Cannot Connect To SQL Server Database Using Ado.net After IP Address Has Changed

May 4, 2004

Dear all,

I wasn't able to connect to my SQL server 2000 database (which reside in the network in a windows 2003 server) after the IP address of the server has changed and the server is shut down, moved and re-started.

I was able to connect to this server by using ADO using VB. I was able to register this server in my EM and was able to create ODBC connection. Just when using ADO.NET, I wasn't able to connect. Any ideas? Will there be any caching within ADO.NET still pointing to the old IP address?

Thank you for all the help in advance.

The IP Address Of Our SQL Server Is To Be Changed

Apr 22, 2003

Hello,

Soon, we are going to redesign our servers and their positioning insofar as web access is concerned. The SQL Server will go to a DMZ.

Its IP Address (as well as hostname) is to be changed. Can you offer suggestions about what to be aware of on these two items?

I've been involved in a hostname change befoew (and, it's a pain), but never an IP Address.
Thanks, MichaelG

I Changed My Windows Password And Now I Cannot Connect To SQL Server On My Development Machine

Jun 11, 2007

I changed the login password on my computer today, and now I cannot connect to the SQL Server instance I have on that same machine. I am using Windows Authentication. I would think that, if I can log on to my computer, I would be able to connect to the database, since I have been "authenticated" by windows but, that does not appear to be the case. Can anyone offer any advice? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Unable To Use SSMSE To Connect To SQL Express Server On Secondary IP Address

Apr 28, 2006

I am having trouble to use SSMSE to remotely connect SQL Express server using IPs other than the base IP of the machine.

Machine settings:

(1) Has multiple IP configured. Those IP are accessible remotely

(2) Firewall is not on.

SQL Express server configuration:

(1) TCP/IP and named pipe are on

Browser service state:

(1) running

(2) listening at 0.0.0.0:1434 (UDP)

SSMSE connection results:

(1) with <baseIP><instance>, connects OK

(2) with <otherIP><instance>, connection failed.

Both connections use exactly the same authentication information.

Testing results using telnet:

(1) telnet <baseIP> 1434, OK

(2) telnet <otherIP> 1434, OK

Does SSMSE actually only listen on the base IP even it shows to listen on all the IPs?

Can Connect To 'ServerName' But Not To Its IP Address

Aug 4, 2006

I'm using SQL Manager from my Enterprise server to connect to my SQL Express server that will act as a witness to a db mirroring system. If I try to connect to the SQL Express server using its IP address, I get a "named pipes error 53." If I connect by browsing the network and connect to the Name of the Server "MachinenameSQLExpress", I am successful. I would like to be able to connect to the IP directly as it's not dependant upon certain services to be started or configured a certain way.

Thank you,

Cannot Connect After Changed To "Windows NT Only" Security

Jun 12, 2001

WE have an appl testing the SQL security feature, at some point in time
they drop the BUILTINAdministrators group from the login,
changed the security mode to "Windows NT only", but no users have system admin
server role, after the SQL server was restarted, no one can connect to the server. No one has authority to change the security mode back to "mixed"
(all standard logons will not work)
Any comment ?

The way I can think of to fix the problem:
detach all user databases
run rebuildm.exe
reattach all user databases
recreate the required logins

Any other suggestions/solutions, Thanks

Recovery :: Connect To Cluster By IP Address

Sep 9, 2015

I have inherited two separate SQL clusters. One cluster instance is called DESQLSC1INST1 and the other is MKSQLSC1INST1.

On MKSQLSC1INST1 I can connect by using MKSQLSC1INST1, MKSQLSC1 and the IP address that the cluster is running on.
On DESQLSC1INST1 I can only connect using DESQLSC1INST1.

I have checked configuration manager but it does not show me how this is set up.

Is there another way to configure this?

BDE Admin Connecting Problem, How Do I Connect Via IP Address.

Jun 12, 2006

Hi, I am connecting from clientside with sql server 2005 installed trying to connect to a database running on a server with sql server 2000 installed. this is not a 2000 to 2005 compatibility issue.
I can connect locally fine to the server and log in using the sa account, however for BDE admin i HAVE to use the server name instead of ip address. If i try to use the ip address of the server, the connection dosnt get established. *this is all happening localy on our own network.

How to I use ip address to connect instead of the server name? I will need to connect remotely outside of our network later on, and i dont think I can use the servername. Does anyone have a solution? thanks.

SQL Server 2008 :: Changed Database From Full To Simple - Maintenance Plan Failing

Mar 6, 2015

One of my programmers changed their database from full to Simple recovery. Saw that my job that backs up the Full Recovery mode databases failed, so I moved that database to my Simple database backup job plan and removed it from the Full Recovery job. I am unable to remove the db from the Transaction Log task on the Full Plan because when I try to edit that job "Databases with Simple Recovery will be excluded"

My transaction log backups are still failing with the following error: "The statement BACKUP LOG is not allowed while the recovery model is SIMPLE. Use BACKUP DATABASE or change the recovery model using ALTER DATABASE. BACKUP LOG is terminating abnormally.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.Just want to remove that database so my Full Recovery backup job does not try to back it up.

Is there a simple way to tell when a database was last accessed or changed?

We have some databases on old servers which we would like to discontinue but do not know if they are being used.

We would rather not just take them offline.

Is there anyway I can find out if they are still being used?

Please help if you can.

External And Internal Address Of A SQL Database. Please HELP!

Apr 11, 2007

Ok,

I am a webdesigner who at the moment does not know SQL (although, I plan on remedying that) so I am developing a page with a DB designer - he is doing the DB work, I am doing the look/feel, but he asked me the following questions, of which I cannot seem to find an answer and the guys who tend our server are useless - so I am hoping someone here can help me. In general what he needs to know is:

"what is the external address (either in domain format or IP) and the equivalent internal address so that we can access the msSQL running on your server. The internal address is needed for the webpages to talk to it, while the external address is needed for development of the pages in visual studio and the database tools." Also, he later sent me an email asking that when I get this info (from someone) that it would be usefull to get a sample string/query to get access to the DB. I am running SQL 2000 and have enterprise manager. Where can I find this information? or how do I figure this out????

Thank you for all the help -- Please let me know if you need any more info.

I could exclude it from thebackup, but then I would not back it up if it where to change. SQL 2012 :: Database Mail Profile Security Changed On Its Own?

Oct 30, 2015

We had a strange incident with our Database Mail today. We use sp_send_DBMail to send mail from stored procedures in our SQL Server 2012 (11.0.2138). There are 7 profiles available for use by different databases. The actual stored procedures are called by Web apps using a connection string that has a specific SQL user identified.

Last night app 1 was using profile 1 like usual and app 3 was using profile 3 like usual. This this morning (7 hours later) App 3 was sending from profile 1 everytime a call to sp_send_dbmail was made. Not good. App 1 was still correctly sending from profile 1.

We ran a call to sp_send_dbmail from a query window using profile 3 and it sent using the correct profile 3. We used the Database Mail right-click option of "Send Test Email..." to both profiles and they worked as expected.

Our investigation showed that in the Database Mail configuration wizard "Manage Profile Security" section Private Profiles tab... the User name that is used to call the stored procedures from web app 3's sp_send_DBMail did not have access to profile 3 anymore. It did have access to 5 of the other 7 profiles. 1 of the no access profiles was legitimate #7.

The only thing that has been changed lately was, 2 days ago a mail profile was deleted as it was no longer used. We used the Database Mail Configuration Wizard to remove it.

Can't Connect .Net Application From Windows Server 2003 To Database Server (SQL Server 2000)

Apr 3, 2008

Hi,
I am having a problem connecting my .net applications from the application server to the database server. When I run the application from my windows xp (sp2) box it works fine. When I try to connect via SQL Management Studio to the database server from the application server I get the same error.
Here is the error:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
Here is the Environment:
App Server:
Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition
Inside Company's Firewall/ Network
Database Server:
Windows Server 2000 Advanced Edition
SQL Server 2000 SP4
Remote Connections to the Server is checked
Enable Protocols: Named Pipes & TCP/IP
TCP/IP Port: 1402 (I don't know why it isn't the default of 1433)
The db server is sitting out side the Company's firewall (don't ask me why). I can access it fine from inside the firewall on my XP box but not from windows server 2003. There is a web server outside the our network that also connects to the db server with no problem and that is running Windows Server 2003 Web Edition.
I can ping the db server from the app server using the IP address.
I tried using the IP address and the port 1402 in my connection string but that didn't work from any machine (XP and Server).
I imagine the issue is somehow related to the company's firewall but why would it only block Windows Server 2003 and not XP?
What do I tell the network admin to change?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Oran

Unable To Connect To SQL Server Database.

Oct 15, 2007

Hi, I am working through "Sams Teach Yourself ASP Dot NET 2.0 in 24 Hours"
I am upto hour 20 where it says
Configuring an ASP.NET Website to Support Membership
To configure our website to support membership, we must launch the ASP.NET Website Administration Tool. To accomplish this, either click the ASP.NET
Configuration icon at the top of the Solution Explorer or click the Website menu's ASP.NET Configuration option. Either way will open a web browser pointed to a page through which the ASP.NET site can be configured. Figure 20.1 shows the ASP.NET Website Administration Tool.
To add user account support, click the Security link. This will take you to the Security screen shown in Figure 20.2. From this screen, you can specify the user accounts in your system, what roles for users exist, and the access rules for users.
However when I click security I get the following error message;
"There is a problem with your selected data store. This can be caused by an invalid server name or credentials, or by insufficient permission. It can also be caused by the role manager feature not being enabled. Click the button below to be redirected to a page where you can choose a new data store."
"The following message may help in diagnosing the problem: Unable to connect to SQL Server database."
If I test the provider I get this error;
"Provider Management""Could not establish a connection to the database.""If you have not yet created the SQL Server database, exit the Web Site Administration tool, use the aspnet_regsql command-line utility to create and configure the database, and then return to this tool to set the provider."
I am using MS VWD Express with MS SQL Express. I have run the 'aspnet_regsql' tool on my database which the book fails to mention and verified that the tables were created correctly. I have tried copying the MDF file directly into my 'app_data' directory but this made no difference. I have googled these errors and nothing seems to help. I can connect to the database through a 'SqlDataSource' and have had no trouble with the database in the previous sections of the book. I think it may have something to do with how I setup SQL Express or database permissions, I hope someone can help. Thanks in advance.
