Change Default Location Where New DB's Are Created
Jul 19, 2007
Hello
The default location where db's are created is almost full.
Is there any way to change the default location where the .mdf and .ldf are created when I create a new db? I know I can do this when I create a new db and go select where I want it to be, but can I make it default to a different directory automatically so no human intervention is needed?

is there a way to change SSMS 2012 default query save location?
Scenario:
1. Open SSMS 2. Create new query 3. Click Save
I see "DocumentsSQL Server Management Studio" folder, but I want to change it to be "d:". How do I do this? I tried:
1. [URL]- in folder "DocumentsSQL Server Management StudioSettingsSQL Server Management Studio" there is a file NewSettings.vssettings, setting it to "d:" or "d:" didn't work.
2. Changing HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL Server100ToolsShell VisualStudioProjectsLocation didn't work too. There is no "Shell" under "110Tools"
Did I do something wrong, or is there another way?
We have a scenario to process last created/modified files from a location using SSIS package , eventhough the folder contains multiple files with same name and extension.
Kindly give respond to this if any one has worked on this.
How can i change the default folder to which my database files are saved? right now it's saving everything to

uggg! i can't even find an option to use a "save as" or export the mdf file. the "save as" tries to save the solution file. Any help is greatly appreciated.
I'm trying to get the information where the databases are stored by default. With Management Studio I can look on Server Properties -> Database Settings -> Database Default locations
I'm setting up a new server and would like the default location for the transaction logs to be on a different drive from the databases. Seems like the best way to do this would be to configure the Master database log location for the drive & directory where I want all trans logs stored. So far, I've been unable to accomplish this. I know I can specify the log location manually each time I create a database, but I'm hoping to configure a default. Is this possible to configure? And if so, how?
I want to change the default backup location of MSSQL. I know we can configure it while installing. But I want to change the default backup location of a particular database, running on a database server.
The default location is like. Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMssqlBackup
If you enter "Create Database test", the database files (mdf file & log file) are created, by default, in:- C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLData I want to change that to:- D:Database Files I sucessfully moved the model database to this location (using the instructions in BOL) assuming that all new databases would now get created in the same location, but they don't. They still get created in: C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLData
So how do I change the default? (It's not satisfactory to have to move each database after it's created)
I have installed my modell database onto c:mssql7data...
How do I now change the properties of this so that when someone creates a database, the path it will get created to is set to d: I thought that I could just move model, but it seems that this isn't possible.
Prior to SP2, when you clicked the save button it would take you to the root of Report Server. With SP2 (in old-style Report Manager mode, not Sharepoint integrated mode) it takes you to the /Models directory by default when you click save. Is there a way around this?
If I launch Report Builder via the following URL, it does fix the problem. But it doesn't let me pick table/matrix/chart. I would like to override the default save location AND be able to let the user pick table/matrix/chart:
I would like to change the default location where new databases are created.
In Server Management Studio, I right clicked my instance and selected Properties. I selected the Database Settings option and am presented with an option to change the Database Default Location (the location for databases and logs can be changed here). If I change the paths for the DB's and logs, and create a new DB, the new files are saved to the new default location paths that I just entered.
My question is this:
If I change these paths, will my system databases (master, model, msdb, tempdb) still be accessible and usable by SQL server? I don't need (want) to change the location of these files, only all my other databases and logs.
How do I move the tempdb to a different drive? It can't be dropped and it is automatically put on the same drive as the master during installation. I have moved a transaction log to a different drive, but I can't change the tempdb location. Please help.
How can i change the location of the Sql Agent errorlog file, sqlagent.out When i choose Properties from the Sql Agent page, i can see the location and filename, but i am not able to change it. Is there some starup parm? And how can i apply it?
I have just installed SQL Server 2005. I was not given a choice during installation (that I remember seeing anyway) about which drive I wanted to place the default SQL instance on.
It ended up on C: and I needed it on D:.
So my questions are:
Is there a way to move it to D: that is easier than the way you had to go about it in SQL 2000? Is there a way to do it during setup so I can avoid this in the future?
In SQL2000, there's an option to change the location of the template folder. This allows me to create a customized set of templates on a network folder and have all the developers reference the centralized location. Can the same be done in SQL2005 and how would I go about doing so?
I want to move the log location to the E drive because it can get quite large. I already changed the setting in the SQL Server Error and Usage config tool, but this did not seem to make a difference.
i found that some stored procedure get created automatically in sqlserver 2000 (system stored procedures) ,while doing my work i accidentally deleted those stored procedures can any body answer following questions1: why these stored procedures are there and automatically created2: what happen en if i deleted those stored procedures3: how to recreate those stored procedures with limited user permission thanks in advance
I have created an asmx web service that deserializes a JSON string and should execute stored procedures in SQL Server Express 2005, the database is a mdf file. I have created a System DSN which works fine, I have allowed the remote connections and TCP/IP and created the firewall exceptions for sqlserver and sqlbrowser. I believe there's an issue with my connection string, I have tried everything and it still won't connect.
I had another running example but that was on a previous install of Windows XP Pro SP1 with login and this asmx web service worked fine. I run Windows XP Pro SP2 without a login now so I guess I can't use Integrated Security=true or Trusted Connection=yes but does anybody know the default login of a database created in Windows Visual Developer Express?
Here's my connection string:
Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory| antanplan.mdf;Integrated Security=SSPI;User Instance=false;UID=sa;PWD=sa"
And here's the error:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. If I can get around taking a few databases offline, I'd like to. I need to get logfiles on a lower-capacity drive.
Ideally, I wouldn't like to have multiple logfiles swimming around. But, I was thinking that if I created a second logfile, and then backed up the transaction log, I might be able to remove the first logfile?
The other thought I had, was creating a second logfile, and then turning off autogrow on the first log.
Maybe there is a better solution? Maybe neither of these will work? Thoughts?
I have developed a SSIS package on my desktop and the package involves loading of XML data into a database. The XML does not have inline schema and I generated the XSD file from SSIS.
I used Derived Column and Data Conversion to load the data into the database.
Now, i want to migrate the package to a server. Now, when i change the path of the XML and XSD files, all the tasks show error such as
"Input column 'Last_Updated' (4433) has lineage id 3586 that was not previously used in data flow...."
Why is this so? I am using the same XML/XSD files after i moved to the server.
How can I give default value to a field in a table which is already created, i.e. there is a table test and it have field test1 which is int(4). Now, I want to give a default value 0 to this field. As I am not able to access Enterprise Manager, I want to do it using Query Analyzer. How can I do this using Query Analyzer?
Is there a possibility to change the default instalation directory forthe logfiles for sql server 2000? I would like the default databasefiles to be placed on teh d: drive and the logfiles on the e: drive?Sjaak van Esdonk
I have a report that has a matrix. That matrix can have from 2 to 16 columns dependinging on the dataset result. Right now I am forced to place this matrix on the left side of the report and make a column layout pretty narrow. When dataset has more than 13 or so columns it looks OK, but when dataset has only two or three columns it looks weird with a matrix sitting in the left corner with two or three narrow columns and a lot of empty space to the right.
Is it possible programmatically change the width of the columns depending on their number in the dataset?
Is it possible to move the location of the matrix (horizontally) depending on the number of columns in the dataset?
