Certain Numeric Fields Not Read From The Excel File When Using A Excel File Source.

Jul 20, 2006

I have the Excel Connection Manager and Source to read the contents from an Excel file. For some reason couple of numeric fields from the Excel worksheet are brought over as nulls even though they have a value of 300 and 150. I am not sure why this is happening. I looked into the format of the fields and they are set to General in Excel, I tried setting them to numeric and that did not help.

All the other content from the excel file is coming thru except for the 2 numeric fields.

I tried to bring the contents from the excel source to a text file in csv format and for some reason the 2 numeric fields came out as blank.

Any inputs on getting this addressed will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Manisha

Meta Data Synchronization With Excel File Source Once We Update The File

Dec 28, 2007

hi all;

1. Excel file Source--> monthly Revenue details
2. Derived Colum Transoformations
3. Oledb Destination

its my flow in one of my packates (ETL job)
Excel file contains monthly revenue details, i wanna import the excel data to my database staging table, so i've created the package.
its working fine...

Problem
if we change the new data for the next month and running the package its not running;
the same file, same format, only we delete the contents, of the file except first row of the excel sheet,
and pasting the new data;
new data is coming from Oracle DataBase in the form of excel sheet ( manually they will copy the data and sending to us)

i open that package in design mode and while double clicking the excel file source it says <column name>'s Meta Data needs to be synchronized
Do you want to Fix this issue automatically with the available external column's meta data

Clearly noted that its a data type issue; i have changed the corresponding data types as it is in the previous Excel sheet which is equivalant to the Table its copying to.

now the package is running with validation warnings, External Column "Invoice Amount" needs to be updated...etc. some 2 or three warning messages i can able to see in the package Execution wizard,

ok, i'm ready to accept these warnings, and i want my package running from my server;( packages had been deployed in to the Centeralized server; every time if we want to run the package, we have the asp.net webpage, that is executing the package in an On_click event)

The package is not running from the server, its due to the meta data change in the Excel file( i guess)

please suggest me some guide lines to resolve this meta data issue, i want my excel sheet meta data should not change when we have new updates in it;

otherwise suggest me some solutions that i can validate the excel sheet before running the package and testing whether the data is in correct format or not? its a kind of Data Profiling activity;

i know its some what crazy, but i need to maintain the system with permanent solution, instead of facing this meta data mismatch issue!!!

some what lenthy explanation--> its needed for my dear powerful microsoft responders. i think i 've explained my problem clearly, if i don't let me know your queries, i'll try my level best.

Uploading Text And Numeric Data From An Excel File

Nov 3, 2006

Hi,

I have found a problem with my SSIS package. The package takes a Excel File using the Excel Source/Excel connection manager objects. There's a Data Conversion Object which sets all the fields to be DT_STR and then I import the data into a Holding table using a OLEDB Destination Object.

My Excel file contains a list of Code/Description pairs. The problem I have is that I can have data such as the following

CODE

A101

A102

A103

12

1.2i

What seems to be happening is that when the data is imported into the holding table and the first rows are Alphanumeric then the fields where there's a code such as 12 get converted to NULL for some reason. If all the codes are the same type (either Alphanumeric or numericit doesn't matter, as long as they are all the same) the import works perfectly well.

I need to be able to import all of these codes without SSIS converting some to NULL. Has anyone come across this problem before? If so, is there something I am doing wrong or a workaround?

Many thanks in advance

Rob

DTS With Excel File As Source

Feb 3, 1999

I'm trying to write a DTS package that reads data from an excel spreadsheet. I'm having a problem getting all the data from the spreadsheet, seems that OLE DB is "too" smart. There is one column that has either numeric values or text values in its row cells. When I browse the spreadsheet in DTS (transform properties, browse button) I only see the text values. OLE DB has placed nulls or blanks into the cells with the numeric values. If I edit the spreadsheet to change the column header to contain a number, then the browse window shows only the numeric values and blanks out the text values. Any suggestion on how to get OLE DB/DTS to treat the numeric values as text? In the spreadsheet, I've tried changing the cell formats to text and to general. This had no effect.

Integration Services :: How To Make SSIS Read Excel File

Dec 7, 2011

I’ve been trying for a while now (won’t say how long), to get BIDS to read a very simple Excel file.

I’m talking SIMPLE!!  No matter what I don, SSIS keeps throwing an error, and of course it doesn’t say what the error is, so I can’t really debug it.

I’ve tried this at least 20x with flat files, and it works perfect each time. I’ve done Data Conversions, Sorting, Union All, and several other Transformations; all work perfect.

Trying to used Excel as a data source, is proving to be a mind numbing experience. Of over 20 different attempts, it hasn’t worked even once. I can make it as simple as you can possibly imagine, and SSIS, refuses to even perform the first step (I’m not even trying to create a table in SQL Server anymore).

I have the Excel file path (very simple)

I have the Excel version (very simple)

I have the Connection Manager (very simple)

I have the Sheet name (very simple)

All I can do is see a preview of the Excel sheet before the process runs.  As soon as I het F5, I get an instant error, for no reason whatsoever, and no debugging options, whatsoever.

Dynamic Source For Excel File At Runtime

Aug 23, 2006

Hi,

I've seen a number of posts similar to this but i still cannot figure out what i need to do to get it working. So here goes with a couple of newbie questions.

Question 1:
Once created how do i go about executing a SSIS package. I want to be able to call it from a C# application from which i pass in a couple of parameters?

Question 2:
How do i go about setting the file path of my Excel source to a dynamic value passed at runtime. I want to be able to loop through a number of Excel files and do some processing on them. I've set up a variable (which i think i need to do) after that i get stuck however. Some other posts suggest configuration packages but i cannot get my head around how they work?

Any help on this matter would be gratefully recieved.

Thanks in advance,

SQL 2012 :: OPENROWSET To Read In Data From Excel 2010 File (XLSX)

Jun 12, 2015

I have a test server (TEST1) running SQL 2012 and Windows 2012R2. One of the developers wants to use OPENROWSET to read in data from an Excel 2010 file (an xlsx file).

I have loaded the Microsoft Drivers in "AccessDatabaseEngine_64.exe" and enabled the Ad Hoc Distributed Queries option in SQL.

This is the sample code we are working with:

SELECT
X.MEMBID
FROM OPENROWSET(
'MSDASQL',
'Driver={Microsoft Excel Driver (*.xls, *.xlsx, *.xlsm, *.xlsb)};DBQ=etworkserverFolder1Folder2MEMBIDs.xlsx',
'SELECT * FROM [Sheet1$]'
) AS X

I can run the sample query from my laptop with SSMS (I have admin rights) and I can also run it as SA from my laptop. So all is good, right?

But if I RDC into TEST1, I cannot run the query. I get this error:

OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "(null)" returned message "[Microsoft][ODBC Excel Driver] Your network access was interrupted. To continue, close the database, and then open it again.".
OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "(null)" returned message "[Microsoft][ODBC Excel Driver]General error Unable to open registry key Temporary (volatile) Ace DSN for process 0x574 Thread 0xb74 DBC 0x1d07f08 Excel'.".
OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "(null)" returned message "[Microsoft][ODBC Excel Driver]General error Unable to open registry key Temporary (volatile) Ace DSN for process 0x574 Thread 0xb74 DBC 0x1d07f08 Excel'.".
Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "(null)".But wait! It gets better.

I can run the query as SA from TEST1.

And of course, the developer can't run it either.

And it works fine in the production server.

I'm thinking the basics are there but something isn't right in some permission somewhere.

Cannot Import Excel Source File With Empty Last Column

Oct 23, 2007

Hi All,

I have a particular issue that has been causing me some problems for a while. I have an SSIS package that imports an excel file into my database, and then performs various data manipulation that I won't go into. The problem I am having is at the import end. The excel source file I am working on is provided to me by my client. It is a fixed format and doesn't change, it contains a header row and there are 32 headings. The trouble I am having is that quite often, the last column is empty, i.e. it contains no data. The header is still there, but theres no data underneath. When I try to import this file using my SSIS package it fails, and complains about needing to remove the metadata for this final column from the External Columns list (VS_NEEDSNEWMETADATA). When I try to preview this file in the properties of the Excel Data Source, the last column does not exist. It's as if it's determining that as there is no data in that final column, that it's unnecessary and not part of the data set, even though it has a header.

Now I've done a bit of research, and found cases that a sort of like mine, I know that the excel file has the first 8 records sampled to determine the data format. This problem suggested to use the IMEX=1 extension in the connection string, which didn't help. I also discovered that when using flat files, if you have odd numbers of columns in your comma seperated list there can be problems. But neither of these issues seem to match the issue I'm facing.

Has ANYONE had a similar problem to me, and can anyone offer any kind of assistance regarding what I need to do to import an excel file that may or may not have data in the final column?

Thanks in advance,

Paul

How To Change Data Types In Excel Source File?

Mar 8, 2006

I'm getting a bit lost in SSIS. I've got an Excel source file that I'm trying to load into a table. I keep getting validation errors that warn about not being able to convert between unicode and non-unicode string data types.

I'm trying figure out where I have to change this and am frankly confused. It seems SSIS is selecting various columns as unicode/WSTR data types, but I want them to import as regular string types.

On the Data Flow tab in SSIS, I right-click on the source Data Flow component (the Excel file) and select Show Advanced Editor. Then on the last tab, Input and Output Properties, there's a tree view for the Excel output. There are "External Columns" and "Output Columns" containers in the tree view.

I tried setting some of these but they don't seem to "take". Do I need to change the data type for each column under both the External and Output columns?

That seems like a lot of work! And, as I say, I tried setting some, but I still got the same validation errors. So, then I go back to this spot (Advanced Editor -> Input and Output Properties tab) and my changes seem to have been lost.

Any help would be appreciated!

Import Excel Data From User-selected Source File

Dec 4, 2007

Is it possible to import data from an Excel spreadsheet using OPENROWSET or OPENDATASOURCE without having to explicitly define the filepath of the source file? Currently, I have this piece of code within a sproc:

INSERT INTO [dbo].[ProductionRequirementDetail]

([ProductionRequirementHeaderID], [SKU], [Quantity])

SELECT @ProductionRequirementHeaderID,

[SKU],

[LAMPS]

FROM OPENROWSET ('Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0','Excel 8.0; Database=C:WeeklySchedule.xls', 'SELECT * FROM [Master$C5:Q65536]') AS XL

LEFT JOIN [dbo].[PartMaster] ON (RIGHT([XL].[CODE], 7) = [PartMaster].[SKU])

WHERE [SKU] IS NOT NULL

AND [CODE] IS NOT NULL

AND [LAMPS] IS NOT NULL

AND [LAMPS] > 0

AND [LampTypeID] = @LampTypeID

I would like to remove the hardcoded reference 'Database=C:WeeklySchedule.xls' and replace it with a parameter for the filepath. Is this possible? This is in SQL Server 2000. Also, if there is a way to do this with DTS I'd be open to doing it that way too.

Integration Services :: Source Excel File Causing Failure In Agent

Aug 13, 2015

I have a package from SQL Server 2008 R2, that loads data from .xlsx file to database table. There are total 15 columns and 14000 rows in the .xlsx. The package runs fine in BIDS. But the same package in SQL Agent fails with error "omponent "Excel Source" (1)" failed validation and returned validation status "VS_ISBROKEN".

When I tried to run the package by deleting the half of the records for first 7000 rows it ran successfully in agent. Then the second half (last 7000 rows) also succeed from agent job. So, there is no issue with the data/datatypes.The agent job is able to run with record upyo 11000 rows in .xlsx. When I am running for 12000 rows it is failing. Is there any problem with the number of records in .xlsx or size through SQL Agent?

Excel Source Numeric/string Data Problem

Oct 26, 2006

i've been reading some problems with excel source data being force as
numeric type when there are string/numeric type in the data, but adding
IMEX=1 to the extended properties will fix this problem...this is true
but not in my case...

say my excel file have about 40 rows..if row 1-39 in column A are all
NULL and row 40 has a string in it, the string in row 40 will not be
converted and the excel source is forcing this column A data type to be
numeric..having IMEX=1 in there does not work..however..if i add a
string anywhere in row 1-8 in column A, the the string in row 40 will
be converted because the external data type now is a string..

anyone know how to solve this problem?

SSIS Excel Source Read Problem

Jun 23, 2006

I have a problem with reading data from an Excel file in SSIS. I'm trying to read a column that mostly consists of decimal values, but there are couple places where column entry is 2 numbers separated by a slash (e.g. "100/6.0"). SSIS tries to be smart and identifies the column data type as decimal and when it reads the cell with the slash in it, it reads as NULL. I tried to make my excel source reader component to read that cell as a string, but it gives me an error. If anybody has come across something like this, I would highly appreciate some help

Integration Services :: SSIS Excel Data Source Numeric Values Returned As Null

May 8, 2009

I'm using SSIS 2005 Enterprise edition,  I'm creating a package that reads an excel (xls) file using the "excel source" component, and it dumps the data into an OLEDB destination (a sql server). When I drag the excel source component and create the excel connection to my file the component automatically reads the columns and their datatypes.

The problem is that I have a column which has numeric data and the package uploads as NULL every number that starts with a zero. (note: in excel this column is formatted as "text", despite it has only numbers, because it's the only way excel maintains the left sided zeros).

So I checked the data types by right clicking the excel source component -> show advanced editor and my surprise is that this column's data type is detected as double-precision float, and it doesn't let me change it. URL... but it only works when the first row of data has a number beginning with zero on this column. How to get the data imported correctly?

Integration Services :: Excel Destination With Run Date-1 Inside File Not The File Name

Aug 26, 2015

I have a ssis package where I need to have excel destination.  In the Excel file, I need to have few rows with some text and then populate data below the text. One the text is like this:

Data as of:  08/25/2015

if the report ran today, then Data as of will have Yesterday. So, if the user opens that excel file after a week, then user should see same  Data as of:  08/25/2015. not today()-day(1).

I was planing to handle on excel side with today()-day(1). but it only works the day it was run. Then the excel file is open after few days later, then it might as Data as of:  08/30/2015 which is not true. It should still stay Data as of:

08/25/2015 on what ever date the excel file is open. The SSIS package  runs only once.

How do I handle this so that whenever user open the file, they will see Data as of:  08/25/2015. This is not a column in excel. It is like a description of data in excel.

Reports Exported As Excel Cannot Be Read By Mac Version Of Excel

Jan 31, 2007

I searched the list but did not see anything related.

I cannot open a file directly exported from RS in the Excel format. If I open the file in the Windows version and then close it, no need to even save it, I can then open it with the Mac version of Excel. The file size after closing is about 2K less so the RS program is adding something onto the file that the Mac version does not like. It will crash Excel when trying to open.

I cannot export the report as CSV as it will not correctly import into Excel on the Mac.

Is there a work around for this?

Thanks.
