Capturing The Results From Exec Command

Apr 21, 2006

Hi,

I'm writing a small query where I have a dynamic table name and dynamic condition for the criteria. In order to execute this, I need Exec command.

exec(select count(*) from @dynamictable where condition = @dynamiccond)

But here I want to capture the count from the select statement. Could any of you help me capture the results from exec command?

Thanks

Capturing Execution Results

Nov 13, 2006

Hi All

When running an SSIS Package from BIDS, we get to see the "Progress" tab which explains us the progress of the SSIS Package. During production, is there any way to capture this log. I am interested in using this as a log file for each run of my SSIS package.

Thanks,

OLE DB Command Stage: Capturing Rejects

May 2, 2007

Hello group, I have a question regarding the OLE DB Command Stage. Currently, I am reviewing a Data Flow that runs in production. This Data Flow Inserts to the various dimension tables in our warehouse. For a particular dimension table, the flow is like this:

Read Source records for Product combinations
LookUp Product combinations against the current dimProduct table (cached in memory)
Rows not found are then subjected to another LookUp on the dimProduct table (not cached). This is to find any rows inserted during the current run
Rows not found are then Inserted to dimProduct using a Stored Procedure invoked by an OLE DB Command
Successful Inserts then continue on, Rejected Inserts should be captured to a Flat File on our server for review.

Apparently, this last step has never been successful at capturing Rejects. Obviously, we would want to review these records to find the reason for failure. We get an empty file.

Currently, in the Stored Procedure we are using logic like this:

IF @PRODUCTCOUNT <> 0

BEGIN

RAISERROR ('DUPLICATE PRODUCT!', 10, 1)

RETURN

END

Questions:

Is the RAISERROR command going to give us Output?
Can we implement the OUTPUT command in our Proc invocation?
I have not found any documentation that says the OLE DB Command Stage supports Error logging (Although columns are available to be added in the Input/Output columns tab??)
Should we be using another Stage to accomplish this?

Any thoughts are welcome, thanks for your time!

rg

IF @PRODUCTCOUNT <> 0

BEGIN

RAISERROR ('DUPLICATE PRODUCT!', 10, 1)

RETURN

END

DB Engine :: How To Add Execution Plan To Extended Events Results Also When Capturing Deadlock Event

Oct 24, 2015

We know we can use the event lock_deadlock and xml_deadlock_report to capture the deadlock info,  however I also want to capture the execution plans for all of the SPIDs in the deadlock graph,  how to output the execution plans to the extended events trace results either ? such as if there is an action for execution plan or workaround for it ?If there is no built in action for execution plan , may I know if we can add the customized info to the extended events results file also ? Such as when the deadlock related event happens , then we can run a query to get some info ,then added the info along with other info such as sql_text, dbname  etc  to the events trace results file either ? The reason is if we also know the execution plans when the deadlock happens, it is useful to turning the query based on the execution plans to reduce deadlock happening .

EXEC Command Problem In Sp

Jan 14, 2008

Hi all,

I'm using SQL Server 2K and *trying* to select a value from a table where
the column name is held in a variable. Is there any way to do this??

For example, if you have a table like:

create table #Test (
ind integer identity,
jan integer,
feb integer,
mar integer,
...
nov integer,
dec integer
)

I can get the value for March and assign it to a variable with a simple

select @Variable = mar from #Test where ind = 1

(I can do that bit! :>), but if the column name is also stored in a
variable, I can't seem to make the assignment.

I've tried:

exec('select @Variable = ' + @MonthName + ' from #test where ind = 1')

which gives a 'must declare variable' error

and

set @Variable = exec('select ' + @MonthName + ' from #test where ind = 1')

which give an 'error near exec' error.

and various permutations of the above.

Has anyone any ideas how to do this??

How can i get the value from exec clause to @variable ??

Many thanks,

EXEC @SQLString With Output Results

Jun 2, 2005

Hello, I have been working around this issue, but couldn't yet find any solution.I have a stored procedure that calls a method to do a certain repetitive work.In this function, I have a dynamic query, which means, that I am concatinating commands to the query depending on the input of the function.for example, there is an input for a function called "Id"Inside the function, if Id = 111I need to add " and ID <> 1" and if Id has another value I need to add " and ID = c.ID" something like that.Now, inside the function, I need to return a value by executing the above @SQLString as follows:EXEC @SQLStringWhen I need is something likeEXEC @SQLString, @Total OutputReturn (@Total)Are there any ideas ?regards

Wierd XML Results From 'Exec SQL Task

Sep 15, 2006

Hi All, we got a problem that I hope you guys can help us with.

We are trying to extract data from a SQL database in XML format to a variable (string) using an 'Execute SQL Task'

In the task we are using an ADO.NET connection to the database which is fine and via direct input we are using this query.

SELECT
title,
initials,
surname,
username,
gender,
emailaddress,
addressline1,
addressline2,
addressline3,
town,
postcode,
country,
emailcontact,
postalcontact,
telephone
FROM
CRMCustRecords
FOR XML path('customer'), root('CRMData'), ELEMENTS XSINIL

In SSMS this is fine and returns an ok (to my eyes anyway!) XML resultset.

<CRMData xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance">
<customer>
<title>xxx</title>
<initials>xxxxxxx</initials>
<surname>xxxxxx</surname>
<username>xxxxxx</username>
<gender>x</gender>
<emailaddress>xxxx@xxxxxxx.xx.xx</emailaddress>
<addressline1>xxxxx</addressline1>
<addressline2 xsi:nil="true" />
<addressline3 xsi:nil="true" />
<town>xxxx</town>
<postcode>xxxxxxxxx</postcode>
<country>xx</country>
<emailcontact>x</emailcontact>
<postalcontact>x</postalcontact>
<telephone>99999999999</telephone>
</customer>
<customer>
</CRMData>

However the SSIS task (running exactly the same query) is returning

<ROOT>
<CRMData xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance">
<customer>
<title>xxx</title>
<initials>xxxxxxx</initials>
<surname>xxxxx</surname>
<username>xxxxxxxx</username>
<gender>x</gender>
<emailaddress>xxxxx@xxxxxxxxxx.xx.xx</emailaddress>
<addressline1>xxxxxxxxxx</addressline1>
<addressline2 xsi:nil="true" />
<addressline3 xsi:nil="true" />
<town>xxxxx</town>
<postcode>xxxxxxxx</postcode>
<country>xx</country>
<emailcontact>x</emailcontact>
<postalcontact>x</postalcontact>
<telephone>9999999999</telephone>
</customer>
</CRMData>
</ROOT>

I setup the query as a stored procedure and changed the SSIS accordingly. Running the sp from within SSMS was fine but the task still returned the wierd results.

This is completely unexpected and giving us headaches. It doesn't even look like well-formed XML to my eyes and won't display in IE without showing problems! Where are the eroneous /'s and ROOT nodes coming from?

I can't imagine we are the only people to have run into this and I'm sure we aren't doing something quite right - just stuck as to what we're doing wrong.

Hopefully I've provided enough info. If not just ask.

Thanks for any and all input
Pat

Need To Pull A Select Few Results From INSERT EXEC

Aug 17, 2006

I'd *like* to execute a sProc within another sProc, because this other one (let's call it dataProc) will provide me with results I need that are calculated based off execing other procs within that proc itself.

I'd like to use this data in a new sProc (we'll call it newProc), but I don't need NEARly all of the columns. The dataProc returns 1 row with 42 columns. I need about 4-5 of those for my newProc.

The dataProc does not have any output variables, and I do not want to change the signature, because several pages/apps use this existing dataProc.

My question:
Is there a way to INSERT INTO table EXEC dataProc
*Without* making a temp table that takes in every single column the dataProc puts out?

Any help is much appreciated.. thanks!

Execute Stored Procedure (with Parameters) With An Exec Command

Feb 21, 2004

Hi everybody, I would like to know if it's possible to execute a stored procedure, passing it parameters, using not CommandType.StoredProcedure value of sqlcommand, but CommandType.Text.

I tried to use this:
sqlCmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text
sqlCmd.Parameters.Add(sqlPar)
sqlCmd.ExecuteNonQuery()

With this sql command:
"exec sp ..."

I wasn't able to make it to work, and I don't know if it's possible.

Another question:
if it's not possible, how can I pass a Null value to stored procedure?
This code:
sqlPar = new SqlParameter("@id", SqlDbType.Int)
sqlPar.Direction = ParameterDirection.Output
cmd.Parameters.Add(sqlPar)

sqlPar = new SqlParameter("@parent_id", DBNull)
cmd.Parameters.Add(sqlPar)

doesn't work, 'cause I get this error:
BC30684: 'DBNull' is a type and cannot be used as an expression.

How can I solve this?
Bye and thanks in advance.

P.S. I would prefer first method to call a stored procedure ('cause I could call it with 'exec sp null' sql command, solving the other problem), but obviusly if it's possible...=)

Sorry for grammatical mistakes.

How Do I Use A @variable To Hold On Value Return From An Exec (&#39;string Command&#39;) Statement.

Sep 19, 2000

How do I use a @variable to hold on value return from an exec ('string command') statement.

Example for:

declare @OldID int
declare @cmd varchar(255)
declare @db varchar(25)
declare @OldOwner varchar(25)

set @db = 'DBNAME'
set @OldOwner = 'USERNAME'

select @cmd = 'select uid from ' + ltrim(rtrim(@db))'..sysusers where name = ' + "'" + ltrim(rtrim(@OldOwner)) + "'"
exec (@cmd)

How can I use @OldID to hold on UID return from this statement.

When I try use:
select @cmd = 'select @OldID = uid from ' + ltrim(rtrim(@db))'..sysusers where name = ' + "'" + ltrim(rtrim(@OldOwner)) + "'"
then I'm getting a error message: @OldID not declare.

Thanks.

Transact SQL :: How To Store Result Of Exec Command Into Temp Table

Apr 7, 2013

I wanted to insert the result-set of a Exec(@sqlcommand) into a temp table. I can do that by using:

Insert into #temp
Exec(@sqlcommand)

For this to accomplish we need to define the table structure in advance. But am preparing a dynamic-sql command and storing that in variable @sqlcommand and the output changes for each query execution. So my question is how to insert/capture the result-set of Exec(@sqlcommand) into a temp table when we don't know the table structure.

Connection Is Busy With Results For Another Command

Aug 31, 2007

We are migrating our databases from MS Access to SQL Server 2005 and using the SQL Native Client ODBC driver.

We also use a reporting tool called Actuate. Some of our Actuate reports use multiple datastreams to build the report.

When I run an Actuate report having multiple datastreams I get the following error message from SQL Server:

Error generated by the connected data source. Connection is busy with results for another command.

Is there a configuration setting in SQL Server to enable processing of multiple result sets?

Thanks.

Error Connection Is Busy With Results For Another Command

May 18, 2007

I have looked at other threads regarding errors similar to this, but I think mine is a bit different.

I am using SQL2005 Standard Edition and my application is coded with C# using ADO.Net. OLEDB connection is used. The error occurs when the application has only one thread accessing the database. It does not happen consistently, so it is very puzzling.

I am wondering if anyone could offer any tip to diagnose this.

Thanks in advance!

SqlDataSource And SSMSE Returning Different Results For Same SELECT Command

Oct 2, 2007

Hi,
Hope you guys won't mind this rather newbie question.  I'm writing a simple blog page for my website and have created a SqlDataSource which queries the database for a list of blog post titles (from the web.Blog table) and the number of comments (from the web.BlogComments table).  The SqlDataSource control is:
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="sourceBlogArticles" ProviderName="System.Data.SqlClient" connectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:myDatabase %>" runat="server" SelectCommand="SELECT gb.blogID, gb.title, gb.description, gb.tags, gb.dateAdded, COUNT(gbc.blogID) AS noOfComments FROM web.Blog gb LEFT OUTER JOIN web.BlogComments gbc ON gb.blogID = gbc.blogID GROUP BY gb.blogID, gb.title, gb.description, gb.tags, gb.dateAdded ORDER BY gb.dateAdded"></asp:SqlDataSource>
This works perfectly well if each blog entry in the web.Blog table has associated comments in the web.BlogComments table.  However, if there are no comments yet defined in the web.BlogComments table for that blogID then no row is returned in ASP.Net (as checked with a GridView control or similar linked to the data source to view what I get)
 HOWEVER, I think the SELECT command IS correct: if I use the select command as a query in SQL Server Managment Studio Express, I do get the rows returned, with 0 for the number of comments which is what I would expect for that query:
blogID, title, description, tags, dateAdded, noOfComments
1, title 1, description for title 1, tag1, 2007-09-27 06:49:03.810, 32, title 2, description for title 2, tag2, 2007-09-27 06:49:37.513, 03, title 3, description for title3, tag3, 2007-10-02 18:21:30.467, 0
Can anyone help?  The result from the SSMSE query is what I want, yet when I use the very same SELECT statement in my SqlDataSource I don't get any rows returned if the BlogComment count is zero (in the above example I get only the first row).  Many thanks for any suggestions!

A Severe Error Occurred On The Current Command. The Results, If Any, Should Be Ignored

I got the above error executing a stored procedure from .Net app and I isolated the issue on the following sql statement inside the sp. I executed the statement manually inside the MSSQL Mgt Studio and got the same error as above. Here is the sql statement:

A Severe Error Occurred On The Current Command. The Results, If Any, Should Be Discarded.

Hi,

I am hosting my ASP.NET application on a Host and after some time I get this error
(Don't get it on my development machine):

A severe error occurred on the current command. The results, if any, should be discarded.

And then it says this on the same page:

Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: A severe error occurred on the current command. The results, if any, should be discarded.

An unhandled exception was generated during the execution of the current web request. Information regarding the origin and location of the exception can be identified using the exception stack trace below.

ASPNetPortal.Global.Application_BeginRequest(Object sender, EventArgs e)
System.Web.SyncEventExecutionStep.Execute() +60
System.Web.HttpApplication.ExecuteStep(IExecutionStep step, Boolean&amp; completedSynchronously)

I thought this is a problem with max pool size and I did it max pool size = 5000, now application runs ok for some time and then produces this error but some times this comes very soon.

As a solution, I have to copy my dll in bin directory again and application restarts and works properly but then after some time this happenes again.

Please let me know whats the problem.
I checked all of my SqlDataReaders and SqlConnections are closed properly.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Using MAX, Then Capturing All Except Max

Sep 26, 2005

I need to first capture the max version associated with a file name here is the meat

SELECT
fileName,
f.folderName,
masterID,
iterationId,
iterationNumber version
FROM
fileIteration fi
JOIN iteration i on (i.iterationID = fi.fileIterationID)
JOIN vw_folderFileLink fl on (fl.fileMasterID = i.masterID)
JOIN folder f on (f.folderID = fl.folderID)

WHERE
fileName LIKE '429020652.idw'
--GROUP BY masterID, fi.FileName, f.FolderName, fileName, i.iterationID
ORDER BY masterID, version DESC
--*******end code ********--

that returns these results:

429020652.idwSubPumps71575217
429020652.idwSubPumps71575116
429020652.idwSubPumps71574975
429020652.idwSubPumps71574654
429020652.idwSubPumps71573983
429020652.idwSubPumps71573142
429020652.idwSubPumps71573131

First I need help just getting that top row but then I need to get all expect the top row selected.. I've tryed using MAX in several ways but I'm not getting what i want here :/ any help is appreciated

Capturing A Variable In ASP.NET

Aug 12, 2004

Hi all,

I am new to .NET, after many years with classic ASP I am struggling a little with something that I am sure is really easy to do.

Basically what I want to do, is execute an SQL statement, that will return a single value. I then need to store this value as a variable, so that I can pass it into another query later.

It seems easy to output the record, but how do I store it as a variable !!

This is my code to connect and run the SQL... all I need to do as retreive the value, and put it aganist a variable....

Function higher_manager_ein() As System.Data.IDataReader

Dim connectionString As String = "server='myserver'; user id='userid'; password='pwd'; database='DB'"
Dim dbConnection As System.Data.IDbConnection = New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection(connectionString)

Dim queryString As String = "SELECT distinct MEASURE FROM [CCC_MEASURE] where ein = '" & request("man_ein2") & "'"
Dim dbCommand As System.Data.IDbCommand = New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand
dbCommand.CommandText = queryString
dbCommand.Connection = dbConnection

dbConnection.Open
Dim dataReader As System.Data.IDataReader = dbCommand.ExecuteReader(System.Data.CommandBehavior.CloseConnection)

Return dataReader

End Function

Capturing Queries

May 22, 2000

Is there any way(other than Profiler) to capture a full SQL Query statment. I've used dbcc inputbuffer and the current activity screen, both return 255 characters. I'd like to capture the whole query. Thanks

Capturing Server Name?

Sep 20, 2004

Hi y'all....long time, I know...

I have what OUGHT to be a simple question...or so I think (which really hurts, mind you...)

I am writing a stored proc that will reside on several different databases and be used to write a row to a "wait table" that is used to control processing in the various databases...

Essentially, the stored proc already exists, and writes what is essentially a note (or process semaphore) that says "Hey, Process XYZ is waiting on the completion of process 123"

Problem is...process XYZ has the same name on a number of different servers, so I have to come up with a way to differentiate the process name that's waiting on a job on a single server (in other words, 5 or more XYZ's can be waiting on a single job on a single server in the network, and the wait table resides on that single server).

So...my thought (again, think pain) is that I will put a process name of "SERVER.XYZ" into the wait table.

The SP I will use to write the "waiting on" semaphore is a common one, so - long story short(er) I need a way to capture the name of the current server (like db_name(), only server_name() - or something like it).

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance...
Paul

Capturing ID When Executing An INSERT

Jan 2, 2008

I have a bit of code that executes an INSERT statement to add a record to an existing table. This table of course has an automatically incrementing ID field, and I'd like to somehow have my INSERT statement return the value of that ID field so that I can automatically show the user the record they've added.

Is there a clean way to do this?

Capturing Value Of Identity Column For Use Later?

Jul 20, 2005

This doesn't work because the first INSERT is creating multiplerecords for multiple projects. @@IDENTITY, then, contains the Identitycolumn value for the last tblWeekReportedLine record inserted.Consequently, all the hours records are then associated withthat last value.The source work table, #EstimateLines, is a pivoted representationwith a Begin/End date and some Hours for each of six periods - a lineper project that gets pushed up to the DB by some VB code.Definition below the sample coding.The "@WeekReportedID" value was successfully captured whenprevious coding inserted six records into that table: one foreach date range (i.e. column in the UI screen)Sounds like I'm approaching this wrong.Suggestions on the right way to go about it?---------------------INSERT INTO tblWeekReportedLine(WeekReportedID,RelativeLineNumber,ProjectID)SELECT@WeekReportedID1,#EstimateLines.RelativeLineNumber,#EstimateLines.ProjectIDFROM#EstimateLines;SET@CurWeekReportedLineID = @@IDENTITY;INSERT INTO tblHour(WeekReportedID,WeekReportedLineID,HoursDate,Hours,HoursTypeID,HoursType,TaxCodeID,TaxCode)SELECT@WeekReportedID1,@CurWeekReportedLineID,@BeginDate1,Estimate1,@DummyHoursTypeID,@DummyHoursType,@DummyTaxCodeID,@DummyTaxCodeFROM#EstimateLines;------------------------The #Temp table create via VB:------------------------1030 .CommandText = "CREATE TABLE #EstimateLines " & _" ( " & _" PersonID int, " & _" ProjectID int, " & _" RelativeLineNumber int, " & _" Available1 decimal(5,2) Default 0, Estimate1decimal(5,2) Default 0, BeginDate1 DateTime, EndDate1 DateTime, " & _" Available2 decimal(5,2) Default 0, Estimate2decimal(5,2) Default 0, BeginDate2 DateTime, EndDate2 DateTime, " & _" Available3 decimal(5,2) Default 0, Estimate3decimal(5,2) Default 0, BeginDate3 DateTime, EndDate3 DateTime, " & _" Available4 decimal(5,2) Default 0, Estimate4decimal(5,2) Default 0, BeginDate4 DateTime, EndDate4 DateTime, " & _" Available5 decimal(5,2) Default 0, Estimate5decimal(5,2) Default 0, BeginDate5 DateTime, EndDate5 DateTime, " & _" Available6 decimal(5,2) Default 0, Estimate6decimal(5,2) Default 0, BeginDate6 DateTime, EndDate6 DateTime, " & _" );"--------------------------PeteCresswell

Capturing Events In A DataGrid

Jul 20, 2005

I'm trying to add functionality to a VB 6 application allowingcustomer service to add a customer number to a new customer.Customers are added to the database by sales personnel, and aprospective customer may have multiple rows due to projected ordersfor multiple products. Customer numbers are assigned when a newcustomer makes their first order.I'm using a DataGrid connected to an ADO Data Control. The datacontrol is connected to a view in SQL Server using the 'distinct'directive (I know it's not updatable) to show only one line per newcustomer. What I wish to do is capture the update event (probablythrough the FieldChangeComplete routine of the data control), manuallyassign the newly entered customer number to all appropriate rows inthe database, and cancel the update event with no notifications.I'm having two problems:1. I can't capture the newly entered customer number. The Textproperty of the DataGrid returns the old value of the cell instead ofthe newly entered value. How do I get the edited value?2. Even though I set adStatus = adStatusCancel in theFieldChangeComplete routine, I get a Microsoft DataGrid Control dialogstating 'Operation was Canceled'. How do I avoid this notification?
