Cannot Delete/disable "Mystery" Database Backup

Jul 23, 2002

Please, help. Let me start by saying that I have asked several DBA's this question, none of which have been able to provide a solution. I have a very annoying problem. An additional backup of my SQL Server 7 database is recurring every day and it is hogging up space on the server. I only want one recurring backup.

When checking my database backup plan, it seems there is only one backup instance: qarun_1099_release1_db_200207170200.BAK and qarun_1099_release1_tlog_200207170600.TRN. However, when I look in the default backup directory, SQL/Database/Backup, there is an instance in addition to the backup mentioned above with another name: qarun_1099_release1. This "mystery" backup is neither a .BAK or .TRN, but simply a file? I cannot figure out how and where this extra backup is recurring and I want to delete it.

I have tried disabling the jobs in the sysjobsteps and sysjobs tables of the msdb database, but this did not work! The backups are still recurring every day!

Please advise.

Sincerely,

Brett

Backup Mystery

Jan 31, 2000

I have created a maintenance plan which backups to a device which I have created. However the device does not show in explorer and maintenance plan cannot find it when it trys to open the device. Consequently I'm not getting a backup.
Even if I delete the device and re create it things don't change.

Running SQL 7 SP1 on NT SP5 with SMS 2 SP1.

Any help gratefully received....

Mystery Backup?

Jan 28, 2000

I was working at a customer site and wanted to verify that backups were indeed being run successfully before I began to make changes.

I noticed a dump device for the production database with the nightly backup in it but I cannot find the task that produces this dump. I did find the task that dumps the log each hour.

Is there another area that some of you DBAs used to schedule dumps other than the task manager that I might be missing? Maybe an AT job?

Thanks.

Mystery Database IDs In Profiler

Jul 23, 2005

I'm currently running Profiler sessions to track down Lock Timeoutproblems. My Profiler view contains (amongst others) the dbid column.Much of the time, this displays familiar dbids, such as 2 (tempdb) and5 (my main user db). However, it also regularly displays IDs of 0 and132.Using SELECT DB_NAME(), these translate as "master" and "NULL"respectively.Does anyone know:a) why dbid = 0 translates to "master", when the actual id of thisdatabase is 1, andb) why Profiler reports these dbids in the first place?

The Backup Set Holds A Backup Of A Database Other Than Existing Database. Restore Database Is Terminating Abnormally

Apr 9, 2008

I have a problem when i restore my .DAT_BAK file. I am getting error like "The backup set holds a backup of a database other than existing database. Restore Database is terminating abnormally".

I tried by using

RESTORE DATABASE <DATABASENAME>
FROM DISK = 'D:DATAMYTEST.DAT_BAK'
WITH MOVE 'VZAI_DATA' TO D:PROGRAM FILES..MSSQLTEST.MDF',
MOVE 'VZAI_LOG' TO D:PROGRAM FILES..MSSQLTEST.LDF',
REPLACE

And also i tried like

RESTORE DATABASE <DATABASENAME>
FROM DISK = 'D:DATAMYTEST.DAT_BAK'

WITH REPLACE

When i use like this,

RESTORE FILELISTONLY FROM DISK = 'D:DATAMYTEST.DAT_BAK'. I am able to get the output as LogicalName, PhysicalName, Type, FileGroupName, Size, etc.

Can i anyone please help me out?

Delete Backup From Backup Device?

Apr 16, 2004

I dump my databases to backup devices each night.

However would like to purge old backups - say older than a week - from the device.

Is it a case that I have to drop and re-create the devices every 7 days or can SQL do this for me?

I have seen the RETAINDAYS claus but it applies to tape backups only?

BACKUP LOG Cannot Be Performed Because There Is No Current Database Backup. BACKUP LOG Is Terminating Abnormally.

Jan 31, 2008

Hi there

I'm getting this message on my third automated backup of the transaction logs of the day. Both databases are in full recovery mode, both successfully backed up at 01.00. The transaction logs backed up perfectly happily at 01:30 and 05:30, but failed at 09:30.

The only difference between 05:30 and 09:30's backups is that the log files were shrunk at 08:15 (the databases in question are the ones that sit under ILM2007, and keeping the log files small keeps the system running better).

Is it possible that shrinking the log files causes the database to think that there hasn't been a full database backup?

Thanks

Jane

Master Data Services :: Hard Delete All Soft Delete Records (members) In Database

May 19, 2012

I am using Master Data Service for couple of months now. I can load, update, merge and soft delete data in MDS. Occasionally we even have to hard delete data from MDS. If we keep on soft deleting records in a MDS table eventually there will be huge number of soft deleted records. Is there an easy way to hard delete all the soft deleted records from all MDS tables in a specific Model.

How To Disable/enable Jobs For Database That Has Failed Over

Nov 22, 2006

Hi,

I currently have serverA importing data from an AS400 oledb connection and serverB on hot-standby as a mirror. The data import is being performed via an SSIS scheduled job.

I've yet to implement any solution in the following case:
If the database on serverA fails, it will failover to the mirror. But the jobs will still be on serverA. Ideally, I'm assuming the jobs should not run on serverB since it will be attempting to update the mirrored database. So, I am wondering if both servers can have identical copies of SSIS packages and jobs and simply (?) enable or disable them based on which server will be hosting the principal database.

Is there any solution where the jobs can automatically be disabled on the server with the mirrored database and enabled on the principal database depending on its status?

Can I EXPORT Tables To A Backup DB And Delete Them From My Production Server?

Jul 23, 2005

I have a database file approximately 30GB in size which creates 3 datatables daily. I need to reduce the size of the DB due to disk sizelimitations. Could I EXPORT some tables, let us say over thirty daysold, to something like DB_Name_Archieve and them delete them from theproduction DB to reduce the size? I also need the ability toreference/read them at a later time as needed. As a side note, could SQL Server use data on a redirected drive i.e.NET Used. This would allow me to move the old tables to the redirecteddrive and reference them as needed. As always, thanks in advance.Peter

SQL 2000 Fails To Delete Old Backup Files From The Network Share

Jul 21, 2006

Hello,

I am experiencing an issue with SQL Server 2000 Maintenance Plan.
DB Backup job fails to delete old backup files from the file server (I am backing up to the network share - actually, a DFS).
Backup part of the maintenance plan/job succeeds, but then cleanup part fails.

I made sure that service account under which SQL Server Agent is running, has sufficient privileges over the network share by logging in and successfully deleting files in question.

I was not able to locate any log entries either on the SQL Server machine or on the file server machine that would indicate the root of the problem. Even though I turned on auditing for Delete operations for the destination folder, its subfolders and files, I could not find anything in the Security event log.

I would appreciate any ideas on how to troubleshoot and correct this problem.

Thanks in advance,

Bcp Mystery

Mar 4, 1999

I have a table Catalog_Item with 365000 rows. I wish to move the contents of the table to an identical database on a different server using bcp. The table has no primary keys, foreign keys, or indexes. I am able to successfully bcp out the data in character format and native format.

I attempt to bcp the data in to the identical table on the other server, but
the bcp ALWAYS fails at 19000 or 20000 rows; it does not complete, just hangs there in the command window, with no more info. When I use a small data set of 5000 rows, the same happens at the end of those 5000. I have tried to redo the bcp in native mode, and character mode. I have tried to specify the first line starts at 125000. I have tried to bcp the data into a different database on a different server; that also quits at 19000 or 20000 rows.

BCP of other large data sets into the same database occurs smoothly. Only this combination of table and data set is giving this problem.

any ideas?

SQL 2012 :: SSDT Database Project - Cross DB Trigger Enable / Disable Gives Warning 71502

Jul 13, 2015

I have 2 dbs (SQL 2012) - one contains a trigger that is enabled/disabled by a procedure in the other database. This all works fine.

If I create a Database Project solution in Visual Studio 2012 SSDT (or 2013) for both databases, the stored procedure generates a SQL71502 stating that my trigger name can't be resolved.

To recreate the issue:

CREATE DATABASE DbWithTrigger
GO
USE DbWithTrigger
GO
CREATE TABLE dbo.TblWithTrigger(
Id int NULL,
SomeValue varchar(30) NULL

[code]....

-- Test to confirm

EXEC CrossDbTriggerCall
INSERT DbWithTrigger.dbo.TblWithTrigger VALUES(1, 'Blah blah')

In Visual Studio 2012:

1. Create a new solution with a project named DbWithTrigger
2. In project settings set the Target platform to SQL 2012
2. Import the DbWithTrigger db into this project
3. Create a new project named DbCallsTrigger
4. In project settings set the Target platform to SQL 2012
5. Import the DbCallsTrigger db into this project
6. Add a Database Reference in DbCallsTrigger for DbWithTrigger

When you build the solution both dbs build successfully, however there are two warnings. One is easily resolved by replacing DbWithTrigger in the body of the procedure with [$(DbWithTrigger)] (db variable name for the reference) but I can't find out how to get rid of the other. Is it a bug?

Recovery :: Differential Backup Much Larger Than Database / Full Backup

Nov 16, 2015

I have a database that is just over 1.5GB and the Full backup that is 13GB not sure how this is since we have compression on for full backups and my other full backups are much smaller than there respective databases...Now my full backup is taken every Sunday night and the differentials are taken every 6 hours after the full backup. Now I have been thrown into this DBA role with little to no experience just what I have picked up and read. So my understanding of backups are limited but what I think I understand is that we take a full backup and the differential only captures what changes in the database so my question is why is my database 1.5GB but my differential is 15.4GB? I have others database that are on the same instance and don't seem to have this problem. I also just noticed that we do not rebuild the index before a full backup like we do on other instances...

Connection Mystery

Apr 13, 2005

I am having trouble connecting to an SQL Server from an ASP.NET page
written in C#.  I have reduced the code in my page to this: public void Page_Load( object s, EventArgs e ) {

SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection( "Server=server;User ID=user;Password=pass;" );
 conn.Open();

} and I get the following error:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: SQL Server does not exist or access denied.

This
works for other server/user/pass except the one I am having trouble
with.  The SQL Server is using SQL & Windows Authentication.  I am
able to connect from the machine that is running the webserver via
osql, ODBC, and MS Access using the same arguments (server, user, and
pass), so I know that the SQL server does exist, and the User/Password
should give me access. Does anyone have any ideas why this
isn't working or what ASP.NET is does differently from the other access
methods?  Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mark Dane
