This is a curious installation problem. After removing SQL Server 2005 from a client machine and reinstalling it, the local database files and folders related to them are missing. Repeated attempts to reinstall selecting all options have not been successful. The setup program seems to think that they are already on the machine, although they are not (Yes, I searched the disk looking for instances of master.mdf, tempdb.mdf, etc. and found nothing). This installation is from an image that has worked on other computers, and I'm reasonably sure that it isn't corrupted.
Does anyone have any ideas for a solution to this problem?

I installed Visual Studio 2005 (released edition) that I downloaded from MSDN, and then went to install the released edition of SQL Server 2005. On the SQL Server 2005 setup "components to install" screen, all but the last choice ("Workstation components, Books Online, and development tools" are grayed out so I cannot install them. The machine on which I was installing these had just been re-imaged and was clean. How do I get around this so I can install SQL Server2005? Hi Folks,
I'm receiving an error when i'm trying to setup a maintenance plan. I'm getting weird errors (and cannot continue) and i'm thinking it's related to a 32 bit error i received during installation on a 64 bit edition.
Background
We have a sql server behind hosted on a dedicated 64 bit box out of SanFran. The hosting company installed the 32 bit version of SqlServer 2005 standard on the box and I requested them to remove it and put the 64 bit edition on. They removed the 32 bit edition and installed the 64 bit edition. So far so good. I installed sp1 and that was fine. I then tried to start a MAINTENCE PLAN and was denied -> the component was not installed. I've asked them to install the component and they did, but they recorded an error during the install. The error screen shot is here: http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/5089/errormessagehs4.png
Now i cannot drop any tasks onto the maintenence plan ... so i'm assuming it's related to the above error. Is there any way i can determine what the 32 bit component is, remove it and re-install the correct component? Is there an error log somewhere where i can check things?
This is stopping me from setting up any backup plans :(
Regards,
Justin.

Hi,
I have been trying to install SQL Server 2005 developer version on my second laptop IBM Thinkpad Windows XP PRO, for the first time. All other components installed successfully except the database. I 've tried selecting the named instance and default instance it didn't make any difference. I have a Admin role on the laptop and as a service id I selected my user id. password and domain. I am running the setup behind my company's firewall.

Dear Forum,
our goal is to install SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP1. So far we used to install SQL Server 2005 Express Edition which resulted in the Version 9.00.1399 (basic run time machine).
We noticed that SP1 is almost the same sice as the basic run time machine. Still, we then we applied SP1. during the installation, at the window "Existing Components", the "SQL Server Database Services 9.00.1399.06 is listed with a check box. When I tick the box, the installation can continue. SP1 resulted in the version 9.00.2047. (checked on sqlservr.exe).
my question: can we install directly SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP1 without any previous SQL Server installation at all to save installation time (and errors)?
I do now that the service packs are considered "cumulative", so SP2 includes SP1, but I do not know of SP1 includes the basice runtime machine.
thanks for your answers

Currently I am just trying to completely remove all Vista Ultimate's knowledge of installed instances of SQLServer 2005 Developer edition.
I cannot do this for some reason. This all began when I tried to install SQLServer 2005 and it installed but I could not connect to it. Now I have two installed instances that I cannot access, after removing all SQL programs from the Programs and Features icon in the control panel.
I tried running "WIndows Installer CleanUp Utility" as I read in a thread on this forum. This did not help. After going thru and removing all SQLServer programs using the "programs and features" icon in control panel... The installation process shows two installed instances of SQLServer 2005.
1) How can I completely erase all Vista Ultimate's knowledge of any SQLServer 2005 install and start over?
I have downloaded SQLServer 2005 SP 2, and run it, but clearly what I should do, and what Microsoft has asked me to do are not working...
2) What should I be doing to install SQLServer 2005 Developer Edition successfully?
I have been a strong supporter of Microsoft, but this is getting me very frustrated.
Please help,
- Chaz

Hi
I am new to this sql server thing. And for last couple of days i m trying to figure out whether we can install sql server 2000 ent edition in a server after installing or upgrading sql server 2005 from (sql server 2000) . As sql server 2005 is know to exist side by side with earlier sql server versions .
And coming to the problem which i m facing is , I have installed sql server 2005 ent in windows 2000 server in which sql server 2000 is residing.Later when i observerd i realised that actually i have upgraded 2000 to sql 2005 server (which i hav done after consulting many people). As a result few of the client systems which were running sql server personal edition were unable to access their data from the database. For temporary relief i have installed sql server 2005 express edition plus management studio in the client systems . The doubts which i am having are
1) what happens if i uninstall sql server 2005
2) Is it possible to install sql server 2000 ent edition now to work along with sql server 2005
thanks in advance .....waiting for your quick replies ..any idea's

Hi Guys,
Do any one has a step by step instructions for installing the service pack 2 and 3 on Active/Passive cluster. I installed sqlserver 7.0 in one active/ passive cluster and it worked successfully. Now I followed the instructions as given by microsoft by running the cluster wizard. It removed the virtual server. I made all sqlservr services offline.
When I try installing I couldn't able to install as it is saying "Active virtual server is there run clustered wizard in all the nodes". Now I am in the middle of no where.
Please help me asap.
Thanks in advance,
Anu

Hi experts;
I have a problem with unicode character 0x2300
I created this table
create table testunicode (Bez nchar(128))
Insert Data
insert into testunicode (Bez)values('Œ€„¢')
with 2 Unicode characters
Œ€ = 0x2300
„¢ = 0x2122
Selecting the data
select Bez from testunicode
I see
"?„¢"
„¢ = 0x2122 is ok but instead of 0x2300 there is 0x3f
When I modify the insert statement like that ( 8960 = 0x2300 )
insert into testunicode (Bez)values(NCHAR(8960)+'„¢')
and select again voila i see
"Œ€„¢"
Does anyone have an idea?
Thanks

I am trying to 'load' a copy of a SQLServer 2000 database to SQLServer 2005 Express (on another host). The copy was provided by someone else - it came to me as a MDF file only, no LDF file.
I have tried to Attach the database and it fails with a failure to load the LDF. Is there any way to bypass this issue without the LDF or do I have to have that?
The provider of the database says I can create a new database and just point to the MDF as the data source but I can't seem to find a way to do that? I am using SQL Server Management Studio Express.
Thanks!!

I have an app that uses a sqlserver 2000 jdbc driver to connect to a sqlserver 2000.
Is it possible to do a direct replacement of sqlserver 2000 with sqlserver 2005 express just by reconfiguring the app to point to the express? The app would still be using the sqlserver 2000 jdbc driver to try and make the connection.
If that is a possibility, what can be some differences in the configuration? Previously with 2000 the config information I entered is:
server name: "machinename"( or ip). I've also tried "machiname/SQLEXPRESS"
DB name: name of db instance
port: 1433(default)
user and pass.
My attempts so far results in
"java.sql.SQLException: [Microsoft][SQLServer 2000 Driver for JDBC]Error establishing socket."
and
"java.sql.SQLException: [Microsoft][SQLServer 2000 Driver for JDBC]Unable to connect. Invalid URL."

I have an SQLServer Mobile database, and I would like to know if there is a way to upgrade it to SQLServer 2005 (.mdf) database. My database has no records in it, just the structure (tables etc). What I am actually asking is if I can create automatically a new SQLServer 2005 Database with the same structure as my existin SQLSErver Mobile database

I am having problems with stack dumps (as many as 12 a day) at a production site running NT 4.0 SP4 with Sql Server 6.5 SP5A. I've tried running every diagnostic utility on the server but it shows no problems. Before I open a ticket with Microsoft on the stack dumps, I'd like to upgrade the server to NT Service Pack 6A. My question is, do I need to re-install SqlServer SP5A? Will the NT Service Pack 6A invalidate SQL SP5A?
TIA,
Mike

I seem to have gotten myself between a rock and a hard place. I have tried everything I know and am sending this post as a last resort before wiping my computer drive and re-installing everything. This would not be the end of the world. All the software on my computer is registered and legal and all that, but getting things set up again is not something I look forward to. Here's the situation .....
I have been trying out SQL Server 2005 Express on a test server and have worked out all kinds of good things, including working remotely, over our network, from my computer. We decided to get the full version (SQL Server 2005 Standard) before going any further so that I could have all the cool tools and stuff. We got the full version installed on a new server
and I have been working on it using SQL Server Management Studio Express to get things started. Yesterday I decided I was ready to start going thru the tutorials for SSIS and SSAS, so I uninstalled the Express version of Management Studio and all other segments of Express that were on my local computer, got out the Standard version CDs and installed the workgroups segment on my computer. After several false-starts (re having to load things like IIS and reload .NET framework and then restart the SQL Server installation) I thought I finally made it all the way thru. During this last time thru a message popped up about not enough virtual memory, but the installation continued - so I left it going. When the "finish" screen came up and I clicked "finish", I first went to Surface Config and set things up as I had them before, then tried going to Managment Studio, but it was not in the programs list. I went back to Config. Manager and tried to see if something just needed to be turned on, or whatever, and started getting application failure errors, with a message to look at the install log. In that log there is a message about installation failure due to memory shortage. I should not be getting this problem, as far as I can tell. My hard drive has 24 gigs free and I have 1 gig of ram. In any case, I tried un-installing (thru add/remove programs) and when I do I get a failure error there too. Finally, I tried running the install again, figuring - as I have experienced on other software - that sometimes the second time thru straightens things out. No such luck, and another try at un-install gave the same results. I realize I am being somewhat vague about the error messages. I can get them if I need to, but I thought I would just toss this situation out to you all first, since it may not matter exactly what the failure messages are! Any suggestions?
Thanks a billion!

Hi, I'm after some advice.
I have a server containing two mirrored HD's connected to a SAN.
I have to install SQL Server 2005 onto this server, I intend to put all data/log files on the disks that are in the SAN but my question is: where is the best place to install SQLServer itself, the local disk (ie. C:) or disks within the SAN?
Thanks
