Cannot Connect To Remote SSRS Instance With SSMS
Jun 13, 2006
I recent installed a named instance of SSRS 2005 on a remote server. The server has a side by side install of SSRS 2000 and SSRS 2005, with the SSRS 2005 being a named instance. The server also has SSL and MS Sharepoint Portal Server installed.
When I try and connect to the SSRS 2005 instance with my client install of Mangement Studio, I get the error message:
"The underlying connection was closed: Could not establish a trust relationship for the SSL/TLS secure channel. (System.Web.Services)
Additional Information: The remote certificate is invalid according to the validation procedure. (System)."
Obviously, this is a SLL issue, but, not being a security guru, I have no clue on how to fix this. I do know the certificate is valid, not expired and properly working. Both installs of SSRS are set up using the SSL certificate. Also, I am not connecting to SSIS with Management Studio, as I heard there is a bug connecting to both SSRS and SSIS at the same time.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!!
Jeff

I have installed a SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition instance with SSIS on Window Server 2003 x64. From my PC, I am able to connect to the Integration Services on the server using Windows Authentication but not with a local SQL login - and the option to change authentication methods is greyed out.
Is it possible to remotely connect to SSIS using a SQL login rather than a Windows login? If so, any ideas or references for configuring it as such?
Thanks.

I've two instances(Default, Named[dynamicsFINANCE]) running on SQL server 2014. However, when I try to connect to named instance say (dynamicsFINANCE) using SQL authentication from local SSMS, I get below error message:
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1)
I assigned a static port number to the named instance [dynamicsFINANCE] 1450. I also setup the firewall rule to allow access to Port 1450.

Hi,
In a nutshell I'm unable to connect to SSRS within SSMS yet I can connect to SSIS, SSAS and the Database Engine within SSMS from the same named server instance ("BOODEMO")
"SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration" reports that service status SSRS (DEMO) is running.
The only other problem that I have found which may be linked is that within "Reporting Services Configuration Manager BOODEMO" there is a red circled crossed next to "Report Manager Virtual Directory", yet this application has just recently reported that I successfully created a virtual directory.
Any help or constructive guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Kieran.

We have 3x instances of SQL Server 2012 installed on a single remote server - there's the default MSSQLSERVER instance, then INSTANCE01 and INSTANCE02. I can remotely connect to the default MSSQLSERVER instance through SSMS, but I cannot connect to either of the additional named instances (INSTANCE01 or INSTANCE02).Â
For example, if I try to connect to "sql.domain.com", I can successfully access the default instance on the remote server. If I try to connect to "sql.domain.comINSTANCE01", I get an error stating
"A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server".
However - if I try to connect to "sql.domain.comINSTANCE01, 49301" (where 49301 is the TCP Port for the TCP/IP Protocol for this SQL Server instance), I am able to successfully connect.
This leads me to think that there's a communication issue with the SQL Server Browser service running on the remote SQL Server and my workstation.Â
The following items have been verified:
SQL Server Browser is running on the remote SQL ServerWindows Firewall has been disabled on the SQL ServerTCP Ports 1433, 1434, 1954, and 49301 have been opened up on the remote destination's firewallUDP Port 1434 has been opened up on the remote destination's firewall.

I have a 3 node cluster on which I have installed SSAS as it's own insntance. I have created this as a named instance and can connect to it by serverinstance if I'm on the server itself. However from my desktop I get the error saying instance was not found on server name.
I have defined an alternate port and setup firewall rules and can connect via server:port but not serverinstance. Prior to making this change SSAS was running on default port of 2383 and I could connect just by servername.
I have read many articles for previous versions saying that clustered SSAS will always use 2383 and that you must connect just using servername. However and this is were it gets strange. I have a 2 node UAT cluster with SSAS setup exactly the same way I've described above and I can connect from my desktop as serverinstance.
Should I be able to connect as serverinstances for a named clustered instance in 2012 ?

We have a 2 servers  with 2 default instances,Â
Environment- SQL server 2012 SP2 | Windows Server 2008 R2
1server:
hostname-serverA , Instance-serverA and port-2040 Ip-192.164.1.1
2server:
hostname-serverB , Instance-serverB and port-2040 Ip-192.164.1.2
If i do a SSMS connection-the possible connections strings which can be used to connect to Instance "serverB" should be,
a.serverBserverB
b.serverB,2040
c.192.164.1.2,2040
Note: but even the connection string "serverBserverA,2040" also connects to Instance "serverB", when i try to connect from SSMS, In SSMS it shows the wrong instance name like, "serverBserverB", but it actually connects to  Instance "serverA"
i.what is the reason behind this?
ii.Is there any way to avoid this connection, by performing server property changes, if any ?

connecting to a SQL Server Instance. I have a SQL server DB on a server having an Instance not running on the default port. Let's say ServerAInstanceA has the services exposed on Port 12345. When I'm trying to connect to ServerAInstanceA without specifying the port number, while I can connect from one client machine (ClientA), I am unable to connect from a different client machine (ClientB).On a side note, when I provide the port number, I can connect both from clients A and B. My question is, when I do not provide the port number, why is one client machine able to connect while the other isn't?

One of the instance is hosted in a cluster node with 128GB of ram and 80 processors allocated to this instance...And last week, we had an issue with temp DB as it was full.We increased the drive space over the weekend.
Now whenever we connect this instance from other server through remote SSMS, we see, refreshing the object including connecting to this instance is very very slow...It takes more than 10 sec. Initially this was not the case. Even hear from end user that the application is performing gradually slow.
I check the network, fregmentation, settings across this instance, and all looks good.

I've installed SQL Server 2005 SP1 RTM on a Windows 2003 R2 machine (machine A), and my local workstation (machine B).
From machine B, I can use SSMS to connect to SQL Server on machine A. This is using either "New Query" or "Object Explorer".
However, on machine A, SSMS can only connect to machines A or B using the "New Query" option. If I try "Object Explorer" for either, I get the error message "Failed to retrieve data for this request... urn could not be resolved at level Configuration."
I'm not sure what died (no pun intended) since the last time this worked. Any thoughts on this?

We are running SQL 2005 Standard on Windows 2000 Server Standard. We are trying to connect via SSMS with the Object Explorer to the server and it is failing with an error message stating:
"An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch.
Additional Information:
Error executing extended stored procedure: Invalid Parameter (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 22001)
Using profiler, I tracked down that it is a call to xp_instance_regread. This is something that SSMS is issuing - not me.
We've found in the past that rebooting the server fixes the problem. But it keeps cropping up. The only thing running on this server is SQL 2005 - so if something is monkeying with the registry - it's got to be SQL Server itself.
Querying works just fine - we can use the editor to perform queries without any issue - it's just explorer that goes kaboom.
We have SP2a installed on the server and on most (if not all) of the clients.
This is getting frustrating because it's a production server and we're having to reboot this to fix it.

Every time I start SSMS 2012 the "Connect to Server" box is partially obscured in that the top of it, the move bar can't be accessed. I've manually moved it using "alt+space" then "M" followed by the arrow keys, but it's getting annoying. Â Is there any way to change the initial start position of this box?Â

Hi,
I am able to run an SSIS script from BI Visual Studio no problem, I am also able to connect to SSIS within SSMS successfully. I have system access rights to the Database Engine of the same server name.
However I have a user who also has full system access rights to the Database Engine of the same server name. However he can only connect to the database engine, he cannot connect to SSIS within SSMS, but he can successfully execute a SSIS script within BI Visual Studio which is targeted to the same server name which he can€™t connect to within SSMS.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Kind Regards,

Hi ALL,
The sub report has stored procedure which uses ##temp table,to get it's results.
Stored procedure code is:
set ANSI_NULLS ON
set QUOTED_IDENTIFIER OFF
GO
ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[rpt_FAP_Profile_claim] @TABLE_NM varchar(50),@MBR_ID varchar(50)

--SET @SQL_TXT = 'SELECT TOP 100 * FROM CLAIM'
EXEC(@SQL_TXT)
When I run this in SSMS gives error::-

How do I make it work and get the result in my sub report. Is any properties needs to be set in the SSMS or SSRS sub report or any other modificatons?.Or is some thing wrong in the temp table?.Plz help.

Hi,
I have gone through so many kb articles to understanding the problem, but no luck as yet.
Here is the situation:
I have two dev servers : Server A and Server B. Both are set up in an identical fashion. Windows 2003 sp2, Sql Server 2005 sp1 Developer Edition, both are on the same domain, Both have all the three protocols enabled: Shared Memory, Tcpip, and Named Pipes in that order. I can ping both servers, and telnet using the default port. Both have only default instances. Both use the same domain user account for sql service. Both have the error in the log saying that spn could not be registered so authentication may fall back to NTLM.
Here is the issue: When I try to register Server A specifying tcp-ip connection, I am successful and I can see that the authentication is NTLM - is as expected. since the spn registration did not happen and since the sqlservice account is not a domain admin, the authentication used NTLM over tcp-ip. However, I try to register Server B specifying tcpip, I get a cannot generate sspi context error. Why did the authentication not fall back to NTLM as in Server A? From what I read in the KB articles, I asked our network admin to check up the spn, but he assures me that spn were never manually registered.
Can somebody throw more light on this issue?
Thanks

I'm using ssms 2014, but got the same problem with 2012. I use ssms almost entirely on remote desktop sessions ( Windows 7, Server 2008R2, Server 2012 ). It may be related to having filtered job activity monitor windows open for hours, but about once per day ssms fails, and has to restart. Upon resuming usually only one of several queries is restored.

Because of a performance problem, somebody has given me a script which came from a SSRS report.
The code as supplied does not work when multivalued parameters are used.
Testing/tuning/building in SSMS is far superiour than in SSRS. So that's why I like to use SSRS for building the code/script/sql-statement.
Offcourse parameters have to be set correctly. (That is no problem).
Splitting of the multivalued parameter is not a problem either.

Have installed SQL 2008 on Windows 2008 and have come across a strange issue.
Â
When connecting to the Report Server cvia SSMS to enable "My Reports" (for example) the Report Server Properties are greyed out and we cannot alter them. This occurs when logged on both locally & remotely to the Win 2008 server.
Â
Interestingly, we have another (XP Pro) box with SQL 2008 on it. If we connect to the Win 2008 SQL report server from the XP machine's SSMS, then we have full control and can access and change the report server properties on the Win 2008 server.Â
Â
The relevant domain accounts are in the Admin group on the Win 2008 server and the XP Server so we are confused as to why we cannot edit the Win 2008 report server properties locally.

I am trying to connect to an instance of SQL Express through a vpn, simply using the SQL Management Studio, providing the server ip address x.x.x.xMSSQLSERVER, and using SQL authentication login. I receive the following message:
Cannot connect to <server>, etc., etc.
error 25: - Connection string is not valid
Does anyone understand this? I am trying to connect through the SQL Server Management interface, not with a client program that would utilize a connection string. Is there something which prevents Management Studio from working over a vpn?
To connect, I am using SQL authentication, and have verified the login and password locally on the target pc. The SQL browser service is running on the target pc, and I can telnet to the port which it is monitoring, through the same vpn connection. Remote connections are enabled for TCP/IP in the Surface Area configuration on the target pc.
Any help appreciated.
