Changing Column Order In A Table

Jul 20, 2005

This subject has been posted several times, but I haven't seen a good
answer.

Problem:
I want to change the order of the columns in a table using T-SQL only.

Explanation:
After running your code, I want to see the following table...

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[TableName] (
[First_Column] [int] NULL ,
[Second_Column] [varchar] (20) NULL
) ON [PRIMARY]

look like this...

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[TableName] (
[Second_Column] [varchar] (20) NULL ,
[First_Column] [int] NULL
) ON [PRIMARY]

Limitations:
Don't post if your post would fall in the following categories:
1. If you don't think it can be done
2. If you think Enterprise Manager is the only way to do this
3. If you think I should just change the order of my Select
statements
4. If you want to state that order column doesn't matter in a
relational database
5. If you want to ask me why I want to do this

Wish:
Hopefully the answer WON'T involve creating a brand new table, moving
the data from old to new, dropping the old table, then renaming the
new table to the old name. Yes, I can do that. The table I'm working
with is extremely huge -- I don't want to do the data juggling.

Thanks in advance!

SSIS Changing Column Order During Transformation

May 16, 2006

First let me say, I really can't believe this chain of events myself--and they are happening to me.

I am upgrading several DTS packages to SSIS on what will be my new production server. These packages create tables, export them to a flat file, and ftp them off to other locations.

What is happening (on the SSIS side) is that the OLE DB Source is reordering some of the columns on its own (moving them to the end of the table/file. Then when my pickup/load routines run, the data is out of place and they fail.

Can anyone please explain what is happening here with the mapping. I have evaluated the table and the columns are in the order that I expect. When I preview the source table in the OLE DB Source Editor the columns are in the correct order/alignment, but when them in the OLE DB Source Editor --Columns section within BIDS the order is changed arbitrarily.

I have been somewhat successful (2 out of 3) in being able to re-map the data, but this last table just doesn't want to change.

Thanks in advance for any help and/or information you can provide

Integration Services :: Import Flat File Which Has Changing Column Order Using SSIS?

Jul 2, 2015

I have a flat with few columns

FirstName, lastName, Address
f1,l1,a1
f2,l2,a2

I build my SSIS package based on the above file. But now i receive files with different columns order let say

lastName,FirstNamr,Address
l1,f1,a1
L2,f2,a2
or
Address,FirstName,LastName
a1,f1,l1
a2,f2,l2

every time i receive multiple files in different order and i have to remap all my mappings. These are just a few columns and i have like 20 columns and the order can potentially change any time. so every time i have build new packages remap them etc.

through normal c# code it pretty easy. I tried to add script here but the script also needs a source and mapping so there is also a mapping issue. Is there a better way to do this.

Changing Table Column Size

Mar 2, 2004

I'm new to mssql.

I need to change the size of a column of a table from char(255) to char(500). I used the line:

alter table table_name alter column column_name char(500)

When I run that command, I get a message that it was sucessful. However, when I try to enter data into the changed column, the number of characters I can enter is still 255. I check the information schema for the column and the 'character_maximum_length' field is 500.

What is the problem here? Is the maximum allowable length for char 255? How can I get a column to have 500 characters?

Exporting A Table With Changing Column Names To An Excel File

Oct 25, 2006

I'm trying to write an SSIS package that exports a table that has changing column names to an excel file. The column names change due to the fact that the table is created by a pivot daily. the only thing I'm missing is the ability to dynamically map the tables' columns to the excel destination. Is this possible?

I read in another thread that
"It is not possible to create packages or new objects within packages using SSIS."
I also read in the books online that "The input and the input columns of the Excel destination have no custom
properties." To me this means that I cannot programmatically create or remove columns in the excel destination. Please tell me I'm wrong.
So, to summarize my research so far. In writing an SSIS package, I cannot programmatically create a new excel destination object and I can't manipulate an existing one. I hope I'm wrong. Can anyone help me? (and please correct any wrong assumptions I may have stated)

Mass Table Structure Change For Column Order

Feb 26, 2008

Say you have an existing populated SQL 2005 database, with 700+ tables, and you want to just change the order of the columns inside every table. Short of manually building conversion scripts, anyone know an automated way to do this? I was thinking thru ways to do them all in one shot, and have tools like Erwin and DbGhost that could be used also. Basically moving some standard audit columns from the end of the tables to just after the PK columns.

Adding An Auto-increment Column To Existing Table With A Particular Order

Oct 19, 2005

Hello all,I'm using SS2K on W2k.I'v got a table say, humm, "Orders" with two fields in the PK:OrderDate and CustomerID. I would like to add an "ID" column whichwould be auto-increment (and would be the new PK). So my question is:How could I add an auto-increment column to a table and make it createits values in a particular order (sort by OrderDate then CustomerIDhere)? In the real situation, the table I want to modify has around 500krecords and the PK has 5 fields and I want to sort on three of them. Thanks for you helpYannick

Column Order/presentation In Virtual Table (result Set From Viewor UDF)

Sep 1, 2006

I was just messing around with some ad hoc views and table returningUDFs today so I could look at and print out data from a small tableand noticed something strange. If I stick my select statement into a View the columns are returned inthe order I specify in the SELECT, but if the same statement is in a UDF(so I can specify a parameter), the columns are not returned in theorder specified in statement.I know that relations don't have a specified column order, but it was myunderstanding that a SELECT statement could be used to define how youwant your data presented. Slowly Changing Dimension Wizard Doesn't Display Destination Table Primary Key Column

Feb 22, 2006

I have added a Slowly Changing Dimension transformation to an SSIS package and have launched the Wizard to edit it.  After selecting the source (a SQL Server 2005 instance), if I select a very large table (9+ million rows), I'm encountering two strange behaviors:
1. The wizard hangs for several minutes before displaying the columns from that table.
2. The wizard does not display the primary key column.  This, of course, is the column I want to designate as the "business key", but can't because it's not displayed.
I know this is more like a fact table than a dimension, but this is not a data warehouse.  This is just a very large table, and I need to update a field in certain records based on the contents of a source text file.  Is there another transformation I should use to perform updates?

Changing Order By Clause On The Fly

Jun 26, 2000

I'm using a Case statement to change an Order By clause on the fly, eg

ORDER BY case when @SortBy = 1 then s.ITEM_NAME
when @SortBy = 2 then s.ITEM_ID
when @SortBy = 3 then s.ITEM_SIZE
end

The numeric columns work fine but when @SortBy = 1, I get the following message when I try to run the sp:

Server: Msg 8114, Level 16, State 5, Procedure usp_CML_SAO_RptPresLvl, Line 95
Error converting data type varchar to numeric.

ITEM_NAME is a varchar(40) containing alphanumeric characters; ITEM_ID is a numeric(8,0) & ITEM_SIZE is a varchar(5) containing numeric characters.

Is there some rule preventing me to dynamically change the Order By if using a alphanumeric characters?
Thanks for any help you can offer

Default Sort Order When Order By Column Value Are All The Same

Hi,
We got a problem.
supposing we have a table like this:

CREATE TABLE a (
aId int IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
aName string2 NOT NULL
)
go
ALTER TABLE a ADD
CONSTRAINT PK_a PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED (aId)

9Bank of abcde
8Bank of abcde
7Bank of abcde
6Bank of abcde
5Bank of abcde
4Bank of abcde

According to this result, user see the first 5 records with id 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 in page 1, but when he tries to view page 2, he still see the records with id 6, 5, 4, 3, 2. This is not correct for users.

Of course we can add order by aid also, but there are tons of sqls like this, we can't update our application in one shot.

So I ask for your advice here, is there any settings can tell the db use default sort order when the order by column value are the same? Or is there any other solution to resolve this problem in one shot?

Analysis :: Order Of Rows In Tabular Table Not In Same Order Data Was Retrieved?

May 19, 2015

I never paid much attention to this before but I noticed this today in a new table I was creating.

For tables defined in the tabular model the table properties have something like SELECT Blah FROM TableName ORDER BY Blah Then in the tabular model the table's data is in the same order it was ordered by in the data source for the table.

I have a date table I setup and I noticed it is NOT respecting the sort order.

I have it sorted by DateID which sorts with the oldest date first and newest date as last row. However, the table that is imported and stored in the data model is not in that order.

I can of course manually sort the rows in BIDS/DataTools, but I find this discrepancy odd.

Would this have negative impacts on the EARLIER function for example if the data rows are not in the order specified?
