both (using the same database on SQL Server Express 2005).
The error I get is: "com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: Cannot open database "CORNERS" requested by the login. The login failed." An interesing note - I get the same message if the database is not running.
SQL Server Express 2005 is installed in mixed mode.
Here is my connection string in the .Net appplication: <add key="connectString" value="Server=(local);UID=sa;PWD=myPasswd;Database=CORNERS" />.
We are trying to install Ponemah (DSI) Application and it stops every time with no errors but in the same place. It installed perfectly on other computers. This one is XP also - can't find differences except that when we look we can see that the application does not create the sql engine. Do we need to reinstall office or what is it that will repair ODBC?? The tech support for the product has not been able to find solution.
Hi, I am building a website using visual web developer and sql server 2005, i want to implement a search box/engine which will return search results to the user, the results would be details of a movie they are looking for, i appreciate all advice and help given, thanks.
Hi,I was so lost in Google Desktop Search last night, I kept on dreamingabout the endless possiblisties of Google Search Technology. While I was in school I had read enough about DB informationretrivial. Why can't google use their search technology to buildDatabase engine ? Isn't that a possiblity ?Am I still dreaming or am I awake ?Cheers,da_LazyBoy
