SQL Server Management Studio Express Doesn't Recognize .mdf File

Feb 25, 2008

Hi,
I just started working with Visual Web Devloper 2005 Express Developer and sql server 2005 Express Edition. My web is hosted with 1and1.com. They have informed me that I can't upload the database generated by the developer software and from what I understand, I will import those files into the mssqlserver database on my site. From my limited understanding, this is done from the backup file that is created from my local sql database. I didn't see a way to do that within VWD 2005 so I downloaded SQL Server Management Studio Express. When I opened it I chose the SQLServer (sqlExpress) located on my computer. The connection seems to work fine. However when I go to open a file and open the database that is in my web I get an error that states that there is no editor and to be sure the aplication for file type .mdf has been installed.

I'm not sure where to go from here or if I'm even on the correct path.

Thanks,
Leesha

Server Management Report Samples Cannot Cope With Multi-valued Parameters

Mar 19, 2008

I downloaded the sample reports for report execution from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms161561.aspx

to display reporting services report execution data which worked fine until I'd written a report with multi-valued parameters. As soon as this was designed and more importantly run by an user the package used to create the reports crashed.

I've found out why it's breaking mainly through digging around in the script task where the package crashes and also through surfing the net and finding this

https://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=967081&SiteID=1

thread. I've tried their fix but it still crashes unfortunately.

It seems like the issue is populating an array indexes in the script component in the update parameters data flow task. I think this was written to deal with minimal parameter requests, however I've recently written a multi-valued parameter report and it's made the string containing the parameter details has now hit the maximum length for the string. Changing the WSTR 4000 to a different size doesn't seem to have an effect, and the forum entry above doesn't hint at what the problem is apart from the script not being able to deal with the length.

The error I now get is as follows:

at MyComponent1.ScriptMain.Input0_ProcessInputRow(Input0Buffer Row) in dts://Scripts/MyComponent1/ScriptMain:line 35
at MyComponent1.UserComponent.Input0_ProcessInput(Input0Buffer Buffer) in dts://Scripts/MyComponent1/ComponentWrapper:line 68
at MyComponent1.UserComponent.ProcessInput(Int32 InputID, PipelineBuffer Buffer) in dts://Scripts/MyComponent1/ComponentWrapper:line 25
at Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.ScriptComponentHost.ProcessInput(Int32 inputID, PipelineBuffer buffer)

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

Multi Value Select Doesn't Work

Jan 31, 2008

My report runs from a stored proc, which gets the user to input a project id and a status. So the where statement in my stored proc looks like this:

Where (p.project LIKE @project_ID + '%' AND p.status IN(@Active))

On my report, I have set the @Active parameter to multi-value, and entered the available values(active and inactive). When I run the report, and only select one of the values, the report runs just fine, but when I use the "select all" option, I get no results at all.

I can't see where I am going wrong. Anyone got any ideas?

SSIS Central Server?

Sep 20, 2007

We have about 150 SQL servers and basically we're considering the pros and cons of installing SSIS on a central SSIS server - that is responsible for all DTS jobs - as opposed to installing SSIS on the local SQL instance.

On the plus side so far:

1./ Central administration, alerting, change management etc

2./ Possible performance gain on the local instance not having SSIS installed?

On the negative side:

1./ Central point of failure

2./ Possibility that it would need to be a clustered...

3./ Compatibility issues may mean having to make the central SSIS server 32-bit?

4./ Possible performance cost of remote SSIS?

5./ With multiple DTS packages running at different times, when would we take the server down for maintenace...?

Would appreciate your thoughts.

Central Store Of SQL Server Registration

Nov 7, 2000

I am attempting to centrally register all of my sql server so I can go to any workstation and open enterprise manager and select to read the sql server registration from the remote server.

I followed all of the steps in books on line about going to the central server, turning off the store/user independent option, registering all of the servers and then going to a workstation and selecting the option to read from the central server.

I get error messages like registry read error: 5 and registry read error: 2

This is getting frustrating because we have a lot of servers in our environment and re-registering them everytime is getting to be quite a pain. If the central store will not work, is there a way to write a script to register all servers in an enterprise.

Thanks,

PJ

Unable To Perform Set Server Defaults In Sharepoint 3.0 Central Administration

Apr 12, 2007

I'm not quite sure where to post this question, so I'll try here. We've been struggling getting SQL2005 reporting services integrated with Share Point Services 3.0 for several days now.

We've installed SQL Reporting Services with SP2 and run the SharePoint Reporting Services add-in. We've been able to go through the SQL Reporting Services Configuration and now were at the last step in the SharePoint Application Management Reporting Services configuration.

The first two steps of Manage Integration Settings and Grant Database Access was sucessful. The final step of "Set Server Defaults" gives us a 404 error message. There is nothing in the Event Log to suggest that there was a problem, and the SQL2005 Server is in SharePoint Integration mode. I've searched but can't find a solution. Can anyone steer me in the right direction please?

SQL Server Authentication Across Domains

Aug 31, 2006

Viual Studio 2003; ASP.Net; .Net Framework 1.1, SQL Server 2000Hi,We have two domains in our network - prod.domain.com and dev.domain.com. There is no trust relationship between the two domains. I am trying to connect to an SQL Server in dev.domain.com using SQL Server Authentication from prod.domain.com. My connection string uses the fully qualified domain name (xxxxxx.dev.domain.com) to connect. The error I receive is SQL Server does not exist or access denied. I can access the database through SQL Query Analyser and SQL Enterprise Manager across the domains with no problems. I can also connect through a .udl file using the same SQL Server Authentication information. If I run my application from dev.domain.com accessing a database that sits in prod.domain.com then the connection is fine. Can someone point me in the direction of any areas I can troubleshoot to see what is preventing the connection please? The only things I can see on the web are details of windows authentication across domains which isn't relevant to me in this instance. I've been pulling what little hair I have out over this for the last week. Thanks in advance.

SQL Server Domains/Workgroups

I have a network that has 10 machines-6 of them have sql server registrations. I am able to access all 6 from any machine while they are on the domain. However I also need to take 5 of them off of the domain to a remote site and set up a workgroup. I am able to log in to each sql server from the workgroup login but I am not able to run software on one machine that connects to a sql server registration on another machine in the workgroup. I get a "sql server does not exist or access denied" message. Further, when I open enterprise manager, the other sql servers don't show up and I am unable to add them using the wizard.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Running ETL Package Using SQL Server Agent Over 2 Different Domains

Oct 3, 2007

Okay, i've got an ETL package which works flawless, we've created a scheduled job for it which also worked.
This ETL accesses a flat file located on a server on a different location in the same domain.

Last week we start a migration to a new network, the location where the flat file is stored has already moved to the new domain but the SQL server agent is still on the old domain.
There is a trust between the 2 domains, the network user from the old domain has been added on the server in the new domain where the flatfile is located.

If i run the etl package manually it works flawless, now if i run the etl using the SQL server agent it won't run anymore.

I get the following error:

Executed as user: OIdDomaindwh. ...n 9.00.1399.06 for 32-bit Copyright (C) Microsoft Corp 1984-2005. All rights reserved. Started: 21:15:00 Error: 2007-10-02 21:15:02.10 Code: 0xC001401E Source: Rolmer_Product Connection manager "Flatfile Product" Description: The file name "\fs-cha-fs01dwhproduit.csv" specified in the connection was not valid.

Don't tell me its a problem related to the user that the SQL Server Agent is set to because its set to OldDomaindwh which is the same user i use to login on the server where i can manually run it without problems. The problem only occures when i run it using the SQL server agent which uses the same user to execute packages.

This is a very difficult problem i doubt anyone here will be able to crack this nut, but if they do i'll be very impressed because it would require a real smart network admin with SQL experiance to figure this one out...

Good luck

Integration Services :: Connect Database Across 2 Domains Using Linked Server?

Oct 4, 2015

We have an Enterprise setup with multiple domains.

We a Domain A with SQL server 2008R2 say SQL-A and Domain B with SQL server 2008R2 ( SQL-B). It will be like SQL-A will always access SQL-B. Reverse is not required.

In Domain A we have a .Net Application which accesses SQL-A to perform CRUD operations which ultimately come to SQL- B since all SQL tables exist in SQL- B only.

Need to know the right way to implement Linked Server from SQL-A to SQL-B, so that Domain issues as well as DML execution work smooth.

I need not worry about DDL in SQL-A And SQL-B as it will taken care of by network and H/W team. I just need to focus on as developer.

ASP.net Page Connection To SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition Failure (across Domains/networks)

Oct 4, 2007

Hi all,
I have a production website at Godaddy and an ASP.net 2.0 page that successfull connects to a SQL 2005 instance provided by Godaddy using SQL authentication(User ID/Password). The Godaddy database has become too small (200MB limit) and the plan is to use the SQL Server 2005 standard edition at my office. In other words, I want to host my own SQL server and keep the front-end at Godaddy.
The ASP.net test page at Godaddy generates the basic connection errors when attempting to connect to my SQL server at the office. This error has several variations depending on how the connection string is configured:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.)
In this case the connection string is:
Data Source=xxx.xxx.xx.xxx,1433; Network Library=DBMSSOCN; Initial Catalog=Test; User ID=xxx; Password=xxx"
I've embedded this connection string directly into the ASP.net test page in order to make this page independent of the web.config file.
My MS SQL server is on a Small Bussiness Server 2003 with Sharepoint and Remote Workplace running, and this machine is behind a linksys router, and Routing and Remote Access is running in place of windows firewall.
I've openned ports TCP 1433 and UDP 1434 on the router and Routing and Remote Access. Telnet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxxx 1433 connects successfull, and the SQL log shows listening on 1433. I don't know if telnet is telling me that there is successful connection to the port on the router, or if it makes it all the way to the SQL server.
The SQL server is running the default instance MSSQLSERVER. Locally, I am able to connect using SQL 2005 Studio, and I am able to confirm this activity in the SQL log. Since I've openned port 1433, I also see numerous dictionary attacks in the SQL Log. Based on this, remote connectivity is there.
The strange observation is that the SQL log shows no sign of a connection attempt from the ASP.net page. The connection appears to be failing before it reaches the SQL server. I've openned ports in the Linksys router and the NAT/Firewall the same way I've openned them for Sharepoint and Remote Workplace.
I also found that when I move the ASP.net test page to another ISP, then the SQL connection that worked from the Godaddy website, is no longer able to connect. An explanation of this would also be very helpful to me.
Is there something that needs to be configured to expose the SQL server to ASP.net pages that is different from remote access?
Does IIS need to somehow be involved?
Is there something in Small Business Server 2003 that could be interferring with ASP.net page requests to the SQL server?
Do I need to run my machine as a web server to make this work?
Any help with this configuration would be greatly appreciated.

Multi-database Multi-server

Mar 27, 2007

I am new to Reporting Services and hope that what I am looking to do is within capabilities :-)

I have many identical schema databases residing on a number of data servers. These support individual clients accessing them via a web interface. What I need to be able to do is run reports across all of the databases. So the layout is:

Dataserver A

Database A1

Database A2

Database A3

Dataserver B

Database B1

Database B2

Dataserver C

Database C1

Database C2

Database C3

I would like to run a report that pulls table data from A1, A2, A3, B1, B2, C1, C2, C3

Now the actual number of servers is 7 and the number of databases is close to 1000. All servers are running SQL2005.

Is this something that Reporting Services is able to handle or do I need to look at some other solution?

Thanks,

Michael

Support For SQL Express2005 My Host Provider Does Not Provide Support?

Dec 5, 2005

Reader Community
I've just started hosting my newly created Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition web site.  Unfortunately the Login group membership functions will not function correctly.  Having contacted the web service hosting provider, They replied: "We do not support SQL express2005.  The only way to use the extra functions of ASP.NET2 such as group membership is if it is using an SQL 2000 database to connect to. "
Is it possible to design web sites with Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition that store membership details on an SQL 2000 database?
I've just paid £88 approx. $140 for a years subscription, have I chosen the wrong web service hosting provider?
Should I have designed the web site with a better web site design software tool that also makes designing membership login functionality easy, just as Microsoft Visual Web developer 2005 express edition?
Look forward to all comments?

Central Database

Nov 1, 2007

Hi I would like to use SQL Express as a central database in a project but I have few things in my mind needs to be answered.

I need to create a parts table and when a user opens a part in the client application no other user should be able to modify that part info. Is this taken care by database or should I use a flag in the parts table which indicates particular part is opened and in use?

If a row (a part) in part table is read by a client how this effects the other related tables? For instance if I open part1 info in my client application and also accessed to part1 properties in another table, how can I prevent other clients to make modification in related tables related rows?

What is the best way for submiting an image for a part in part table? I dont want to store images in the database. Do I need some file transfer code which takes care of transferring image and returns the path to the database?

Thanks
