Change Tab/linefeed To Single Space

Feb 1, 2008

How do I change a tab (char(9)), newline char (char(10) ) or carriage return (char(13)) in my string into a single space character? This is when I select from a table, the value should have any linefeed or tab converted to space.

Thanks in advance..

Mutilple Space Gets Converted To Single Space In Report Viewer Control

Feb 23, 2007

I am generating a Report from Sql Data Source in Sql Server 2005 and viewing the Report in Report viewer control of Visual Studio 2005.
The data in the Data Source contains string with multiple spaces (for example €œ Test String €œ) but when they get rendered in Report viewer control, multiple spaces gets converted to single space €? Test String €œ.

I tried following solutions
1) Replacing spaces with €œ €?
2) Inserting <pre> tag before the string and </pre> tag after the string (Also tried &lt;Pre&gt; instead of <pre>)

But in all the cases result is same. The Report Viewer control is showing €œ&nbsp€? instead of space and €œ<Pre>€? tag instead of preserving spaces.

Please provide me a solution so that spaces can be preserved in Report Viewer.

Replacing Multiple Spaces With A Single Space

May 21, 2008

I have records where there are multiple spaces between items of text. I would like to strip out all the excess spaces characters. To that end I have written to separate functions (both are listed below) neither of which I would imagine will be particularly efficient. The first uses an int table and the second a while loop. I am presently ignoring the leading and trailing space issue as this can easily be recitfied with LTRIM and RTRIM. However, I would be keen to know if there is a better way of achieving a similar result.

CREATE FUNCTION dbo.StripAdditionalSpaces (@Input varchar(1000))
RETURNS varchar(1000)
AS
BEGIN
DECLARE @Changed int, @Output varchar(1000)
SELECT @Output = ''
DECLARE @String TABLE ([Output] varchar(1000))
INSERT INTO @String ([Output]) VALUES (@Input)

SELECT @Output = @Output + SUBSTRING([Output], i1.Position, 1)
FROM @String
LEFT JOIN dbo.Ints i1
ON SUBSTRING([Output], i1.Position, 1) <> ' '
or ISNULL(SUBSTRING([Output], i1.Position - 1, 1), '') <> ' '
RETURN @Output
END
GO
CREATE FUNCTION dbo.StripAdditionalSpaces2 (@Input varchar(1000))
RETURNS varchar(1000)
AS
BEGIN
DECLARE @Output varchar(1000)
SELECT @Output = @Input

WHILE @Output LIKE '% %'
BEGIN
SELECT @Output = REPLACE(@Output, ' ' , ' ')
END
RETURN @Output
END
GO

Tansact SQL - Linefeed Characters In Varchar Columns

May 22, 2008

This is obviously a radical idea but some actually DO want to store linefeeds in varchar columns.

In MySQL I can escape difficult characters for example

INSERT INTO sometable(address) VALUES("23 SomeRoad
SomeTown
SomeCounty");

Does anyone know how to do this in Transact SQL?

Trim - Cannot Change Source Of Data To Strip Out Special Chars / White Space?

Feb 12, 2015

I have some sql below..

SELECT
t.Doctor, t.LedgerAmount, t.TransactionDate,
ISNULL(lg.LedgerGrpDesc, 'No Sales Group') AS LedgerGroup
FROM
Transactions t
LEFT OUTER JOIN LedgerGroups lg ON t.LedgerDescription = lg.dbLedgerDesc

[Code] .....

My problem is that the data in t.LedgerDescription sometimes now has either leading/trailing white space or more likely special chars so the join against lg.dbLedgerDesc doesn't always work.

I can't change the source of the data to strip out special chars/white space so am stuck on how to deal with it.

I tried using LTRIM & RTRIM in the where clause but this doesn't seem to have had any effect...

LEFT OUTER JOIN LedgerGroups lg ON LTRIM(RTRIM(t.LedgerDescription)) = lg.dbLedgerDesc

SQL Server 2008 :: Database In Single-user Mode / How To Change It Programmatically

Mar 10, 2015

Recently we had multiple production failures because one database was in single-user mode. I am trying to recreate this scenario to write a script that will kick out that connection that was holding database in single-user.In SSMS window 1 I run the following code:

use master
go
alter database test
set single_user
with rollback immediate

[code]....

Yes, it shows one record, but the database name is master, not test. And indeed, I run it from the context of master. Also tried sp_who, sp_who2, sys.dm_exec_requests - nothing works. For dm_exec_requests it shows nothing because it does not run at the current moment.Any other solutions to catch this SPID with a script?

Results Produce A Single Record Based Off Of Parameters. Want To Change It So It Returns Multiple Records.

Dec 20, 2007

I have a query that will return one record as its results if you provide two variables: @login and @record_date. This works great if you only want one result. However, now what I want to do is not provide those variables and get the result set back for each login and record_date combination. The hitch is that there are several other variables that are built off of the two that are supplied. Here is the query:

DECLARE @login char(20), /*This sets the rep for the query.*/
@record_date datetime, /*This is the date that we want to run this for.*/
@RWPY decimal(18,2), /*This is the required wins per year.*/
@OCPW decimal(18,2), /*This is the opportunities closed per week.*/
@OACW decimal(18,2), /*This is opportunities advanced to close per week.*/
@TOC decimal(18,2), /*This is the total number of opportunities in close.*/
@OANW decimal(18,2), /*This is opportunities advanced to negotiate per week.*/
@TON decimal(18,2), /*This is the total number of opportunities in negotiate.*/
@OADW decimal(18,2), /*This is the opportunities advanced to demonstrate per week*/
@TOD decimal(18,2), /*This is the total number of opportunities in demonstrate.*/
@OAIW decimal(18,2), /*This is the opportunities advanced to interview per week.*/
@TOI decimal(18,2), /*This is the total number of opportunities in interview.*/
@OCW decimal(18,2), /*This is the opportunities created per week.*/
@TOA decimal(18,2) /*This is the total number of opportunities in approach.*/

Change Text Color In A Single Text Box

Nov 27, 2007

I have a report I am creating in sql reporting services 2005 and what I am trying to do is have a single text box with multiple lines of data format each item in the textbox to specific parameters but I have not been able to figure it out. I tried to format my data on the sql side so that it cam out as follows:

tried
Monday, Nov. 26, 2007
"Color = Blue FontWeight = Bold " & John Doe & CHAR(9) & "Color = Red FontWeight = Normal " & Jane Smith & CHAR(9) & "Color = Black FontWeight = Bold" John Roberts
This did not work

so then I tried
Monday, Nov. 26, 2007
"FontColor = Blue FontWeight = Bold " & John Doe & CHAR(9) & "FontColor = Red FontWeight = Normal " & Jane Smith & CHAR(9) & "FontColor = Black FontWeight = Bold" John Roberts

Still did not work
What my end result needs to be in a single text box...

If anyone has the answer thanks ahead of time.

Trans Log-&>space Allocated 27GB, Space Used 100MB

Mar 2, 2005

Hi.. I was doing a good maintenance on my DB and my trans log LDF keep growing until 30GB but my DB data file MDF is only 2GB. I found the two following method to reduce my log size.

Method 1: I used veritas to backup log file with truncate
Method 2: I used the shrink database option in Enterprises manager to shrink it (file chosen=log , use default option)

After doing that, I found my LDF log file is still about the same size=27GB but when I see clearly, from the shrink database windows, the log spaced used reduced to only 100MB, the allocation log space is still 27GB. Why? How to make the LDF smaller to be the around the same size as the space used 100MB?

Automatically grow file are filled
file growth by percent = 5%
maximum file size - restrict filegrowth = 3700 MB (we can't reduce it !)

Thank you for your precious help !

DB Engine :: Collation Change And DDL Change In Same Script

Nov 18, 2015

We ran into weird/interesting issue with below details.

Version: Microsoft SQL Server 2012 (SP1) - 11.0.3000.0 (X64) Standard Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.2 <X64> (Build 9200):

We are using SQLCMD to run DDL script on our product database in below order. That script has below content.

step # 1 - database collation change (case -sensitive) statement as very first statement of the script
step # 2 - Actual DDL SQL statements
step # 3 - database collation change back to original (case insensitive)

When we execute all above 3 steps in single script using SQLCMD on our test_server#1 , it is successful but when same is being implemented on test_ server#2 , it is failing. We ensured that there is no other user accessing the db and setting on both the server are all default/basic. Separating out all 3 steps in 3 different script working fine. This is only problem when we combine them into single script and fire it using SQLCMD. If it is something related to session/transaction then we should hit same issue on our test_server#1 server as well but that is not the case.test_server#1 and test_server#2 has exact same database/data, just two different physical machine & SQL Server instance.

Space Used

Feb 28, 2001

I need to create a proc. which would send a warning via xp_sendmail when the database space gets within 10% of allocated space. I have written one which uses sp_spaceused however this proc requires DBCC udateusage to be run in order to get accurate results. This would work but i don't know how quickly the data returned by sp_spaceused becomes corrupt therefore how often DBCC should be run. I ran DBCC on our main production server and it took a considerable amount of time. Basically I am looking for another way to do this without using sp_spaceused. Any ideas

Space Used

May 5, 2003

The command sp_spaceused @updateusage = true
returns following result. How do I have to calculate the single values that it gives me an equation:
database size = data size plus reserved space minus etc.
Somehow it is not clear to me how it is split up.

Thank you

Not Enough Space

Sep 29, 1999

I have a 12 GB database growing at 25 MB daily. The server will soon run out of space, 3 GB left. I cannot buy a new server or new RAID subsystems at once, and want to prevent the server being filled up fast.

What are the best ways? Can you share with me some of your thougts or comment on the following:
1) Archive old data in many tables across servers -
Can SQL Server do it directly across server or we need to select into temp database and back it up to tape or using bcp out and in?
2) Put the >9Gb disk dump to another server. The daily disk dump takes up a lot of space.
3) Dump to the tape directly, saving 9 GB disk space of dump device.
4) ? ?
