Changing Data Type To The Fields Of My Tables.

Nov 21, 2006

Hello.

i have a database with 300 tables. All the data types of the fields of my tables are custom. Ex. IFGint:int and stuff like that.

I want to know how can i through a stored procedure, change in batch mode all the fields of my tables. I don't want to modify by hand everytable. It's a lot of work and i think that maybe there might be a way for this programatically.

thanks in advance

Changing Data Type

May 21, 2006

Use databases a bit, but new to SQL Server. We just want to change a column of existing SQL Server 2005 data from a string data type to one of the UNiCODE data types, such as DT_WSTR or DT.NTEXT (such as one can use for various data mining tasks, etc.). It seems to do this one needs to "the data conversion transformation editor". To use that one has to have a package and a project?

Does any one have a full script or set of steps to do the full set of steps for what should be a simple task? This would be a great example for BOL, but each atomistic bit of BOL refers to another, and one gets lost in the circle when a complete example is needed for fundamantal housekeeping tasks.

Changing The Owner Of A User-defined Data Type

Jul 20, 2005

Hi GuysWonder if you could help me.Basically I produce an accounts package that uses a SQL 2000 DB as theRDBMS. I always instruct users to login as 'sa' and the relevantpassword when doing an update to my program, as sometimes I need to dodatabase changes for new stuff.Found that one of my users has not only logged in with their loginname (in this case Edward), but have also made this login a 'db owner'so that when I created 2 new user-defined data types they belong toEdward rather than dbo. This must have happened a long time ago, but now that they want tomove Edward round the roles and/or delete him from a copy of thedatabase that they have, they can't because he's the owner of theseuser-defined types. This brings me to the reason for my post, how can I change the ownerfrom Edward to dbo for these data types? I found an article ontechnet of how to do this, but when it suggests changing myuser-defined type to standard format it doesn't seem to work.Any ideas?RgdsRobbie

SQL Server 2008 :: Data Type Of Calculated Fields

Aug 10, 2015

I'm using the SQL below to work out recruitment figures. The query works well, but I now need to build this query into a DotNet application as a webpage. I therefore need to declare and manipulate the values such as 'Total', 'Jan' to 'Dec' and 'YearRecruited' in order to write these values into my chosen data control. I therefore need to know the datatypes of these calculated values.

Total I think is straightforward as DNAScreeningID is an int datatype. But what about the others?

SELECT YEAR(SamplingDate) AS YearRecruited,

COUNT(CASE WHEN month(SamplingDate) = 1 THEN DNAScreeningID END) AS 'Jan',
COUNT(CASE WHEN month(SamplingDate) = 2 THEN DNAScreeningID END) AS 'Feb',
COUNT(CASE WHEN month(SamplingDate) = 3 THEN DNAScreeningID END) AS 'Mar',
COUNT(CASE WHEN month(SamplingDate) = 4 THEN DNAScreeningID END) AS 'Apr',

Archiving Data From Some Tables - Timestamp Data Type?

Aug 21, 2015

I'm working on archiving data from some tables. I've duplicated the data structure, with the exception of not including the IDENTITY specifier on INT columns, so that the archive table will keep the value that was generated in the original table. This is all going well, until I tried to copy the data over where the column is specified as a timestamp data type. I've looked this up and found a couple of things. First, documentation for SQL 2000 says,

Timestamp is a data type that exposes automatically generated binary numbers, which are guaranteed to be unique within a database. Timestamp is used typically as a mechanism for version-stamping table rows. The storage size is 8 bytes.

And then documentation for the soon to be released SQL 2016 on the rowversion data type says,

The timestamp syntax is deprecated. This feature will be removed in a future version of Microsoft SQL Server. Avoid using this feature in new development work, and plan to modify applications that currently use this feature.

and

Is a data type that exposes automatically generated, unique binary numbers within a database. rowversion is generally used as a mechanism for version-stamping table rows. The storage size is 8 bytes. The rowversion data type is just an incrementing number and does not preserve a date or a time.

OK, I've read the descriptions, but I don't get it. Why have a timestamp/rowversion data type?

Help Needed On How To Update Individual Fields When Importing Data Into Tables

Sep 12, 2001

Help -
I need to import data into an existing table. Most import rows were unique, so I had no problem using DTS and appending. However, some import rows match existing rows except for one column/field that contains updated/new data, and I have to either replace the entire row with the imported row, or replace the individual field with the new data. How do I do that when there are many rows to import? It would take forever typing in all the data using UPDATE. Thanks in advance for your help!

P.s. No rounding problem is expected as data is already in whole numbers.

Change Data Type In Many Tables In One Go

May 14, 2008

Hi.

I have tables (they are empty and there are no constraints) with columns typed as varchar. In a database I want to change the type of all the varchar columns in all the tables from varchar to nvarchar. What's the best way to do it? Can you suggest code?

I know that to get all the relevant columns I would issue a query like this

select *
from information_schema.columns
where data_type = 'varchar'

Then I would use a cursor... And that's exactly what I would not like to do. Is there any other way?

Thanx.

Using Inserted / Deleted Tables With Text / NText / Image Data Type

Oct 6, 2004

Hi folks,

Table:

a int,
b int,
c int,
d text

I need to change my AFTER - Trigger from this (example!):

select * into #ins from inserted

to something like

select *(without Text / nText / image -columns) into #ins from inserted.

So I tried to build a string like this: (using INFORMATIONSCHEMES)

select @sql = 'select a,b,c into #ins from inserted'
exec(@sql)

a,b,c are not of Text, nText or Image datatype.

After executing the trigger, I get an error, that inserted is unknown.

Does anyone know how to solve this ?

Thx.

2 mike 4 5 6 6
3 manager 4 5 6 6
4 vicepres 5 6 6 6
5 ceo 6 6 6 6
6 board 6 6 6 6

the basic pattern is... a user has approvers, and those approvers have approvers as well... i have 4 columns of approvers.. and if my first approver is the manager, then my second approver will be the managers approver and my third approver will be the managers approver's approver and so on..

on my actual page, i have select fields for the app, app2, app3, app4 and i need it so that when i change the very first app, it'll automatically update app2, app3, and app4

any ideas how i would do this? im pretty new to sql but im thinking i would use some type of join?

Type I Slowly Changing Dimension

May 16, 2008

I have a Type I SCD situation, ie, insert if new (by checking the business ID) and update if any attributes for a given business ID has changed.

The way I usually do this, (and I believe this is how most people do it), is I use a LOOKUP TASK to determine if the business ID exsist in the target table. If it doesn't then I insert. If the business ID exists, then I bring back the associated attributes and use a CONDITIONAL SPLIT TASK to compare if any of the incoming attributes are different. If there are changes, then update.

In doing this comparision, I often run into situations where I end up comparing a NULL value to something, which does not result in FALSE, but a NULL result. To get around this, I first check for NULLs and convert them into something valid before I do the comparision, but this results in a messy comparison expression, especially if I have to compare a lot of attributes.

So, how do you guys handle this?

As an alternative, I am looking into the SLOWLY CHANGING DIMENSION TASK, which I also have some questions on, but I would like to first address the above. Thank you.

Slowly Changing Dimension.. Type 1.5

Aug 28, 2006

The warehouse I am writing packages for has sort of a "Type 1.5" design for most of its DIMs that I am trying to get to work with the slowly changing dimension object.

Basically it should behave like a type 1 with updates in place BUT send the old prior rows/values to an "archive" server to hold the historical data. Unlike a Type 2 this data will not be used for any processes - but it needs to be kept for historical reseach and auditing.

Any ideas to easily do with the SCD wizard? I thought using the wizard as a type 1 and then after the wizard is done attaching the "Historical Attribute Inserts Output" to the archive db/table would do the trick but that output from the SCD object never has data. I could manually do it with a lookup and so forth but I thought I'd check in here first to see if I am just overlooking something with the SCD object.

Converting A Data Type Double To A Type Float Using A Data Adapter && SSCE 3.5

Feb 13, 2008

Hi,

I can populate a dataTable with type double (C#) of say '1055.01' however when I save these to the CE3.5 database using a float(CE3.5) I lose the decimal portion. The 'offending' code is:

this.court0TableAdapter1.Update(this.mycourtsDataSet1.Court0);

this.mycourtsDataSet1.AcceptChanges();

this.court0TableAdapter1.Fill(this.mycourtsDataSet1.Court0);

This did not happen with VS2005/CE3.01.

I have tried changing all references to decimal (or money in CE3.5) without luck.

I'm beginning to think that string may be the way to go!!!!!!!

Can someone shed some light on my problem.

Thanks,

Later:

It's necessary to update the datatable adapter as the 3.01 and 3.5 CE are not compatible.

ETL For Type 2 Slowly Changing Hierarchical Dimensions

May 2, 2008

Hi,

I would like to know if there is an easy way to load Hierarchical Dimensions with Type 2 using SSIS ( or in general).

Here is my example:

There is a Hierarchy Product Group <- Product Class <- Product. (In words, Product rolls up to Product Class and Product Class Rolls up to Product Group). Say Product Group is Type 1 and the other two are Type 2. Every night, I receive a feed for each of these tables only if the record is new or a change to an existing record.

Now, when a Product Class Record is changed to assign it to a different group then I receive the feed only for Product Class (but not for Product). To load this record, I expire the old record and create a new entry with a new Surrogate Key. Then how do I automatically cascade this change to Product and make a Type 2 change to use the new Surrogate Key from Product Class?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Subreports: Parameter Value Dropdown Shows Sum And Count Fields But Not The Actual Data Fields.

Jan 28, 2008

I have just started using SQL Server reporting services and am stuck with creating subreports.

I have a added a sub report to the main report. When I right click on the sub report, go to properties -> Parameters, and click on the dropdown for Parameter Value, I see all Sum and Count fields but not the data fields.

For example, In the dropdownlist for the Parameter value, I see Sum(Fields!TASK_ID.Value, "AppTest"), Count(Fields!TASK_NAME.Value, "CammpTest") but not Fields!TASK_NAME.Value, Fields!TASK_ID.Value which are the fields retrieved from the dataset assigned to the subreport.

When I manually change the parameter value to Fields!TASK_ID.Value, and try to preview the report, I get Error: Subreport could not be shown. I have no idea what the underlying issue is but am guessing that it's because the field - Fields!TASK_ID.Value is not in the dropdown but am trying to link the main report and sub report with this field.

Am I missing something here? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Sirisha

When Changing To Type Text From Nvarchar, The 255 Character Limit Is Maintained?

Jul 23, 2005

Hi - I am changing a field from type nvarchar to type text, given thatI need to store strings longer than 255 characters. To do this Ichange the data type in SQL Server, then I change the parameter code inthe calling procedure, as per below:cmd.Parameters.Append(cmd.CreateParameter("@title", adVarWChar,adParamInput, 255, title));becomes:cmd.Parameters.Append(cmd.CreateParameter("@title", adLongVarWChar,adParamInput, 1073741823, title));However, when I do this, for some reason, the field is still limited to255 characters - when I try to update the field with 256 characters, the error 'Application uses a value of the wrong type for the currentoperation.' occurs. Why is this? I've checked that the correct data is contained in theparameter. When I look at the data in the database, the column inquestion shows the content, whereas the next column, which has alwaysbeen of type text, shows '<LongText>' - does this mean anything? Do Ineed to do something special to convert the column from nvarchar totext? Many thanks,Iain

I can place an IIF() condition around the field to do this, but do not know how to obtain a parameter/value/function which would recognize that the viewer has selected an export (To .PDF for example).
I would prefer there be a direct parameter I can read from the RDL language, however recognizing the selection while setting up the viewer to be displayed in the code-behind and setting an external parameter is also an option.
