How Many Open Connections Does SQL Server 2005 Express Allow To .mdf File

May 17, 2007

Hi Guys, how many connections does sql 2005 express allow to .mdf file. I stumpled on info on a microsoft site (actually a forum post on msdn) that sql server express allows only a single connection to an .mdf file.
Iam intrested in this because i developed reporting services reports in BIS and iam having problems. If i run a report from report manager, i have to wait for close to 20 minutes before i can be able to run my asp.net application agian. Else if i insert data or retrieve data from my asp.net application, then i have to wait again for 20 minutes or more before i can be able to run my reports else i will get an error that a connection can not be made to the database or that the database is being used by another process.
So in all cases, i have to wait for 20--30 minutes before a connection can be made to the .mdf file. i.e after running a report or after inserting or retrieving data from the database through my asp.net application.
Iam using sql sever 2005 express with advanced services and visual web developer on windows server 2003.
Any ideas or help.

How To Apply SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 To The Version Of SQL Server 2005 Express Which Installs With Visual Studio 2005?

Aug 8, 2006

When I installed VS 2005, it installed the default version of SQL Server 2005 Express that ships with Visual Studio 2005 installer media.

How can apply SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 to update this existing instance?

Currently, if I run this query:

SELECT @@version

I get the following:

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.1399.06 (Intel X86) Oct 14 2005 00:33:37 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Express Edition on Windows NT 5.1 (Build 2600: Service Pack 2)

After applying SP1, I should get 9.00.2047.00.

Should I just go to this link and download & install the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP1:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/download/

Thank you,

Bashman

Edited Data Won't Propagate Back To The Database (VB 2005 Express && SQL Server 2005 Express)

Dec 11, 2006

Hi,

I'm trying to learn some VB programming with the VB 2005 Express Absolute Beginner Series video tutorials (which I think is great) and have come across a problem that I can't solve.

When I follow the instructions in Lesson 9 (Databinding Data to User Interface Controls) my application will display the data from the database correctly and I can edit it (and as long as the debugger is running the data remains changed). However, the changes won't propagate back to the database. I don't get any error messages but after I edit the data, save (with the save button on the BindingNavigator toolbar), and end debugging the data in my database remains unchanged. When I use a MessageBox to show how many rows where edited/updated in the

Me.myTableTableAdapter.Update(Me.myDatabaseDataSet.myTable)

I get the correct number back. I'm sure the problem is not due to coding errors since I've also tried running the accompanying Lesson 9 project file that can be downloaded from MSDN and the problem persists.

I'm using Windows XP SP2, SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and VB 2005 Express Edition. I've tried installing SQL Server 2005 Express with a number of different settings, including default settings, but it doesn't make any difference.

Would greatly appreciate any feedback on this as I'm keen to resolve this problem so I can get on with the next tutorial lesson.

Thanks,
Ieyasu

Can someone please tell me where I can find more detailed information on available providers for sql express?

Help With Converting Code: VB Code In SQL Server 2000-&&>Visual Studio BI 2005

Jul 27, 2006

Hi all--I'm trying to convert a function which I inherited from a SQL Server 2000 DTS package to something usable in an SSIS package in SQL Server 2005. Given the original code here:
Function Main()
on error resume next
dim cn, i, rs, sSQL
Set cn = CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
cn.Open "Provider=sqloledb;Server=<server_name>;Database=<db_name>;User ID=<sysadmin_user>;Password=<password>"
set rs = CreateObject("ADODB.Recordset")
set rs = DTSGlobalVariables("SQLstring").value

for i = 1 to rs.RecordCount
sSQL = rs.Fields(0).value
cn.Execute sSQL, , 128 'adExecuteNoRecords option for faster execution
rs.MoveNext
Next

Main = DTSTaskExecResult_Success

End Function

This code was originally programmed in the SQL Server ActiveX Task type in a DTS package designed to take an open-ended number of SQL statements generated by another task as input, then execute each SQL statement sequentially. Upon this code's success, move on to the next step. (Of course, there was no additional documentation with this code. :-)

Based on other postings, I attempted to push this code into a Visual Studio BI 2005 Script Task with the following change:

public Sub Main()

...

Dts.TaskResult = Dts.Results.Success

End Class

I get the following error when I attempt to compile this:

Error 30209: Option Strict On requires all variable declarations to have an 'As' clause.

I am new to Visual Basic, so I'm on a learning curve here. From what I know of this script:
- The variables here violate the new Option Strict On requirement in VS 2005 to declare what type of object your variable is supposed to use.

- I need to explicitly declare each object, unless I turn off the Option Strict On (which didn't seem recommended, based on what I read).

Given this statement:

dim cn, i, rs, sSQL

I'm looking at "i" as type Integer; rs and sSQL are open-ended arrays, but can't quite figure out how to read the code here:

Set cn = CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")

cn.Open "Provider=sqloledb;Server=<server_name>;Database=<db_name>;User ID=<sysadmin_user>;Password=<password>"

set rs = CreateObject("ADODB.Recordset")

This code seems to create an instance of a COM component, then pass provider information and create the recordset being passed in by the previous task, but am not sure whether this syntax is correct for VS 2005 or what data type declaration to make here. Any ideas/help on how to rewrite this code would be greatly appreciated!

avg3 = (abs(Dupl + QA)) / 2,

RPD1 = (abs(Prim - Dupl) / abs(Prim + Dupl)) * 2,

RPD3 = (abs(Dupl - QA) / abs(Dupl + QA)) * 2

FROM PivotedLabTests

GO

===========================================
How can I execute this set of the CTE.sql code in the VB 2005 Express via the Stored Procedure programming?

Please help and respond.

Finding SQL 2005 Standard Edition Code Which Will Break In Express

We're currently developing an application against SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition. Recently, we've started to consider deploying certain installations against SQL Server Express. We're particularly worried about some stored procedures we've written taking advantages of features which will not be available in SQL Server Express, is there a simple compliance tool or such that we can scan our existing tables/functions/stored procedures/etc with to identify potential pitfalls when running on SQL Server Express?

SQL 2005 Server (SP2) To SQL 2005 Express (SP2) Replication Looping/Excessive Repl Times

Sep 25, 2007

We have a large number of clients attempting to replicate two publications on 2005 Express databases (2 publications subscribed to the one subscriber database) with our 2005 Server (9.00.3042.00 SP2 Standard Edition) and experiencing two significant problems:

1) Users experience the following message:

The Merge Agent failed after detecting that retention-based metadata cleanup has deleted metadata at the Subscriber for changes not yet sent to the Publisher. You must reinitialize the subscription (without upload).

This problem should not apparently occur with SQL Server 2005 (or 2005 Express) instances with SP2 applied. All clients experiencing this problem have SP2 installed as does our Server and the retention period is 30 days. The subscribers have been replicating well under that.

2) Replications never succeed after appearing to replicate/loop around for hours

This issue is the most critical as we have clients who have been installed and re-installed with new instances of SQL Server 2005 Express, new empty databases (on subscriber before snapshot extraction), and using fresh snapshots (less than an few hours old) which cannot successfully replicate.

Interestingly there is at least 1 instance where several computers are subscribed and successfully replicating the same database as another where replication refuses to succeed.

To test we have taken a republished database from another 2005 Server which is working fine and restored it to the same server as the one holding the database with which we are experiencing problems and subscribed to it. This test worked fine and replication of both publications went through fast and repeatedly without showing any signs of problem.

This indicates that the problem is perhaps data related as it appears localised to that database.

Below are two screenshots which may assist.

Screenshot 1 Shows that on the server side the replication attempts look like they are succeeding despite the fact that the subscriber end does not indicate success. Also the history indicates the the subscription has spent all it's time initialising and not merging any changes.

Screenshot 2 Shows a rogue process which has appears on many of the problem child subscribers. It shows a process running with no end time even though the job indicates failure in the message and even though other replication attempts appear to have succeeded after it. This process stays in the history showing that it is running even when I can find no corresponding process for it.

Can anyone suggest a further course of action/further testing/further information required which may assist?

This is extremely urgent and any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Scott

Visual Studio 2005 Unable To Connect To SQL Server Express 2005

May 26, 2008

Hi,
I have VS Pro 2005 and SQL Server Express 2005 installed on an XP Pro machine. When using VS 2005, in the 'Server Explorer' window I can see and attach to two SQL Server databases that I have set-up. But if I attempt to access the same databases from withn the 'Solution Explorer' window I get the following dialog box message,

"
Required Component Missing (Dialog box heading)

Connections to SQL Server Files (*.mdf) require SQL Server Express to function properly. Please verify the installation of the component or download from the URL: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=49251
"

I have uninstalled and then reinstalled both VS 2005 and SQL Server Express twice but it has helped.

I don't understand why I'm getting this error because all of the server configuration tools and connection utilities seem to work fine but VS say's that SQL Server Express is not installed.

Thanks,

CLN

P.S.
I had another application that required MSDE 2000A to be installed. When I removed the other application I also removed MSDE 2000A and that's when the problem began.

Upgrade From SQL Express 2005 Report Server With Advanced Services To SQL 2005 Standard Fails

Feb 25, 2008

I am trying to upgrade SQL Server Express 2005 Report Server to SQL 2005 Standard and it fails with the following error:

SQL Server Setup did not have the administrator permissions required to copy a file: C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.8Reporting ServicesReportServer
ssrvpolicy.config. To continue, verify that the file exists, and either grant administrator permissions to the account currently running Setup or log in with an administrator account. Then run SQL Server Setup again.

After I click OK on the message, this whole path where the upgrade is bieng installed dissapears C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.8Reporting Services. The error is a bit missleading because the file that it is trying to copy rssrvpolicy.config does appear in that upgrade folder so I am not sure why it would try to copy a file that has already been copied.

I was able to upgrade the Database Engine instance fine but can't upgrade Reporting Services due to that error. I have verified that the account that ran the setup had the administrator permissions. Your prompt reply to my question would be greatly appreciatted.

The program shortcut "Visual Studio 2005 Command Prompt" seems to be mising from the "Visual Studio 2005 Command Prompt" Start menu added by the current Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Toolkit. Where is it? How to workaround?

Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, point to Visual Studio Tools, and then click Visual Studio 2005 Command Prompt." but I can find no such command prompt within "Visual Studio Tools", only "Visual Studio 2005 Remote Debugger{, Configuration Wizard}".

What's wrong? How to fix or workaround? I'd install .NET SDK 2.0 to get it's Command Prompt but that's about 570MB merely for a command prompt!

SQL Server 2005 Express And Visual Studio 2005 Standard

Jul 9, 2006

Hi everyone,I am trying to connect to SQL Server 2005 Express with Advanced Services from Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition.  I have SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition but it took up so much space and resources on my computer that I didn't want to put it back on there.  So I put the SQL Express on there and while the Management Studio application connects just fine, VS 2005 will not.  Oddly enough, VS 2005 connected just fine to SQL 2005 Standard.  I have enabled shared memory, named pipes and TCP/IP.  I have set up SQL Express to accept remote connections on named pipes and TCP/IP.  And I have tried running SQL Express as the Local System Account, as a Local Service and as a Network Service.  Nothing.  I have tried feeding the Server Name is the Data Connections dialog in Visual Studio my SQL Express instance as (local)/SQLEXPRESS, localhost/SQLEXPRESS, and {computername}/SQLEXPRESS where {computername} is the name of my local computer which SQL Express is (allegedly) running on.  And I cannot get the list of databases on that server.There is probably something very simple that I have left out.  Can anyone see what it is?Thanks!

I had SQL Server Express Edition installed. I then uninstalled both it and Visual C#. I then installed SQL Server 2005 Developer's Edition and reinstalled Visual C# -- both on the same machine. I can connect to SQL Server 2005 using SQL Server Management Studio. However, Visual C# is a different story. When I try to add a new Data Connection, it defaults the data source to .SQLEXPRESS, which is no longer on my machine. I can select .MSSQLSERVER, but when I click on either OK or Test Connection, I time out with an error message -- error 25 - Connection string is not valid. The connection string that is shown at the bottom of the Advanced dialog box is -- Data Source=.MSSQLSERVER;AttachDbFilename=E:InventoryDataInventory_Data.MDF;Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True

SQL Server 2005 Express Edition 2005 - Update Fails

Mar 26, 2008

HI, My computer keeps trying to download SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2 and fails with the error code 0x2B22. It is a new computer running with Windows XP Pro.

I have spent hours searching the forums and the internet, but I can't find anything to help, or I don't understand the solutions or whether they relate to my computer. I don't know how to find out why the update is failing either.

Please can someone help!!

Thank you!
