Capture System.IO Rows From Incoming File And Insert Into Table

Mar 24, 2006

Ok, I'm not quite sure how to approach this one.  This is a VB.NET console app in which I want to capture each row and throw it into a table.  The reason being, they want a report on what was processed...which I'll be able to do easily in Reporting Services 2005 once this crap is in a table where it should be.

1) What should I use to do this, dataset?  I want to use stored procedures also, not inline SQL

Function here takes an incoming file, and splits it up into separate files.  I want to insert each row that is succesfully split

Public Sub ProcessFiles(ByVal sIncomingfile As String, ByVal sOutputDirectory As String)

        If sIncomingfile <> "" And sOutputDirectory <> "" Then

            Dim f As New Security.Permissions.FileIOPermission(Security.Permissions.PermissionState.None)
            f.AllLocalFiles = Security.Permissions.FileIOPermissionAccess.Read

            Dim file As New IO.FileInfo(sIncomingfile)
Dim filefs As IO.FileStream = Nothing
            If file.Exists Then
                Try
                    filefs = New IO.FileStream(file.FullName, IO.FileMode.Open)  'Place: 1
                Catch ex As Exception
SendEmail("Incoming .mnt or .naf Filename Invalid or not found", "Place: 1")
                    Application.Exit()
                End Try
            End If

            Dim reader As New IO.StreamReader(filefs)
Dim counter As Integer = 0

            Dim CurrentFS As IO.FileStream
            Dim CurrentWriter As IO.StreamWriter
Dim extension As String = IO.Path.GetExtension(file.FullName)

            If extension = ".mnt" Then
                While Not reader.Peek < 0
Dim Line As String = reader.ReadLine
                    If IsNumeric(Line.Substring(0, 1)) Then
Dim Parts() As String = Line.Split(" "c) ' split row into parts
If Parts(0).Length = 8 Then ' if first part is 8 then know we hit another header so cut and then write to file
                            counter += 1
If Not CurrentWriter Is Nothing Then CurrentWriter.Flush() : CurrentWriter.Close()
                            CurrentFS = New IO.FileStream(IO.Path.Combine(IO.Path.GetDirectoryName(sOutputDirectory), Line.Substring(59, 4) & "[" & counter.ToString & "]" & Now.ToString("MM-dd-yyyy") & IO.Path.GetExtension(file.FullName)), IO.FileMode.Create)
                            CurrentWriter = New IO.StreamWriter(CurrentFS)
                        End If

If Not CurrentWriter Is Nothing Then
                            CurrentWriter.WriteLine(Line)
                        End If

                    End If
                End While

If Not CurrentWriter Is Nothing Then CurrentWriter.Flush() : CurrentWriter.Close()

                MoveFilesFTP(sOutputDirectory, "mnt")

            ElseIf extension = ".naf" Then
                While Not reader.Peek < 0
Dim Line As String = reader.ReadLine
If Not IsNumeric(Line.Substring(0, 1)) Then ' if first part is not a number, then we know it's a header so split the file
                        counter += 1
If Not CurrentWriter Is Nothing Then CurrentWriter.Flush() : CurrentWriter.Close()
                        CurrentFS = New IO.FileStream(IO.Path.Combine(IO.Path.GetDirectoryName(sOutputDirectory), Line.Substring(6, 4) & "[" & counter.ToString & "]" & Now.ToString("MM-dd-yyyy") & IO.Path.GetExtension(file.FullName)), IO.FileMode.Create)
                        CurrentWriter = New IO.StreamWriter(CurrentFS)
                    End If

If Not CurrentWriter Is Nothing Then
                        CurrentWriter.WriteLine(Line)
                    End If

                End While

If Not CurrentWriter Is Nothing Then CurrentWriter.Flush() : CurrentWriter.Close()

                MoveFilesFTP(sOutputDirectory, "naf")
            End If
        Else
            'input file not valid
SendEmail("Incoming .mnt or .naf Filename Invalid", "Place: 1")
        End If

Transact SQL :: How To Bulk Insert Rows From Text File Into A Wide Table Which Has 1400 Columns

Feb 3, 2010

we can easily load a file into db tables. However, my main concern here is the number of columns in the file. A text file TEXT_1400.txt has 1400 columns. I am unable to load data to my db table using BCP or BULK INSERT commands, as maximum of 1024 columns are allowed per table in SQL Server 2008.

We can still go ahead and create ‘Wide Table’ (a special table that holds up to 30,000 columns.  The maximum size of a wide table row is 8,019 bytes.). But when operating on wide table, BCP/BULK INSERT commands still fail. After few hours of scratching my head over BCP and BULK INSERT, I observed that while inserting BCP/BULK INSERT commands are unable to identify SPARSE columns and skip these columns, which disturbs column mapping and results in data conversion and trancation errors.

Is there any proper way to load this kind of files into the db table?

SQL Server 2008 :: Update Incoming Rows Based On Percentage Calculation

Mar 13, 2015

I have below records coming in from source files

ProdName Amount TranType
P1 100 A
P1 100 S
P2 200 A
P2 205 S

In case the ProdName is same, and Amount = or (within +/- 5%) of Amount, I have to update the TranType column as IN/OUT respectively as shown below in the tables.

I am okay with using 2 different tables if needed as in the records comes in one table and then i can reference that table to upload the values in another.

ProdName Amount TranType
P1 100 IN
P1 100 OUT
P2 200 IN
P2 205 OUT

The order of the records coming in can be different order, they need not be subsequent.

This is happening in SQl Server 2008.

Capture Data From Excel File And Load Into Staging Table - Annual Count

Jul 31, 2013

I am working on an HR project and I have one final component that I am stuck on.

I have an Excel File that is loaded into a folder every month.

I have built a package that captures the data from the excel file and loads it into a staging table (transforming a few bits of data).

I then combine it with another table in a view.

I have another package that loads that view into a Master table and I have added a Slowly Changing Dimension so that it only updates what has been changed. (it’s a table of all employees, positions, hire dates, term dates etc).

Our HR wants to have this data in a report (with charts and tables) and they wanted it to be in a familiar format. So I made a data connection with Excel loading the data into a series of pivot tables.

I have one final component that i cant seem to figure out. At the end of every year I need to capture a count of all Active Employees and all Termed employees for that year. Just a count.

So the data will look like this.

|Year|HistoricalHC|NumbTermedEmp|
|2010|447 |57 |
|2011|419 |67 |
|2012|420 |51 |

The data is in one table labeled [EEMaster]. To test the count I have the following.

SELECT COUNT([PersNo]) AS HistoricalHC
FROM [dbo].[EEMaster]
WHERE [ChangeStatus] = 'Current' AND [EmpStatusName] = 'Active'

this returns the HistoricalHC for 2013 as 418.

SELECT COUNT([PersNo]) AS NumbOfTermEE
FROM [dbo].[EEMaster]
WHERE [ChangeStatus] = 'Current' AND [EmpStatusName] = 'Withdrawn' AND [TermYear] = '2013'

This returns the Number of Termed employees for 2013 as 42.

I have created a table to report from called [dbo.TORateFY] that I have manually entered previous years data into.

|Year|HistoricalHC|NumbTermedEmp|
|2010|447 |57 |
|2011|419 |67 |
|2012|420 |51 |

I need a script (or possibly a couple of scripts) that will add the numbers every year with the year that the data came from.

(so on Dec 31st this package will run and add |2013|418|42| to the next row, and so on.

Insert Rows Into A Flat File

Sep 22, 2006

Hi!

I have a problem that I can´t understand.

I have rows in a table in a SQL Server 2005 that I want to send to a Flat file. When I am executing the task for the first time it is OK and works perfectly. But the problem is when I am trying to do it again. I seems like the path to the file and the filename dissappears after the first time and the execution failes with an error message that tells me that the file is invalid and don´t exists.

I don´t now why this is happening and it´s such an easy thing to do and I can´t make it work.

So please help me!

Johanna

How To Insert Rows To Table B Based On Values In Table A.

Mar 7, 2008

I need Insert rows in the OrderDetails Table based on values in the Orders Table

In the Orders table i have a columns called OrderID and ISale.
In the OrdersDetails i have columns called OrderID and SaleType

For each value in the OrderID Column of the Orders Table, anytime the ISale Column in the Orders table = 1, and the SalesType column in the OrderDetails table is empty, I want to add two rows in the OrderDetails table. One row with the value K and another row with the value KD.
That is a row will be added and the value in the SalesType column will be K, also a second row will be added and the value in the SalesType column will be KD

Also for each value in the OrderID Column of the Orders Table, anytime the ISale Column in the Orders table = 0, and the SalesType column in the OrderDetails table is empty, I want to add two rows in the OrderDetails table. One row with the value Q and another row with the value QD
That is a row will be added and the value in the SalesType column will be Q, also a second row will be added and the value in the SalesType column will be QD.

I need a SQL Script to accomplish this. thanks

SQL Server 2008 :: Insert Data Into Table Variable But Need To Insert 1 Or 2 Rows Depending On Data

Feb 26, 2015

I can retrieve all the source data i need easily but when i come to insert it into the table variable i need to insert 1 record if its a single part or 2 records if its a twin part. I know could use a cursor but im sure there has to be an easier way !

Below is the code i have at the moment

declare @enddate as datetime
declare @Line as Integer

File Archival System Table Design

Dec 13, 2007

I am preparing to design an application that will archive files created by another application. In my SQL database I want to store details about the file and then the file its self. Each file is about 500kb in size and there will be about 20,000 files generated per year.

My preference is to store these files in a blob field. It makes storage, linking to file meta data, backup etc easy for me. I have already solved the technical issues surrounding pulling the file in and out of a blob field.

By my calculations I will need a server with 10GB of disk space for each year of files archived which doesn't seem outlandish for table size.

I do not want to design my application however to find out a year from now that I should have been storing these files in a traditional file system because of (... whatever ...) and just linking them by path in the sql database.

I'm curious what users of this forum believe to be the best practices surrounding this type of database?

Compare Incoming Input File Row Values With Database Row Values In SSIS

Jan 23, 2008

Hi All,

I receive the input file with some 100 columns and some 20k+ rows and I want to check the incoming input row is existed in the database or not based on 2 key columns. If the row is existed then I need to check all the columns (nearly 100 columns) values in input and the database are equal or not. If both are equal I need to treat them seperately if not there is a seperate logic. How Can I do that check for each row and for each column?

Basically the algorithm is like this, if the input file row is not existed in the database then treat that as new row else if the input row is existed in the database then check all the columns are equal or not. If all the columns are equal then treat that as existing row and do nothing else if some columns are not equal then treat this row seperately.

I found some thing to achieve the above thing.
1. Take the input row and check in the database.
2. If the row is not found in the database then treat it as new row.
3. If row is found in the database then
a) Take the source row and prepare a concatenated string for all the columns
b) Take the database row and prepare a concatenated string for all the columns
c) Find out the hash code for the 2 strings and then compare hash codes for equal.

The disadvantage of this is running a loop 2*m*n times where m is the number of rows and n is the number of columns. It should be done 2 times for input file row and database row.

Can anybody suggest a good method to do this?

What does the function "GetHashCode" for InputBuffer in method "Public Overrides Sub Input0_ProcessInputRow(ByVal Row As Input0Buffer)" will do?
Will it generates hash code based on all the columns values?

Pls clarify.

Regards
Venkat.

Insert Multiple Rows Into SQL Table

Aug 31, 2004

I am trying to insert multiple rows into a table getting data from a web form.

I have 2 fields being passed from a web form to the below stored procedure
@FormBidlistID Sample Data --> 500
@CheckBoxListContractors Sample Data --> 124,125,145,154,156,

The below DELETE function is working great. However for some reason or another the INSERT INTO sql command is not putting seperating the string and adding rows to the database? I am not sure where the error is occuring.

In the end I need the data to go into the database columns like so

Table: BidlistContractors (2 Columns: BidlistID, ContractorID)

BidlistID ContractorID
500 124
500 125
500 145
500 154
500 156

Stored Procedure Code:

CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.UpdateBidlistContractors
@FormBidlistID int,
@CheckBoxListContractors varchar(3999)
AS
DELETE FROM BidlistContractors
WHERE BidlistID = @FormBidlistID
DECLARE @ContractorID nvarchar(10)
DECLARE @BidlistID nvarchar(10)
DECLARE @startPosition int
DECLARE @commaPosition int
SET @startPosition =1
SET @commaPosition = 0
WHILE (@startPosition < LEN(@ContractorID))
BEGIN
SET @commaPosition = CHARINDEX(' , ' , @ContractorID, @startPosition)
SET @ContractorID= SUBSTRING(@ContractorID, @startPosition, @commaPosition - @startPosition)
INSERT INTO BidlistContractors (BidlistID, ContractorID)
VALUES (@BidlistID, @ContractorID)
SET @startPosition = @startPosition + LEN(@ContractorID) + 1
END
GO

Where am I going wrong? Thank you in advance for any help.

Now I want to insert two components in the end of all components per main material in the table. These two new components are similar for all materials. How do I do this the best way?

Label3------EVO_311---------1-----
Label3------EVO_120---------2-----
Label3------EVO_081---------3-----

How To Insert New Rows To Master Table

I use Ftp to import a comma delim file.Problem:Day 1 file has 5 records. During the course of Day 1 ,users makechanges to a field in the five records.Day 2 has same 5 records as they were at the beginning of Day 1(withoutchanges made during Day 1) plus 1 new record.I need a statement that will only add the 1 new record to the mastertable and leave the other 5 fields alone.I have a composite key that prevents duplicate addition. My original idea was to have a master table(Day 1) and a dailytable(Day 2) and do some kind of join that would give we only therecords in Day 2 that do not appear in Day 1 using the Composite key. This has not worked.Any ideas?

Cannot Insert Rows Into Empty Table

Mar 3, 2008

When i try to insert new rows using SSIS into an emty table in my database, SSIS freezes. The same happens when i use a lookup on an empty table.

The only solution i have found is to manualy insert a row and remove it afterwards. When i have done this SSIS works without a glitch.

I start off by taking a script of a existing database and applying this script on a new database. So that i create an empty duplicate of my current database.

Any ideas why SSIS freezes? Do i have to initialize something first in my database? It is really annoying that i have to insert a row and delete a row into every table i want to use.

SQL Server 2012 :: Insert Rows In A Table

Jul 28, 2015

In a t-sql 2012 sql script, I have the following script, that only works for a few records since the value of TST.dbo.LockCombination.seq only contains the value or 1 in most cases. Basically for every join listed below, there should be 5 records where each record has a distinct seq value of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Thus my goal is to determine how to add the missing rows to the TST.dbo.LockCombination where there are no rows for seq values of between 2 to 5. I would like to know how to insert the missing rows and then do the following update statement. Thus can you show me the sql on how to add the rows for at least one of the missing sequence numbers?

UDATE LKC
SET LKC.combo = lockCombo2
FROM [LockerPopulation] A
JOIN TST.dbo.School SCH ON A.schoolnumber = SCH.type
JOIN TST.dbo.Locker LKR ON SCH.schoolID = LKR.schoolID AND A.lockerNumber = LKR.number
JOIN TST.dbo.Lock LK ON LKR.lockID = LK.lockID
JOIN TST.dbo.LockCombination LKC ON LK.lockID = LKC.lockID
WHERE LKC.seq = 2

A normal select statement looks like the following:

select * from TST.dbo.Locker LKR
JOIN TST.dbo.Lock LK ON LKR.lockID = LK.lockID
JOIN TST.dbo.LockCombination LKC ON LK.lockID = LKC.lockID
where LKR.number in (000,001,1237)

In case you need the ddl statements for the tables affected here are the ddl statements:

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[Locker](
[lockerID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT FOR REPLICATION NOT NULL,
[schoolID] [int] NOT NULL,
[number] [varchar](10) NOT NULL,
[serialNumber] [varchar](20) NULL,
[type] [varchar](3) NULL,
[locationID] [int] NULL,

Split String And Insert Into Table Rows

Apr 17, 2014

I have a string which is delimited by commas:

Green,Red,Blue,Orange,Black,White

I need to create a SQL statement to read the string, split it at the "," character, and insert it into individual rows. I also need to insert an ID (the same for all split values).

For instance:

INSERT INTO tbl_Temp (unique_id, ID, color) VALUES (1, 999, Green)
INSERT INTO tbl_Temp (unique_id, ID, color) VALUES (2, 999, Red)
INSERT INTO tbl_Temp (unique_id, ID, color) VALUES (3, 999, Blue)
etc...

I would like to be able to do this all in one statement so I don't have to break it out into individual SQL statements.

I dont want to have to manuallytype in 200 insert statements, so is there a better way to do this? Ithought about maybe exporting the data into a CSV file and using somesort of procedure to insert the records that way... Any advise?

Can't Insert Rows In Table With Identity Column

Dec 5, 2007

Hello, I have a problem. I am trying to pull data out of one system and bring it into a SQL Server database for faster retrieval. The original table does not have an identity column and has a composite primary key. The table I am inserting the data into matches the original table exactly except I have an Identity column that I need for the removal of duplicates. The task gets to the final commit and then fails telling me that it can't insert a NULL into an identity field. Why is it trying to insert a NULL, the field should be auto-populating. I did add the Identity field to the table after the SSIS package was already built, but I did go into the destination and fix the column mappings. For the Identity column I just selected the "skip" option or whatever it was. Why are the identities not being auto-inserted and why is SSIS throwing this error?

Can anyone help???

Thanks!

How To Force Deferred Update To Create Two Rows In Change Data Capture

Mar 23, 2015

I have located a bug in the functions cdc.fn_cdc_get_net_changes_<capture_instance> generated when you enable cdc on a table. This bug can be triggered if 2 rows are created in the _CT table having the same values for the __$start_lsn, __$seqval and the table's key column(s). From research on the internet I have found such rows can be created by a "deferred update": a single update statement in which a column that is part of a unique constraint is updated.

In order to report the bug with Microsoft I need to create a complete series of steps-to-reproduce. But even though the situation happens several times a day in our production environment, I have not yet been able to reproduce it in my test environment.I need a single update statement (plus maybe some steps in advance) that make that the log reader inserts 2 rows into the _CT table, one with __$operation = 1 (delete) and another with __$operation = 2 (insert) as opposed to the single row with __$operation = 4 that it inserts for a normal update. Below is the script I have so far to create a fresh database, enable cdc, create a test table, insert some data and update this data.

I would have liked the last update statement to be handled as a "deferred update". However in all of my tests the log reader just simply inserts a single row into the cdc.dbo_NETTEST_CT table.how to reproduce the situation where I get the 2 rows with __$operation 1 and 2 from a single update statement instead of the single row with __$operation = 4.

CREATE DATABASE [cdcnet]
CONTAINMENT = NONE
ON PRIMARY
( NAME = N'cdcnet', FILENAME = N'S:SQLDATAcdcnet.mdf' , SIZE = 4096KB , FILEGROWTH = 1024KB )
LOG ON
( NAME = N'cdcnet_log', FILENAME = N'T:SQLLOGcdcnet_log.ldf' , SIZE = 1024KB , FILEGROWTH = 10%)

SQL Server 2012 :: Insert Rows Into A Table Without Dropping It

Sep 23, 2014

I am finding it difficult to find an example that allows for insertion of additional rows into a table, without dropping the table I'm inserting into. Or inserting specific values. Like this example..

[URL] ....

I have 6 table I am formatting the data to conform to the final table as I'm inserting it into, but none of these examples gives me the example needed. I am using SQL 2012.

<code>
SELECT
CONVERT(VARCHAR(50),[FName]) + ' ' + CONVERT(VARCHAR(50),[LName]) AS [CustName]
,CAST('ALARMCOM' as nvarchar(8)) as VendorName
,CONVERT(VARCHAR(25),[CUSTOMER_CS_ACCOUNT_NUMBER]) AS [Cust_ID]
,CONVERT(VARCHAR(40),[Charge_Description])as [ChargeType]
,CASE

SQL 2012 :: Take Rows From A Table And Display INSERT STATEMENTS

Oct 13, 2015

There is a valuable script out there that will take the rows from a table and display INSERT STATEMENTS.

Good thing is this script converts the data to HEXADECIMAL ( or some other ) and we don't have to worry about dealing with apostrophies embedded in varchar fields.
