Capture Returned Value From Exec(@Build) Into Another Variable

Jul 23, 2005

I am building a SQL statement that returns a number.
when I execute the Built SQL statment EXEC(@Build). What I need to do
now is take that number that comes back and store it in another
variable so I can do some conditional logic. Any ideas? See SQL below.

Something like @Count=Exec(@Build) which I know doesnt work.

Thanks,
Phil

Can The Result From An EXEC(@sqlcommand) Be Returned To A Variable

Apr 11, 1999

Is it possible to get the result from an EXEC(@sqlcommand) statement into a variable?

As part of a SQL loop, it is necessary for me to run an EXEC() command to process an SQL statement. I have succesfully implemented this, but have been unable to get the results from the EXEC() statement into a variable to allow this data to be inserted into a table. Is this possible?

For Example (I know this doesn't work, but it is effectively what I am trying to achieve):

select @result = EXEC(@sqlcommand)

I could then use the @result variable in an insert statement to update a table with the results from the EXEC command.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated...

Wayne

Exec SQL Task: Capture Return Code Of Stored Proc Not Working

May 19, 2006

I am just trying to capture the return code from a stored proc as follows and if I get a 1 I want the SQL Task to follow a failure(red) constrainst workflow and send a SMTP mail task warning the customer. How do I achieve the Exec SQL Task portion of this, i get a strange error message [Execute SQL Task] Error: There is an invalid number of result bindings returned for the ResultSetType: "ResultSetType_SingleRow".

Using OLEDB connection, I utilize SQL: EXEC ? = dbo.CheckCatLog

EXEC SQL Task Editer settings:
RESULTSET: Single Row
PARAMETER MAPPING: User::giBatchID
DIRECTION: OUTPUT
DATATYPE: LONG
PARAMETER NAME: 0

PS-Not sure if I need my variable giBatchID which is an INT32 but I thought it is a good idea to feed the output into here just in case there is no way that the EXEC SQL TASK can chose the failure constrainst workflow if I get a 1 returned or success constraint workflow if I get a 0 returned from stored proceedure

CREATE PROCEDURE CheckCatLog
@OutSuccess INT
AS

-- SET NOCOUNT ON added to prevent extra result sets from
-- interfering with SELECT statements.
SET NOCOUNT ON
DECLARE @RowCountCAT INT
DECLARE @RowCountLOG INT

---these totals should match
SELECT @RowCountCAT = (SELECT Count(*) FROM mydb_Staging.dbo.S_CAT)
SELECT @RowCountLOG = (SELECT Count(*) FROM mydb_Staging.dbo.S_LOG)
--PRINT @RowCountCAT
--PRINT @RowCountLOG
BEGIN
IF @RowCountCAT <> @RowCountLOG
--PRINT 'Volume of jobs from the CAT file does not match volume of jobs from the LOG file'
--RETURN 1
SET @OutSuccess = 1

Possible?: Count(*) Returned By EXEC

Jul 23, 2005

Hi all,I have a stored procdure which does a select and returns the recordsdirectly -i.e. Not in output parameters e.g:CREATE PROCEDURE up_SelectRecs(@ProductName nvarchar(30)) ASSELECT *FROM MyTableWHERE [Name]=@ProductNameIn another stored procedure I need to do the following:SELECT COUNT(*)FROM MyTableWHERE [Name]=@ProductNameAs the select queries are actually a lot more complex that this, I'drather not duplicate the select code in 2 sp's to save the maintenanceeffort - I'm looking for a way to execute the first procedure from thesecond and just count the records returned - something like:SELECT Count(*)FROM EXEC up_SelectRecs @ProductNameAny way to achieve this? Thanks all--James

what I thought is to create a trigger on each table I want to log its bcp. then declare a variable and assign the duration of bcp .. But I did not know where to pull that value..... Dose anyone knows how to capture the duration of bcp for a table....

However, I want the package to continue to run.

Is there away of assigning the error message given to an expression and then using the expression in the precedence contraint?

Can't TABLE Variable Be Used In EXEC Statement In Stored Procedure

Feb 8, 2008

Hi

I've used a temporary table in the stored procedure

I've created it as DECLARE @Temp TABLE (id INT)

in select clause I've used this temp table through the joins..

But I've also used a varchar variable to store my criteria...

which I'm building in the stored procedure

so inorder to use it in the where clause I used

EXEC ('SELECT ....................

FROM @Temp T

LEFT OUTER JOIN ...
LEFT OUTER JOIN ...
WHERE ' + @Criteria )

Unfortunately this is not working.
Giving the errror

Must declare the variable '@TempT'.

I had to use Temporary table using #, which I feel is really waste of memory...

Is there a way by which I can use my Table variable in the EXEC statement.

Thanks In advance

How Do I Use A @variable To Hold On Value Return From An Exec ('string Command') Statement.

exec (@cmd)

How can I use @OldID to hold on UID return from this statement.

When I try use:
select @cmd = 'select @OldID = uid from ' + ltrim(rtrim(@db))'..sysusers where name = ' + "'" + ltrim(rtrim(@OldOwner)) + "'"
then I'm getting a error message: @OldID not declare.

Stored Procedure Using A Declared Variable In Insert Query (inline Or Using EXEC)

May 14, 2008

Hello,

I have a stored procedure where I run an insert statement. I want to knwo if it is possible to do it using a variable for the table name (either in-line or with an EXEC statement without building a string first and executing that string. See examples of what I am talking about in both cases below:

I want to be able to do this (with or without the EXEC) :
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DECLARE @NewTableNameOut as varchar(100)

Set @NewTableNameOut = 'TableToInsertInto'

EXEC(
Insert Into @NewTableNameOut
Select * From tableToSelectFrom
)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I can not do the above because it says I need to declare/set the @NewTableNameOut variable (assuming it is only looking at this for the specific insert statement and not at the variable I set earlier in the stored procedure.

I can do it like this by creating a string with the variable built into the string and then executing the string but I want to know if I can do it like I have listed above.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DECLARE @NewTableNameOut as varchar(100)

Set @NewTableNameOut = 'TableToInsertInto'

EXEC(
'Insert Into ' + @NewTableNameOut + ' ' +
'Select * From tableToSelectFrom'
)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is not an issue for my simple example above but I have some rather large queries that I am building and I want to run as described above without having to build it into a string.

Is this possible at all?

If you need more info please let me know.

Error On Build Solution, If SSIS Project Is Part Of Build

Mar 22, 2006

Hello,

we have automated build on every night. In our solution is SSIS project, where each package is encrypted per password. We call build process per command line like this..

C:ProgrammeMicrosoft Visual Studio 8Common7IDEdevenv.exe (c:DevelopmentX3\X3.sln /build Release)' in 'c:DevelopmentProjectsDailyBuild

Through build process we get a error:

External Program Failed: C:ProgrammeMicrosoft Visual Studio 8Common7IDEdevenv.exe (return code was 1):

We think a reason is, that on build of SSIS project must be entered a password. You can wonder for what we need that SSIS packages are part of our build. We hope that on build process is also created Deployment Utility, if so set in dtproject.user. Is it so? Is there any way to create Deployment utility on automated build process? Can be a password provided pre command line?

with best regards

Data Returned From .WriteXML Is Different Than What Is Returned In Query Analyzer.

Jun 20, 2006

I have a strange problem. I have some code that executes a sql query. If I run the query in SQL server query analyzer, I get a set of data returned for me as expected. This is the query listed on lines 3 and 4. I just manually type it into query analyzer.
Yet when I run the same query in my code, the result set is slightly different because it is missing some data. I am confused as to what is going on here. Basically to examine the sql result set returned, I write it out to an XML file. (See line 16).
Why the data returned is different, I have no idea. Also writing it out to an XML file is the only way I can look at the data. Otherwise looking at it in the debugger is impossible, with the hundreds of tree nodes returned.
If someone is able to help me figure this out, I would appreciate it.

Event Capture

Jul 27, 1998

Hi,
We would like to capture events in our system. There seem to be
three obvious capture points for us - application, triggers, transaction
log. The latter seems to be the most attractive, since we`re looking
for a solution with minimal performance impact. In general, our
problem is similar to populating data warehouses from on-line databases.
Can anyone proffer some advice? In particular, being quite new to
SQL Server, I am not sure how difficult/possible it is to read the
transaction log in order to cull events. Some direction here would
be greatly appreciated.

Capture A Sql Command

I have this project that I need help with. There are 9 tables that I need to capture everything that happens to them (update, insert, delete). I was thinking of creating triggers. If someone does any of these actions against them then I need to insert into another table the date, the table name, the command that was run, and the records that are affected by it. Now I know how to do the date and table name, that's easy. My question is how do I capture the command. Once I have the command I can get the records affected.

If anyone knows how to do this, please help.
