Changing My Database Path In Web.config

Nov 14, 2007

Hey guys,

I uploaded my website from VWD Express to ipower. My database did not work, which I have learned upon some research should have not been a shock to me, but most definetely was. When I contacted tech support they told my that my web.config files were pointing to my local paths. That I should change them and I should be fine. Elsewhere, in the knowledge base I found the strConnect that I am under the impression I need to use.

strConnect = "Provider=SQLOLEDB; Server=SQL-A1; UID=account_username; PWD=account_password; Database=user_db_name"
oSQLServer.Connect strServer,strLogin,strPwd

The problem is, I'm a complete newbie, learning as I go and I can't find anything on where or how I insert this into my web.config to correct my paths. IPower will not help with coding. I know my current connection string is in web.config in the appsettings, that's about as far as my knowledge goes.

So, could anyone show me how I go about putting this into my web.config? Examples are very helpful :]

On a side note, I've been reading that this is a common problem among newbies like myself. So, is changing these files actually going to work, or am I wasting my time? Also, before I get knee-deep into it, is the database-publishing kit put out by MS the way to go here?

Thanks for any and all replies, you guys are always awesome.

Reporting Services :: Parsing SSRS Config File And Dynamically Changing File Path Of Config File In Code

Sep 2, 2015

Currently have a single hard coded file path to the SSRS config file which parses the file and provides the reporting services web service url. My question is how would i run this same query against 100s of servers that may or may not share the same file path as the one hard coded ?

Is there a way to query the registry to find the location of the config file of any server ? which could be on D, E, F, H, etc.

I know I can string together the address followed by "reports" and named instance if needed, but some instances may not have used the default virtual directory name (Reports).

Am I going about this the hard way ? Is there a location where the web service url exists in a table ? I could not locate anything in the Reporting service database. Basically need to inventory all of my reporting services url's.

DataSet.xsd Path In App Config?

Hey all... what is the proper method for setting a Dataset.xsd path in your Settings.settings value:

Here's the app.config from settings.settings value:

<add name="ffgsCRM.My.MySettings.ffgscrmConnectionStringSQLCE"

connectionString="Data Source = Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.LocalApplicationData)ffgsCRM.sdf"

providerName="Microsoft.SqlServerCe.Client" />

I have the above and wondered how to make the path dynamic to C:Documents and SettingsUSERNAMELocal SettingsApplication DataffgsCRM.sdf in the settings.settings value.

Thanks a ton!!

Changing Default PORT Config

Mar 9, 1999

Hi, I'm supporting a SQL 6.5 application through a firewall & I'm new to NT & SQLServer.
What's the easiest way to find out what port SQL is listening on? It should be 1433 but
the NT guys say 1433 isn't in use. What's the easiest way to change the default port? A search through Books online talks about editing registry keys & I'd prefer not to do this if this can be avoided. Any tips would be appreciated.

Changing SQL Server Logon Config.

Jul 28, 2006

Hello,

When I installed MS SQL Server 2000 on our client's computer I installed it under a local account using Windows Authentication as the server logon and am now accessing it using a network login (remoting into the same box). The result is that if I change the password for the local Windows account and reboot the server, SQL server cannot be restarted; I get an error:

A connection could not be established to (LOCAL)

Reason: SQL SERVER does not exist or access denied.
ConnectionOpen (Connect())..

Please verify SQL Server is running and check your SQL Server registration properties and try again.

I've changed the registration properties to use SQL Server Authenticaiton instead of Windows to no avail. Whichever connection option I use the server will not start unless I change the local account's password back to what it was when I installed. This works, but our client wants to have that local account's password changed for security/peace of mind. Any help or advice would be appreciated here :)

Thank you

Changing Config Table Location On The Fly

Aug 30, 2007

Hi everyone,

I am trying to create a proof of concept to show that we can have packages deployed on 3 different servers and all we need to do is tell the package, upon execution/scheduled task, where to go fetch it's configurations from.

The configurations are using SQL Server as the package configuration. This makes it easier for DBA's to maintain since DBA's are responsible for package executions and job scheduling.

For example, the configuration database and all package configurations would be found on server1, server2 and server3 The difference in values is that on Server1, the configuration for the source data and the destination data point to Server1DatabaseSource and Server1DatabaseDestination and on server2, the configs point the source to Server2DatabaseSource and Server2DatabaseDestination and for server 3, the same thing but pointing to server3.

There is also a connection for the SSIS_Config database we're getting the configurations from. In theory, if we specify a different server where this SSIS_Config database is found, it should override the settings in the package. No?

When I schedule OR execute the package, it's always getting it's configs from the config specified in the package independent of wether I specify it in the Connection Managers of the Execute Package Utility when I manually execute it OR in the data sources tab when I configure the package to be run as a job in SQL Server 2005.

Am I missing something here?

Thanks,

Rob

Changing Path Of Data && Log Files On The Fly

Dec 4, 2004

We have a SQL Server setup as a publisher to 15 subscribers. We need to change the path of the data & log files to a new drive (added a new harddisk). We plan to take a cold backup of the database and shift the data & log files to the new drive. Then we just attach the data & log files from the new path.

Will this disturb my existing replication Setup?
Is the the correct procedure for changing the path of the existing data & log files?
What is the appropriate method for shifting data & log file of a live database to a different location (directory/drive) ?

thanks in advance

Dynamically Changing Configuration File Path

Apr 30, 2008

Before I launch into a long description of the issue, I was wondering whether its possible to dynamically amend the file path held in a configuration string? (I'm looking at the Package Configurations Organizer)

Basically recreating the /CONF switch in the dtexec utility

So a parent package could somehow tell a child package to pull its configuration from a selection of different xml config files at run time... I couldn't see a variable in the child package to set from the former

My only idea at the moment is to replace the Execute Package Task with an Execute Process Task, and directly invoke the child using dtexec & an expression to dynamically set the /CONF switch..

thanks

Subject: BCM Install Error - Logfile && SQL Path Path && MSSQL.1?

Apr 16, 2008

When trying to install Business Contact Manager (BCM) for Outlook 2007, the setup failed and I was refered to a log file in my Local Settings/Temp folder. The log actually says that Business Contact Manager was installed sucessfully! BCM is supposed to install SQL Express 2005 as an instance or as instance if SQL Express is already installed. There is an MSSMLBIZ instance in Services..

Who can I send the Log File to for analysis and the fix feedback?

When I first went into Computer Management and clicked on Services and Applications in the left panel, the error message appeared "Snap-in failed to intialize. Name: SQL Server Configuration Manager CLSID:{CA9F8727-31DF-41D2-975C-887D84903967} This message diappeared when I clicked on Services and Applications again. Under Services, there are 3 SQL services - one is an application that was uninstalled 3-4 weeks ago and I disabled this service. The other 2 are: SQL Server (MSSMLBIZ) and the other one is SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) When I tried to start either of the last 2, the message appeared: Services "Could not start the SQL Server (MSSMLBIZ) service on Local Computer. Error 3: The system cannot find the path specified. Under Program Files/Microsoft SQL Server/MSSGL.1 folder is mostly empty. So, it seems like the Path in the Registry is not valid and that nothing is being installed in the MSSQL.1 folder. If so, how do I fix this?

How do I get the BCM SQL instance to install and run properly? what do the messages in Services mean and how do I resolve these.

Thank you!

Dynamic Database Connection In SSIS Without Using A Config File

May 1, 2008

I'm a newbie to SSIS so this question may cause people to point and laugh. I apologise if that's the case.

I have a configuration database that holds connection details to a remote database. I want to use these connection details to dynamically create a new connection to some remote database.

I usually work in with C# where this would be simple but I can't find how to do this using SSIS.

I have found people using configuration files but as I already have my connection data in a table I don't really want to strip it out. (Also, is it a security risk to have database connection strings stored in a config file?)

I have been able to implement a custom script object to build the connection string and assign it to a user variable within the package but can't find any way to then use that variable to connect to the remote database.

Can anyone help?

Path To A Personal Knowledge Database

Jul 20, 2005

Greetings,I have to admit that I'm still a beginner in the database field, but I'mactively studying, and this is why I will be utterly grateful for theproper, accurate, and wise guidance to the right direction or specificpaths of database studies.I simply want to make my first major database project a "personalknowledge database" or a "personal encyclopedia", so to speak. By this Imean that I want to gather diverse, multi-format bits of knowledge intoa single database divided into major categories, sub-categories, and soon. For example, I want to scan collected articles from newspapers &magazine and save them as images, type hand-written notes into thecomputer and save them as MS Word or Text files, save audio files withsearchable keywords, even save searchable MS OneNote audio & text files,all into directories & sub-directories. Then I want to be able to searchall these files for specific words or subjects; sort them according todate, subject, etc; update, add to or append, edit, or even cut & paste(within) any of those records in the database, which rely on easilycustomizable formats like text & images (in contrast with audio files orOneNote files, for example).I also want to prevent wasting time in the future, by avoidingrepetitive, same-keywords typing for every non-text new entry, like animage or audio file, by having a customizable keyword list open (byright clicking for example), where one could mark all the relevantkeywords for the picture or audio file. Also have a short descriptionfor each one of those entries when needed. And I want to be able to addslick, good-looking graphics to the interface of the database and theforms of the records.Basically, my priorities include: saving time filling the database withknowledge, quickly & accurately finding the future targets of anysearch, presenting the search results in a highly comprehensible &organized form, and a good looking interface & forms for every entry,which are pleasing to the eye and encouraging to study.I already use graphics applications for the "looks" part. So my questionis: what are the technologies or applications that I should learn byheart and use in order to design such a database in the best way? WouldMS Access alone do it all for me? Or should I learn other technologies?I'll be grateful for anyone taking the time to help. Thanks.Sincerely,Yasso"Claiming that God does not exist because there are people suffering anddying is like saying that barbers do not exist because there are peoplewith long hair! Why Was Path To Database Automatically Put With Name When Reattached?

Mar 10, 2008

I have a database that I have made with Sql Server 2005 Express. I am building a windows app using this db as the back end. I am using visual C# Express as well.

I found out during this project that I had to detach my database in order to establish a new connection to it using the express editions. I learned that this is a short coming of the Sql Server 2005 Express Edition. So I detached my db. When I reattached my database the name had the path to where the file was in it's name. I don't think I have done anything to cause this. But, obviously something went wrong.I have a jpeg screenshot of this but can't post it in this forum.

I created another small database as a test to see if the same thing would happen again. The database only has one table with two columns. I detached and then reattached it with no problems. It did not get the weird file name that automatically included the path to the file.

Does any one know what is going on with this? Do you know how I can reattach this database and only have the original name(not the path to the file)?

Thanks

App.Config Files In A Custom Database Extension Class Library

Aug 15, 2006

Good Morning..

We're having a heck of a good time trying to implement our first CDE project in SSRS 2005.

In our SDE class library we have included an App.Config file where we want to store configuration settings..

Trouble is that when we view the configuration settings or connection string settings in debug mode, they're not being read for some reason..

Here's our app.config file:
-------------------------------------------------------------
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>

<configuration>

<configSections>

</configSections>

<appSettings>

<add key="eventLogName" value="FocusDPEEventLog" />

</appSettings>

<connectionStrings>

<add name="PassConnString" connectionString="Data Source=SOMEDATASOURSE;Persist Security Info=True;User ID=SOMEUSERNAME;Password=SOMEPASSWORD;Unicode=True"

providerName="System.Data.OracleClient" />

</connectionStrings>

</configuration>

-------------------------------------------------------------
Here's what our Immediate window Debugger is tellin' us about our configuration settings:

-------------------------------------------------------------

ConfigurationManager.AppSettings

{System.Configuration.KeyValueInternalCollection}

[System.Configuration.KeyValueInternalCollection]: {System.Configuration.KeyValueInternalCollection}

base {System.Collections.Specialized.NameObjectCollectionBase}: {System.Configuration.KeyValueInternalCollection}

AllKeys: {Dimensions:[0]}<----incorrect should be 1

ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings

Count = 1 <----ok, is one, but the wrong 1, see 3 lines down...

base {System.Configuration.ConfigurationElementCollection}: Count = 1

ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings[0]

{data source=.SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=SSPI;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|aspnetdb.mdf;User Instance=true}<--Should be PassConnString

base {System.Configuration.ConfigurationElement}: {data source=.SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=SSPI;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|aspnetdb.mdf;User Instance=true}

ConnectionString: "data source=.\SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=SSPI;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|aspnetdb.mdf;User Instance=true"

Name: "LocalSqlServer"

ProviderName: "System.Data.SqlClient"

Now notice the stuff in bold...I have NO IDEA where this gosh-danged thing is reading, but it doesn't seem like it's the app.config file in our class library...

thanks..

Aspnetdb Is On A Network Path That Is Not Supported For Database Files

Sep 1, 2006

I have two, probably related, problems:I have a very simple site. It will be used on the local intranet only. I want to use the windows authentication so users do not have to log on. The aspnetdb has been created using the configuration tool. If I use Server Explorer in vs to work on the site on my local machine, I can open aspnetdb, look at its tables, etc. If I use Server Explorer in vs to work on the site on the server, aspnetdb will not open and gives this error message: ..."network path that is not supported for database files"...Other sites on the same server give the same message, but the sites work. I think this is because they can read the file but not write it; but that is a guess. We have tried everything; my head is ready to explode. We are using SQLServerExpress. It resides on the server's C drive (as does our data database). The web site, and hence the aspnetdb are on the F: drive of the same machine. Does SQLServerExpress treat the F: drive as a UNC drive? If so, are we in deep doo doo? I'm at a loss.As far as logging in: If I debug from vs, the login works beautifully both on my local machine and running from the server using vs. Login does not work when accessing the site from iexplorer. Mystified by that one, too. I tried to implement profiles and they crash, too; that led me to consider a write problem.Don't know what to do; any help is appreciated.

I use the following command to create the distribution database:

@data_file_size = 4, @log_folder = N'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2MSSQLData',

Invalid destination path C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2MSSQLData.

It's not due to permissions on that particular folder. I have tried using other folders, all with the same results. Also, I am an Administrator on the PC, so I have full permissions. I have tried running the SQL Server services as myself and Local System. Same results both times. Co-workers with apparently the same setup are able to create the distribution database without a problem.

Has anybody had this type of problem?

Thanks,

Evan

[HELP!] How Do You Make The Database Path Relative In The Connection String?

Oct 10, 2006

Hi everyone,

I am working on a Hospital Information System project with a team of 6.Each one of us builds or modifies a part of the system and shares the project over a common repository. The problem here is that we use the absolute path of the database in our connection string. Although the directory structure of our project is the same for each member, since the main project folder itself is stored in different locations on each person's computer (for example, one may have it stored in c:My Documents and the other in d: My Documents), we are forced to modify the connection string manually each time someone else from the team updates the repository with the database. How do we make the path of the database relative so that we don't have to modify the connection string manually each time after receiving an update from the repository?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Why No Config.exe File In Book ASPnet 2.0 SBS By George Shepherd, To Install ASPNETDB Database?

Feb 7, 2008

For MS Press Book, ADO.NET 2.0 Step by Step, 2005 Edition by Rebecco Riordan, installing the code samples created a ConfigDB.exe file
under SampleDBs folder. Running this exe file created a AdoStepByStep into the Database
folder in SQL Server 2005 Express.

However, for ASP.NET 2.0 Step by Step, 2005 Edition, by George Shepherd, there is no Config.exe to install the ASPNETDB SQL Server
2005 Express database. I right clicked the Database folder to 'Attach' the database. But,
the database just showed a 'c: ASPNETDB.MDF filfe path as a name. Further, running
the aspx files in Chapters 7 and 12 showed a 'Timeout Expired' error msg, indicating
something wrong with accessing the SQL Server database.

How can I run the aspx files in Chapters 7 and 12? How can I install the ASPNETDB?

TIA,
Jeffrey
