I am new to .NET, after many years with classic ASP I am struggling a little with something that I am sure is really easy to do.
Basically what I want to do, is execute an SQL statement, that will return a single value. I then need to store this value as a variable, so that I can pass it into another query later.
It seems easy to output the record, but how do I store it as a variable !!
This is my code to connect and run the SQL... all I need to do as retreive the value, and put it aganist a variable....

Table Variable And User Defined Types

However, it cannot be compiled coz of this error:
Error 2715: Column or parameter #1: Cannot find data type udt_PRNum.
This user-defined data type is created in a user database only.
I tried to created the user-defined type into BOTH tempdb and master but same error.
How can i resolove it?
Or it is impossible to use user-defined datatype for table variable?
In the past,
i use this method:
CREATE TABLE #PRNumList (
PRNum udt_PRNum
)
and cerate udt_PRNum in tempdb only could solve it.
But now i want to use table variable.
It seems NOT work for my situation.
Any idea?
Capturing Record Count For A Table In Oracle And Saving It In A Table In SQL Server
Jun 11, 2007I would like to find out how to capture record count for a table in oracle using SSIS and then writing that value in a SQL Server table.
I understand that I can use a variable to accomplish this task. Well first issue I run into is that what import statement do I need to use in the design script section of Script Task. I see that in many examples following statement is used for SQL Server databases:
Imports System.Data.SqlClient
Which Import statement I need to use to for Oracle database. I am using a OLE DB Connection.

Capturing Mysterious Truncation/deletion Of A Table
Feb 14, 2006I have a dts which creates a table which is utilized on my localintranet. The DTS runs without error and the table iscreated/populated/transfered to the appropriate db. Then it appearsthat there is an action on this table which truncates it. I have beenunable to determine the culprit. Can I create a trigger that willcapture truncation? I have tried to create a trigger to capture thisinformation but none that I attempt seem to work on capturing atruncation or a drop table and re-create.Any help would be greatly appreciated.MT.

I have a parameter which should take multiple values into it and pass that to the code that i use. For, this i created a parameter and temporarily for testing i am passing some values into it.Using a dynamic SQL i am converting multiple values into multiple records as rows into another variable (called @QUERY). My question is, how to insert the values from variable into a table (table variable or temp table or CTE).OR Is there any way to parse the multiple values into a table. like if we pass multiple values into a parameter. those should go into a table as rows.
User Defined Variable

Is there a way that I can create a user defined variable in my database? I have a fairly large chunk of xml that I would like to store in the database that can be updated by clients ( in rare cases ). I could use other mechinisms to allow access to it, but all other application related information is stored nicely in this one place, I hate to vary for this single piece.

In Parameter Mappins it has been defined. Then, I've gone to General->Sql Statement and allocated the following SQL Statement:

I am storing a date value in a user variable(Date) I fill with a SQL Task and then want to use the value in the sqlcommand I use in the Datareader Source. It won't let me use the @variablename in the sql command.
Can anyone help with some advice on how I can make this work?

Incrementing A User Variable In Data Flow Task

Hello All,
I have a user variable , say max_id, which retrieves the max id from a primary key column of a table.
now in Data Flow Task, I have a Derived Column where I am creating a new column which will have the values max_id + 1 for the first record, then max_id + 2 for the second record of the derived column and so on..
and then I am mapping this derived column with that primary key column of the table, so that the new id's are different than the old ones which are already in the table, so there wont be any primary key violation.
I cannot make that primary key column as an Identity column.
my question is how do I increment this max_id user variable everytime ?

Multiple Reads Of User Variable (Recordset Object) Failing
Mar 1, 2007I hope this is a simple question. I have a package-scope user variable which is populated using a Recordset Destination in a Data Flow task. I am attempting to read the variable multiple times from different Script Tasks. The first read works fine, however the second read, in the second Script Task, says that there are no rows.
Has anyone run across this before? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I get the error. "The OLE DB provider "MSDAORA" for linked server "...." does not contain the table "COUNTRY". The table either does not exist or the current user does not have permissions on that table."
The 'sp' user I am connecting is the owner of the table. What could be the problem ?

In the derived column transformation editor, I have a Derived column name called FileGroupID. I would like to pass in a value for this column from a variable that I have set earlier in the scope. Can someone let me know, how to write the expression that does that and where do I specifiy that expression. I am thinking its the expression field in the derived column transformation editor. My main question is how to actually write the expression, what is the syntax to pull the variable value? Thanks.

May 22, 2000Is there any way(other than Profiler) to capture a full SQL Query statment. I've used dbcc inputbuffer and the current activity screen, both return 255 characters. I'd like to capture the whole query. Thanks

Capturing Server Name?

I have what OUGHT to be a simple question...or so I think (which really hurts, mind you...)
I am writing a stored proc that will reside on several different databases and be used to write a row to a "wait table" that is used to control processing in the various databases...
Essentially, the stored proc already exists, and writes what is essentially a note (or process semaphore) that says "Hey, Process XYZ is waiting on the completion of process 123"
Problem is...process XYZ has the same name on a number of different servers, so I have to come up with a way to differentiate the process name that's waiting on a job on a single server (in other words, 5 or more XYZ's can be waiting on a single job on a single server in the network, and the wait table resides on that single server).
So...my thought (again, think pain) is that I will put a process name of "SERVER.XYZ" into the wait table.
The SP I will use to write the "waiting on" semaphore is a common one, so - long story short(er) I need a way to capture the name of the current server (like db_name(), only server_name() - or something like it).
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance...

Script Task User Defined Variable And Data Reader Source SQL Statement

Please can anyone tell me if or how I have to cross reference to a user defined variable from a script task in the SQL of a Data Reader Source?
The script task creates a variable for the last Sales Ledger Session. The SQL in the data reader source that updates the DW sales invoice lines file based upon those invoice lines where the session number is greater than the value from the script task.
The SQL command in the custom properties doesn't cross reference back to the variable.
If anyone can help or needs further detail to help please post a resonse.

Power Pivot :: Temp Table Or Table Variable In Query (not Stored Procedure)?
Jul 19, 2012I don't know if it's a local issue but I can't use temp table or table variable in a PP query (so not in a stored procedure).
Environment: W7 enterprise desktop 32 + Office 2012 32 + PowerPivot 2012 32
Simple example:
declare @tTable(col1 int)
insert into @tTable(col1) values (1)
select * from @tTable
Works perfectly in SQL Server Management Studio and the database connection is OK to as I may generate PP table using complex (or simple) queries without difficulty.
But when trying to get this same result in a PP table I get an error, idem when replacing table variable by a temporary table.
Message: OLE DB or ODBC error. .... The current operation was cancelled because another operation the the transaction failed.
Capturing ID When Executing An INSERT

This table of course has an automatically incrementing ID field, and I'd like to somehow have my INSERT statement return the value of that ID field so that I can automatically show the user the record they've added.

Jul 20, 2005I'm trying to add functionality to a VB 6 application allowingcustomer service to add a customer number to a new customer.Customers are added to the database by sales personnel, and aprospective customer may have multiple rows due to projected ordersfor multiple products. Customer numbers are assigned when a newcustomer makes their first order.I'm using a DataGrid connected to an ADO Data Control. The datacontrol is connected to a view in SQL Server using the 'distinct'directive (I know it's not updatable) to show only one line per newcustomer. What I wish to do is capture the update event (probablythrough the FieldChangeComplete routine of the data control), manuallyassign the newly entered customer number to all appropriate rows inthe database, and cancel the update event with no notifications.I'm having two problems:1. I can't capture the newly entered customer number. The Textproperty of the DataGrid returns the old value of the cell instead ofthe newly entered value. How do I get the edited value?2. Even though I set adStatus = adStatusCancel in theFieldChangeComplete routine, I get a Microsoft DataGrid Control dialogstating 'Operation was Canceled'. How do I avoid this notification?

Capturing Component Throughput

I've just been reading this thread by a guy asking about capturing the throughput of a dataflow. I suggested that there is no real notion of capturing throughput of a dataflow but I believe there IS a notion of capturing the throughput of a component or an execution tree.
I believe all the information that one would need to capture the throughput of a component (apart from the name of the component that is) is available in the OnPipelineRowsSent event. If there were a OnPipelineRowsSent eventhandler and the OnPipelineRowsSent event contained the name of the component then I think we would be able to capture the throughput of a component. So, some questions:
Why is there no eventhandler for the OnPipelineRowsSent event?
Can the name of the component be added to the information in the OnPipelineRowsSent event?
Following on from this... I once had a conversation here with Kirk Haselden about capturing pipeline throughput. He thought it was a good idea and suggested I raised a DCR for it which I did but that was in the old pre-Connect days and it seems as though that DCR (like SO many other things) didn't make it across to Connect. So, some more questions:
Can you find any Connect DCRs relating to capturing throughput? I've found this: https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=152162 that I raised 18 months ago but which hasn't even had a single comment from anyone at Microsoft.
Do you think that capturing throughput would be useful? I can foresee huge advantages by capturing this in the debugger. (Note that Informatica does this and has done for years. It has a very nice GUI that shows the throughput of each destination in the mapplet.)
I'd welcome any thoughts around this. Its a big ask and it fits in very nicely with my constant, nay INCESSENT, requests for debugging enhancements so maybe this is one for Darvey to have a read of???
