Using Local Variable Making The Query Slow

May 28, 2008

Hi,

I am using a local variable to capture datetime and then select records from another table by making use of the above local variable result. But the query is running too slow when I use the local variable

declare @a smalldatetime
select @a=last_run_time from job_status
where job_des='sample'

SELECT * FROM History
WHERE CHANGE_DATE> @a

Instead of the above select statement if I use the below statement it is returning results quickly. Can someone help me in tuning the above query.
SELECT * FROM History
WHERE CHANGE_DATE> '5/23/2008 6:22:00.000 AM '

History table has columns ( case number, change_date, change_desc). I have two indexes defined on the above table one is on case_number and the other on change_date.I tried using force index but still the query is running slow.

will there be any difference if use dynamic sql ?

Assing Dynamic Query Result To A Local Variable....

Jul 9, 2004

Hi:

Is there a way to assign a dynamic query result to a local variable?

declre @sqlString nvarchar(4000),
@minEventDate datetime,
@databaseName varchar(25)
selct @databaseName = 'customer_12345'
(actually, a cursor loop will assign the database name dynamically, here just to simplify the situation)

select @sqlString =
'select ' + @minEventDate + '= (select min(eventDate) from ' + @databaseName + '.dbo.tblABC)'
exec sql_executesql @sqlString
print '@minEventDate: ' + cast(@minEventDate as varchar(19))

Though the select min(eventDate) from customer_12345.dbo.tblABC
returns a date, ex. '02/01/2004 12:35 pm', however, the printed @minEventDate is always with Null value. It mean, the value was never correctly assigned to the local variable.

As an alternate way, I am using temp table to insert it with the query result and then assign to the local variable. Since I have many local variables to try to get the min, max, count for around 10 fields, perfer a way to direct assign to the local variable instead of 10 temp tables.

thanks

Dynamic Query, Local Cursor Variable And Global Cursors

Oct 3, 2006

Hi all.

I am stuck in a bit of a conundrum for quite a while now, and I hope someone here will help me figure this one out.

So, first things first: let me explain what I need to do. I am
designing a web application that will allow users to consult info
available in a SQL2000 database. The user will enter the search
criterea, and hopefully the web page will show matching results.

The problem is the results shown aren't available per se in the DB, I
need to process the data a bit. I decided to do so on the SQL Server
side, though the use of cursors. So, when a user defines his search
criteria, I run a stored procedure that begins by building a dynamic
sql query and creating a cursor for it. I used a global cursor in order
to do so. It looked something like this:

SET @sqlQuery = ... (build the dinamic sql query)

SET @cursorQuery = 'DECLARE myCursor CURSOR GLOBAL FAST_FORWARD FOR ' + @sqlQuery

EXEC @cursorQuery

OPEN myCursor

FETCH NEXT FROM myCursor INTO ...

CLOSE myCursor

DEALLOCATE myCursor

This works fine, if there's only one instance of the
stored procedure running at a time. Should another user connect to the
site and run a search while someone's at it, it'll fail due to the
atempt to create a cursor with the same name.

My first thought was to make the cursor name unique, which led me to:

...

SET @cursorName = 'myCursor' + @uniqueUserID

SET @cursorQuery = 'DECLARE '+ @cursorName + 'CURSOR FAST_FORWARD FOR ' + @sqlQuery

EXEC @cursorQuery

...

The problem with this is that I can't do a FETCH NEXT FROM @cursorName since
@cursorName is a char variable holding the cursor name, and not a
cursor variable. So to enforce this unique name method the only option
I have is to keep creating dynamic sql queries and exucting them. And
this makes the sp a bitch to develop and maintain, and I'm guessing it
doesn't make it very performant.

So I moved on to my second idea: local cursor variables. The problem with
this is that if I create a local cursor variable by executing a dynamic
query, I can't extract it from the EXEC (or sp_executesql) context, as
it offers no output variable.

I guess my concrete questions are:

Is it possible to execute a dynamic sql query and extract a (cursor) variable from it?Is it possible to populate a local cursor variable with a global cursor, by providing the global cursor's name? Can I create a local cursor variable for a dynamic sql query? How?

Anybody sees another way arround this? Thanks in advance,

Carlos

"select Fecha from LogsCargaExcel where Proyecto = " + @[User::Proyecto] +""
As SqlSourceType propety I have "Variable" and inside ResultSet or Parameter Mapping nodes there is nothing.

[Execute SQL Task] Error: Executing the query ""select Fecha from LogsCargaExcel where Proyecto = " + @[User::Proyecto] +""" failed with the following error: "Cannot use empty object or column names. SSIS Script Task Alters Package Variable, But Variable Does Not Change.

Oct 25, 2006

I'm working on an SSIS package that uses a vb.net script to grab some XML from a webservice (I'd explain why I'm not using a web service task here, but I'd just get angry), and I wish to then assign the XML string to a package variable which then gets sent along to a DataFlow Task that contains an XML Source that points at said variable. when I copy the XML string into the variable value in the script, if do a quickwatch on the variable (as in Dts.Variable("MyXML").value) it looks as though the new value has been copied to the variable, but when I step out of that task and look at the package explorer the variable is its original value.

I think the problem is that the dataflow XML source has a lock on the variable and so the script task isn't affecting it. Does anyone have any experience with this kind of problem, or know a workaround?

Differentiate Between Whether Stored Procedure A Is Executed Inside Query Analyzer Or Executed Inside System Application Itself.

May 26, 2008

Just wonder whether is there any indicator or system parameters that can indicate whether stored procedure A is executed inside query analyzer or executed inside application itself so that if execution is done inside query analyzer then i can block it from being executed/retrieve sensitive data from it?

What i'm want to do is to block someone executing stored procedure using query analyzer and retrieve its sensitive results.
Stored procedure A has been granted execution for public user but inside application, it will prompt access denied message if particular user has no rights to use system although knew public user name and password. Because there is second layer of user validation inside system application.

However inside query analyzer, there is no way control execution of stored procedure A it as user knew the public user name and password.

Looking forward for replies from expert here. Thanks in advance.

Note: Hope my explaination here clearly describe my current problems.

What Is The Best Way To Dynamically Change Server Or Database Name Inside A Sp?

Jun 8, 2006

To be clear:

You have a store procedure and inside you make Updates or Inserts against another Server. But that name can change and I dont want to change it manually in everyplace.

Per example:

SELECT *
FROM Himalaya.DBName.dbo.tblUserGroup
WHERE fldUserID = 7300

I have several Selects, Updates and Inserts pointing to that server.

What I can do if I want to change from Himalaya server to another server?

The same with the Database Name.

Calling Variable Inside T-SQL Statement

Oct 4, 2007

Can someone please take a quick look at this and tell me what I'm doing wrong I'm sure it's something simple.  I'm a little new to stored procedures but I've been using SQL and T-SQL for quite some time, I've just always used inline queries with my ASP.  This procedure needs to be run monthly by me or another person I grant access to and will update sales information that our sales staff will be paid commission on.  I need to supply the start date and and end date for the query and it will pull this information from our business system which is hosted remotely by a third party and pull it into our local SQL server where we can run commission reports against it.  (I hope this is enough information you can understand where I'm trying to go with this).  I know my problem right now lies in how I'm trying to call the variable inside of my T-SQL.  Any help is appreciated.  This is an old Unix system and it stores the date as YYYYMMDD as numeric values incase someone wonders why I have dimed my dates as numeric instead of as datetime =)
I'm using a relativity client to create an ODBC connection to the UNIX server and then using a linked server to map a connection in SQL this is the reason for the OpenQuery(<CompanyName>
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO
-- =============================================
-- Author: XXXXXXXXXXXXX
-- Create date: 10/4/2007
-- Description: This proc is designed to pull all CSA
-- part sales from XXXXXX business system and upload them
-- into the local XXXXXXXX Database for commission reporting
-- =============================================CREATE proc usp_CSAPartsSalesUpdate@date1 int, @date2 int
As
INSERT INTO CSAPartsSales ( CSA, CustomerNumber, CustomerName, Location, InvoiceNumber, InvoiceDate, InvoiceAmount )
SELECT SalesRoute, HInvCust, CustOrCompName, HInvLoc, HInvNo, HInvDate, HInvAmt From OpenQuery(<CompanyName>, 'Select CPBASC_All.SalesRoute, PMINVHST.HInvCust, CPBASC_All.CustOrCompName, PMINVHST.HInvLoc, PMINVHST.HInvNo, PMINVHST.HInvDate, PMINVHST.HInvAmtFROM PMINVHST INNER JOIN CPBASC_All ON PMINVHST.HInvCust = CPBASC_All.CustomerNo
WHERE (((PMINVHST.HInvAmt)<>0) AND ((PMINVHST.HInvDate)>=''' + @date1 + ''' And (PMINVHST.HInvDate)<=''' + @date2 + ''') AND ((Trim([CPBASC_All].[SalesRoute]))<>'''' And (Trim([CPBASC_All].[SalesRoute]))<>''000''))')

In this example date1 will be equal to 20070901 and date2 will be equal to 20070930 so I can pull all CSA sales for the month of September.
This is the error message I get when I try to create the proc:
Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Procedure usp_CSAPartsSalesUpdate, Line 17
Incorrect syntax near '+'.

Problem With A Local Variable

Dec 19, 2001

Hello everybody,

Here I have two tables. Let's call them A and B.

A contains the folowing data: (address of persons)

PostCode Street Number CdeTour
-------- ------ ------ -------
31000 Well. 0025 NULL
31000 Well. 0050 NULL
31000 Wash. 0010 NULL

B contains the folowing data:

PostCode Street FirstEven LastEven FirstOdd LastOdd CdeTour
-------- ------ --------- -------- -------- ------- -------
31000 Well. 0002 0040 0043 0073 100
31000 Well. 0042 0084 0001 0041 200
31000 Wash. 0002 0050 0001 0049 100

* My problem is that I want to update the field A.CdeTour depending on the data present in B.

Let's take the first line from the table A: the number of the street 'well.' is '25', and '25' is odd and between '1' and '41' which meens that I should update my field A.CdeTour should be set to '100' (B.CdeTour).
Let's take another example, so in the second line: the street is still 'well.' but here the number is '50'. '50' is even and between '42' and '84' so the field A.CdeTour should be set to '200' (B.CdeTour).

Here I wrote a query, which doesn't work properly:

DECLARE @Num VARCHAR(4)
UPDATE A
SET @Num = Number, CodeTournee=
CASE WHEN @Num % 2 = 0 THEN(
-- even number of street
SELECT CdeTour
FROM B
WHERE @Num BETWEEN FirstEven AND LastEven
AND A.PostCode = B.PostCode
AND A.Street = B.Street
)ELSE(
-- odd number of street
SELECT CdeTour
FROM B
WHERE @Num BETWEEN FirstOdd AND LastOdd
AND A.PostCode = B.PostCode
AND A.Street = B.Street
)END
FROM A, B

The query runs but the problem is that it doesn't update the field, because it doesn't interpret @num by its value.

In fact, if instead of @num, I hard-code a value it works
... WHERE '0025' BETWEEN FirstOdd AND LastOdd ...

Can someone help me???? I would be very pleased, if someones could give me another way of doing it or a trick in order to avoid this problem.

Thanks in advance.

Why does the local variables in the first code segment slow down the overall execution of the procedure?
Dont mind the logic why I have them there are only testing som things out.

If i declare two variables the same way:
DECLARE @v INT
SET @v = 100

When I use it in a WHERE CLAUSE:
...WHERE [V] BETWEEN @v AND @x)
Is there any different then
...WHERE [V] BETWEEN 100 AND 200)

Cant figure this out, why does it hurt the performance so bad? As a C# guy its the same thing ?

Thanks in advance
/Johan

Concatenate Local Variable

Jun 17, 2008

Hi guys,

I have a cursor that loops over a table and I use a local variable to append the column data. However when I try to print this variable, it comes as empty!

The code is

declare @testVar varchar(max)
<cursor loop begins>
set @testVar = @testVar + ',' + @SomeColName
<cursor loop ends>

print 'Value: ' + @testVar

I can't understand why the @testVar is empty, since the @SomeColName has a value in every iteration.

Thanks!

Change Authentication Method In A Local Database File

Apr 13, 2007

I have made a small asp.net project which uses a local database file as a part of the project. The project is running fine om my local machine, but when I upload it to the remote server, the login fails for the server.

I suspect this is can be solved by using sqlserver authentication. But I have now spent a lot of time trying to configure the database file to use this authentication mode. As I see it there are three possible solutions to the problem.

use management studio express to configure the local mdf file (Ecxept that I cant find out how to connect to the mdf-file) and from here change the authentication method to sqlserver authentication.
use Visual Web developer to change the authentication method (but how???)
make the windows authentication work on the server (this would probably require that mannamgement studio express connects to the remote database. (Same problem as no 1)

Help will be higly appreciated.
