Changing Column Data Type
Nov 23, 2007
I want to change a column's data type from bit to int. There are data in the table already. I'm wondering if it is save/correct way to issue the following command to change the data type for that column.ALTER TABLE database_table
ALTER COLUMN my_bit_column INT;
Thanks.

Use databases a bit, but new to SQL Server. We just want to change a column of existing SQL Server 2005 data from a string data type to one of the UNiCODE data types, such as DT_WSTR or DT.NTEXT (such as one can use for various data mining tasks, etc.). It seems to do this one needs to "the data conversion transformation editor". To use that one has to have a package and a project?
Does any one have a full script or set of steps to do the full set of steps for what should be a simple task? This would be a great example for BOL, but each atomistic bit of BOL refers to another, and one gets lost in the circle when a complete example is needed for fundamantal housekeeping tasks.

Platform: SQL 2000
A SQL table has a field named "pay-day" with Char(8) data type.
I tried to change its data type to datetime but only with an error message like this. I did right-click the table and tried to modify a data type.
- Unable to modify table.
The conversion of a char data type to a datetime data type resulted in an out-of-range datetime value.
The statement has been terminated.

Hello.
i have a database with 300 tables. All the data types of the fields of my tables are custom. Ex. IFGint:int and stuff like that.
I want to know how can i through a stored procedure, change in batch mode all the fields of my tables. I don't want to modify by hand everytable. It's a lot of work and i think that maybe there might be a way for this programatically.
thanks in advance

Hi GuysWonder if you could help me.Basically I produce an accounts package that uses a SQL 2000 DB as theRDBMS. I always instruct users to login as 'sa' and the relevantpassword when doing an update to my program, as sometimes I need to dodatabase changes for new stuff.Found that one of my users has not only logged in with their loginname (in this case Edward), but have also made this login a 'db owner'so that when I created 2 new user-defined data types they belong toEdward rather than dbo.This must have happened a long time ago, but now that they want tomove Edward round the roles and/or delete him from a copy of thedatabase that they have, they can't because he's the owner of theseuser-defined types.This brings me to the reason for my post, how can I change the ownerfrom Edward to dbo for these data types? I found an article ontechnet of how to do this, but when it suggests changing myuser-defined type to standard format it doesn't seem to work.Any ideas?RgdsRobbie

I am trying to use the Bulk Insert Task to load from a csv file. My final column is a bit that is nullable. My file is an ID column that is int, a date column that is mm/dd/yyy, then 20 columns that are real, and a final column that is bit. I've tried various combinations of codepage and datafiletype on my task component. When I have RAW with Char, I get the error included below. If I change to RAW/Native or codepage 1252, I don't have an issue with the bit; however, errors start generating on the ID and date columns.
I have tried various data type settings on my flat file connection, too. I have tried DT_BOOL and the integer datatypes. Nothing seems to work.
I hope someone can help me work through this.
Thanks in advance,

Hi,
I was wondering how to modify a column's properties, like its datatype or length.
I know I'm supposed to do something like this:
ALTER TABLE MyTable ALTER COLUMN MyColumn int(20)
My main concern is, what will the database do to all the data in the column, if the column used to be, say nvarchar(50)? Will I lose the data in the column if I change the datatype? And what if I had data in this column that was longer than 20 characters? Will the data now be truncated? What can I do to make sure that nothing happens to the data once I change the datatype?
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! =)

Hi,
I'm trying to figure out the best way to determine the data_type of a column, given the table name and column name. Once I've determined it's a charactor string I can get the length using COL_LENGTH, but I can't fund a command or procedure that will return the data type.
Thank you.

On sqlserver 2000 transactional replication:
How would I best go about changing a published table's column from smallint to int? I could not find anything about it in BOL or MS.com. I do not think EM/Replication Properties allows the change. I suspect I have to run "Alter Table/Column" on the Publisher and each Subscriber the old-fashioned way. Is that true?
Thanks!

Hi All,
I am using SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition fully patched. Database is in Simple Recovery mode.
I need to change a column's data type from "int(4)" to "smallint(2)". I know for sure that there will be no data (precision) lost, because I know the possible values that this column could have.
My problem is that the table I am dealing with has 600,000,000 records in it. I dropped all indexes before I tried to alter the table. But still it is taking forever and filling up my 280GB disk with transaction log file.
I know that in Oracle, if I want I can turn off logging and do these kind of modifications relatively faster.
I was wondering if there is a way of disabling logging before running this alter command.
What is the best practice to handle a situation of this sort?
I appreciate your help.
Thanks in advance,
Sinan Topuz

Hi,
I have a webform with a drop-down listbox, binded to a table and a GridView, binded to another table. My goal is when I select a value (country in my case) in the drop-down listbox to change what is shown in the GridView, based on the ID that I get from the drop-down listbox.
Here is the code (the important parts...):
Select a Country : <asp:DropDownList ID="CountriesDropDownList" runat="server" DataSourceID="SqlDataSource2" DataTextField="Name" DataValueField="CountryID" Width="220px" AutoPostBack="True">
</asp:DropDownList>
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource2" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:MyConnectionString %>"
SelectCommand="SELECT [CountryID], [Name] FROM [DS_Country]">
</asp:SqlDataSource>
<asp:GridView ID="ProvincesGridView" runat="server" AllowPaging="True" AllowSorting="True" AutoGenerateColumns="False" DataKeyNames="ProvinceID,CountryID,Name,ShortName,Description" DataSourceID="SqlDataSource1" BackColor="White" BorderColor="#E7E7FF" BorderStyle="None" BorderWidth="1px" CellPadding="3" HorizontalAlign="Left" >
<Columns>
..............................
</Columns>
</asp:GridView>
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:DineSelectConnectionString %>"
DeleteCommand="DELETE FROM DS_Province WHERE ProvinceID=@ProvinceID"
SelectCommand="SELECT ProvinceID,CountryID,Name,ShortName,Description FROM DS_Province WHERE CountryID=@ddlCountryID"
UpdateCommand="UPDATE DS_Province SET CountryID=@CountryID,Name=@Name,ShortName=@ShortName,Description=@Description WHERE ProvinceID=@ddlCountryID"
InsertCommand="INSERT INTO DS_Province (CountryID,Name,ShortName,Description) VALUES (@CountryID,@Name,@ShortName,@Description)">
<SelectParameters>
<asp:ControlParameter Name="ddlCountryID" ControlID="CountriesDropDownList" PropertyName="DataValueField" />
</SelectParameters>
</asp:SqlDataSource>
When I run it I get this error "Syntax error converting the nvarchar value 'CountryID' to a column of data type int.". If I specify the Type="Int" in <asp:ControlParameter>..</> I get "Input string was not in a correct format. "
This is supposed to be easy, but I can't make it work ! Any suggestions will be more than welcome.
Thanks.
