Help me please!
I've installed SQL Express 2005 on my XP. I'm trying to create a database but I keep getting the error no matter what I do.
Msg 1802, Level 16, State 4, Server MYCOMPUTERSQLSERV, Line 1
CREATE DATABASE failed. Some file names listed could not be created. Check related errors.
Msg 5123, Level 16, State 1, Server MYCOMPUTERSQLSERV, Line 1
CREATE FILE encountered operating system error 5(error not found) while attempting to open or create the physical file 'C:Program FilesExos9300DatabaseExos93.mdf'.

Hi, I am trying to open or create a sqlexpress database within Visual Studio 2005 Professional in the App_Data folder. If I attempt either method, I get the following dialog box:Required Components MissingConnections to SQL Server files (*.mdf) require SQL Server Express 2005 to function properly. I have both SQL Server 2005 Developer and SQL Server 2005 Expression instances running. The existing database will work properly in my web application, however I cannot access it through Visual Studio.As background, I did have a problem connecting to the database via the web application, receiving a "Failed to generate a User Instance of SQL Server" error. But I was able to fix that by renaming my SQLEXPRESS folder in C:Documents and SettingsuserLocal SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL Server Data. When the web page ran, it created another SQLEXPRESS folder.However, I cannot figure out why I am having the other issue.Thanks in advancePatrick

In my SQL Server Express (that is installed in my Windows XP Pro PC), SQL Server 2005 Network Configuration has Protocols for SQLEXPRESS. I tried to do "Enabling CLR Integration" in my SQL Server Express: (1) If I clicked on "Surface Area Configuration for Services and Connections", I got an error "An exception occurred in SMO while trying to manage a service, (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo) Additional information: Failed to retrieve data for this request. (Microsoft.SqlServer.SmoEnum) The operation could not be completed. (WinMgmt). (2) If I clicked on "Surface Area Configuration for Features, I got a different error "Computer localhost does not exist on the network, or the computer cannot be configured remotely. Verify that the remote computer has the required computer has the required Windows Management Instrumentation components and then try again. (SQLSAC) Additional Information: An exception occurred in SMO while trying to manage a service. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo). Failed to retrieve data for this request. Hello,
Does anyone else ever experience this problem, and if so do you know what causes it:
When ever I restore a database called say XXX.mdf, it restores OK and I can view via MSE as XXX.mdf. Then when I visit MSE again there is another database called C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataXXX.mdf - both are linked to the same .mdf file, however if you try to expand XXX.mdf nothing happens as though the database has been detached?

I use Visual Studio 2005 Standard. I would like to know the best way that I can create Sql Server 2005 Express databases visually since VS2005 Std. does not allow me to do it.

I'd be interested in knowing how VS doesn't allow you to create a database. What error are you getting?
There are two ways to create databases, depending on your goal:
To just create a database on your server, do the following:
Open the Server Explorer
Right-click on Data Connections
Click Create New SQL Server Database
Specify Server Name and Database Name
Your database will be created and you can start working with it.
Embed a database in your project:
On the Project menu, click Add New Item.
Select SQL Database from the list and give it a name.
Click OK
This will run you thorugh a wizard to create the database.
If your having problems doing either of these, you may not have SQL Server installed on your computer or VS might be pointing to the wrong Instance Name. Check out the Option dialog under Database Tools:ata Connection and verify that the correct instance is specified.

"An error has occured while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this

I've got about 2 months worth of daily databases created in SQL Express 2005 for a pilot project, which the client is converting to a purchase. Unfortunately they're using SQL Server 2000 and I can't figure out how to migrate the databases to the older version. All my searching turns up how to do it in the expected direction.
Any pointers to how or where to search appreciated.

I am trying to figure out the best method for transferring SQL 2005 databases from 2 different physical servers to a new server running windows server 2008 64bit.I own a fully registered copy of Microsoft SQL 2005 32bit Standard Edition. However all of my SQL databases together are only 4GB in size thereby making 2008 SQL Express an option.
Here is the breakdown of the servers:
1) (Old Server1) Windows 2003 Server 32bit - SQL Express 2005 32bit
2) (Old Server2) Windows 2003 Server 32bit - SQL Server 2005 32bit Standard
3) (New Server) Windows 2008 Server 64bit - (Not sure which version to install)
**The objective is to migrate 2 SQL databases from Old Server1 and 1 SQL database from Old Server 2 to the New Server. What version should I install on the new server??? Do I go with 2008 express or install the 2005 Standard Edition?
Pending your response to which version to install, what are the correct steps to migrate (which I have never done before) the databases from both of these servers to the new server? I think this particular situation is unique in that I am transferring from both SQL Express and Standard from 2 different physical servers to a 2008 server that is 64bit.

Help, don't quite understand, or more likely I've missed the point!
Using VWD 2005 Express, I can create, manage/modify and SQL 2005 database aswell as maintain any data I enter into it. Fine, no problem there. However, when it comes to doing the same kind of thing with the database using MSSQL 2005 Management Studio Express, I remain mystified!?
Any database I create above, through VWD 2005 Express, shows as being an attached DB in SQL MSExp and I'm able to detach and re-attach them. However, they are always attached as read only files so are unmodifiable!!!
So... What is it I'm missing? What do I have to do to be able detach, attach, re-attach such databases in a modifiable form, ie NOT read-only
Pulling my hair out over this one, so any advice gratefully rec'd

Also, does anyone know of a link(s) on the vast msdn website that explains how to use this software? All I've found so far, are a lot of pages telling what it can do not how to do it.

Apologies if this has been asked before, i've done a search but can't find a definitive answer.
I've created a table in an SQLExpress 2005 db using Server Managment Studio Express.
My intention is to use GUID fields as surrogate PK's. I therefore wanted to add a additional index to prevent duplicate records being added to the table. Not having used SQLServer before could someone confirm or deny that this is the correct way to do this. The PK field [EPISODEID{unique identifier}] is set as a non-clustered index. And i've created a second clustered index using the two fields that create a unique record. I've added a screen shot if that is any help.

I have installed on my PC Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition which installed SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. In addition I downloaded and installed SQL Server Management Studio Express(SSME).
Now using SSME I can connect into SQL server express with the default login that was created by the installation. I want to create a new login:
Right click on Security > New > Login
I filled in all the details. However, when I click OK I get the following error:
Create failed for Login 'Mauriceewlogin'. Windows NT user or group 'Mauriceewlogin' not found. Check the name again.
Please, help. I am getting fraustrated with this error.

I am learning SQL on my own computer and I am having difficult creating a new DataBase. I am using SQL Server Manabgement Studio Express. I installed SQL Server Express 2005 and was able to install the sample databases. I have been working through the on-line tutorial. In Lesson 4 of the tutorial it instructs you to select File, New, Project. However, when I select File, New there is no Project choice listed. Have I failed to install something correctly?

Hi,
I have a script that performs an unattended installation of SQL Server and works fine.
However, if I un-install via the control panel all the files are removed apart from the databases that are created by me when SQl server was installed. This is good and ensures data is not deleted.
The files left over are in the following directory:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData
and contains:
MyDatabase.mdf
MyDatabase_log.LDF
The problem I have is after performing the re-installtion of SQL server (unattended) I am unable to create a new database with the same name (in this instance called "myDatabase").
The actual files are physically there so this is the reason a new database with the same name cannot be creacted.
Again this is ok again because it ensures I cannot overwrite existing data. However I am unable to re-attach this database to SQl server so I can continue to use it!
The question is:
How do I make this database usable again after an unattended install? Is there a parameter I am missing?
Below are the commands I use that are passed to the installation of SQL Server as command line parameters:

Hello all,
Being still a relative newcomer to SQL Server (people may say I'm trying to take on too much being somewhat inexperienced once they read about the problem I'm trying to tackle, but alas...) I'm running into the following problem: I need to create tables in my user database on the fly (using Stored Procedures) so that each table can be created many times in the database but only once for every user. The tables should be named something like "username.Table1", "username.Table2" etc. as opposed to "dbo.Table1". I then want to use the stored procedure from .NET/C# in my web application, so that i can create the complete set of usertables for each of my clients.
Now, I tackled the stored procedure part (that is, it creates all the tables I need with all the parameters I want) and am able to use it from my web application (which took some time to learn but proved quite easy to do), but I cannot seem to get it coupled to the current user (instead of the dbo). Every time I trie, the tables are created as dbo.Table1 and when I try to create a new set, it gives a warning ("table with name such and so already exists..."). I made sure to log in as an authenticated user (using forms authentication) before trying to create the tables but this gives the aforementioned result.
What am I doing wrong? I use Visual Web Developer Express, SQL Server 2005 Express and IIS version 5.1

Hi,When I attempt to add the membership functionality to a database created within VWD Express, by using the aspnet_regsql.exe application (connecting to ./SQLEXPRESS using Windows authentication), the database I've created within VWD Express doesn't appear within the list of accessible databases. I have the same problem when attempting to access the same database within Management Studio Express.Does this mean that databases created from within VWD Express don't use the same storage mechanism or paradigm as those already available within Management Studio Express? Or perhaps I need to somehow register the database using Management Studio Express? As a side note, I'm not sure if the "File/Open File" menu option within Management Studio Express holds the answer to my problems, but rather bizarrely, it crashes Management Studio Express when I select it.Apologies for the rambling - in essence my question is "How can I make databases created within VWD Express appear within aspnet_regsql.exe and/or Management Studio Express?"Many thanks,Jon

I'm trying to learn some VB programming with the VB 2005 Express Absolute Beginner Series video tutorials (which I think is great) and have come across a problem that I can't solve.
When I follow the instructions in Lesson 9 (Databinding Data to User Interface Controls) my application will display the data from the database correctly and I can edit it (and as long as the debugger is running the data remains changed). However, the changes won't propagate back to the database. I don't get any error messages but after I edit the data, save (with the save button on the BindingNavigator toolbar), and end debugging the data in my database remains unchanged. When I use a MessageBox to show how many rows where edited/updated in the
Me.myTableTableAdapter.Update(Me.myDatabaseDataSet.myTable)
I get the correct number back. I'm sure the problem is not due to coding errors since I've also tried running the accompanying Lesson 9 project file that can be downloaded from MSDN and the problem persists.
I'm using Windows XP SP2, SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and VB 2005 Express Edition. I've tried installing SQL Server 2005 Express with a number of different settings, including default settings, but it doesn't make any difference.
Would greatly appreciate any feedback on this as I'm keen to resolve this problem so I can get on with the next tutorial lesson.

I see under databases in the object explorer of SQL Server Management Studio that there are two sub-folders: System Databases and Database Snapshots.
Is there a way to create other folders here? It would be nice to be able to group the various databases (ex. Samples).

I am using Visual Studio 2008 and have created a .mdf database within my project. I want to be able to do a few things and I am not quite sure where to start. The program I am writing manages rental properties. Thus, each rental property that the user owns needs its own sql express database. For this to work:
1. I need to be able to dynamically create a database for each property that the user owns.
Is it best to do this as described here http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb399420.aspx ? Or is it best to have a template database and then make a duplicate of the database using the File.Copy() method.
If it is best to do it programatically as shown in the link above, how do you create relationships between tables?
2. I need to be able to dynamically add users to the database via c# code. How does one do this? Is it possible do through LINQ?
Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks

I cant find how i can do that in VB.net Express.In Web developer there are no problem to connect to a remote SQL server but i cant find it in VB.net Express. This problem only occurs after deployment, not when debugging. In the table I am having a problem with I have an ID field designated as the primary key with the identity increment set to 1 and the identity seed set to 1. There is no data in the table when deployed. I can add records to the datagridview control but when I try updating the dataset I get this error indicating that the ID field already has a value of 1 present. If I close the application and re-start it, the exception no longer occurrs when I update the dataset. I am including the code to update the tables incase something is wrong there. Any suggestions?
