How To Change The Connection String In A Web.config File

Mar 9, 2007

I've recently uploaded my website, http://www.bigredsongbus.com, to my host. Unfortunately, they don't support the use of SQL Server Express. So, I've purchased an addon through my host - discountasp.net. I've attached my database file to their server, now all that I need to do is to change the connection string in my .config file so that it points to the SQL Server. I don't know how to do this. Any help, please?Jeffrey Way

Change Local Connection String On Remote Server

Jun 19, 2007

Hello,

I have searched every post and tried every connection string there but can't figure out how to connect to my database on my remote server. I am using Visual Developer 2005 Express Edition in C# and uploading it to a Windows server running asp.net 2.0. The domain has not resolved yet.

I am so new to this and have followed many tutorials step by step but none of them address this issue. They just show how to upload it to the server.

Do I need to use the SQL server provided by my host or can the database stay in the App_Data folder?

My local connection string works locally:

<add name="ConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|add_newSQL.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"
providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

When I uploaded to my server I changed SQLEXPRESS to (local) as advised in the forum.

<add name="ConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=(local);AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|add_newSQL.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"

providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

When I debug a page I get the <customErrors mode="Off"/>
error message even thought I have already set it in my remote web.config file which may be causing problems itself:

<configuration>

<appSettings/>

<connectionStrings>

<add name="ConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=(local);AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|add_newSQL.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"

providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

</connectionStrings>

<system.web>

<customErrors mode="Off" />

<compilation debug="false" />

<authentication mode="Windows" />

</system.web>

</configuration>

Thanks for any help you can offer. I wish I could find someone to hire to do this part for me or teach me how over the phone. Any suggestions?

3-Tier Architecture - Need To Change Connection String For DAL/BLL Dynamically On Login

Oct 31, 2006

Hi Folks ...Question for everyone that I have not been able to figure out.  I have an application that is spread across tiers:SQL Connection defined in Web.Config file that connects to SQLServer database.DAL layer created references SQL Connection in Web.Config file - have noticed this copies the connection string information to the local properties for each TableAdapter that is defined in the DAL layer.BLL Layer that references Table Adapters declared in the DAL layer.When the web site is called, the link will provide an encoded id.Sample call to website: http://www.mysamplesite.com/default.aspx?company=AE2837FG28F7B327Based on the encoded id that is passed to the site, I need to switch the connection string to use different databases on the backend.Sample connection string: Data Source=localhost;Initial Catalog=dbSystem_LiveCorp1;User ID=client;Password=live2006 I would need to change Initial Catablog to the following:Data Source=localhost;Initial Catalog=dbSystem_LiveCorp196;User ID=client;Password=live2006How do I do this and have the connection string reflected in all of the Table Adapters that I have created in the DAL layer - currently 100+ Table Adapters have been defined.As we gain new clients, I need to be able to have each clients information located in a different database within SQL Server.  Mandated - I have no choice in this requirement.  Being as I don't want to have to recreate the DAL for several dozen clients and maintain that whenever I make a change to the DAL to then replicate across multiple copies.  There has to be a way to dynamically alter the SQLConnection and have it recognized across all DAL TableAdapters.I'm developing with MS-Visual Studio 2005 - VB. Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks ...David   Any day above ground is a good day ...

Cannot Set Connection Property Of Backup Database Task If Connection String Is Customized In Connection Object

Aug 23, 2006

I added a connection (ADO.NET) object by name testCon in the connection manager - I wanted to programmatically supply the connection string. So I used the "Expressions" property of the connection object and set the connectionstring to one DTS variable. The idea is to supply the connection string value to the variable - so that the connection object uses my connection string.

Then I added a "Backup Database Task" to my package with the name BkpTask. Now whenever I try to set the connection property of BkpTask to the testCon connection object, by typing testCon, it automatically gets cleared. I am not able to set the connection value.

Then after spending several hours I found that this is because I have customized the connection string in testCon. If I don't customize the connection string, I am able to enter the "testCon" value in the connection property of the BkpTask.

Is this an intrinsic issue?

The Connection Name 'name' Was Not Found In The Applications Configuration Or The Connection String Is Empty

Jan 18, 2008

I have been trying to host my website on Go Daddy for about 3 weeks and I have cleared several problems but this one remains. I can get into the ASPNETDB database for doing logins , etc but I cant access my database called "PINEmgt".
To try to understand where the problem is located,I built a very simple application without login controls and put on it one Detailform accessing a single line table "Signin". I continually get the error message I got with my real app :"The connection name 'PINEMgtConnectionString2' was not found in the applications configuration or the connection string is empty. " There is only one connection string in my app -'PINEMgtConnectionString2'. When I run the app locally on my machine it works. After I move everything to Go Daddy, I get the error message and the following dump"

Line 24: </Fields>

Line 27: InsertCommand="INSERT INTO Signup(first_name, last_name, email, customer_id) VALUES (,,,)"
Line 28: SelectCommand="SELECT * FROM [Signup]"></aspqlDataSource>

This is indeed the code from my single page app.

The dump is:

SQL Server 2008 :: Connection Manager Not Using Connection String Value

Feb 19, 2015

I have a child package where the ConnectionString property of a Connection Manager is set by a Parent Package Variable Configuration. I set up a script task that brings up a message box with the value of the ConnectionString property right before the dataflow task.

MessageBox.Show(Dts.Connections["CPU_*"].ConnectionString.ToString());When I run the parent package, the message box shows that the connection string is changing with every iteration, but in the dataflow it always draws the data from the same source.

The connection manager is an ADO.Net type, RetainSameConnection is set to False, and I've been researching this for days.

(Update 2/23/2015): To make this stranger, when I look at the diagnostic logs, they tell me that when the new connections are being opened they are using the new connection strings.

Edit Connection Manager Connection String At Runtime With C#

Jul 3, 2007

This is the first time I have used SSIS, so please bear with the ignorance.

I have a super simple package that inserts x000's of rows into a temporary table. The data source is a file that the user will upload. I need to be able to tell the package what file to upload. I'm thinking the simplest thing would be to edit the connectionString property of the SourceConnectionFlatFile at runtime. Is this possible? What form should the file path be in (UNC, other)? And, are there any other considerations I should be aware of?

Thanks!

Change IP Address In A String

Apr 18, 2013

We got data from a dns server that looks like:

some columns.... |121.12.250.2.somestring......|

The ip address should look like 2.250.12.121:

We could use charindex, substring and len to cut the 4 parts of the ip and rebuild it in the right format.

Starts with
SELECT
CHARINDEX('.',mycolumn)
,LEFT(mycolumn, CHARINDEX('.',mycolumn) - 1) as part_four_of_ip
,CHARINDEX('.', SUBSTRING(mycolumn,CHARINDEX('.',mycolumn) - 1),len(mycolumn)
as position_of_second_dot
........ and so on.....

This will cause an awful long code. How to shorten that code?

How Do I Change The Default Collation String Of An Installation

Mar 22, 2006

HiWhen we installed SqlServer2000 we left the default collation name(Sql_Latin1_General_CPI_CI_AS).The user defined databases we created afterwards were defined with adifferent collation name in order to be able to accept the character setwe use, Hebrew.We are looking into switching DTSs that we use to copy data from ourmain system , that uses an Ingres database, into OSQL scripts. Althoughthe DTSs successfully copy the Hebrew letters when I copy data with OSQLit comes over as jibberish.After looking into the matter I came to the conclusion that while DTSrefers to specific databases and uses the destination database'scollation name , OSQL refers to the remote server and destination serverand therefore uses the collation name of the server and not of thedatabase. In order for it to successfully copy the Hebrew I need tochange the default collation name of the installation.Is "rebuild master" the way to do such a thing ? (this is a productionserver so we are wary of doing a "rebuild master")Has anyone else run into similar problems when transfering data betweenservers using OSQL ?ThanksDavid Greenberg

Variable Connection String For OLE DB Connection

May 15, 2007

Good Morning,

I hope that I am just missing a step in the process somewhere. I have established a string variable called DatabaseServer and another called DatabaseName. In the OLE DB connectionstring expression I have the following:

Code Snippet

"Data Source=" + @[User::DatabaseServer] + ";Initial Catalog=" + @[User::DatabaseName] + ";Provider=SQLNCLI.1;Integrated Security=SSPI;Auto Translate=False;"

My understanding is that changing the variable from SERVERA to SERVERB should repoint the connection. (Test to pre-production to production in my current promotion environment.) This should also take effect in any dataflow task using the database connection above right? When I try to repoint the server variable (and only the server variable) I am either a.)throwing errors saying the original connection cannot be found in the data flow task, or b.)the job appears to be processing fine, but the repoint did not take place and data is still flowing to the original server.

Can anyone offer suggestions as to what I am missing?

The properties values in the DB connection:

ConnectionManagerType is OLEDB

DataSourceID is blank

DelayValidation is False (Setting to true changes nothing in my test)

Expression for ConnectionString is (see above)

RetainSameConnection is False

SupportsDTCTTransactions is True (and appears to be unchangeable.)

Empty String Equals To Blank: How To Change This Behaviour?

Feb 11, 2008

This seems to be a rather old problem (http://www.themssforum.com/SQLServer/Does-empty/) but I couldn't find an answer yet.

The problem is: I have two tables t1 and t2 where t1 is a staging area of t2.
t1: (id int not null, phone varchar(30))
t2: (id int not null, phone varchar(30))

Data in t1: (1, '') <- empty string
Data in t2: (1, ' ') <- a blank

Comparing t1.phone with t2.phone results in equality which in my opinion isn't correct.

The question ist: How can I change the behaviour of SQL-Server to result in inequality so that the change in my staging table is detected correctly?

Thanks in advance

DTS Connection Change

Aug 6, 2001

We need to test a DTS package provided by a vendor. The DTS package imports data from flat files to a database. However, when I go in and change the DTS connection object for the database, it drops the data transformation properties. When I look at the properties it automatically points to the first (alphabetically speaking) table of our database. There is no way for me to verify that the mapping I am creating for these tables is accurate (and matches what the vendor had originally set). I am new to MS SQL and haven't found the answer ... any help would be appreciated!

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Using CAST Or CONVERT To Change Data From String To Datetime?

Apr 16, 2014

i am trying to take a field that has part of a date in it, so I have to parse it out as follows:

SUBSTRING(a1.Field1, 3, 2) + SUBSTRING(a1.Field1,5,2) + '20' + LEFT(a1.Field1,2)

This is because a date of 04/16/2014 will show as 160416 in the first part of the field I need to parse it out of, thus becoming 04162014.

From there I then need to convert this "date" into a legitimate SQL datetime type, so that I can then run a DATEDIFF to compare it to when the record was actually entered, which is a separate field in the table, and already in datetime format.

When I use the below statement, I am getting the message that, "Conversion failed when converting date and/or time from character string."

CAST((SUBSTRING(a1.Field1, 3, 2) + SUBSTRING(a1.Field1,5,2) + '20' + LEFT(a1.Field1,2)) as datetime)

I also tried CONVERT(datetime, (SUBSTRING(a1.Field1, 3, 2) + SUBSTRING(a1.Field1,5,2) + '20' + LEFT(a1.Field1,2)), and got the same message.

how I can parse that field, then convert it to a datetime format for running a DATEDIFF statement?

System.InvalidOperationException: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to obtaining a connection from the pool. This may have occurred because all pooled connections were in use and max pool size was reached.

Change Ssis Connection.

Jul 1, 2007

Hi,

i have SSIS proj whice now it connect to server A (whice is our test server)

now i want to modified our project that when we want it'll connect to server B (Our Prod server).

now i'm looking for something global that will switch the connection strings whenever i want.

what i find so far is to declare var for each package and give the var default value and to create script to change the value of the var.

is there a solution that will be for all the project and i don't have to change each package (i have alot of pckgs).

Thanks in advanced.

How To Dynamically Change Connection?

Oct 26, 2007

Hi. I have this kind of problem since I am not very conversant with SSIS
and stripting in VB.NET.

The set-up is the following:
Flat File Source -> Script Component -> Flat File Destination

The flat file source looks like this:

NameOfFile
Headers
Data
Data
Data and many more rows of Data
NameOfAnotherFile
Headers
Data
Data
Data and many more rows
NameOfAnotherFile
Headers
Data
Data and so on in the same manner...

My stript looks like that (not very complicated):
Public Overrides Sub Input0_ProcessInputRow(ByVal Row As Input0Buffer)
Dim strRow As String = Row.Column0.Trim()
Dim strFolder As String = "Data"
Dim strConn As String
Dim charSep() As Char = {CChar(" ")}

If Mid(strRow.ToLower(), 1, 2) = "d0" Then

' This is the file name, so start a new connection to a new file
' which definitely does not exist yet
strConn = strFolder + strRow + ".csv"

' DestinationFile is the name of the
' Flat File Connection Manager
With Me.Connections.DestinationFile
.ConnectionString = strConn
End With

Else
Row.Column0 = String.Join(",", strRow.Split(charSep, StringSplitOptions.RemoveEmptyEntries))
End If
End Sub

I have several questions regarding this one.

1. Is it ok to change the ConnectionString property of the manager
to redirect the row to a different file? If not, what more to do?

2. If the new destination file does not yet exist, will it be created for me or will
I get an error? If I do, what to do not to?

3. The most important: What steps to take so that a row is discarded
from the pipeline in the script? I want some rows not to be directed
to the file destination. These are the lines that contain the name
of the file into which the data below belongs.

If you can optimize some steps in the script, then please do so by all means.
Thank you for any comments and the knowledge you kindly agree to share with me.

Script To Change A Connection Manager

Apr 25, 2007

I am looking for code or assistance on how to modify an existing conneciton manger via a script component. I want to have a script change the column sizes for an existing connection manager. How can I get a specific connection manger to change its values.

I have looked at the connection manager, connections, etc classes but I am not certain how to do this as .NET is not my cup of tea.

Thanks.
